AFG vs SL Asia Cup 2023: Head-to-head record of Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, pitch report, weather update & more

A record-breaking 213-run stand between Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shanto and four wickets by Taskin Ahmed ensured an 89-run win for Bangladesh over Afghanistan in their second Asia Cup 2023 match in Lahore on Sunday. With this win, Bangladesh stayed alive in the tournament.

Bangladesh elected to bat first in the must-win game against Afghanistan in Lahore on Sunday. In the absence of regular openers, the Tigers tweaked the batting line-up, sending all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz to try his hand at opening while batting. The risk paid dividends, as Miraz turned out to be the difference-maker in the end.

Following an exciting start, Bangladesh lost two wickets inside 11 overs, with Mehidy Hasan still at the crease. Alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto, the pair stitched a 213-run stand – the highest for any wicket for Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. In the meantime, both completed their respective second ODI tons.

While Mehidy retired hurt on an unbeaten 112 off 119 balls, including three sixes and seven fours, Shanto, who also impressed during the Sri Lanka outing, scored an almost run-a-ball 104, hitting nine boundaries and two massive sixes.

Courtesy of their stand and handy contributions from seasoned campaigners in Mushfiqur Rahim (25 from 15) and Captain Shakib Al Hasan (32 off 18), Bangladesh posted their highest team total – 334/5, in this tournament.

The upbeat Afghanistan side lost star opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz on just one inside the second over. That wicket, however, didn’t hurt their hunger for the chase as Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah held their nerves and got the innings moving for the Afghans.

Following Rahmat Shah’s wicket, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Zadran kept their team in the chase with some clean and impressive stroke play. Zadran, who completed his fifty and looked confident of converting it into a three-digit score, got out 75. Najibullah Zadran departed early, while Hashmatullah lost his wicket soon after completing his fifty.

Wickets continued to fall as Bangladesh inched closer to their first win of Asia Cup 2023.

Star all-rounder Rashid Khan stood tall as he smashed a few boundaries to keep everyone on their toes. He didn’t look like letting the match go without a fight as he took the attack to the bowlers.

The target, however, turned out to be too much for Afghanistan, as they lost their first game by 89 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja added another feather to his illustrious hat during India's group stage face-off with Nepal in match 5 of Asia Cup 2023, on Monday (September 04) in Kandy. After India's opening game versus Pakistan was washed out due to rain, they have now locked horns with the lowly-ranked and inexperienced Nepal where Jadeja ended with 3 for 40 in his ten overs after India opted to bowl first.

With three key wickets, Jadeja equalled former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan to become India's joint-most successful bowler in Asia Cup ODIs. Both the all-rounders have 22 wickets apiece and 34-year-old Jadeja will certainly look to add to his tally in the Super Four, should India proceed further with a win over Nepal on Monday evening.

Sachin Tendulkar: 17 in 15 innings (21.4 Avg)
Kapil Dev: 15 in 7 innings (13 Avg)

Jadeja removed the likes of Bhim Shirki, captain Rohit Paudel and Kushal Malla to dent Nepal's innings after they were off to a fine start courtesy of openers Aasif Sheikh (58) and Kusal Bhurtel (38). Jaddu ended as India's best bowler of the evening whereas Mohammed Siraj also accounted for 3 for 61.

For India, they have a task in hand to chase down 231 versus Nepal, who played fearlessly to put on a decent total on the board. The former ODI champions need a win to enter the Super Four, where they will then lock horns with Pakistan on September 10 (Sunday) in Colombo.

Ind vs Nep: Ravindra Jadeja equals Irfan Pathan to become India's leading wicket-taker in Asia Cup ODIs

On Monday (September 04), India locked horns with Nepal for the first time in international cricket during match 5, in Kandy, of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 edition. After their face-off versus arch-rivals Pakistan ended with rain having the final say, Rohit Sharma-led India are looking to get off the mark in the continental tournament and also proceed to the Super Four with a win over Nepal. For the lowly-ranked opponents, the clash presents a huge chance for their young players to showcase their skills. In this regard, opener Aasif Sheikh displayed his batting prowess with a fine 58 after India opted to bowl first.

With Sheikh returning with a 97-ball 58, the right-hander created history as he became the first-ever from Nepal to score a half-century versus India. The keeper-batter stitched an impressive 65-run opening stand with Kushal Bhurtel (38) -- amidst several dropped catches from Indian fielders -- and then carved out a patient knock, respecting the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, to score a vital fifty.

Who is Aasif Sheikh?

The 22-year-old Sheikh, born in January 2000, has already made an impressive start to his brief career. He captained the Nepal U-19 team in the 2018 Quadrangular Cricket Tournament in India. In addition, he spearheaded the Nepal national U-19 team in the 2018 ACC Asia Cup.

Sheikh has some good accomplishments under his belt. He scored a stunning unbeaten 111 in the 2016 Everest Premier League final and led his team to win their maiden EPL championship. The keeper-batter's performance was widely appreciated and he ended as the leading run-getter of the tournament.

Sheikh's popularity rose further when he refused to run out Ireland's Andy McBrine -- who slipped midway while stealing a single -- during the Oman Quadrangular T20 Series early this year.

Asia Cup 2023: Aasif Sheikh creates history, becomes Nepal's first player to slam fifty vs India

India opened their campaign in Asia Cup 2023 versus arch-rivals Pakistan, in Kandy, on September 02 (Saturday). As the rain had the final say and the high-voltage clash ended in no result, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have now moved on to their next game and have locked horns with Nepal for the first time ever in international cricket in their final group stage game on Monday (September 04).

Winning the toss, Rohit & Co. opted to bowl first in another rain-predicted contest in Kandy. While Indian bowlers did produce quite a lot of chances, the fielders failed to complement with back-to-back dropped catches. Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer dropped easy chances as Nepal openers were off to a solid start.

Talking about Kohli's dropped catch, the former Indian captain made a mess of a regulation chance at cover point. It was an uppish drive from Aasif Sheikh as Kohli failed to grab the catch. Here's the video:

Sheikh made the most of the reprieve and went on to score a vital fifty (58). India were sloppy in the first hour as Nepal openers -- Sheikh and Kushal Bhurtel -- stitched an impressive 65-run opening stand. Despite a good start, Indian bowlers bounced back with regular breakthroughs to keep a tab on the run-flow but Nepal is eyeing anything over 220-230.

The winner of this game will proceed to the Super Four along with Pakistan who have booked their place as table-toppers after their rain-abandoned game versus India on Saturday.

WATCH: Virat Kohli DROPS a sitter after India invite Nepal to bat first in Asia Cup tie

India kicked off their campaign in the Asia Cup by taking on Babar Azam-led Pakistan on September 02 (Saturday) in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Opting to bat first, India were tottering at 27 for 2 and were further reduced to 66 for 4 before Ishan Kishan, batting at No. 5 for injured KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya stitched an impressive 138-run fifth-wicket stand as India managed to recover.

Eventually, Kishan (82) and Hardik (87) enabled India to post 266 all-out in 48.5 overs before rain abandoned the remainder of the game. While India's top-order continued to struggle versus Pakistan's pacers, especially Shaheen Afridi, Kishan gave a good account of himself while batting in a tough situation and was ably supported by white-ball vice-captain Hardik. After the game, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded the 25-year-old despite the youngster missing out on a much-deserved century.

Gavaskar told India Today, "Got to give credit to the young man for coming in a crisis situation and scoring 82 runs and having that partnership. I think if he was discomforted by some injury, it is only natural for him to think that because he cannot run fast between the wickets, he should be looking for the boundary. So that's totally understandable at all. So I wouldn't point a finger at him at all. I would just pat him on the back and say well done to the young man."

Kishan played his shots whenever offered enough room but was very calculative in his approach during his solid stand with Hardik. He took his chances versus the spinners and rotated the strike as well but lost his wicket for 82, dismissed by Haris Rauf in the 38th over. He missed out on a big knock, however, led India's recovery with a lot of maturity.

Meanwhile, the former Indian opener also heaped praise on Hardik, who top-scored for the Men in Blue with a fine 87. "I think again no praise can be too high for the way he shepherded Ishan Kishan through that partnership. And of course, scoring runs himself hitting the boundaries, picking the ones and twos. And he showed that, you know, in a crisis situation to rise to the occasion, that was terrific innings," Gavaskar added.

On Monday (September 04), India took on lowly-ranked Nepal and the winner will join Pakistan, from Group A, in the Super Four. Talking about Kishan, he has made a strong case for himself, with the BCCI selectors set to name the 15-man provisional squad for next month's home ODI World Cup very soon.

India vs Pakistan match in Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday, September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka may have ended without producing a result but the game gave enough to cheer to fans of both sides. Firstly, it was Pakistan's bowlers, especially Shaheen Shah Afridi, who wreaked havoc on the Indian top order, but then Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya played superbly to get India back in the game.

Former Pakistan prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, however, did not miss the chance to take a swipe at the Indian batters when Afridi was bowling a dream spell. The left-arm fast bowler hit the full lengths and accounted for the wickets of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and former skipper Virat Kohli in his first spell. He also troubled other batsmen namely Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan as well and ex-Pak PM did not leave the chance to let the world know it.

Pakistan's fast bowlers were all over India during the entire length of the match barring the 138-run partnership between Kishan (82) and Pandya (87) for the fifth wicket. Apart from Rohit and Kohli, Shaheen also sent back Pandya and Jadeja as well to finish with the figures of 4/35 in his 10 overs.

As for other wickets, Haris Rauf took three of them for 58 runs. The right-arm express bowler sent back Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. Naseem Shah, the third pacer in Pak line-up joined the party a bit late, but once he did the fast bowler cleaned up the Indian tail-enders with much ease, taking rest of the three wickets for just 36 runs including two in one over.

India eventually finished at 266 in 48.5 overs but rain didn't let the second innings take place and the match was called off without a result.

Asia Cup: Former Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif takes a SWIPE at Indian batters after Shaheen Afridi's wickets

Rain played spoilsport in the high-voltage contest between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday, September 2, in Kandy, and the points were shared by the arch-rivals. The contest was marred by rain from the start after which both teams shared the points resulting in Pakistan securing their place in the Super Four stage. The draw also means India will have to beat Nepal on Monday to clinch a place in the Super Four while an unlikely defeat could see them get knocked out early.

Rain plays spoilsport

Asked to chase 267, Pakistan’s innings never started as the rain was the consistent feature on the ground. The ground staff spent more time on the field than the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer, and the contest was called off at around 9:40 pm IST. The conditions were deemed not suitable by the umpires and ultimately the decision was taken to call off the contest. The conditions were not suitable for further play and the result was declared a draw with a share of the spoils.

India make poor start

Earlier, the Men in Blue did not have the best of starts after rain halted the play initially. Shaheen Afridi wreaked havoc in the top order with quickfire wickets of Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (4). With India already on the back foot, Pakistan further increased the pressure as they got the better of Shreyas Iyer (14) and Shubman Gill (10), reducing India to 66/4 in 14 overs. Haris Rauf got the better of the latter pair as he too joined the part for Pakistan.

Ishan, Hardik save the day

As India were struggling, Ishan and Hardik built a terrific 138-run stand for the fifth wicket pulling the Men in Blue out of danger. Both the batters were aggressive with their approach as Ishan scored at a strike rate of 101 while Hardik was also scoring at almost 100. Ishan’s 82-run innings included two sixes and nine fours while Hardik’s innings boasted of one six and seven fours.

India will next face Nepal on Monday, with the margin of win to determine India’s position in the group. India will have to beat Nepal by a big margin to win the group but will play their Super Four clash in Sri Lanka if they qualify. Pakistan will travel back to their homeland to play their Super Four clash. An unlikely win for Nepal though could see them qualify for the Super Four at India’s expense.

The conditions were deemed not suitable by the umpires and ultimately the decision was taken to call off the contest. The Indian Cricket Team will be without its ace seamer, Jasprit Bumrah, for their second group stage game against Nepal on September 4 in Pallekele, Kandy. As per the latest reports, fully-fit Bumrah is said to have headed home midway into the tournament after taking BCCI’s permission and will return ahead of the Super Four stage if India manages to qualify. Though no official word on the same is out, reports suggest Bumrah returned home due to some personal reasons.

His absence means India will bring another specialist, Mohammed Shami, into the side for the must-win game. Shami, who spearheaded India’s pace attack across formats in Bumrah’s absence since last September, was benched for the marquee clash against Pakistan as the team management decided against playing three pacers. Instead, they opted for a bowling all-rounder, Shardul Thakur, in the XI.

Bumrah missed all cricket action since September last year due to a back injury and even underwent surgery in New Zealand. Upon attaining full fitness, Bumrah returned to the cricketing setup during the three-match Ireland T20Is, where he captained the white-ball side for the first time.

His exploits against the Irish side saw him returning to the ODI team for the Asia Cup. Although he didn’t get to bowl in India’s first game against Pakistan in Kandy, as rain washed out the match after India’s first innings, Bumrah would now miss the second match against Nepal and would return ahead of India’s first Super Four stage match (if they qualify) – scheduled for September 10 in Colombo.

Rain threat looms over India-Nepal clash

As the monsoon is at its peak in Sri Lanka, Kandy and Colombo – two chosen venues for this year’s Asia Cup, are likely to receive heavy rains in the coming days and weeks. As a result, India’s second group game against Nepal, scheduled to be played in Pallekele, is under the threat of suffering the same fate.

The weather forecast suggests more than 80% rain chances on Monday in Pallekele.

While India already shared a point with Pakistan following the abandoned game, Nepal is yet to open its account after losing its opener against Pakistan by 238 runs in Multan. If India beats Nepal, they will cruise ahead with three points to their name.

Meanwhile, several reports also suggest the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is contemplating shifting the Asia Cup Super Four matches out of Colombo due to rain threats.

Dambulla, a dryer venue, is said to replace Colombo.

Asia Cup: Fully-fit Jasprit Bumrah returns home ahead of India's second group game against Nepal - Reports

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is contemplating shifting the Asia Cup Super Four matches from Colombo to Dambulla due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka’s capital city. As the monsoon is at its peak in this part of the world, two of the three main venues (outside of Dambulla) – Pallekele and Colombo, are expected to receive excessive rains in the coming days, as per the latest report. An example of this was the washed-out marquee clash between India and Pakistan on Saturday in Kandy.

All teams are said to be made aware of the situation as the ACC is now looking out for alternatives.

After BCCI refused to travel to Pakistan — the original host of this edition of the Asia Cup, due to stranded relations between both countries, Sri Lanka was picked as the second venue in the first-ever hybrid model. Though the Island Nation never hosts international matches this season, especially during the first half of September due to heavy rains, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) accepted this proposal.

While as per the schedule, Colombo will host Super Four matches from September 9 onwards, the current situation there, which could change by then, is making the decision-makers worry about more abandoned games in this tournament.

As Sri Lanka had earlier proposed Dambulla – a dryer region in comparison to Kandy and Colombo, as one of the venues to host the group stage and Super Four matches, the reluctance from the teams and broadcasters to travel there prompted all parties concerned to pick the remaining two venues.

The Indian Express reported that ACC could finalise the venue debate in the next 24-48 hours.

Beyond the Pakistan leg (which is supposed to host four matches, one in Multan and the remaining three in Lahore), all games will be played in Sri Lanka, including the final on September 17.

India-Pakistan washed-out game in Pallekele, Kandy, drew a lot of criticism over the Asia Cup schedule, with former PCB chief Najam Sethi also taking a jibe at the BCCI for choosing politics over cricket.

While serving as the PCB head, Sethi had proposed UAE as the second option after learning about India’s stance of not travelling to Pakistan for the six-team tournament. The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, who is also ACC head, denied it, citing excessive heat and unfavourable playing conditions as reasons behind it.

As a result, Sri Lanka was chosen as the second venue, with India scheduled to play their matches in the Island Nation only. Meanwhile, India’s game against Nepal is also said to be under threat due to heavy rains.

ACC plans to move Asia Cup Super Four matches from Colombo to Dambulla due to heavy rains - Reports

The cricket fans were left disappointed on Saturday, September 2 after the Asia Cup 2023 blockbuster match between India and Pakistan was abandoned. The game, which was held in Kandy, Sri Lanka, saw persistent rain after the first innings and not even a single ball could be bowled to let Pakistan try and chase 267.

While Pakistan is the official host of Asia Cup 2023, Sri Lanka was added as co-host after Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided not to play in Pakistan due to security concerns. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC), chaired by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, decided to host the regional tournament in hybrid mode with Sri Lanka as second host after long discussions.

The decision to choose the island nation to host matches, however, backfired on Saturday when the biggest match of the tournament couldn't produce a result. Expressing disappointment over it, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi shared scathing thoughts on social media platform X.

“How disappointing! Rain mars the greatest contest in cricket. But this was forecast. As PCB Chair, I urged the ACC to play in UAE but poor excuses were made to accommodate Sri Lanka. Too hot in Dubai, they said. But it was as hot when the Asia Cup was played there last time in Sep 2022 or when IPL was played there in April 2014 and Sep 2020. Politics over sport. Unforgivable,” wrote Sethi in his post.

Asia Cup: Virender Sehwag's CHEEKY remark for selecting Sri Lanka as co-host after rain mars India vs Pakistan

Out with a groin injury, KL Rahul will undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on September 4, which will determine his participation in the remainder of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Also, as per the latest reports, KL Rahul will receive a call-up to the final 15-man squad for the Cricket World Cup 2023, to be picked on September 5.

Though Rahul got picked in the 17-member team for the Asia Cup, his last-minute injury ruled him out of the first two games against Pakistan and Nepal, respectively. The makeshift keeper-batter missed on-field action since getting injured during an IPL game for Lucknow Super Giants on May 1. Upon attaining full fitness, Rahul returned to the team but again got sidelined.

"He should be fine and is likely to be cleared to travel to Sri Lanka," a source close to the information told the Times of India (TOI).

Meanwhile, despite being out of action, the right-handed batter could seal his place in India’s World Cup squad. The men’s selection committee head Ajit Agarkar will sit with the captain, coach and team management on Tuesday, September 5, in Kandy to finalise the team for the home mega event.

Rahul’s selection will, however, come at Sanju Samson’s cost, who travelled with the Indian Team as a reserve player. Reports also suggest that from the Asia Cup-bound players, out of which the final 15-man World Cup would get picked, three players, mainly Samson, Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna, could miss out on the cut.

Even though Rahul’s injury news was out before India’s first game against Pakistan in Kandy, Rohit Sharma decided against including Sanju Samson as a spare keeper-batter, instead playing Ishan Kishan in the middle order, a call that paid dividends in the end.

The left-handed batter, who generally opens during the IPL and also for India, and someone who had scored a double hundred in the ODIs, was made to bat number five – a position at which KL Rahul would play once he returns to the setup.

Against Pakistan, when the chips were down as India was reeling at 66 for four at one stage, Kishan and Pandya saved their sinking ship and added 138 runs for the fifth wicket. While Pandya scored 87, Ishan impressed everyone with his 81-ball 82, hitting nine fours and two sixes.

The Indian Team is likely to stick with the same XI for their second game Nepal, on Monday, September 4, in Kandy.

KL Rahul to undergo fitness test on September 4 as BCCI keen on picking him in World Cup squad – Reports

Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya probably played their best ODI innings till date as they stitched a 138-run partnership for the fifth wicket in Asia Cup 2023 match against Pakistan on September 2. The partnership, which turned out to be highest for India for fifth wicket against Pakistan in ODIs, rescued Men In Blue from a precarious position of 66/4.

While Kishan scored 82, Pandya hit 87 as India posted a decent total of 266 runs before being bowled out in 48.5 overs. The trio of Pak pacers Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah, however, made sure that all other India batsmen dance to their tunes in overcast Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Afridi first sent back Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (7) before coming back late in the innings to take two more wickets of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. Kishan and Pandya had joined each other on the crease in as early as 16th over after Haris Rauf sent back Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer post Afridi's twin strikes.

Speaking during the mid-inning show about Hardik Pandya, former Australia batsman Matthew Hayden said that the all-rounder played as per the situation and it was an innings which Rohit couldn't play.

"He (Hardik Pandya) should've scored 120. He knew he had Ishan Kishan at the other end. But he played really well. He did exactly what India needed at that situation, soaked in the pressure. He was able to manipulate strike, he was able to maneuver the spinners. He made sure Ishan Kishan was at ease at the other end. In my opinion, it was a captain's knock. Rohit Sharma couldn't but Hardik Pandya did," said Hayden during the mid-innings show on Star Sports.

As for the match, Pakistan's chase could materialise even for a single ball as rain played spoilsport and the game was called off without a ball being bowled by the Indian bowlers.

Asia Cup: Hardik Pandya played CAPTAIN'S KNOCK against Pakistan, says former Aussie batsman Matthew Hayden

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir, who was famous for having many confrontations on the ground, especially with Pakistan players, said that he's not in favour of on-field camaraderie between opposition players. Gambhir's comments came after Indian players were seen mingling with Pakistan players during the Asia Cup 2023 tie on Saturday, September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Gambhir, now a Member of Parliament in India, was part of the mid-game show on Star Network. He also said that because of this 'bonding' shown by the players, the games nowadays don't have much aggression.

“When you play on the field for your national team, you must leave the friendship outside the boundary ropes. Game face is a must. Friendship should stay outside. There has to be an aggression in the eyes of both sets of players. You can be as friendly as you want after those six or seven hours of cricket. Those hours are very important, because you’re not just representing yourself, you’re representing a nation of over a billion,” Gambhir said.

“These days you see players of rival teams patting each other on the back and exchanging fist bumps during a match. You would never see that a few years ago. You are playing a friendly match only,” he added.

The former cricketer, who had multiple fights with Pakistan players during his playing days, was also asked about his fight with Pak keeper Kamran Akmal in 2010 Asia Cup. Gambhir said that there's no bad blood between them despite that argument.

“We’re very good friends. In fact, I gave him a bat and he gave me a bat too. I played one whole season with a bat Kamran had given me. We spoke for an hour recently,” Gambhir said.

As of the match in Asia Cup 2023, India batted first and scored 266 in 48.5 overs before rain washed out the chase and the match was abandoned.

Asia Cup: Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir not in favour of FRIENDSHIP between players during match

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar thinks that India skipper Rohit Sharma is 'worrying too much' while playing against Shaheen Afridi and that he's a far better player. Notably, Afridi had castled Sharma masterfully during the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 tie on Saturday, September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Rohit, who was the first wicket to fall for India, was bowled through his defence by the Pak left-arm pacer. Shaheen had bowled previous two balls outside off to Rohit but brought the final ball of innings' fifth over into the batsman, uprooting Rohit's stumps. The India skipper scored only 11 off 22 balls before going back to pavilion.

Speaking on Afridi's spell, Akhtar remarked, "What a spell it was by Shaheen Afridi, what a bowler he is. Everyone knows what he will do, pitch it full and bring it back in, and in spite of that Rohit Sharma had no answer. But, what is Rohit Sharma supposed to do, in his defence he had last played him in 2022, he does not get the opportunity to face him too often."

“I don't think Rohit is able to read or understand Shaheen at all. The visual of Rohit Sharma being beaten like this was not good, he is a far better player than this. Rohit can bat much better than this, I think he is worrying too much,” he added. The former Pak speedster made the comments on his YouTube channel.

Afridi, in his next over, took out India's star batsman Virat Kohli as well. Kohli tried to play the ball towards third man for a single but the ball took an inside edge and hit the stumps, sending Pak fans in frenzy. Kohli could score only seven off four balls before getting out. Afridi came back again in 44th over and took two more wickets - in one over - sending back Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja.

India eventually finished their innings for 266 in 48.5 overs but rain played spoilsport and the chase couldn't take place and the match was abandoned.

Asia Cup: Shoaib Akhtar says India skipper Rohit Sharma 'worrying too much' while facing Shaheen Afridi

Pakistan Captain Babar Azam admits his side is not feeling the pressure of the high-voltage clash against India in Asia Cup 2023; instead, his team is a step ahead of their opponents for playing more games in Sri Lanka lately. While Pakistan began their Asia Cup campaign with a thumping win over Nepal in the opener in Multan, the upcoming clash would be India’s first in this six-team tournament.

As both teams gear up to face off in the marquee clash for a fight to stay on top and eye for the trophy, Babar backs his team to beat the odds and deliver on the D-day. Ahead of the start of this tournament, Pakistan played a two-match Test series in the Island Nation before taking on Afghanistan in the three-match ODIs. A few players were also part of the Lankan Premier League (LPL).

Speaking on the same lines, Babar said spending more time in Sri Lanka helped them get used to the conditions that give them an edge over India.

"We've been here for the last two months," Babar told media personals on Friday.

“We played the Tests [against Sri Lanka] here, then the LPL and then the Afghanistan series. We have a decent knowledge of the conditions, and the wicket looks like a sporting one. I've found Sri Lankan conditions pretty similar to Pakistani and Indian conditions. You take time when you come in to bat, and bowl in the right channels,” the Pakistan Captain added.

‘We want to continue our momentum

With the right team balance and the form on their side, Pakistan is confident of turning the tables against India. Breaking the notion of Pakistan starting the contest against their arch-rivals as the underdogs, Babar said his team is under no pressure and wants to build on the momentum instead.

Babar added he is happy with how his team is progressing and that he banks on the batting order to stand tall against a seam-heavy Indian attack.

"I don't think we feel the pressure of this game," he said.

"We're focusing on what we can control. We want to continue our momentum. The boys are excited. You know India-Pakistan is a high-intensity match, and the fans wait for it for a while. We're similarly excited. We're going to stick with the same top order; but if we don't get a good start, I am encouraged by the middle order stepping up. They're chipping in. We had been lagging in the middle order for a while, but they're responding well now,” Babar added.

Asia Cup 2023, Game 3 – India vs Pakistan – Match Preview, team line-ups and weather report

There will be more suspenseful chapters in the mother of all rivalries. In the first game, India is prepared to face Pakistan, a competitor. Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, spoke to the media at a conference.

Asia Cup 2023: India take on Pakistan in the Marquee clash

Pakistan fast bowlers were all over India during their Asia Cup 2023 match in Kandy, Sri Lanka on Saturday, September 2. Such was the impact of the three fast bowlers - Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf - that they even created history in regional tournament by sharing all 10 wickets among them. This was also the first time that pacers have accounted for all 10 wickets in an innings in Asia Cup.

It all started with Shaheen Afridi bowling an in-swinger which went past India skipper Rohit Sharma's defence and uprooted his off-stump. The left-arm fast bowler, who has been Achilles Heels for Indian top-order batsmen, struck again and cleaned up Virat Kohli in his next over to put India two down inside seven overs.

It was Haris Rauf again who broke the partnership by sending Ishan Kishan back to take this third and final wicket of the day in innings' 38th over. Pak skipper Babar Azam then brought Shaheen back in the 44th over and the southpaw took two wickets in the over, sending back both Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. Shaheen eventually finished with four wickets for just 35 in 10 overs.

Naseem then joined the party to wrap the tail and took all three wickets to end India's innings in 48.5 overs for 266 runs. Naseem also bowled brilliantly, giving away just 36 runs for his three wickets. As for the spinners, Pakistan used three of them and they went for 133 runs in 17 overs collectively.

Their lead spinner Shadab Khan gave away 57 in his nine overs while Mohammad Nawaz accounted for 55 runs in his eight overs. The third spinner, Agha Salman, bowled just four overs for 21 runs.

India make poor start

The Men in Blue did not have the best of starts after rain halted the play initially. However, Shaheen Afridi would then wreak havoc with quickfire wickets of Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (4). With India on the back foot, Pakistan further increased the pressure as they got the better of Shreyas Iyer (14) and Shubman Gill (10) reducing India to 66/4 in 14 overs. Haris Rauf got the better of the latter pair as he too joined the part for Pakistan.

Ishan, Hardik save India’s day

As India were struggling, Ishan and Hardik built a terrific 138-run stand for the fifth wicket as the Men in Blue came out of danger. Both the batters were aggressive with their approach as Ishan scored at a strike rate of 101 while Hardik was also scoring at almost 100. Ishan’s 82-run innings contained two sixes and nine fours while Hardik’s innings included one six and seven fours.

The Mumbai Indians batter justified his selection in the team and also became the fourth wicketkeeper to score a fifty against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, joining MS Dhoni. It was also Ishan’s fourth consecutive fifty in the 50-over format, having scored three during three during the West Indies tour.

On the other hand, once Ishan and Hardik were dismissed Pakistan were back in the contest as Afridi added two more wickets to his tally. Haris Rauf also added one more to his tally while Nassem Shah was also excellent in his approach with three wickets. Interestingly, all the 10 wickets for Pakistan were scalped by pacers, highlighting their dominance with the ball.

Asia Cup 2023: Ishan, Hardik lead India to respectable total after Shaheen Afridi wreaks havoc with ball

India batsman Shreyas Iyer revealed that he was 'nervous and had a sleepless night' ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 match against arch-rivals Pakistan. Iyer was included in the Asia Cup squad after recovering from a back injury and was included in the playing XI as well.

“I never imagined I’ll be playing in the Asia Cup. The recovery was slow and steady. I passed the fitness test one week before selection, and I was really happy with that,” said Iyer ahead of the match on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

“I was nervous last night, I couldn’t sleep. I am super excited to play this match against Pakistan. It’s a phenomenal feeling to be honest as they are the number 1 team at the moment,” Iyer added.

Talking about how's he feeling about being in the Playing XI, Iyer said that he feels privileged to be a part of this team.

“We are privileged to be a part of this team and journey with Rahul sir (Dravid) as the coach and under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. The spirits are high in the dressing room and we are looking forward to this game. Delighted to be playing against these (Afridi, Rauf, Naseem) bowlers, plan is just to watch the ball and play according to the situation,” he added.

The batsman, who was on the crease earlier than he expected, could just score only 14 runs and was the third wicket to fall. He came to bat after India lost two quick wickets inside seven overs after winning the toss. The first wicket for India to fall was Rohit who was clean bowled through his defence by Shaheen Afridi. The India skipper scored only 11 off 22 balls before going back.

In his next over, Afridi took out India's star batsman Virat Kohli who tried to play the ball towards third man for a single but the ball took an inside edge and hit the stumps. Haris Rauf then took over the reins and took the wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill to leave India four down for 66 in 15th over.

Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya then led India's recovery, adding 100-plus runs for the fifth wicket and taking India's score past 200.

Asia Cup: Shreyas Iyer reveals he had 'sleepless night' ahead of India vs Pakistan match

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned the Indian team’s selection in the Asia Cup clash against Pakistan at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele. India who opted to choose Shradul Thakur over Mohammed Shami for the clash started on a poor note as they lost star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma early in the innings. According to Manjrekar, India may have missed out on a trick by not playing Mohammed Shami as they lacked confidence in their current batting line-up.

Manjrekar questions selection

"Hearing murmurs that India wanted batting depth. But nobody is talking about bowling depth. Shardul Thakur is in and I am slightly against this thought. Is Mohammed Shami more a threat to Pakistan batters or Shardul Thakur?

"I wouldn't worry about batting depth. Somebody like a Shami on this pitch, especially when we have seen the ball moving around India should have gone in with 3 genuine bowlers - Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj, just like Pakistan have done," Manjrekar told Star Sports.

India opted to choose Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav as natural bowling options while Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur came in as bowling all-rounder options in the team. India also opted to bring in Shreyas Iyer in the team having missed the last few months due to injury. India also opted to go for Ishan Kishan as a natural wicketkeeper option with KL Rahul not available for the group stage. This prompted India to drop Suryakumar Yadav in the Playing XI.

At the time of writing, India were 111/4 with Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya in the middle. The Men in Blue lost Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (4) early while Shreyas Iyer scored 14 on his return to the Indian team. Shubman Gill stayed in the middle for India but ultimately was dismissed for 10. For Pakistan Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf both scalped two wickets each to give the Men in Green a good start.

Asia Cup 2023: Former cricketer questions India's Playing XI vs Pak, says 'this shows signs of insecurity'

The weather gods for the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 clash are not kind as the match was interrupted by showers in the first 30 minutes. While Rohit Sharma’s India are playing their first Asia Cup match, Pakistan can secure Super Four qualification with a win. However, those calculations could take a severe toll if the match gets washed out at Pallekele on Saturday, September 2. So what will happen if the match gets washed out?

Rain gods play spoilsport

Rain was always on the radar as there were 80 percent chances of showers on Saturday with both teams looking to clinch a win in the high-voltage clash. Rain briefly interrupted the clash on Saturday when India were 15/0 after four overs. The Indian team started well with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill before losing their path as the former was dismissed by Shaheen Shah Afridi while Virat Kohli also followed soon.

What will happen in case of washout?

If rain washes out the India vs Pakistan clash, both teams will be awarded one point each which will see Babar’s men clinch a place in the Super Four. In this case, India will need to avoid a defeat in the Nepal clash on Monday to clinch a Super Four spot. However, in case of a miracle if Nepal win the group stage meeting against India they will qualify for the Super Four.

Asia Cup 2023: Shreyas Iyer returns to Playing XI; Ishan Kishan, Shardul Thakur get nod vs Pakistan

India win toss

India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first in the challenging conditions of Pallekele. The Asia Cup contest between the arch-rivals is the 14th meeting between them with India leading the head-to-head 7-5. India won the group stage clash between the sides in the 2022 Asia Cup that was played in the T20I format while they lost in the Super Four stage.

Pakistan made no changes to the winning combination from the Nepal game. Babar Azam’s side will guarantee passage into the Super Four with a win while India will look to make a positive start to their Asia Cup campaign. Pakistan earlier beat Nepal by 238 runs to start their Asia Cup campaign.

Asia Cup 2023: What happens if India vs Pakistan clash gets washed out? | Know More

India are all set to begin their Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka and their Playing XI is going to be in the focus a lot. A lot of players are making their comebacks in ODI side including pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. While Rahul has already been ruled out of the first two games of the tournament as he recovers from a niggle, Iyer made it to the final XI.

Before these players were available, BCCI gave chances to a lot of players including Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan to name few. While India won some game, it recently lost a limited-overs series against West Indies and received a lot of criticism.

Speaking on the same, former Pak skipper Ramiz Raja also said that India are tinkering a lot with their final XI unlike Pakistan who, according to Raza, have a rather settled side.

Also Read: Sri Lanka Cricket suspends all domestic tournaments with immediate effect

“India might be a little rusty, they are still searching for the right combination. The one big reason for that is even in the World Cup year, they haven't succeeded in producing a settled unit. I'm actually shocked that they are tinkering unnecessarily with a winning combination, they experiment with batting order and the focus moves to something else,” said Ramiz on his official YouTube channel.

“If you ask anyone about Pakistan's playing XI, he will tell you without much of a thought. But if you ask someone about India's XI, there are still doubts. And this might benefit Pakistan,” added Raja.

Recently, India coach Rahul Dravid clarified on why there was a lot of 'experimenting,' saying that it wasn't for the sake of it. Dravid said players getting injured in space of two-three months forced them to give other players chances in the playing XI.

Asia Cup: Former skipper Ramiz Raja says India's doubts about Playing XI will benefit Pakistan

India and Pakistan are gearing up for the marquee clash in Asia Cup 2023, and former South Africa Captain AB de Villiers feels for the Men in Blue to stay on top, they must keep Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam quiet during the game. The ranked number one batter in ODIs, Babar hit 151 against Nepal in the previous match and looks in superb touch.

Hailing Pakistan’s modern-day great, de Villiers called Babar one of the best players to grace the game, adding he is a rock in Pakistan’s batting line-up. The Proteas veteran said that given the form Babar is in, if India manages to keep him at bay, they would increase their chances of walking out as winners.

“I love talking about Babar Azam because he is one of the best players we have ever seen play this game, and not just now. He is a huge rock in the Pakistan batting order. If India wants to keep Pakistan quiet, this is the guy to dismiss early because he keeps the batting line-up together and acts as the glue in the Pakistan middle-order,” de Villiers said, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Tipped by many to end up as the top-scorer not only in this six-team tournament but also during the upcoming World Cup 2023, de Villiers recalled the time when he first met Babar, adding he instantly knew the right-handed batter would do wonders in world cricket.

“I met him first when he [Babar] was very young but quickly realized that this guy is here to stay. He has hurt bowling attacks all around the world and in all formats. He is a fantastic player, and Pakistan need him in form for the Asia Cup and most importantly, for the World Cup,” the South African veteran added.

Babar’s rise put Pakistan on top

Being the captain of the top-ranked ODI side in the world, Babar completed his 19th One-Day against Nepal and became the quickest to do so. While he hasn’t played too many ODIs against India, given how less both countries play (only during ICC-related events and in the Asia Cup), Babar remains the threat for the seam-heavy Indian bowling attack.

Meanwhile, India and Pakistan will face off in an ODI for the first time in four years. India leads the head-to-head race against Pakistan (4-1) in the past five outings in this format.

The match is to take place in Pallekele, Kandy.

Babar Azam is one of best ever, India must keep him quiet: Ab de Villiers ahead of marquee clash in Asia Cup

Shreyas Iyer has made his return to the Indian team’s Playing XI against Pakistan in the Asia Cup group stage as the two-arch rivals lock horns at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele. Iyer, last seen in international action in March against Australia was subject to fitness, but has made the Playing XI. As expected, Ishan Kishan also made the Playing XI against Pakistan while Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav were also included while there was no place for Suryakumar Yadav.

Iyer In, Surya Out

While it was always a tussle for a place in the middle order, Iyer fully fit and recovered and got the faith of captain Rohit Sharma in the Playing XI. He missed the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Kolkata Knight Riders while also missing the West Indies and Ireland tour. On the flip side, Suryakumar had to drop to the bench with Kishan making the Playing XI. Suryakumar had a tough outing in the ODIs against Australia in March which could have seen him miss out on a place in the Playing XI.

India win toss

India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first in the challenging conditions of Pallekele. The Asia Cup contest between the arch-rivals is the 14th meeting between the sides with India leading the head-to-head 7-5. India won the group stage clash between the sides in the 2022 Asia Cup that was played in the T20I format while they lost in the Super Four stage.

Pakistan on the flip side, made no changes to the winning combination from the Nepal game as they went unchanged. Babar Azam’s side will guarantee passage into the Super Four with a win while India will look to make a positive start to their Asia Cup campaign. Pakistan earlier beat Nepal by 238 runs to start their Asia Cup campaign.
