Injuries forced Sri Lanka on Tuesday to drop two key players -- Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera -- from its 15-member squad for the 50-over Asia Cup tournament. Sri Lanka's cricket board said Hasaranga, a spin bowling all-rounder, and pace bowler Chameera were in the original squad, but had to be dropped due to their injuries. Two other lesser-known players -- Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara -- were also left out because of injuries, the board said.

The Asia Cup, which starts Wednesday, is a final chance for teams from the region to size each other up before the World Cup in India starting in October. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are co-hosting the six-nation Asia Cup, a hybrid model agreed after India refused to tour Pakistan.

Sri Lanka squad: Dasun Shanaka (Captain), Pathum Nissanaka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Matheesha Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushan Hemantha, Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan.

Injury-hit Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka name 15-man squad for Asia Cup

Team India is set to kick off their campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The continental tournament gets underway on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan as the multi-nation competition will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The Asia Cup is vital for India as it will be followed by the home ODI World Cup 2023 and, hence, it provides a&nbsp;great chance for the Men in Blue to finalise their team combination. The return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna has also bolstered India's squad.&nbsp;

On Tuesday (August 30), head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that Rahul will be missing the first two games in the Asia Cup, as a precaution due to a niggle, whereas Iyer is fully fit. On the other hand, Bumrah will also mark his return to the 50-over format after a long gap. He recently made his international return during the Ireland T20Is and will now prepare for the forthcoming ODI World Cup,&nbsp;starting&nbsp;on October 05 in Ahmedabad, India. Before India's Asia Cup opener, Dravid confirmed that India will 'ease Bumrah into the scheme of things slowly'.

"It is great to have them back. Jasprit is someone who we have missed a lot, over the last two years he has not played too much games," Dravid said while addressing the press conference on Tuesday. "We will ease him into it slowly. It was nice for him to get those overs in the tour of Ireland. We have a whole month to build him up before the World Cup. It gives us more options in the pace bowling department," Dravid added.

Bumrah is extremely vital to India's plans for October-November's home ODI World Cup. His form and fitness will be essential and, hence, will be closely monitored throughout the continental tournament. The 29-year-old made a strong statement in the Ireland T20Is, early this month. Leading the side, he guided a second-stringed India to a 2-0 series win and ended with the Player-of-the-Series award with four scalps in two games, with the finale being a complete washout.

We will ease him into it slowly: Rahul Dravid on Jasprit Bumrah as pacer set for 50-over return in Asia Cup

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that Shreyas Iyer is fully fit for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The Men in Blue, under Rohit Sharma, will begin their campaign on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. All eyes are on India's middle-order as Rohit &amp; Co. are desperate to finalise their batting line-up ahead of the home ODI World Cup, which gets underway on October 05 in India. Hence, Iyer and Rahul's participation in the continental tournament will be very essential.&nbsp;

<h2>'Shreyas Iyer is fully fit'</h2>

Speaking at the press conference, on Tuesday (August 29), after India's training camp in Alur, Karnataka, Dravid confirmed Iyer's fitness and said, "Shreyas Iyer is fully fit, he has ticked all the boxes - batted and fielded a lot in the camp. The only thing he has missed is the game time. Looked pretty good, and it will be all about giving him more game time, Hopefully, it will come in the Asia Cup. In terms of fitness, he has done really well, has batted really well, ticked all the boxes."

However, Dravid made it official that KL Rahul won't feature in India's opening two games of the Asia Cup. "Both him (KL Rahul) and Shreyas are in the same boat. Slightly cautious approach with KL (due to a niggle, unrelated to his original injury). We are hoping he will only miss the first two games and will be available for the latter part of the tour," added Dravid.

India are placed in Pool A comprising Pakistan and Nepal. The top two teams from both groups -- Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh -- will proceed to the Super Four before the summit clash takes place on September 17. The continental tournament, being jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, is vital for India as they gear up for the home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 05, and, thus, they will be adamant about fixing their middle-order issues. It remains an area of concern for the Men in Blue given Rahul and Iyer's lengthy injury breaks.&nbsp;

Shreyas Iyer is fully fit, confirms head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of India's Asia Cup opener vs Pakistan

Virat Kohli is set to feature in his fourth ODI World Cup when the upcoming 2023 edition kicks off on October 5 in India. At 34, Kohli will leave no stone unturned to help India end their ten-year-long ICC title drought and win the 50-over showpiece event. It is to be noted that India last won the ODI World Cup when the ICC event was co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Thus, the home side will be eager to replicate their 2011 heroics. Kohli, who was part of the MS Dhoni-led victorious side in 2011, will aim to bring his experience into play and help Rohit Sharma and Co.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, which starts on August 30 (Wednesday), and will soon be followed by the CWC 2023, Kohli recalled the memories from the 2011 edition and claimed that winning the 50-over championship is his career's highlight.&nbsp;

<h2>'It was stuff from dreams'</h2>

In an event in Bengaluru, Kohli was quoted as saying by PTI, "My career highlight is obviously winning the World Cup in 2011. I was 23 at the time, and I probably didn't understand the magnitude of it. But now at 34, and has played many World Cups, which we haven't been able to win, So, I understand the emotions of all the senior players (in 2011)."

"All the more for Sachin Tendulkar, as it was his last World Cup. He had already played many World Cups by then and to win it in Mumbai, his hometown, was very special for him. I mean, it was stuff from dreams," the former captain opined.

Recalling his entire experience, Kohli said, "I remember the amount of pressure there was on all the players when we were travelling. Thankfully, there was no social media back then. It would have been a nightmare, honestly. But through the airports, it was always just one thing -- we need to win the Cup."

Kohli had a decent run in his first-ever World Cup in 2011. He ended with 282 runs -- including a century and a vital fifty -- and made a crucial 34 in the final where India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets on April 2 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Back then, Dhoni &amp; Co. beat teams such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia, etc. to win the coveted title for the second time in Indian cricket's history.

Talking about the CWC '23 edition, Rohit-led India will open their campaign on October 08 in Chennai where they face Australia. They will go hard for their third 50-over mega title and Kohli will be desperate to lead the batting department with aplomb. The 34-year-old, with over 25,000 international runs in 501 games, along with 76 hundreds, will be the go-to batter for the Men in Blue.

India's T20 star Suryakumar Yadav hasn't been able to crack the 50-over game code yet but he's looking to 'do well' in the format during the upcoming Asia Cup. The right-hand batsman is also expected to make the cut for the ICC ODI World Cup which will begin shortly after the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

“I feel the role which will be given to me, I will try to maintain that role, and if it’s a changed role I will try and do that. But yeah, this is one format which I’m really looking forward to doing well in,” said Suryakumar Yadav as quoted by Star Sports.

The batsman, who has earned the reputation of being a 360-degree player for his exploits in the shortest format, also said that the ODIs are the most challenging format for him.

“The reason behind this is because here you have to play like the other three formats. First by setting down with calmness and composure, then rotating the strike well, followed by at last the T20 gameplay,” he said.

“The balance is very important in this format, and for that reason, I am doing a lot of practice and also having conversations regarding this with Rahul (Dravid) sir, Rohit bhai, and Virat (Kohli) bhai. Hopefully, with this tournament going forward, I will crack the code,” he said.

Asia Cup: Suryakumar Yadav hopes to 'crack code of most challenging format' in upcoming tournament

Ahead of India's tournament-opener in the Asia Cup, versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele in Sri Lanka, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra feels Virat Kohli should continue to bat at No. 3 and isn't in favour of his demotion to No. 4, as suggested by former head coach Ravi Shastri. Chopra feels the former Indian captain is best suited to his preferred spot, i.e. at No. 3, where he has an exceptional record.

It is to be noted that the 34-year-old Kohli has batted at No. 3 in 210 innings and amassed 10,777 runs at an average of 60.21. On the other hand, his record at No. 4 is impressive as well,&nbsp;hitting 1,767 runs in 39 innings&nbsp;at of 55.22. In his latest episode of Aakashvaani on Jio Cinema, Chopra said, “There are two parameters to judge this. First, Virat Kohli’s success at No. 4 is good, but at No. 3 it’s exceptional. A significant sample size reinforces this and his peak equals India’s best. Hopes rest on his tournament performance – if he does well, India benefits; otherwise, a middle-order gap looms. Kohli’s effectiveness shines at No. 3, tackling new balls and closing games. Retaining this is vital."

He further opined, "Just because he has the ability to bat at No. 4 shouldn’t mean that he should play there."

The talk regarding Kohli taking up the No. 4 slot came forward as Rohit Sharma-led India continue to suffer with their middle-order considerably undercooked before the Asia Cup, to be followed by the ODI World Cup in India. Shreyas Iyer and&nbsp;KL Rahul -- who bat at No. 4 and 5 respectively -- have returned after long injury layoffs and would need time to settle down in the line-up. Moreover, India have tried a few backups such as Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav but none have made a strong case. Kishan has a double century but that came while opening the innings, Samson has done reasonably well but continues to throw his wicket away whereas Surya has fell flat in the 50-over format so far.&nbsp;

With Rahul to be out of the opening few games for India in the Asia Cup, Chopra also named Samson as his backup, not Kishan. In this regard, he added, “If KL Rahul is unavailable, Ishan Kishan’s placement becomes key. Sanju Samson can also replace him as a travel reserve - I am assuming without Rahul, Sanju Samson can enter the team. Given a No. 5 batter is needed, selection should be based on that specific condition. Samson, a middle-order batsman and keeper, should be the backup."

4 is impressive as well, hitting 1,767 runs in 39 innings at of 55.22. Virat Kohli shines at No. 3: Ex-India opener not in favour of star batter's demotion ahead of Asia Cup

Misery continues to pile up for the defending Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka as their seam-bowling duo of Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara are ruled out of the competition, starting August 30. The pair has joined the long list of Sri Lankan first-team players who are either ruled out or will miss the initial few games due to respective injuries.

Per the latest reports, left-arm seamer Madushanka tore an oblique muscle during a practice match on Friday and seasoned campaigner Kumara suffered a side strain – a recurring injury, ruling them out of the six-team tournament.&nbsp;

While the degree of Madushanka's injury puts his participation in doubt for the World Cup 2023, Kumara is expected to get fully fit before the squad announcement for the marquee event.

Meanwhile, it comes as a blow for the Island Nation, which already lost pacer Dushmantha Chameera to a pectoral injury earlier. Alongside him, ace all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will also miss a few games, including the group-stage matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh, as he is recovering from a grade-two strain in the thigh. His participation in the tournament depends on his recovery pace.

The absence of these first-team bowlers leaves Sri Lanka with less-experienced players to begin their Asia Cup campaign with. As Chameera, Kumara, and Madushanka were their quickest – and the ones who helped Sri Lanka reign supreme in the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, would likely get replaced by Kasun Rajitha, Pramod Madushan, and Matheesha Pathirana – three pacers with lesser experience.

For Hasaranga, Dushan Hemantha may also be called up to the squad for the Asia Cup, while this also opens the window for left-arm spinning all-rounder Dunith Wellalage.&nbsp;

Besides bowlers, top-order batters Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando might remain out of contention for the Asia Cup as both got infected with COVID-19.&nbsp;

Both batters, who are said to have picked up the virus while playing in the recently-concluded Lankan Premier League (LPL), will be kept under observation unless the results come out negative.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will open their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Bangladesh on Thursday, August 31, and for them to reach the Super 4, they must win both group games.&nbsp;

Asia Cup: Misery piles up for Sri Lanka as seamers Madushanka, Lahiru Kumara added to injury list, ruled out

Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma opened up on his and his team’s preparation for the packed schedule, including the Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, home ODIs against Australia and the 50-over spectacle. The right-hander batter, alongside the Asia Cup squad, will fly to Colombo on August 30 for the six-team tournament, starting on the same date. India’s opening match is against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

Speaking in an exclusive chat with PTI, Rohit said he is avoiding outside noise – positive or negative – as he continues to prepare for the marquee event in India. Considering the pressure that comes along with the home World Cup (especially in India), Rohit knows what is at stake and is gearing up for the same accordingly.

The right-handed batter, who in the previous edition in England was the top run-getter with 648 runs, including hitting five hundreds, said he wants to be in the same space he was in before the 2019 edition. Rohit added he was much more relaxed and prepared well for the ten-team tournament that brought him results.

"I want to get into the phase I was in before the 2019 World Cup," Rohit told PTI.

"I was in a great frame of mind and prepared really well for the tournament. I was in good shape, a good mindset. I want to bring that back, and I have time to do that. Trying to recollect what were the right things that I was doing before the 2019 World Cup as a cricketer and as a person. I want to revisit that thought process of mine personally,” Rohit added.

<h2>'Winning a WC won't change me'</h2>

With 44 international hundreds to his name across formats, Rohit is a veteran in the modern-day cricket setup and understands the nuances of being one in this cricket-loving country. Being around since the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, Rohit has seen a lot of ups and downs in his 16-year career.

While he didn’t play in the 2011 World Cup, Rohit won two ICC trophies for India, including the 2007 T20 WC and the 2013 Champions Trophy in England.&nbsp;

With all eyes on the Indian Team and its players, Rohit said winning the World Cup won’t change him as a person, as he continues to remain the same and prepare the way he always does.

"A person can't change overnight with his success or failures," Rohit said. "I don't think one result or one championship can change me as a person. I have not changed as a person in the last 16 years, and I don't think anything needs to change on that front.”

"The focus will be on how I can achieve my goals in the next two months, for me and my team. A person can't change in a period of one or two months,” the Indian captain added.

India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer opens up on the injury layoff that kept him away from on-field cricket for around five months. The right-handed batter complained of back pain since the beginning of this year, and upon missing a few matches against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, Iyer played in the Border-Gavaskar series only to get ruled out of the final Test in Ahmedabad in March due to the same.

Iyer underwent back surgery in London and later returned to the NCA in Bengaluru to begin his rehab. After he was declared 100% fit, the selectors named him in the 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023, as he further remains in contention for a slot in the World Cup team. Currently training at a conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, Iyer spoke in detail about the back issue that troubled him.

In a video on&nbsp;BCCI’s official handles, Iyer explained due to a slipped disc, a nerve got compressed, which led to the suffering and required treatment.

Though Iyer added he is thrilled to be back playing for India.

Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan call up rising Test star Saud Shakeel in place of Tayyab Tahir in 17-man squad

India's squad announcement for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 raised a lot of eyebrows for not selecting a few players. Some questions were also raised for including KL Rahul who is coming off an injury. Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had also said at the press conference that Rahul might not be available for some matches with some niggle.&nbsp;

The decision to select Rahul, however, did not cause much furore as did omission of ace leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. While India's 17-man squad has Kuldeep Yadav as wrist spinner, dropping Chahal hasn't gone down well with a lot of fans and former cricketers.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same, former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers said that it is 'disappointing' to not see Chahal in the squad. Notably, the same 17-member team is more or less going to be named for the ICC ODI World Cup which follows shortly after the Asia Cup.

It's a bit of disappointing drop for me, Yuzi is always very handy and it's great to have the leg-spinning option in your team. Skipper Rohit Sharma had said at the squad announcement press conference that the 'door is not closed' for Chahal and that he was dropped as team wanted someone who could bat at number 8. The last date to submit a 15-member provisional squad to ICC for the World Cup is September 5. The tournament, meanwhile, starts October 5 in India.

As for the Asia Cup, the regional tournament is also being played in the 50-over format this time as a precursor to the OD World Cup. It starts with Pakistan taking on Nepal on August 30. India start their campaign on September 2 against Pakistan in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Needing a win to clinch the top spot in the ICC rankings, Babar’s army put up 268/8 on the board as they put in a flawless show at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, August 26. Babar (60) and Rizwan (67) laid the foundation for the win as Afghanistan tried to stop them. Fareed Ahmad and Gulbadin Naib both scalped two wickets each while Rashid Khan scalped one.

For Pakistan, Agha Salman (38) and Mohammad Nawaz (30) played useful knocks and helped steer the team beyond the 250-run mark. Fakhar Zaman (27) and Imam-ul-Haq (13) put in an opening stand of 36 runs before the former was dismissed. Interestingly, Babar and Rizwan put in 110 runs for the third wicket and steadied the Pakistan ship to help them reach 268/8.

In reply, there was no repeat of Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s heroics from the last match as he departed for 5 in the sixth over. They lost wickets at regular intervals and handed the initiative to the Men in Green.

However, Mujeeb Ur Rahman avoided the blemish of humiliation as he built a 57-run stand with Shahidullah Kamal (37) for the eighth wicket before being out hit wicket to Shaheen Shah Afridi on 64. The&nbsp; Afghanistan tail then did not last for long and were&nbsp;bowled out for 209, handing Pakistan the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings. The 59-run win also saw them pocket the series 3-0.

They will then face India in Sri Lanka in the second league match in Pallekele on Saturday, September 2. Pakistan claim No. 1 ODI team rank after dominant 3-0 series win against Afghanistan en route to Asia Cup

Defending champions Sri Lanka suffered a huge blow ahead of Asia Cup 2023 as a few of their first-team players are either ruled out or likely to miss an initial few games, with star seamer Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga among them. Besides these two, top-order batters Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando could also remain out of contention for an undisclosed period.

The right-arm seamer Chameera picked up a shoulder injury during the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL). The pace spearhead last played an ODI on June 7 against Afghanistan, picking four for 63. He also missed the World Cup Qualifiers after getting injured during the warm-ups of the tournament. As per the latest reports, Chameera could miss the entire Asia Cup 2023, starting August 30.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who starred with both bat and ball during the LPL, sustained a thigh strain&nbsp;during the tournament and is sure to sit out of Sri Lanka’s group-stage matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh. If Sri Lanka manages to qualify for the next round, Hasaranga’s participation will depend on whether he’s willing to play without risk of further injury.

Sri Lanka is keen on having both star bowlers fit for the World Cup, which begins on October 5 in India.

Meanwhile, besides these two, both batters Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando have tested positive for COVID-19 and are now under observation. Their inclusion in the side for the Asia Cup 2023 depends on their recovery.

Both Perera and Fernando are reported to have picked up the virus during the late stage of the tournament, and unless they return with negative results, both would be out of contention for selection.

While Fernando has not played an ODI since January this year, majorly due to injuries, left-handed Perera last featured for Sri Lanka in a One-Day game in 2021.

<h2>Dark horse Sri Lanka eye repeating heroics</h2>

Having reigned supreme the last time around in 2022, beating Pakistan in the final, multi-time Asia Cup winner Sri Lanka will aim to repeat heroics this time. Drawn in Group B alongside Afghanistan and Bangladesh, two sides who pose a threat on a given day, Sri Lanka will have a task at hand to break into the next round and go for the win.

Meanwhile, the 1996 World Cup winners will open their CWC campaign against South Africa on October 7, while their clash against hosts India is slated for November 2.

Asia Cup 2023: Just five days to go. Take a look at all the squads here

The cricketing fraternity is eagerly waiting for the commencement of the forthcoming Asia Cup, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The tournament begins on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan with the Babar Azam-led Men in Green hosting Nepal. The biggest clash is on September 02 when Rohit Sharma's Team India will lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka.

India, Pakistan and Nepal are placed in Group A whereas the other group comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. It is to be noted that India and Pakistan can meet thrice in the upcoming edition, including the final which will be held on September 17 in Colombo. For now, all eyes are on India's opening clash. Ahead of the continental tournament's commencement, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar picked his India XI.

<h2>'KL Rahul would.....'</h2>

Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo, "My three seamers would be Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. Hardik Pandya would be my fourth seamer. My spinners would be Jadeja and Kuldeep. My opener would be Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. No. 3 batter would be Virat Kohli. KL Rahul would play because he is the keeper."

It is to be noted that when Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors named India's squad early this week, the chief selector revealed that Rahul has picked up a niggle while recovering from a thigh injury (the niggle is unrelated to his original injury). Thus, India have kept plenty of options for the middle-order with the inclusion of uncapped player Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav&nbsp;in the final 17. In addition,&nbsp;Sanju Samson is the sole travelling reserve player.

Manjrekar has included Rahul in the playing XI and feels that either Shreyas Iyer or Varma could get the nod in the middle-order. “Either Shreyas Iyer or Tilak Varma could play [in the middle-order]. I am saying this because in India’s first-choice side XI, the first seven (six) batters, including Hardik Pandya, are all right-handers. Somewhere, India will have to fit in a left-hander in Tilak Varma. This is a problem India has,” Manjrekar added.

Both Iyer and Rahul are returning to the Indian team after long injury layoffs, hence, all eyes will be on the duo in the Asia Cup, which will be followed by the home ODI World Cup, beginning on October 05.

No Ishan Kishan! Sanjay Manjrekar picks star-studded India XI for Asia Cup opener vs Pakistan

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a big statement regarding&nbsp;Mohammed Siraj. The ex-cricketer believes India cannot play Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna ahead of Siraj and the pacer needs to be in the playing XI anyhow during the upcoming home ODI World Cup. Siraj has been exceptional for India across formats, especially with early breakthroughs in ODIs, and has a solid record in Asia.&nbsp;

Chopra highlighted Siraj's record in Asia, which is better than outside the subcontinent, and heaped praise on him. On his YouTube channel, Chopra lauded Siraj and&nbsp;also praised Jasprit Bumrah, who has recently made his international comeback&nbsp;after a long injury layoff&nbsp;during the Ireland T20Is.

<h2>'You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only'</h2>

Chopra said, "Mohammed Siraj is brilliant. He has had a short career. 43 wickets in 24 matches at an average of 20.7 and an economy rate of 4.78. They are better than both Bumrah's and Shami's numbers. In Asia, his average becomes 16.57 and economy rate is 4.51. You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only."

He further opined, "His numbers in Asia are better than his numbers outside Asia. So, people who were talking about whether Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna can be played instead of Siraj, you cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only. You should play him."

Chopra shifted focus on Bumrah and added, "Jasprit Bumrah has picked up 121 wickets in 72 matches at an average of 24.3 and an economy rate of 4.63. He is brilliant - nearly two wickets per game. In Asia also, his average is 23.9 and he has an economy rate of 4.65. These are phenomenal numbers."

Siraj should play ahead of Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna in CWC '23, feels former Indian opener

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes there is no favourite in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The continental tournament is set to be jointly held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka with the tournament opener between Pakistan and Nepal, on August 30, in Multan, Pakistan. Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will be facing Babar Azam &amp; Co. on September 02, in Pallekele in the island nation.&nbsp;

Speaking to India Today, Ganguly said, "Telling favourite is difficult in the Asia Cup. Anyone can win. Both the teams are good. Pakistan is also a good side. India is obviously a good team."

Ganguly, who led India to the Asia Cup final in 2004, further opined on Jasprit Bumrah. The ace pacer recently returned to international cricket, after a long injury layoff, during the Ireland T20Is. He ended with four scalps and the Player-of-the-Series award. On the speedster's return to the 50-over format in the forthcoming Asia Cup, Ganguly said, "Bumrah has done well in Ireland. He had played T20. Now have to play ODI. Have to bowl 10 overs in a match. So let's see."

On August 21, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors named a strong 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, which did not include Yuzvendra Chahal. Many former cricketers criticised his omission. In this regard, the former BCCI chief Ganguly stated, "Its ok. You have to play only with three spinners. I think they had done the right thing by picking up Axar Patel as he can bat."

No one is a favourite in Asia Cup, says Sourav Ganguly ahead of India's opening tie vs arch-rivals Pakistan

A day after the star Indian batter Virat Kohli posted an Instagram story revealing his Yo-Yo test score during the ongoing conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, BCCI officials schooled&nbsp;players on what to post on social media and what not to. While they don’t have issues with players posting their pictures any time they like, the BCCI has asked them not to share confidential information as it is a breach of contract clause.

On Thursday, during day one of the six-day camp in Bengaluru, where the World Cup-bound players have assembled, preparing for the packed winter, Virat, among other seniors, underwent a mandatory Yo-Yo test, wherein the former captain attained the number of 17.2.&nbsp;

He posted a story on his Instagram handle, saying,&nbsp;“The happiness of finishing the Yo-Yo test between the dreaded cones. 17.2 don.”

It, however, didn’t go down well with the Indian Cricket Board, which looked at this as a breach of contract clause.

As reported in the Indian Express, the board officials have verbally asked players to take note of the dos and don’ts of posting stuff on social media. A BCCI official privy to the information told the media outlet, “Players have been informed verbally to avoid posting any confidential matter on social media platforms. They can post pictures while training, but posting a score leads to breach of contract clause."

Meanwhile, those players, mainly all seniors, who didn’t travel to Ireland for the bilateral series, were asked to undergo full body check-ups. The list of players includes&nbsp;Virat, Captain Rohit Sharma, all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja, alongside seamers Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj.&nbsp;

Per the latest reports, Captain Rohit Sharma has cleared the Yo-Yo Test.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian players get ready for showdown</h2>

The Asia Cup, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will get underway on August 30, with the marquee clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan slated for September 2 in Pallekele.&nbsp;

Following the Asia Cup that ends with the final on September 17, India will host Australia for three ODIs starting September 22 in Mohali. The World Cup 2023 will begin on October 5, with India facing Australia in their opener on October 8 in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

The big match against Pakistan got rescheduled and will now be played on October 14, instead of October 15, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Post pictures, not confidential information: BCCI schools players after Kohli reveals Yo-Yo score on Instagram

Former India player Saba Karim has backed Sanju Samson for a place in the ODI World Cup despite his omission from the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023. The Indian team selected for the Asia Cup on Monday, August 21 saw the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in the squad. Samson's omission&nbsp;paved the way for the return of Rahul, but according to Karim, he is still in the reckoning for the ODI World Cup owing to any fitness issues surrounding Rahul.

<h2>Karim backs Samson</h2>

"Sanju Samson remains in the reckoning. In case KL Rahul is not fit, then who do the selectors look at? So Samson comes in as a replacement for KL Rahul," Karim said. "So that is why those 40 valuable runs in the 2nd T20I outing at number four was a huge positive for India."

Samson has endured a mixed fortune in recent times that has seen him score one fifty since his return to the national side for the West Indies. He has been unfortunate not to have batted at times while he missed out on scoring big during the West Indies and Ireland tour. However, with competition for a regular wicketkeeper, Samson remains in the reckoning for a spot in the team. The Indian team has three options in the wicketkeepers department Ishan Kishan, Rahul, and Samson.

Currently, Samson is down the pecking order behind Ishan and Rahul, but the latter’s fitness will remain a key factor. If Rahul is not fully fit for the ODI World Cup, Samson remains the obvious choice to make the Indian team. However, if both Ishan and Rahul make the 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup, Samson will probably miss out on the plane.

<h2>Prasidh Krishna to miss out on ODI World Cup?</h2>

Karim has also not ruled out Prasidh Krishna from the ODI World Cup as he thinks he has a better chance of making the squad. Unlike Samson, Krishna is in the Asia Cup squad, but close sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suggest he and Tilak Varma will be trimmed to finalise the ODI World Cup squad.

"Plus Prasidh Krishna, as we have always talked about, good to see him come back. I think this season, this series performance compared to last year when India toured Ireland was much better," said Karim.

The selector’s panel led by Ajit Agarkar will have to announce the ODI World Cup squad before the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) deadline of September 5.

Perhaps India’s best batter in this format the past year, Iyer was away from cricket since March this year owing to a back injury requiring surgery. After going under the knife and following rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Iyer convinced the selectors that he was fully fit and raring to return to where he rightly belonged. Although fitness parameters are as important as form, Iyer’s swashbuckling 199 at the NCA game the past week sealed his comeback into the Indian Team ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement. Getting exact information on Iyer and KL Rahul’s fitness status was the reason behind the delayed squad announcement. While Rahul was declared fit earlier, questions around Iyer’s form raised concern for Team India. Things changed at the right time for Iyer, as he notched a brilliant 199 in the practice game and even fielded for 50 overs, which convinced the selectors to give him the go-ahead. "He smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. To provide the selectors with more evidence of his fitness, he then fielded for the entire 50 overs of that match, which was held at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore 3-4 days back," a reliable source in the BCCI said, as quoted by TOI. ALSO READ: Gautam Gambhir vouches for T10 format, says it has its challenges but is entertaining too Following Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna’s return to the side for the Ireland series, the next question was when the batting pair of Rahul and Iyer will be declared fit. While the talk was all about Rahul, given he comes as a keeper-batter in the team, clicking two boxes, officials remained mum on Iyer’s injury status. "For the past two months, he has been stationed at the NCA in Bangalore, focusing on his recovery. It's all come together nicely for him," the source said. Players arrive in Alur for conditioning camp Asia Cup and World Cup-bound players have arrived in Alur, Bengaluru, for a six-day conditioning camp on Thursday. With a focus on fitness-related exercises and indoor programmes, the staff at the camp is keen on preparing the side for the two multi-team events. Following preparing for the two tournaments, Team India will fly to Colombo for the Asia Cup 2023 starting August 30. The Indian Team will face arch-rivals Pakistan in its first match on September 2 in Pallekele. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

How just one good outing and focus on recovery helped Shreyas Iyer return to Indian Team for Asia Cup 2023

Pakistan cricket team is riding high on their massive win over Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series opener, where they won the first game by 142 runs. Babar Azam-led Men in Green are taking the ongoing ODIs versus the Afghans as an ideal platform to test themselves ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup,&nbsp;which commences on August 30, and the continental tournament will be followed by the ODI World Cup in India, starting on October 05. Many former cricketers believe Babar &amp; Co. are one of the strongest contenders for both the upcoming multi-nation events.

Ahead of Pakistan's run in the Asia Cup and CWC '23, former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif backed his national side but also issued a warning.

"Pakistan have a great chance (in the World Cup). They have a very potent fast bowling unit. However, it gets neutralised on turning pitches. When it comes to batting, the performances of Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, and Babar Azam have been very good. Then there are Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Nawaz. These guys seem to be automatic choices for Pakistan," Latif told&nbsp;Cricket Pakistan.

The former Pakistani cricketer further took a dig at India but feels Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli can give an edge to their team over Pakistan. "When you look at India or the other teams, they are struggling. India are struggling with their middle order. I believe Pakistan have a wonderful chance, and they should win the tournament by giving others a tough fight," Latif opined.

Our spinners haven't been able to take wickets in that period, be it Shadab Khan or Mohammad Nawaz. India, on the other hand, are very strong in the middle overs. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are capable of playing big knocks, and they play at a better strike rate than our top-order batters, which gives India an advantage."

At present, Pakistan are playing Afghanistan in the second and penultimate ODI, in the series being held in Sri Lanka, on Thursday (August 24) at Hambantota. They are the second-ranked ODI side at present and have a chance to create history by winning the Asia Cup as well as the ODI WC in India. They kick off their Asia Cup campaign on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan and will lock horns with Rohit-led India on September 02 in Pallekele as the tournament will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

In the 50-over World Cup, Babar &amp; Co. commence their campaign on October 06 when they face the Netherlands in Hyderabad.&nbsp;

Asia Cup 2023: 6 days to go. Here's how many times India and Pakistan have met in tournament

India's middle-order woes know no end. In the run-up to the 2019 ODI World Cup, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team auditioned several batters to take up the No. 4 slot. While Ambati Rayudu looked confirmed for the slot, Vijay Shankar got the nod ahead of the former. In the World Cup, India struggled to fix the&nbsp;No. 4 position, but&nbsp;Shankar and Shikhar Dhawan's injuries added to their woes,&nbsp;and the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals of the mega event. Post the 50-over ICC event, India had almost finalised Shreyas Iyer for the No. 4 slot whereas KL Rahul raised his stocks at No. 5, but injuries to the duo didn't solve Rohit Sharma-led India's problems.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors announced a strong 17-man India squad for the continental tournament which includes both Rahul and Iyer. Both the batters have been deemed fit, although Rahul is carrying a niggle, and the two will get much-needed game time as India gear up for the Asia Cup, to be followed by the ODI World Cup at home. Before the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, India's veteran spinner R Ashwin&nbsp;lauded Rahul and feels he has filled the No. 5 slot with expertise ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired. During their playing days, Yuvi and Dhoni formed a lethal batting pair, often handling the No. 4 and 5 spot respectively, and bailed India out of crisis several times.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "Ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired, India were desperately looking for a replacement. Rahul has filled that slot with expertise. He is a definite lock at No. 5 and is also our wicketkeeper-batsman."

According to Ashwin, Iyer and Rahul will take up the No. 4 and 5 spot, respectively, if fit, for the upcoming two mega events (Asia Cup and ODI WC). Both have proven their worth batting in the middle order with the best numbers since the 2019 ODI WC, but will be eager to get some match practice and runs under their belt in the upcoming month before the 50-over World Cup kicks off.&nbsp;

Ever since Yuvraj and Dhoni retired, he has filled that slot: Ashwin heaps praise on Rahul ahead of Asia Cup

India's squad for upcoming Asia Cup has gotten much attention for a few players who were selected despite coming from huge injury layoffs. The result of selecting returning players, namely Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, meant some fringe players such as Sanju Samson being sidelined. The team, however, boasts good bowling attack and former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has termed it the best.

“It’s a very strong team. Bumrah is back, which makes the team even stronger. The bowling attack is very good – Shami, Bumrah, Siraj. You can’t get a better fast bowling attack,” Ganguly said in an interaction with Star Sports.

Chahal's snub made heads turn as India have gone ahead with only one premier spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav whereas Jadeja and Axar Patel complete the spin department. Many former cricketers lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for dropping Chahal. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also slammed the call and backed Chahal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which will begin soon after the Asia Cup on October 05.&nbsp;

On his YouTube channel, Bhajji said, "The one thing I feel is lacking in the team,&nbsp;it's the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler."

“I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

Hitman added,&nbsp;"We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs,&nbsp;has&nbsp;claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

'No white-ball spinner better than him in India': Harbhajan on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, backs him for CWC '23

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup. The continental tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, kicks off on August 30 with India opening their campaign versus Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors named a strong squad, comprising KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer whereas Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were included in the final 17 with Sanju Samson being named the sole reserve player.

Although Rahul is part of the Asia Cup squad, chief selector Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma, while addressing the media, made it clear that he has a niggle but there is nothing serious with regard to the keeper-batter's fitness. Now, former India chief selector Kris Srikkanth, part of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, has slammed the selection committee for going ahead with Rahul despite questions about his fitness.&nbsp;

<h2>'If a player is not fit during selection, you shouldn't pick him'</h2>

In a video on YouTube, Srikkanth said, "It's being said that KL Rahul has a niggle. If you have a niggle, don't pick him in the squad. If a player is not fit during selection, you shouldn't pick him. That was our policy. On the day of selection, if a player is not fit, don't select him. If you want to pick him for the World Cup, select him for the World Cup. That's a different issue. Now they are saying that he might play after a couple of matches and that's why we have picked Sanju Samson as a travelling reserve. What's all this."

The former cricketer further opined, "You're playing Asia Cup which is also a premier tournament. We haven't qualified for the Asia Cup (final) over the last two editions. You have to qualify for the final and perform well. They are still unsure about the World Cup squad. You're confused. You need to have something called a selection policy. I am not trying to take any credit but let me tell you what we (our selection panel) used to have."

Srikkanth recalled his term as a chief selector and added, "We had this problem during a Test match. It was against a Test vs South Africa. VVS Laxman said he would play if he gets fit in time and urged us to keep him in the team. But on the day of the match, he was not fit. And then we thought of drafting Rohit Sharma in. But Rohit played football and injured himself. After that, Wriddhiman Saha made his debut. On that day, our selection panel decided not to be desperate. On the day of selection, if you're not fit, don't pick that player. You're making it look as though Indians don't have talent. You have created a situation like that."

With Rahul having a niggle, India have Ishan Kishan as a backup in the main squad whereas Samson will also be the travelling reserve. The seven-time Asia Cup champions are placed in Group A along with Pakistan and Nepal.&nbsp;

Kris Srikkanth lashes out at Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for including KL Rahul in India's Asia Cup squad

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a strong 17-man squad for Team India's campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup. The squad includes KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as the duo mark their return after a long injury layoff. Rahul got injured during IPL 2023, where he was leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Iyer got ruled out during the middle of 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, early this year. Rahul suffered a thigh injury whereas Iyer's back issues resurfaced.&nbsp;

Thus, Iyer and Rahul were badly missed by the Indian team management as the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led national side tried several players in the middle order to fill the void created by the the two. With India preparing hard for the home ODI World Cup, set to kick off on October 5, the Men in Blue will be relieved to see the return of Iyer and Rahul for the continental tournament, which commences on August 30. The two will be eager to make the most of the opportunities with only a handful of games left before India's ODI WC opener, on October 8.

After Iyer and Rahul's return, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir reacted to the development and&nbsp;believes the two have to perform if they want to start in the playing XI in India's World Cup opener, where they face Australia in Chennai.&nbsp;

<h2>'It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, but they will need to perform'</h2>

Gambhir said on Star Sports, "One thing is clear; there is no front runner for a position when you are trying to win the World Cup. Form and impact are important. The players who are in form need to be picked, rather than those who are not. Let it be Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, or anybody. If Tilak Varma is in better form than someone, if Suryakumar Yadav is in better form than Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan, then you need to start that player. Because the World Cup comes once in four years, you don’t go and see who is a front runner or not. Who is in the best form after the Asia Cup and the Australia series, just as Rohit Sharma had said, there is no guarantee for anybody’s position. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad."

He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because if you want to win the World Cup, only form and impact from the players will help you win. A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him. So, in my opinion, whether it’s KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer or anybody, we will look at their form after the Asia Cup and which team plays in the Australia series. That series will determine who plays in the World Cup rather than deciding after the series is over, that who will play in the World Cup. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together.”

Great to have them back but they need to perform: Gambhir on Rahul, Iyer's comeback for Asia Cup

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, set to kick off on August 30. The Rohit Sharma-led squad comprises several star players and all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been retained as Hitman's deputy for the continental tournament, to be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Paikistan. While there were some reports which indicated that Jasprit Bumrah might pip Hardik as the vice-captain, the BCCI selectors have backed Hardik.&nbsp;

Hardik's captaincy was criticised during India's five-match T20I series versus West Indies, held in West Indies and USA. Some of his statements also made heads turn whereas he failed to inspire with the bat and ball. With the bat, the 29-year-old Hardik ended with 77 runs at a strike rate of 110. However, he remains the white-ball vice-captain and former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has backed him to be the next captain but shared an important advice for the talented all-rounder.&nbsp;

"See, he definitely could be the next captain, the way he is going about leading in T20Is. But my concern is not that. Hardik has to perform. He is so talented and has done well, but where is the Hardik Pandya that scored 92 against Australia? That sort of form I want to see Hardik in," Lal told&nbsp;Hindustan Times&nbsp;on the sidelines of the CEAT Awards.

Needless to say, Hardik's form will be extremely crucial for India in the upcoming Asia Cup as well as the ODI World Cup, which begins in India on October 05. The all-rounder will like to silence his critics in style with some all-round performances in the upcoming multi-nation events.&nbsp;

'Where is old Hardik Pandya who...': Former Indian star backs all-rounder as next captain, shares THIS advice

India's latest young sensation Tilak Varma made a dream debut for the country on the recently-concluded tour of West Indies. The southpaw was easily the best batsman among other young guns for India in the five T20Is. He has been rewarded for his performance by getting a place in India's Asia Cup squad.

Tilak, who is currently in Ireland with the team for the three-T20I series, spoke about his selection in the squad. The regional tournament is being played in 50-over format this year as a precursor to ICC ODI World Cup.&nbsp;

"I never dreamed that I would be debuting directly in the Asia Cup, and that too in the one-day side. I was always dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs. But it is a big thing for me. And I always dreamed of this, like debuting for India in ODIs, that too, in like, a single year, I got my T20I debut and suddenly, in the next month, I'm just getting a call for the Asia Cup. So yeah, it is one of my dreams and I'm just preparing for it," said Tilak on BCCI.tv.

About performing in the ODIs, Varma said he's pretty confident given that he has played a lot in domestic List A cricket.

"I'm pretty confident about playing one day cricket because I have played ODI cricket for long as you said, like in the List A cricket. I have done well in List A cricket for my state and the teams also have done well, so I'm pretty confident that I can do well in ODIs, so I'm looking forward to it," said Varma.

Asia Cup, being hosted jointly by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will start on August 30. India will start their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
