Jasprit Bumrah has been out of cricketing action since September 2022. Now, it is being reported that the premier pacer will take more time to fully recover and is likely to fly to New Zealand for his back surgery. The speedster is all set to skip the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, which is a big blow for the Mumbai Indians (MI) and will be leaving the country to get rid of his back issues with treatment in New Zealand.

As per a report in the Cricbuzz, Bumrah could fly to New Zealand for his back issues, which has persisted for a long time. The BCCI’s medical team and the National Cricket Academy's (NCA) managers have shortlisted a Kiwi surgeon who will take care of the Indian speedster and help him overcome his back issue. It is to be noted that the expert has previously worked with English pacer Jofra Archer. The Christchurch-based surgeon Rowan Schouten has previously also operated the former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond, the current bowling coach of the MI camp.

Bumrah is expected to leave for Auckland at the earliest. At this point, he is likely to take more than five months to fully recover and can return to action in September. Thus, Bumrah is all set to miss IPL 2023, WTC final, and Asia Cup 2023 and can also be out of the ICC ODI World Cup, to be held in India later this year.

The Indian team management will be closely monitoring Bumrah's progress. He is a vital cog in India's plans across formats and it will be a huge blow for the Men in Blue if he is ruled out of the ODI WC, to be held during October-November.

Since the beginning of 2022, Bumrah has not played a lot of cricket. He has featured in only five Tests, ODIs and T20Is each for Team India whereas played all 14 games for the Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise during IPL 2022.

Jasprit Bumrah's back surgery treatment to be in NZ, India pacer to be out of action till September: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) versus Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) row has been much-talked about with regard to the Asia Cup 2023 edition. This year's continental tournament, to be held in the 50-over format, was scheduled to be played in Pakistan but BCCI have refused to send Team India to their neighbouring country. In the recently-held Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Bahrain, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah revealed that they will not get government clearance to send the national side to Pakistan -- due to Indo-Pak's strained political relations -- and urged other boards to understand their situation.

While BCCI have made its stance clear, PCB have also threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup -- to be held in India -- later this year. In all likelihood, the BCCI-PCB row won't end anytime soon and it has become a huge talking point. The continental tournament is likely to be held in a different country, but PCB will remain the hosts, and a final call on the venue will be taken next month. Before that, former Pakistan all-rounder and captain Shahid Afridi reacted to the whole controversy and feels even ICC won't be able to do anything if BCCI remain firm on not sending India to Pakistan.

Speaking on Samaa TV, Afridi said, "If anyone is unable to stand on his own feet and then the decision to make such strong calls is not easy. They have to look at plenty of things. India agar aankhe dikha raha hain (If India is threatening), or taking such strong stance, then they have made themselves that strong, hence they are being able to talk like this, otherwise they wouldn’t have the courage. At the end it’s making yourself strong and then take decisions."

Afridi further opined, "I have no idea, will India visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup? Will we boycott the ODI World Cup in India? But we need to take a stand at some point or the other. In this case ICC’s role becomes crucial, they should come forward, but let me say it even ICC won’t be able to do anything in front of BCCI."

It remains to be seen where the Asia Cup will be held this year. In 2022, Sri Lanka remained the host while the tournament was shifted to the UAE where the Islanders won the championship, beating Pakistan by 22 runs in the final.

'ICC won’t be able to do anything': Afridi reacts to BCCI's refusal to send India to Pakistan for Asia Cup

Last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah -- also the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief -- confirmed that this year's Asia Cup will be at a neutral venue as India won't travel to Pakistan -- where the edition is scheduled to be held. It raised eyebrows and saw the then Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja lash out at Shah.

A lot was said and written as Pakistan have threatened to boycott the ODI World Cup, to be held in India later this year, if the Asia Cup is held at a neutral venue. Many also backed India's stance of not touring Pakistan, following the 2008 Mumbai blasts, whereas some felt Shah shouldn't have spoken about the Asia Cup when addressing the media at the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October.

On Thursday (January 05), ACC chairman Shah released the calendar for 2023 and 2024. He tweeted, "Presenting the @ACCMedia1 pathway structure & cricket calendars for 2023 & 2024! This signals our unparalleled efforts & passion to take this game to new heights. With cricketers across countries gearing up for spectacular performances, it promises to be a good time for cricket."

Later, Sethi also slammed Shah in an exclusive interaction with Sports Tak. In the interview, he slammed BCCI saying 'it is an independent board' and not reliant on the government to finalise whether to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023 and feels if India doesn't want to visit their neighbouring country for the continental tournament, Pakistan also have a right to ask for the ODI World Cup to be held elsewhere.

'What type of standards are these?'

Sethi said, "If you won't come to Pakistan and then say come to India. What type of standards are these? I believe that politics should be kept far aside. BCCI is an independent board but ours (PCB) is linked to the government. So definitely we have to take many permissions from the government but the BCCI considers itself as an independent and private unit then such type of politics isn't necessary." He stated, "What is neutral venue? Why should we host our tournament in a neutral country? Let's play the 2023 World Cup match between India and Pakistan at a neutral venue in Australia then."

Sethi asserted, "Earlier also Mr Jay Shah gave a statement in which my predecessor Mr Ramiz Raja was not happy with that and expressed disappointment. He announced before that we (India) won't play against Pakistan in Pakistan." He added, "So the thing is on one side you want Pakistan to come and play the World Cup (2023) in India. On the other end, you say we don't want to go to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup. Tomorrow when the Champions Trophy will be played in Pakistan, won't you play that as well?."

While the Asia Cup has been confirmed to be held in September, there is nothing official regarding which country will host the event. Moreover, Pakistan have threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, if they are deprived of hosting rights for the continental event. Hence, some big decisions are on the way with regard to both events.

Pakistan are also scheduled to host the 2025 Champions Trophy. Hence, a lot will depend on how things pan out this year before the next CT, i.e. regarded as a mini version of the WC.

'You want Pakistan to come for ODI WC, but don't want to visit us for Asia Cup?' PCB chief slams Jay Shah

Pakistan, under Babar Azam, reached the T20 World Cup 2022 final but lost to eventual winners England at the MCG, Melbourne last month. Their campaign was a topsy-turvy affair as the Men in Green lost their opening two games only to win four in a row and make the final. It was a young squad which impressed many, however, there was a lot of talk regarding the squad which didn't have veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik.

Malik was part of the 2021 T20 World Cup campaign, in the UAE, and did come up with some valuable contributions. However, the 40-year-old last played for the Men in Green during the Bangladesh T20Is, in Mirpur, and has been out of favour since then. After his T20 WC omission, he had shared a cryptic tweet saying, "When will we come out from friendship, liking & disliking culture. Allah always helps the honest."

A month after the T20 WC final, Malik has opened up on his omission and credited skipper Babar Azam foer being vocal about his non-selection. He said on Cricket Pakistan, "Mujhe nahi pata inside news kya hai, lekin Babar ne mujhe Asia Cup me bola tha ki World Cup me ye hi team jaayegi. Uski side se sab communicate hota raha, vo mere se achhe terms pe hai. Main usko apna chhota bhai samajhta hu, uski grooming ya help out karne me, ya jab bhi usko discuss karni hai cheezein, main hamesha se vahan hu aur rahunga. He was in constant communication and remains on good terms with me. I consider him my younger brother. I'm always ready to help him out whenever needed)."

Further, the former Pakistan captain Malik asserted that he does not hold a grudge against Babar and only wants him to grow as a player. “Main aisa nahi hu ki agar main kisi vajah se team me nahi aaya, toh main naaraz ho jau ya muh bana lu. Main aisa bilkul nahi hu. Main karunga bhi nahi aisa. Meri duaa hai uske saath, main chahta hu vo grow kare aur Pakistan team ko, aur uski performances ko top of the table rakhe. At present, the Babar-led Pakistan line-up is involved in the second and penultimate Test versus England in Multan. The home side lost the Rawalpindi Test by 74 runs in what was a high-scoring affair. Pakistan will hope to level the series and go on to win it with ICC World Test Championship final ticket up for grabs.

'He told me during Asia Cup...': Shoaib Malik credits Babar Azam for being vocal about his T20 WC omission

Virat Kohli had spoken about the text he received from MS Dhoni after regaining form in the Asia Cup. After India's Super 4 round defeat to Pakistan, Kohli had revealed how Dhoni messaged him when he left Test captaincy, early this year, and spoke at length about the camaraderie between the two in a post-match presser. "When I left Test captaincy, MS Dhoni was the only one among all the cricketers I had played with before who texted me. A lot of people have my number but he was the only one who texted me. It comes from the genuine respect that we have from each other. There is no insecurity from either end in our equation."

Months later, the 34-year-old Kohli shared the details of Dhoni's text while speaking on RCB Podcast to Danish Sait. The former Indian captain said, "The only person who genuinely reached out to me was MS Dhoni. For me, that is such a blessing to know that I could have a such a strong bond and relationship with someone who is so senior to me. It's more like a friendship based on a lot of mutual respect, and that's one of the things he mentioned in the same message reaching out to me. It was, 'when you are expected to be strong and looked at as a strong individual, people forget to ask you how you are doing'."

“It hit home to me. I was like, 'this is it'. I have always been looked at like someone who is very confident, very mentally strong, who can endure any situation and circumstance, find a way and show us the way. Sometimes, what you realise is that at any given time, you really need to take a couple of steps back and understand how you are doing, how your well-being is,” the superstar cricketer further added.

When Kohli received a text from Dhoni, he was battling a rough phase with the bat. After a break, he rejoined the team during the Asia Cup and ended as the second-highest run-getter in the continental tournament, with two half-centuries and a ton, and since then, it has been no looking back for the star batter. In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 edition, Kohli is the leading run-getter after the end of the Super 12 round and will spearhead India's batting department in the knockouts as well.

Dhoni's texts for Kohli definitely left a big and positive impact on the latter; helping him recover from his poor form and he will now look to score big and guide India to their second T20 WC title in the ongoing edition in Australia.

Dhoni's texts for Kohli definitely left a big and positive impact on the latter; helping him recover from his poor form and he will now look to score big and guide India to their second T20 WC title in the ongoing edition in Australia.

After BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who is also the Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) chief, stated that India won't be travelling to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup, it has led to a huge outrage in the Pakistan cricket fraternity. Several former Pakistan cricketers have slammed the BCCI's decision to take the Asia Cup to a neutral venue. Shahid Afridi had earlier taken to his official Twitter handle to criticise BCCI and has once again come hard on their recent remarks.

Afridi said on ABP News,"Yahan pe BCCI ne thoda bachkana harqat ki hai. Thoda time le lete, koi baat nahi agar decision unhe yahi lena tha World Cup k baad le lete. India-Pakistan ka World Cup ka match, usse pahle is tarike ka bayan dena mere khayal se jaldbaazi thi. Hamesha hamare relation ko cricket ne achchha banaya hai. There was a World Cup match and, hence, there was no need for such a remark. Cricket has always unified India and Pakistan, improved relations between the two nations. I can clearly recall how the Indian team was welcomed in Pakistan in 2003-04 and we also received a warm welcome we went there. Earlier, the former Pakistan all-rounder and captain had tweeted saying, "When excellent camaraderie has been established between the two sides in the past 12 months that has created feel-good factor in the countries, why BCCI Secy will make this statement on the eve of #T20WorldCup match? Following Shah's remarks, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had also threatened to boycott the ODI World Cup, which will be held later next year in India. A final call on the 50-over Asia Cup will be taken later this year. However, it is unlikely that Pakistan will get to host the continental tournament. Pakistan had last hosted the mega event in 2008, when Sri Lanka beat India in the final, and that was also Men in Blue's last visit to their neighbouring country.

They gave a childish statement: Shahid Afridi once again slams BCCI's decision on Asia Cup 2023

Pakistan cricket legend Javed Miandad has slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over its stand on the Asia Cup 2023 after Jsecretary Jay Shah's recent comments. BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Shah kicked up a storm in the cricket fraternity with his recent comments as he made it clear India won't travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup next year.

Shah said the tournament will be shifted to a neutral venue despite Pakistan currently holding the hosting rights for Asia Cup 2023. His statement has been criticised by several former Pakistan cricketers, who have slammed the BCCI for refusing to travel to the country for the tournament.

Some have also urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to boycott the ODI World Cup in India next year as a mark of protest if the Asia Cup is shifted from Pakistan. Miandad became the latest to join the bandwagon and said Asia Cup should be scrapped if the tournament cannot be hosted by Pakistan. He also urged the BCCI to not bring politics into cricket.

Scrap Asia Cup, don't bring politics into cricket: Javed Miandad slams BCCI after Jay Shah's comments

On Tuesday, (October 18), a major change in leadership took place at the BCCI with Roger Binny taking over as the board's 36th President, after Sourav Ganguly's exit. The former Indian captain had attained the top post in late 2019.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, however, resumed his second innings and made a massive claim while interacting with the reporters after the board's 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM). Meanwhile, later in the day, a report suggested that the PCB is set to take a harsh step following BCCI's latest decision over the 2023 Asia Cup. It led to the official announcement of Roger Binny, former Indian all-rounder, taking over as the Indian cricket board's 36th President, succeeding Sourav Ganguly. After the AGM, Jay Shah -- who is BCCI Secretary and also Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) chief -- made a bid revelation. He confirmed that the 2023 Asia Cup won't be held in Pakistan and the continental tournament will take place at a neutral venue, as was the case with this year's edition. After the decision was announced by Shah, former Pakistan opener Saeed Anwar reacted to the development and slammed BCCI. "When all international teams and international cricketers come to Pakistan for @OfficialPSL, what is @BCCI's problem. If BCCI is willing to go to a neutral venue, then @TheRealPCB should also be willing to go to a neutral venue for the WC in India next year. #PAKvIND #Cricket," Anwar tweeted. On Tuesday (October 18), the Asian Cricket Chief Jay Shah -- who is also the BCCI Secretary -- has confirmed that India won't travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup. Shah, who interacted with the reporters after BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai, made it official that the Indian team won't go to their neighbouring country for the 50-over Asia Cup, to be held next year, and the continental tournament is likely to be held at a neutral venue.

The development came forward on the day when Shah was given another term as the BCCI Secretary whereas 1983 World Cup hero Roger Binny replaced Sourav Ganguly as the board's 36th President.

India and Pakistan haven't play bilateral series with each other since early 2013, when Misbah-ul-Haq-led Men in Green toured India for three ODIs and two T20Is. India's last visit to Pakistan was during the 2008 Asia Cup whereas their last tour of Pakistan was in 2006, when Rahul Dravid was the captain of the national side.

Since then, both sides only meet in multi-nation or ICC events. The strained political relations have led to no bilateral series between the two Asian giants. The senior men's teams, however, met twice during the 2022 Asia Cup -- where India and Pakistan won a game each -- and will now lock horns in the Super 12 match during the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, at the MCG, Melbourne, on October 23.

Meanwhile, the senior women's teams had also squared off in the Women's Asia Cup, recently held in Bangladesh. The Bismah Mahroof-led Pakistan women had defeated the eventual winners Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves in the group stage.

India won't tour Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup, tournament to be held at neutral venue: ACC chief Jay Shah

Fast bowler Renuka Singh wreaked havoc with the ball while Smriti Mandhana starred with the bat as India thrashed Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final to cinch the Women's Asia Cup 2022 title at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Bangladesh on Saturday.

India have now won the Asia Cup a record-extending seven times, a testament to their dominance in the tournament. The Women in Blue entered the summit clash as overwhelming favourites and stood up to their tag to emerge on top. Harmanpreet & Co. produced a stunning bowling performance to restrict Sri Lanka to a paltry 65 before chasing down the target without breaking a sweat.

Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and opted to bat first in the all-important clash. However, the decision backfired as Lanka got off to a horrendous start. Athapaththu was dismissed cheaply on just 6 off 12 balls by Renuka before the Indian pacer sent back no.3 Harshitha Madavi on a duck.

Renuka went on to finish with excellent figures of 3/5 in her three overs as she also accounted for the dismissal of Hasini Perera on a duck. The Sri Lankan batting line-up fell like a pack of cards as the Indian bowlers ran riot. While Renuka was the pick of the bowlers for India with a three-wicket haul, Sneh Rana and Rajeshwari Gayakwad picked up two wickets each.

After a brilliant show by the bowlers, the batters made light work of the run-chase as they nailed down the target with ease. India got off to a shaky start as they lost both Shafali Verma (5) and Jemimah Rodrigues (2) in quick succession, however, Smriti Mandhana slammed a brilliant half-century to single-handedly take her team over the line.

Mandhana looked in splendid touch as she made a mockery of the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The left-hand opener scored an unbeaten 51 off 25 balls laced with six fours and three sixes to ensure a comprehensive victory for the Indian team.

India dominated the proceedings throughout the tournament as they started out with a comfortable victory over eventual finalists Sri Lanka before thrashing Malaysia and UAE in lop-sided encounters. India suffered a minor blip losing against arch-rivals Pakistan but bounced back against Bangladesh to make it to the final.

Renuka Singh, Smriti Mandhana star as India thrash Sri Lanka by 8 wickets to clinch Women's Asia Cup title

Pakistan are scheduled to host the 2023 Asia Cup, following which the ODI World Cup will be held in India in the latter half of next year. While India have not toured their neighbouring country since 2008 and both sides only meet during multi-nation or ICC events, due to the political tension, it might just be possible that India can make a visit to Pakistan for the next edition of the continental tournament. It is to be noted that the BCCI has dropped a major hint in the note given to state associations prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 18.

It is to be noted that India's visit to Pakistan will be subject to the clearance of the government at the time but is believed to be in BCCI's plans. As per a report in Cricbuzz, the board officials didn't dwell much in this regard. However, the significant part is that the Indian cricket board's secretary Jay Shah is the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

"It will be subject to the clearance of the Government of India as always," said a BCCI official when asked to comment on the matter. Another alternative can be to take the mega event to the UAE, like it happened this year, but India's visit to Pakistan is certainly on the agenda of the BCCI.

India's visit to Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup, subject to govt clearance, on BCCI's agenda: Report

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India faced Thailand Women in the first semi-final of the Women's Asia Cup 2022 edition, being held in Bangladesh, on Thursday (October 13). Being the favourites, India stormed past Thailand by 74 runs to book a place in the final. After entering the semi-final as the table-toppers in the group stage, with five wins and a solitary loss, India were asked to bat first. Shafali Verma's 28-ball 42 and vital contributions from Jemimah Rodrigues (27), Harmanpreet's 36 (30) and Pooja Vastrakar's 13-ball 17 propelled the Women in Blue to a moderate 148-6, at Sylhet.

It was a chaseable score but the inexperienced Thailand batters only managed a paltry 74 for 9 in their full quota of overs. Thailand were never in the run-chase with skipper Naruemol Chaiwai and Nattaya Boochatham being the highest run-getters, scoring 21 apiece. From India's perspective, the likes of Deepti Sharma (3 for 7) and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2 for 10) applied pressure from the word go by chipping in with key wickets and giving nothing away easily.

With this result, India storm into the tournament finale and now await the winner of the second semi-final, where Pakistan face Sri Lanka, to lock horns with them in the summit clash on Saturday (October 15). India have lost only to Pakistan in the tournament and will be eager to play them and settle scores in the marquee finale.

At the post-match presentation, skipper Harmanpreet said, "We batted really well, Thailand bowled quite well, not giving us easy runs. We really had to work hard. That partnership (between her and Jemimah) helped us to get a score on the board. When you're not playing a lot, you need runs to get confidence. She (Deepti) is someone who is willing to bowl at any stage. Having such a bowler always gives confidence. When you're getting around 150 on the board more often than not, it gives confidence. Whoever makes it to the final, we'll make plans."

Shafali, who was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match, stated, "Lots of confidence (with the win). Wicket was good to bat, felt good. Smriti and Jemi also did well. We need to look at getting partnerships (regularly). Hope the weather stays good (for the final). I'm more confident about my game now, but will keep working. Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma take India to Women's Asia Cup final with big win over Thailand

The Women's Asia Cup 2022 edition is living up to expectations. With each passing day, the competition is getting intense. After Thailand beat Pakistan by four wickets, on Thursday (October 06), the Women in Green returned to winning ways by getting the better of arch-rivals India for the first time in the tournament history.

On Friday (October 07), India and Pakistan locked horns with Harmanpreet Kaur & Co. being unbeaten after three successive wins. Opting to bat first at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet, Bismah Maroof-led Pakistan women posted a moderate 137 for 6 in 20 overs, with Nida Dar top-scoring with an impressive 56. From India's perspective, Deepti Sharma and Pooja Vastrakar shared five scalps in between.

What they said

Nida Dar, Player of the Match: It was a slow start for us. Bismah told me we need to get a partnership. It was a good wicket for the batters. I needed to hit to my strong areas. I told her (Bismah) you go for singles and doubles. Last three-four overs, it was low scoring. We need to work on that aspect.

Bismah Maroof: It was an important game for us. We executed well. Nida batted and bowled really well. We just wanted to make a partnership. Nida played a crucial innings and helped us get to a good total. We were looking for gaps. We didn't assess the conditions really well. We all executed the plans well today.

Harmanpreet Kaur: I think in the middle we were trying to give other batters a chance. That cost us today. It was a chaseable target. In the middle overs, we were not able to rotate the strike. For me it is important that whoever is new to the side, they get enough games before the WC. It was a great oppurtunity for others. We don't take any team lightly. It is part of the game. They played good cricket and deserved to win. We need to work on areas and be strong.

Women's Asia Cup: Pakistan end India's winning run, beat arch-rivals by 13 runs in low-scoring contest

Virat Kohli returned to international cricket with the commencement of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE. After a break, post the England tour, the 33-year-old's return was keenly observed. The right-hander had a torrid time in England and ended without a single half-century across formats. Thus, his return to form was much awaited by the Team India fans.

Much to the delight of Indian cricket team and its ardent supporters, Kohli ended as the second-highest run-getter in the continental tournament where India failed to reach the final. Kohli ended with 276 runs in five outings, including two half-centuries and a hundred. In the recently-concluded India-Australia T20Is, at home, Kohli continued to contribute with the bat. In the series opener, he fell for 2 (7) and departed for a quickfire 11 in the rain-curtailed second and penultimate T20I before scoring a crucial 63 in the final encounter, in Hyderabad, on Sunday (September 25) to help India win the series 2-1.

'Virat Kohli is someone who is damn self-confident'

Seeing Kohli among runs, right before the T20 World Cup which gets underway in Australia from next month, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar lauded the former Indian captain. He believes Kohli is someone who is damn self-confident. “See, right from the Asia Cup every match that he got runs, not just the runs, there was some improvement coming. I think the power game is back, he’s trusting his power game. There was a time when he was getting runs but his power game was not coming at his beck and call, that is starting to happen. 'Virat Kohli is someone who is damn self-confident' Seeing Kohli among runs, right before the T20 World Cup which gets underway in Australia from next month, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar lauded the former Indian captain. He’s dispatching good balls for big boundaries and sixes," Manjrekar said while speaking on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER THE TOP’ ALSO READ | Former Pakistan spinner lauds Indian batter, expects him to leave Virat Kohli & Babar Azam behind "It’s all about confidence, this is a guy who’s damn self-confident and drives himself to excellence but for long-time runs weren’t coming and his confidence was tender. 'This is a guy who’s damn self-confident' - Sanjay Manjrekar reacts as Virat Kohli regains form

India, under Rohit Sharma, failed to win the Asia Cup 2022 edition despite being termed as favourites. India dominated the group stage but fell flat in the Super Four, losing their opening two games versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively, to bow out of the multi-nation tournament without featuring in the final.

On Tuesday (September 20), India hosted Australia in the three-match T20I series opener at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Being asked to bat first, India posted 208 for 6 only to lose the clash in the last over as the current T20 world champions Australia went past the finish line by four wickets in a last-over finish. As witnessed in the Asia Cup, India's loss to Australia in Mohali once again exposed their death-bowling concerns with the T20 World Cup less than a month away.

Speaking to Sports 18, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar revealed that while he was pessimistic after India's performance in Asia Cup 2022, he saw some positives in Rohit & Co.'s 1st T20I loss at the hands of Aaron Finch-led Australia. "See after the Asia cup, I thought there were more wounds, deeper wounds. But this match actually has given me a lot of positives. The bowling issues will be easily addressed with Mohammed Shami being available and (Jasprit) Bumrah coming back. So, there were real important positives. After the Asia cup, I was slightly disheartened and pessimistic. But after this loss to Australia, I’m not that depressed,” Manjrejar mentioned.

Manjrekar commented on Harshal Patel's bowling, who conceded 22 runs in the penultimate over in the Mohali clash versus the Men in Yellow. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer ended with match figures of 4-0-49-0. "Harshal is someone we’ve seen for a number of years. We’ve seen him in the IPL as well. He’s a guy who rebels when the pitch is dry when his slower ball becomes really slow and becomes very difficult to play. Last time his slower balls were going at around 120kmph. So, it’s not a huge drop in pace. So, Harshal is a worry if the pitch is flat, bouncy and pacy. That’s what you’ll get in Australia. So that’s another thing that India will be mindful of, the skills of Harshal in Australia,” the ex-cricketer added.

India is likely to see the return of premier pacer Bumrah, who recently recovered from a back injury but wasn't rushed into the playing XI for the series opener in Mohali, in their second and penultimate T20I versus Australia. It will be held in Nagpur on Friday evening (September 23).

So far, 15 people have been arrested following a special operation by the police to "deter further disorder" in Leicester, reports BBC.

The arrests followed large-scale protests on Saturday and Sunday as tensions ran high between young men from sections of the Muslim and Hindu communities.

According to BBC, people during Sunday's protest congregated on Belgrave Road, with members of the crowd saying that they were on the streets as a result of the recent unrest.

Allegations and counter-allegations continued between the members of the two community, both accusing each other of targeted attacks.

Speaking to the Guardian, a 42-year-old community leader named Rukhsana Hussain claimed that a group of men marched through the city’s Green Lane Road area on Saturday, where there are a number of Muslim-owned businesses and a Hindu temple.

According to the report, the men were heard chanting “Jai Shri Ram”, in which a video substantiating this claim was shared on Twitter purportedly showing men from the Hindu community throwing glass bottles on Belgrave Road.

India condemns Leicester violence and vandalism of Hindu religious premises

The city of Leicester in UK witnessed street clashes on Saturday. The police say they have arrested 15 people & their investigation is still on. What were these clashes about? Priyanka Sharma explains.

Gravitas: Leicester clashes: Was Asia Cup 2022 the trigger?

Arshdeep Singh had a forgettable campaign in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, where favourites Rohit Sharma-led India bowed out in the Super Four round. While he ended as India's second-highest wicket-taker in the recently-concluded edition, in the UAE, with five wickets from as many games, it was his dropped catch in Men in Blue's Super Four loss versus Pakistan that led to his massive trolling.

The Indian cricket fans went after Arshdeep after the 23-year-old talented pacer dropped a simple catch to give a reprieve to Asif Ali during Pakistan's 182-run chase versus India in the Super Four clash in Dubai. The Men in Green finisher was completely outfoxed by a Ravi Bishnoi delivery, in the 18th over, and mistimed a shot that went to Arshdeep. The youngster dropped a sitter which led to Pakistan's stunning five-wicket win.

R Ashwin has now backed Arshdeep and schooled his trolls to not abuse anyone. On his Youtube channel, the offie said, "So, we will get to the outrage that we saw on social media about his dropped catch against Pakistan. Yes, anybody in the public eye will get criticism, agreed. It is a part and parcel of our life. We will accept it and move forward. But getting personal is not the greatest of feelings. He (Arshdeep) is representing all of us when he is on the field, right?"

Ashwin further asserted, "Sometimes, we have to put ourselves in that situation as a commoner, be it someone working in an IT industry, or someone working in a factory. We are tweeting out of emotion as soon as he drops a catch, scolding him. Let’s admit it’s an expression of our emotions.

"Abusing someone is completely wrong, guys. Imagine Arshdeep reading those trolls. Imagine the toll it will have on the youngster. Imagine the effect it will have on him and his family," added the spin-bowling all-rounder.

Ashwin lavished praise on Arshdeep for his performances in the Asia Cup, where he gave his all bowling the last over versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively, with virtually nothing to defend. The Punjab pacer showed that he was not deterred despite the dropped catch fiasco and has a calm head on his shoulders to bowl in the death overs.

Arshdeep and Ashwin both are part of India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November. Both will hope to make a mark and guide India to their second title in tournament history.

'Abusing someone is completely wrong' - Ashwin defends Arshdeep after dropped catch fiasco vs Pakistan

Arshdeep Singh grabbed a lot of eyeballs during India's dismal run in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, held in the UAE. While the young pacer, who featured in all games for the Men in Blue in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, returned with five scalps from as many outings, he also made heads turn by dropping a sitter in the end overs of the Indo-Pak Super Four clash in Dubai, where Men in Green won by five wickets.

Arshdeep, however, showed a lot of courage to bowl the last over versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively, with virtually nothing to defend. Named in India's main squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup, the 23-year-old will hope for redemption in the showpiece event in Australia and guide India to their second T20 WC title.

Arshdeep also met his idol, Wasim Akram, during the continental tournament. His coach Jaswant Rai recently revealed what Akram told his disciple.

Speaking to journalist Vimal Kumar, Jaswant revealed, "Arshdeep told me that he met Akram bhai who told him, 'Sardarji, you are bowling very well. You are a good bowler. If you think you are perfect, then don't come to me. If you feel you want to ask me anything or want to learn something from me then you can come whenever you want'. He then told me that when he went to the hotel at night, he kept thinking about that question. He felt that if he didn't go then Akram would mind and think that Sardarji seems to know everything. So next day he went to Akram and had a discussion."

Akram also came in defence of Arshdeep after he was mercilessly trolled by his countrymen following his dropped catch fiasco versus Pakistan in the Asia Cup. In this regard, the former Pakistan speedster-cum-captain said, "If social media wants to target or have a go at someone, try me. Muqaabla karna hai to mujhse karo, then I can reply back. I have a very simple theory. If somebody is rude to me, I will be 10 times ruder. If someone will like me or send me a funny message or has a good sense of humour, I will be exactly the same. Having a go at a young kid, your own kid, doesn't make any sense. I am all for fans and their opinions, but unless and until you haven't played professional cricket, you don't know what type of pressures players are going through on and off the field."

India had a terrible run in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, held in the UAE. After dominating the group stage, the Men in Blue fell flat in the Super Four round with back-to-back defeats -- at the hands of Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively -- to bow out from the race for the final.

However, the Indian team management and ardent cricket fans of the country breathed a huge sigh of relief with Virat Kohli returning to form. Featuring at the highest level after a break post the England tour, the 33-year-old ended with 276 runs -- second-most in the 2022 edition -- and ended his century drought by slamming his much-awaited 71st international ton.

Kohli slammed a brilliant 61-ball 122 not out, striking at 200, in India's last Super Four clash where they faced Afghanistan in Dubai. Despite it being an inconsequential tie for the seven-time winners, Kohli gave plenty to cheer for the Indian fans with his memorable ton. He moved past Ricky Ponting (70) to now have second-most centuries in international cricket, after Sachin Tendulkar (100).

While he still far away from surpassing Tendulkar's tally, former Aussie skipper and two-time ODI World Cup-winning captain Ponting isn't ruling out Kohli's chances of breaking the Master Blaster's sensational record."

If you would have asked me three years ago, I’d have said yes. But the fact that it has slowed down as much as it did yeah, I still think that it is possible for him, there’s no doubt," the legendary Australian said in the latest episode of ICC Review Show.

Ponting, however, feels that even though Kohli has time on his side, it won't be easy for him to slam 30 more centuries at the highest level. "I still think he has got a number of years ahead of him, but I guess to still be 30 international hundreds behind, that’s a lot. That’s five or six Test hundreds a year maybe for the next three or four years. If you throw a couple of one-day ones, maybe the odd T20 ones on top of it," he opined.

"Look, I’ll never say never with Virat because you know once he gets on a bit of a roll, you know how hungry he is and how keen for success he is. I’ll never say never that’s for sure," Punter concluded.

While he still far away from surpassing Tendulkar's tally, former Aussie skipper and two-time ODI World Cup-winning captain Ponting isn't ruling out Kohli's chances of breaking the Master Blaster's sensational record." If you would have asked me three years ago, I’d have said yes. But the fact that it has slowed down as much as it did yeah, I still think that it is possible for him, there’s no doubt," the legendary Australian said in the latest episode of ICC Review Show. ALSO READ | 'Rohit, Kohli & Rahul didn't hit the ground running': Ex-Pakistan cricketer on India's Asia Cup debacle Ponting, however, feels that even though Kohli has time on his side, it won't be easy for him to slam 30 more centuries at the highest level. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Will Virat Kohli break Sachin Tendulkar's historic feat? Ricky Ponting shares his take

Rohit Sharma-led India were favourites to win the Asia Cup, held in the UAE from August 27-September 11. Rohit & Co. topped their group and stormed into the Super Four. However, what followed was sheer disappointment from thereon. India lost their opening two fixtures in the Super Four round, losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively, to bow out of the multi-nation tournament without featuring in the final.

The summit clash was held between Pakistan and Sri Lanka which saw the Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders emerge on top by 23 runs, at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Nonetheless, with India not even reaching the finale, it was a forgettable campaign for the Men in Blue. Recently, former Pakistan cricketer Bazid Khan shifted the blame on India's famed top three -- Rohit, vice-captain KL Rahul and Virat Kohli -- to not hit the ground running together from the first game itself; causing India's downfall in the continental tournament.

"India, I thought. I mean Kohli got a hundred in the last game although he was looking good throughout. But India also had the problem that their top-three weren't in form at the start of the tournament, but found form as the tournament progressed. So those three didn't hit the ground running which meant that they lost those games, and all were close matches. And they would look at and think that now with players like Bumrah coming in and working towards that T20 World Cup they are in a better space but I reckon that because a few of their batters weren't in top gear, that was a huge issue," Bazid told in an exclusive interaction with Hindustan Times.

While Kohli ended with 276 runs in the Asia Cup -- second-most overall -- Rahul managed only 132 runs at 122.22 whereas captain Rohit ended with 133 runs, including a 42-ball 71 versus Sri Lanka in the Super Four clash. Rahul managed only one half-century, in the inconsequential tie versus Afghanistan (scoring 62) whereas Hitman was also slow to get going. Kohli looked in good touch throughout -- barring the Sri Lanka encounter -- but his strike rate increased considerably in India's last game, versus the Afghans, where he slammed a breathtaking 61-ball 122 not out.

Further, Bazid lauded India's aggressive approach with the bat in the shortest format, ahead of next month's T20 World Cup in Australia. In this regard, he pointed out, "That's the way forward. I don't think there is merit in playing those 20 overs and being at 150 for 5. It's just that you have wasted your resources. India have done very well playing this brand of cricket and it has actually helped them become a more dangerous and evolved T20 side. Every team has attacking players in their line-up, look at Sri Lanka, in that final they had lost 5 wickets but they kept on attacking. Their thought process was if you bat out the overs, and get to 130, that is equivalent to getting bowled out for 110. So you might as well get to 170 or 180, rather than settle for 130. And things worked in their favour."

'Rohit, Kohli & Rahul didn't hit the ground running': Ex-Pakistan cricketer on India's Asia Cup debacle

Pakistan locked horns with Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2022 edition's final on September 11 at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Opting to bowl first, Babar Azam & Co. had restricted the Lankans to 58 for 5 before Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 71 and Wanindu Hasaranga's 21-ball 36 propelled their side to a competitive 170 for 6 in 20 overs. In reply, the Men in Green never got going in their run-chase and were dismissed for 147 in their full quota of overs with Pramod Madushan and spin-bowling all-rounder Hasaranga sharing seven scalps in between.

After Pakistan's disappointing loss in the summit clash, which led Dasun Shanaka & Co. to win their sixth Asia Cup title, legendary cricketer Javed Miandad has ripped apart the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for not using his services, along with many other national heroes.

"People like me are literally sitting here. Personally, I don't want anything but use us! I have always kept Pakistan first. You have people here. We don't want money. I'm sure the players will benefit from my presence. I come with a lot of experience. The way they lost, it hurts,” Miandad told Cricket Pakistan.

“It's actually shameful. You have so many people here, where is your nationalism? What Pakistan are you talking about?” Miandad further pointed out. BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup on Monday evening (September 12). The squad was very much the same which took part in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 edition, where the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue failed to play the final.

Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel returned to the main squad, after recovering from injuries, and were drafted in the main squad whereas Md Shami, Deepak Chahar, Ravi Bishnoi and Shreyas Iyer were named in the reserves. Despite a settled squad at India's disposal, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has made a bold claim. Kaneria, who followed the Asia Cup closely, feels while Virat Kohli has regained form, captain Rohit and his deputy KL Rahul need to score big else India's campaign can go downhill, just like the continental tournament.

"While Virat Kohli has returned to form, the likes of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul must score big runs. Otherwise, their campaign will be the same as it was at the Asia Cup," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

India's campaign will be the same as it was at Asia Cup: Danish Kaneria warns Rohit Sharma & Co.

Senior India batter Virat Kohli has made a massive jump of 14 places in the latest T20I rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday. Kohli has moved to the 15th spot in the T20I rankings for batters after his heroics in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where he was the highest run-getter for the Indian team.

Kohli had dropped down to the 29th spot in the T20I rankings after enduring a lean patch with the bat. However, he bounced back to form in style during the Asia Cup 2022 where he notched up back-to-back fifties before smashing his 71st international century in style. Kohli finished the tournament as the second-highest run-getter overall behind Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan.

While Rizwan remains the no.1 batter in T20Is, Kohli is now at the 15th spot. The Indian maestro brought an end to a nearly three-year-long wait for his 71st international hundred in India's last Super Four clash against Afghanistan where he slammed a brilliant knock of 122 runs.

Virat Kohli jumps 14 places in latest ICC T20I rankings after Asia Cup heroics, Md. Rizwan remains on top

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli returned to international cricket in the Asia Cup, after a break post the England tour, and regained form with scores of 35 (34), 59* (44), 60 (44), 0 (4) and 122* (61) in the continental tournament. Despite India's miserable run at the Asia Cup, eventually won by underdogs Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma-led India will be content with Kohli returning to form and will hope for him to go all-out in the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia from October-November.

A day after Kohli's name was announced in India's final squad for the T20 WC, there is more to rejoice for his ardent fans as King Kohli has now become the first-ever cricketer to reach 50 million followers on Twitter. While he has a knack for making a plethora of runs and breaking several records on the field, he also owns the social media platforms and is recent feat on the micro-blogging platform speaks volumes of his popularity.

Kohli recently ended his century drought, since late 2019, with his maiden ton in the shortest format during India's final clash at the Asia Cup where they locked horns with Afghanistan in Dubai (on September 8). After returning with a stunning 61-ball 122 not out and starring in India's big win, Kohli said at the post-match presentation, "Firstly I am grateful for how the day went today. Time away from the game gave me a good chance to sit back and observe a lot of things about me. I mentioned one special person - Anushka - who stood by me through these tough times and I mentioned her as she has seen the absolute raw side of me throughout all these months. She was the one putting things in perspective for me, kept giving me the right kind of guidance, vision moving forward and I came back into the system as a relaxed person. It was just about enjoying the game, understanding the game and what God blessed you with. Today was the build-up of the last few games, I batted out of my skin to be honest and I surprised myself. What surprised me was my 60s became failures; quite shocking for me, batting pretty well and contributing but doesn't seem to be enough. I can't really pinpoint anything to anyone as I said God has blessed me with good things in the past and that's why I am in this position where these things can be spoken about."

Kohli will now be eager to make the most of his form leading into the T20 WC and help the Men in Blue return with the mega title. Here's the final squad of Team India for the upcoming ICC event:

Huge feat for KING KOHLI! Virat becomes first cricketer to reach 50 million followers on Twitter

Pakistan and Sri Lanka locked horns in the Asia Cup final on Sunday evening (September 11) at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Havig defeated the Babar Azam-led Men in Green in the Super Four clash, Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders once again emerged on top of the two-time champions to win the tournament for the sixth time, second-most after India (seven).

Being asked to bat first, SL were in a spot of bother and tottering at 58-5 in 8.5 overs before Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 45-ball 71 and Wanindu Hasaranga's 21-ball 36 propelled the Islanders to a competitive 170-6 in 20 overs. In reply, Pakistan were never in the run-chase and got dismissed for 147 (20) with Pramod Madushan, Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratne sharing nine scalps in between. After the clash, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja was asked about the national side's loss in the summit clash of the continental tournament and he made heads turn with his behaviour.

An Indian reporter asked him if he had a message for the Pakistan fans, back home, post the defeat. To this, Ramiz said, "You must be from India and will be very happy now that Pakistan has lost”. Later, the reporter argued that he wasn't happy as well but the argument continued between the duo before Ramiz slammed him and even grabbed his phone to move ahead and answer another reporter's question. The video has gone viral in no time. Here's the clip:

At the post-match presentation, Babar said, "Congratulations to Sri Lanka for playing outstanding cricket. We dominated them for the first eight overs, but the partnership that Rajapaska got was amazing. This was a true wicket and it is always nice playing in Dubai. We didn't bat according to our potential. We started well, but we gave away 15-20 extra runs and couldn't finish well. A lot of positives for us to take. In a final, the margin for mistakes is lesser. Our fielding wasn't up to the mark and the batting couldn't finish it off well. But Rizwan, Naseem and Nawaz were positives. Ups and downs will be there, but it would be nicer if we made lesser mistakes."

Pakistan will focus on the positives from the multi-nation tournament and regroup before the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in October-November in Australia.

Shocking! Ramiz loses cool at Indian reporter on being asked about Pakistan's Asia Cup final loss - Watch

Pakistan head coach Saqlain Mushtaq defended his players while appreciating the Sri Lankan team`s performance after Pakistan`s loss in the final of the Asia Cup on Sunday. The veteran spinner appreciated the performance of the Sri Lankans in the final and said that this is how champions play and they did exactly that. "Sri Lanka played brilliantly as champions in both innings and that`s how champions play. They asked us to bat in the last match and when put into bat this time, they performed brilliantly. They deserve to be champions," said the coach.

On being questioned about the lack of intent in Mohammad Rizwan`s innings, the coach said that the way Rizwan plays has worked for the team in the past and they cannot just copy a certain type of play because each player has its own style of playing. "Everyone has their style of play, our style got us through to the Semi Final of T20 world cup and Final of Asia Cup. So it is evident that this style of play works for us. Just because the other teams are following a certain type of play, we don`t need to follow it. According to me, we should concentrate on things that have been lacking and not change things that have worked well for us and our style of play is not bad at all," said the coach on being questioned about the attacking approach taken by other countries. The coach was also very vocal in defending Pakistan captain Babar Azam and his bad form in the Asia Cup where the batter has not performed according to the high standards set by him.

Saqlain said, "Watchful eyes and cricket experts will say this is just a patch. He has been unlucky. He is a world-class player with a great work ethic and he will definitely make a strong comeback."Talking about the immaculate performance of their opponents he said, "We played good cricket for the first nine overs but then they dominated us for the next 31 overs in batting, bowling and fielding. They got the momentum against Afghanistan and they look like a strong side now."Answering the shortcomings of the side that led to the loss, he said, "We did well within the 9 overs to get half the side in the dug out but then Rajapaksa played the innings of a lifetime. He will remember this innings for a long time. Other batters complimented him well. Hats off to him. "The coach also talked about the criticism that is being faced by the team`s middle order and said that all the criticism is uncalled for. "I have been hearing people question the middle order. But I don`t understand why? Series whitewash against WI, semi-final in the T20 world cup, final here, we are not doing badly. In the small format, minute mistakes are not small, the impact of a small mistake is big. We have made such small mistakes. We will try not to commit those mistakes in the future," the former Pakistan player said. On being asked if the team is choking in knockout matches since they lost the semi-finals in the T20 World Cup earlier and the Asia Cup final, he said that the team is just making mistakes and are meeting a team who plays better cricket than them on the given day.

"To be honest I don`t think we are choking. We are making mistakes, lots of credit to Sri Lanka for how they played. They played well, the same was the case with Australia in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup," said the coach. He also spoke in response to the question of changing batters' position, "How do we measure trust, belief, and faith? If we keep changing that means we are not trusting the players. We are doing things as per the planning and right now it feels okay."Answering about the top order`s performance, he said, "If top order fails, responsibility goes to the middle order, if they fail it goes to the lower middle order. It is part of the game. We do have meetings about it but I am not very concerned about it at the moment. Players have stepped up like Nawaz, Khushdil, and Naseem to win matches for us in the Asia Cup."On criticism from people on social media and reacting to Shoaib Akhtar`s tweet, Saqlain said, "People are entitled to their opinion. People from the outside can`t see what`s going on on the inside. Players gave it all. Players were injured like Asif and Shadab. It`s easy to comment while watching TV."

"This is all part of life. We respect our fans. They evaluate in terms of emotions but this is part of the game and should be understood. An example is India who came in as favourites but were knocked out early. T20 is indecisive. On a given day any team can be defeated," he said sharing a message for fans. A brilliant half-century from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and fiery spells from spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and pacer Pramod Madushan helped Sri Lanka lift its sixth Asia Cup title, defeating Pakistan by 24 runs in the final in Dubai on Sunday.

Babar Azam's form not a concern, he will make a comeback, says Saqlain Mushtaq

Anyone who has followed Amazon's India strategy will not be surprised by the latest investment offer of its CEO Jeff Bezos.

Six years ago, the same Jeff Bezos promised to invest $2 billion in India. Now, it's $1 billion.

But as we have seen, the small traders view Amazon as a monopoly. They are worried about their livelihood.

This leads to several complex questions - can India strike a balance between big-ticket investments and small businesses? if the answer is yes, then how can India achieve the balance?

While the digitisation of Indian businesses is a welcome step, the question is - what is Amazon's profit in this?

Already, India's small retailers blame Amazon and Walmart for offering deep discounts. For consumers, deep discounts are good news, but it sounds a death-knell for small businesses who struggle to compete with 'giant' discounts.

Unless the government brings in pricing regulations on online retail business, this problem will continue, with or without Amazon.

Amazon and Walmart have already been accused of violating India foreign investment rules. There are also doubts over how firms like Amazon use consumer data.

The government must make it clear to Amazon that predatory pricing practices will not be allowed in India. Having said that, it's a good thing that Amazon is interested in India.

It shows that there is global optimism on India's consumption and economy and more investments would only accelerate the economic revival.

India is home to the world's fastest-growing e-commerce market, second-biggest smartphone user base. India's export market could also improve drastically with investments from platforms like Amazon.

The need of the hour is the balance. Small businesses are crucial for the long-term health of the Indian economy. Moreover, small businesses will promote local innovation.

The government needs to approach this situation in a graded manner by setting pricing norms, incentivising small businesses while also enhancing the synergies through investments from Amazon.

While Jeff Bezos makes his sweet offers, it is important for the government to understand a simple fact - the mood among small retailers should not be allowed to turn sour and bitter.
