Rahul’s inclusion in the Indian team saw Shreyas Iyer miss out due to a back spasm, as told by skipper Rohit Sharma at the toss. The ACC, on Friday, September 8, had issued a statement to announce the decision of adding a reserve day for the India-Pakistan fixture.

"If adverse weather suspends play during the Pak vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended," the ACC had said in a statement.

Pakistan have been in the island nation since some time now and Babar has said that they have 'an advantage' over India. “Given the continuous cricket we are playing both in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, you can say that we hold an edge (over India)," said Babar in the pre-match press conference before the&nbsp;tie against India on Sunday.

Outside of the final on September 17, the India-Pakistan marquee clash is the only other game to get a reserve day, bypassing the remaining two teams – co-host Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Speaking to the media ahead of his side’s first Super Four match against Sri Lanka in Colombo – a city facing&nbsp;rainfall during this peak monsoon season, Hathurusingha said these selective calls around reserve day are not ideal, and if it has been offered for one game, it must be there for all games.

Since the first game between arch-rivals played in Kandy got washed out, the PCB, in coordination with the ACC, were said to look into alternate venues for Super Four stages to avoid games more suffering the same fate. With the players and the broadcasters reluctant to travel to Hambantota and Dambulla (optional venues), the ACC remained confined to Colombo as the final venue for the remaining matches.

"We haven't spoken about that [reserve day] because once you've made a decision, we don't have much say. So, if we were consulted before, we would have our comment, but because it's already made, I don't have any concern. And we just get on with what we were asked. I haven't seen this kind of thing in another tournament. Changing rules in the middle of the tournament, so that's the new thing I can add to that," the head coach added.

The incident occurred at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore as play for halted for a better part of 20 minutes.

<h2>What was the incident?</h2>

With Pakistan 15/0 in their innings, the floodlights at the Gaddafi Stadium went off creating unsuitable conditions for playing. The incident occurred at the end of the fifth over as Pakistan batters Fakhar Zaman (13) and Imam-ul-Haq (2) were in the middle. The players and the umpires had no idea of what had happened and initially waited in the middle to see if the situation could be resolved.

Interestingly, only one tower of floodlights went off while others were working smoothly at the Gaddafi Stadium.&nbsp; The lights would then return in 20 minutes as Pakistan would continue their run chase. Babar Azam’s men had to chase 194 runs after Bangladesh were bowled out for 193.

Earlier, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi had trolled the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for scheduling the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. ACC initially thought to switch venues for the tournament as the Colombo venue was rain-affected. The ACC planned to switch the matches to Hambantota but did not make the plan official as both PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) agreed to stay at the venue.

The incident occurred at the end of the fifth over as Pakistan batters Fakhar Zaman (13) and Imam-ul-Haq (2) were in the middle. The players and the umpires had no idea of what had happened and initially waited in the middle to see if the situation could be resolved. Interestingly, only one tower of floodlights went off while others were working smoothly at the Gaddafi Stadium. The lights would then return in 20 minutes as Pakistan would continue their run chase. Babar Azam’s men had to chase 194 runs after Bangladesh were bowled out for 193. Earlier, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi had trolled the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for scheduling the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. ACC initially thought to switch venues for the tournament as the Colombo venue was rain-affected. The ACC planned to switch the matches to Hambantota but did not make the plan official as both PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) agreed to stay at the venue. Sri Lanka got the better of Afghanistan in a narrow win as they topped Group B of the Asia Cup 2023. The two-run win against Afghanistan in Lahore on Tuesday (September 5) also saw Bangladesh officially book their place in the Super Four as they join India and Pakistan from Group A.

Needing three runs to win from 13 overs with two wickets in hand, Afghanistan were unable to capitalise and lost the contest that paved their exit from the Asia Cup.

Needing to win the contest by a big margin, Afghanistan started their 292-run chase on a sloppy note as they lost early wickets.

Hashmatullah Shahidi’s side were 50/3 as the Sri Lanka bowlers were in top form at the start. Shahidi’s 59-run knock and Mohammad Nabi’s 65 runs helped them stay in the contest while maintaining a good run rate. The likes of Gulbadin Naib (22), Rahmat Shah (45) and others played valuable knocks to keep Afghanistan in the contest before they lost way in the chase.

Earlier, Kusal Mendis' fighting 92 and a late partnership of 64 runs by Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana helped Sri Lanka post a fine total of 291/8 against Afghanistan in their Asia Cup 2023 match here at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday.

Mendis scored the highest for Sri Lanka with 92 runs off 84 while Pathum Nissanka played a knock of 41 runs. For Afghanistan, Gulbadin Naib was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged four wickets while star spinner Rashid Khan scalped two wickets.

The win for Sri Lanka also concluded the group stage of the Asia Cup with teams now moving their attentions to the Super Four stage kick starts with Pakistan vs Bangladesh on Wednesday (September 6) at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Afghanistan suffered a heartbreak in Asia Cup 2023 as they failed to qualify for the Super Four stage after losing to Sri Lanka by the narrowest of margins. It was, however, Afghanistan team dugout and somewhat officials' mistake that the Asian minnows couldn't qualify for the next stage.

Chasing 292, the Afghans needed to score those runs in 37.1 overs to beat Sri Lanka on net run rate. Sri Lanka, however, rocked Afghanistan early as they brought them three down for 50 runs. Rahmat Shah (45), skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (59) and Mohammad Nabi (65 off 32) then brought Afghans back in the game.

The match was poised perfectly with Afghans needing 16 runs off the next 10 balls, but Kasun Rajitha sent Najibullah Zadran back on the fourth ball of the 36th over to tilt the game in Lankan's favour. Rashid Khan (27 not out off 16) then kept his team in the game with 12 runs off the next over's last three balls.

With three runs needed on the first ball of the 38th over, Mujeeb holed out and Rashid sank to his knees, thinking the game was over, but only it wasn't. Afghanistan still had a chance to win and qualify by reaching 293 after 37.2 overs, 294 after 37.3, 295 after 37.5, 296 after 38 overs, or 297 after 38.1.

The last batsman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, seemed to have no knowledge of this just like Rashid Khan. Farooqui blocked the first ball he faced - a juicy full-toss, he defended the next one before getting out on the fourth ball of the 38th over as Afghanistan lost by two runs.

Speaking on the situation after the match, Afghan coach Jonathan Trott admitted that they didn't have the knowledge of those equations.&nbsp;

"We were never communicated those calculations," he said. "All we were communicated was we needed to win in 37.1 overs. We weren't told what the overs in which we could get 295 or 297. [That we could win in] 38.1 overs was never communicated to us."

Nonetheless, Afghanistan will rue this rare chance as they miss out on the Super Four berth but they can take pride in putting up a show for their fans in the stadium and fans back home.

It was predicted that, due to consistent rain in the national capital of Sri Lanka, the matches could get washed out and to avoid the scenario, the ACC was considering shifting the venues.

According to Cricbuzz, ACC will stick to the original plan as the organisers try to avoid any reshuffle in the Colombo leg of the championship. The weather forecast in the region has improved in the last few hours and the anticipation of a match washout could be avoided. The tournament already has faced a washout with India’s contest against Pakistan called off on Saturday with a share of points.

On the other hand, the organisers want a fully-fledged game and are exploring all possible options. ACC initially planned to switch the venues as per a report on Monday, September 4. Rain was also a feature in India’s contest against Nepal on Monday when the match was trimmed.

A Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) official, however, while speaking to ESPNCricinfo on Monday, September 4 said that logistics is the only issue in shifting games from Colombo to Hambantota. The venue, which receives the least rainfall in September in the island nation, has already been signed off as the venue, ESPNCricinfo reported further, citing PCB sources.

However, Gambhir has explained his actions and made a big claim. The 2011 ODI World Cup-winning member claimed that not everything is shown on social media, alleging anti-India chants from Pakistan supporters in the crowd prompted him to make the controversial gesture. Thus, his action&nbsp;had nothing to do with Kohli chants.

<h2>'I can't hear things being said about my country'</h2>

Talking to the media on Monday (September 04), during&nbsp;India's final group stage game versus Nepal in Kandy, Gambhir said, "Whatever is shown on social media, there is no truth to it. People show what they want to show on social media. What actually happened was there were anti-India slogans being chanted, I heard chants of 'Hindustan Murdabad'. There were slogans about Kashmir also. So there will obviously be a reaction, one way or the other or laugh at it. There were a couple of Pakistani people... they were shouting anti-India stuff. Obviously, it was a natural reaction. I can't hear things being said about my country."

Gambhir further asserted, "That's why that reaction came out. If you talk bad about the country, what do expect me to do? Should I smile and go away or keep quiet? I am not that kind of a person. I just want to say this, when you have come to watch a match, support your team. There's no need to give political reactions there. There is no need to bring up Kashmir there. There is no need to speak ill about India. You support your team, your country. There were Indian crowd also, they were supporting their team."

Gambhir's action has certainly become the talk of the cricketing fraternity amid the ongoing action in the rain-marred Asia Cup. Talking about the multi-nation tournament, jointly being held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Pakistan have qualified for the Super Four from Group A, comprising India and Nepal whereas the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue need a win over Nepal to proceed ahead. Even if they share points with the lowly-ranked side, they will be through.

From Group B, Bangladesh are pretty much through to the next round whereas Afghanistan need a huge win over Sri Lanka -- on Tuesday (September 05) -- to topple the Islanders and advance ahead. For now, the Lankans and Bangladesh look certain to reach the top four.
