India announced a 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The seven-time winners named a strong unit for the continental tournament, which gets underway on August 30. While KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer return after a long layoff, the squad also comprises Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna. Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission whereas Sanju Samson was named as the sole reserve player.&nbsp;

While a majority have been impressed with the squad, a few have raised questions about Surya's inclusion. It is to be noted that the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter has failed to replicate his T20I success in the 50-over format and has managed only 511 runs in 26 ODIs, at 24.33. He even struggled in the West Indies ODIs. On the other hand, Tilak Varma -- who is yet to debut in ODIs -- got the nod ahead of Samson despite the latter's good run in ODIs. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Samson averages over 50 in 13 ODIs. Thus, many believe Samson should have been in the main squad rather than going as a travelling reserve for the continental tournament.

<h2>'I know that he's a player that we all love to watch, but he is....'</h2>

Former Australia player Tom Moody reacted to India's Asia Cup squad and feels Surya is lucky to be part of the final 17. "The player that I think is lucky to be in that side is Suryakumar Yadav. I know that he's a player that we all love to watch, but he is yet to really master the 50-over game. I think he's played over 20 matches now and at a very modest return," Moody said on Star Sports.

“And to me, there are better options available. I would have much rather seen a younger player like a Jaiswal in that side. Or take that position, and play a wrist spinner. Um, you know another wrist spinner," Moody opined.

The Australian further added, "He's a genius in T20 cricket. But the 50-over cricket is a completely different format, and he's yet to really crack the code for that. You know, I just don't think he's gonna do it at the last minute."

India are placed in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan and Nepal. The Men in Blue, who are the seven-time champions, will kick off their campaign on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka whereas the competition gets underway on August 30, in Multan, Pakistan, with the home side taking on Nepal.&nbsp;

'There are better options available': Ex-Aus star feels THIS player is 'lucky' to be in India's Asia Cup squad

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup. It&nbsp;comprises several star players and also sees the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. However, Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission whereas Sanju Samson also failed to make it to the final squad but will travel as a reserve player. While Samson failed to make the cut, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma,&nbsp;uncapped in ODIs, are part of the squad. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reviewed the squad selection and feels Samson could have been included in the final 17.&nbsp;

<h2>'Sanju Samson and his&nbsp;fans&nbsp;might consider themselves slightly unlucky'</h2>

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "The first big news is that Sanju Samson's name is not there. In whose place could his name have come? He would have come in place of either Tilak or Surya. He could have become a part of the 17 in place of either of them. Sanju Samson's fans and Sanju Samson himself might consider themselves slightly unlucky because his performances are good in ODIs as of now as well. He has an average of over 50 and he scored a fifty in the West Indies also. There is no doubt that he plays well. He has a little work experience as well."

On the other hand, Chopra opined on Suryakumar and said, "Suryakumar Yadav's story in ODI cricket has not been good. We all know that he is a very good player and we also want his ODI career to flourish but the truth is that he hasn't been able to understand the ODI template thus far. The problem is that you have very little time. " He added, "To be very honest, my initial thought was that if a wicketkeeper has to play in the middle order, Sanju Samson is definitely the second option after KL Rahul. However, if a place can be created as an opener, then Ishan Kishan, without a shadow of a doubt, is your second wicketkeeper."

Backing Chopra's claims, Samson has done reasonably well in the ODI format. The right-hander has 390 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of&nbsp;55.71 and a strike rate of&nbsp;104.00 along with three half-centuries. His T20I numbers aren't impressive but Samson has done well in ODIs. Meanwhile, Surya has struggled in the 50-over format, managing 511 runs in 26 ODIs at an average of 24.33. Varma, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in the format. He got picked in the final 17 on the basis of a promising start to his international cricket career during India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and USA.

India open their campaign in the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. Samson could've been picked ahead of Tilak Varma or Suryakumar: Chopra reviews India's Asia Cup squad

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reappointed veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as the captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup 2023. Shakib has replaced seasoned opener Tamim Iqbal, who after reverting his retirement call early in July, got ruled out of the six-team tournament in Pakistan and Sri Lanka due to a back injury.

Shakib will lead Bangladesh&nbsp;side in ODIs for the first time since 2017, and with this appointment, he is now the captain across all formats. He will take over the charge for the Asia Cup, the New Zealand home series that follows and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, for which they will travel to India.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan&nbsp;made this announcement at his residence.&nbsp;

"Shakib Al Hasan is the captain for the Asia Cup, New Zealand series and World Cup," he said.&nbsp;

"We will speak more to him when he returns to Bangladesh [from Lanka Premier League]. We have to know his long-term plan. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday. But it is better if we talk to him in person since he is busy with a franchise league currently. We will also talk about which format he will keep leading, whether it is all three formats or one or two of them."

Nazmul said there was no alternate option other than Shakib for the post.&nbsp;

"There was never any confusion. I told you before. He is the obvious choice. Who else can lead? But we had to talk to him before appointing him. Nobody should think anything else. Shakib is the captain. He was always the main choice," Nazmul said.

<h2>Asia Cup, World Cup squad to be same – Nazmul</h2>

Since most of the teams are yet to announce their squads for the Asia Cup and the World Cup, BCB President said for Bangladesh, the squad would be the same for both tournaments.

"They have just one spot open. We still don't know about Tamim Iqbal who is recovering from a back injury. We might try one or two openers in the Asia Cup," he said.

Bangladesh will face Sri Lanka in their Asia Cup 2023 opener in Pallekele on August 31 and then play against Afghanistan in their next group game on September 3 in Lahore, Pakistan.

Bangladesh reappoint Shakib Al Hasan as captain for Asia Cup and World Cup 2023

On Monday (August 21), India's 17-member squad for the Asia Cup was&nbsp;announced. While it saw the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, some big names were also missing, such as Yuzvendra Chahal, Umran Malik and&nbsp;Shikhar Dhawan. While not many would have considered Dhawan's name for the Asia Cup, with the left-hander not being in India's scheme of things since 2023, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar opined on his future.

"Rohit is not a bad player, Shubman has had a phenomenal year. Ishan Kishan (is another one). Shikhar has been a terrific player for India. At the moment three guys are doing well and you can fit only 15. Unfortunately, someone has to fit. At the moment these are our preferred openers," Agarkar said while talking to the reporters after the Asia Cup squad announcement.

Shikhar Dhawan has been one of India's most prolific batters in the modern era. Dhawan formed a lethal opening pair with current captain Rohit over the years and remained India's consistent performer in ICC events (during the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy and 2015 ODI World Cup) but his stocks declined since 2021. And Shubman Gill's emergence, along with Ishan Kishan's attack-mode of play, led to his ouster in recent times. While he led India's second-stringed line-up in away tours (in New Zealand, Sri Lanka, etc.) and led in a few series at home as well, the 37-year-old has now fallen way behind in the pecking order.

Dhawan has played 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is. The white-ball legend&nbsp;has amassed&nbsp;6,793 and&nbsp;1,759 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively with 17&nbsp;tons and 50 fifties&nbsp;in the shorter formats overall. He also has 2,315 runs in 34 Tests, with a best of 190.

Talking about Rohit-led India's Asia Cup campaign, they begin their run on September 2 versus arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele. The tournament kicks off in Multan, Pakistan on August 30. The upcoming edition will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Shikhar Dhawan's potential India comeback after Asia Cup snub

On Monday (August 21), the BCCI selection committee, headed by former pacer Ajit Agarkar, announced Rohit Sharma-led India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup. The upcoming continental tournament is set to kick off on August 30, in Pakistan, whereas the Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2, in Pallekele as the competition will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The&nbsp;squad comprises star players, and&nbsp;sees the return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna in the 50-over setup with less than two months for the home ODI World Cup. However, the spin department does not feature the 33-year-old Yuzvendra Chahal.

Chahal hasn't been a regular in the ODI setup with Kuldeep Yadav&nbsp;doing well, whereas the Indian team management cannot afford to play the two together as Rohit &amp; Co. are focused on adding&nbsp;more depth in their&nbsp;batting.

After the Asia Cup snub, Chahal took to his official account on X, earlier known as Twitter, to react with a cryptic post.

&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Speaking to the reporters after India's squad&nbsp;announcement, Rohit opened up on Chahal's omission and has refused to rule out any player from India's&nbsp;scheme of things with regard to the upcoming ODI World Cup, beginning at home on October 05. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

Rohit further highlighted, "We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us."

&nbsp;

The 36-year-old&nbsp;added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

The squad comprises star players, and sees the return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna in the 50-over setup with less than two months for the home ODI World Cup. However, the spin department does not feature the 33-year-old Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal hasn't been a regular in the ODI setup with Kuldeep Yadav doing well, whereas the Indian team management cannot afford to play the two together as Rohit & Co. are focused on adding more depth in their batting. After the Asia Cup snub, Chahal took to his official account on X, earlier known as Twitter, to react with a cryptic post. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9." Rohit further highlighted, "We want somebody who can bat at that spot. He can do that for us." The 36-year-old added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. Yuzvendra Chahal reacts after being snubbed from India's Asia Cup squad, shares cryptic post

Indian captain Rohit Sharma explained the reason for overlooking Yuvzendra Chahal as the BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced a strong 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The squad comprises Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav as the spinners but Chahal found no place. Thus, Hitman pointed out the reason behind the 33-year-old's omission and stated that 'World Cup door is not closed on anyone'.

'Only way we could have...': Rohit on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, says 'World Cup door not closed on anyone'

On Monday afternoon (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee picked a strong squad which sees the return of KL Rahul and&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer whereas pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have also&nbsp;made an ODI comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. The duo marked their international return&nbsp;during the ongoing Ireland T20I series opener.

The squad comprises 17 players whereas Sanju Samson has been named as a backup. The main squad also includes Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his debut in the ODI format. Varma, after a stellar run in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians (MI), got his maiden international cap during the India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and Florida. The left-hander impressed with scores of 39, 51, 49*, 7*, 27.&nbsp;

Former India pacer Agarkar, who is spearheading the BCCI selection committee, opined on Varma's inclusion and said after the squad announcement, "In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament."

He added, "And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So fortunately we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad."

Varma is currently part of the Bumrah-led Indian squad for the ongoing three T20Is versus Ireland in Dublin. So far, he hasn't managed to do anything significant in the two games but will aim for a big score in the final T20I with India already having an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Varma's inclusion has strengthened India's batting line-up. Now, the national side&nbsp;not only have another left-hander&nbsp;for the middle and lower order but the 20-year-old can also bowl a bit. It will be interesting to see if he makes his ODI debut in the upcoming continental tournament, where India kick off their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

India are placed in Group A along with Babar Azam-led Men in Green and Nepal.

'A left-hander looks very promising': Ajit Agarkar on Tilak Varma's inclusion in India's Asia Cup squad

Asia Cup 2023 India Squad announced: Ahead of the 2023 Asia Cup, India announced its 17-member squad on Monday. The announcement was followed by a press conference from Captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar in Delhi.&nbsp;

With the ODI World Cup on the horizon, India's performance in the continental tournament - which will be contested in a 50-over format this year - will be critical to their chances at the flagship event later this year in their home country. Major concerns have been raised about the fitness of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have both been recovering from thigh and back injuries, respectively.

With Jasprit Bumrah back, bowling at full tilt and leading the side in the Ireland T20I series, there's a big positive in terms of the bowling department. Mohammed Shami, who has stayed out of action since the 2023 World Test Championship Final is also likely to make his return. But the bigger concerns for India are in their batting, specifically in the middle order.

<h2>What Ravi Shastri said ahead of the Team India squad announcement</h2>

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that the Indian squad need more all-rounders for the 2023 ODI World Cup.&nbsp;

When asked about his opinion with regards to the 15-player squad India would go within the marquee event, Shastri told Star Sports, “I think to be fair, I will go with both the all-rounders – Axar and Shardul, it gives me an opportunity. And keep Sanju Samson on standby in case something happens to the keeper there, where he can just fly out.”

Asia Cup 2023 India Squad announced

The initial sureties are that Tilak Varma has been named while Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have been included. Yuzvendra Chahal is dropped and Shubhman Gill is in.&nbsp;

Indian Squad announced:&nbsp;

Reserve: Sanju Samson

World Cup squad to be chosen from among these players

This is not an official preliminary squad but Agarkar says that it is "obvious" that the World Cup team will be chosen from among these players. So this, for now, is the de facto preliminary squad for the World Cup.

Asia Cup 2023: 9 days to go. Here's how to watch live streaming of Asia Cup matches in your country

Indian captain Rohit Sharma attended the press conference on Sunday in New Delhi for the Asia Cup 2023 squad announcement. With BCCI naming a 17-man team for the six-team tournament starting August 30, a few old faces returned to the ODI setup for the first time in many months, including KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah.

The inclusion of Suryakumar Yadav and the introduction of young Tilak Varma in the squad add value, and Rohit said the message is clear to all batters that everyone must be flexible in batting at any position, even if it means coming out of their comfort zone spot. From having no one to fill the vacant number four and five slots to roping in four players for those places, the Asia Cup squad announcement comes as a success at the right time for India. The presence of keeper-batter Ishan Kishan as a backup to Rahul ticks another box, as the top three remain the same – Rohit, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. ALSO READ: KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer return as India name 17-man squad for Asia Cup 2023 For the lower order, India has all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja, while Axar Patel is picked as the spare spin option. Speaking to the media after the Asia Cup squad announcement, Rohit said, "One thing I want in this team is to make sure everyone is okay to bat anywhere.” "You need flexibility, guys who can step up at any position. No one should say, 'I'm good at this position or I'm good at that position'. You want guys to be able to bat anywhere, that's the message conveyed to every individual. Not now, but over the last 3-4 years. "I know it's tough for guys on the outside to understand why a guy who bats at six is batting at four, but the message has been given. You don't want to be handicapped or stuck with one player batting in one position. "Having said that, you want to get the best out of players in certain positions. All seven-eight [positions] are open to anyone, that's the message we have sent out for so many years now,” Rohit added. India overlook Chahal for Asia Cup While most of the picks were always on the cards, India opted not to pick either a finger spinner or a leg-spinner, with Kuldeep Yadav as the only specialist spinner in the 17-man team. The exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal from the line-up surprised fans. Here is India’s 17-man squad for Asia Cup 2023 – Rohit Sharma (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Prasidh Krishna WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Sports should not be mixed with politics, our team will travel to India for World Cup: Pak foreign ministry

As India gear up for the upcoming Asia Cup and ICC ODI World Cup, the anticipation around the squad is getting quite an attention. While the date to announce the provisional squad for the World Cup is September 5, India will be naming their Asia Cup squad on August 21.

The main conundrum India selectors face is the wicketkeeper. Ever since Rishabh Pant got injured in a horrific car crash in December last year, the place has acted as a musical chair between KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. While Rahul is the better batsman among all three, Kishan is closest to Pant in terms of style and aggression.

Talking about the conundrum, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly thinks that India should go with Kishan as their wicketkeeper-batsman.

"Pant is the best wicketkeeper in the country, but you can see Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul (depending on his fitness); these two will be right up in Rohit's and Rahul's minds. I like Ishan Kishan because he just opens up the game for any team. I am sure Dravid will keep him in his plans," Ganguly said at a recent event.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri, speaking to Star Sport a while back, had also said that giving Rahul both responsibilities (batting and keeping) in a tournament like Asia Cup is a 'no-no.'

"See when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking about keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no-no," Shastri had explained.

The Asia Cup starts August 30 with India playing its first match on September 2 against Pakistan. The World Cup is, however, a bit away with the scheduled date being October 5.

Asia Cup 2023: 10 days to go, Check date, time, venue, format, India vs Pakistan match & all you need to know

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is said to have held a two-hour long closed-door meeting with India men’s team coach Rahul Dravid in Miami ahead of the USA leg against West Indies.

The two powerful men in Indian cricket handpicked several topics and discussed the future plan as we inch closer to two mega events – Asia Cup 2023 and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Per a report in Cricbuzz, this meeting happened before the final two T20Is against West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida, on August 12 and 13. While the Indian Team was putting up at Marriot in Miami, Dravid drove down to a separate hotel where Shah (who was in the USA for a personal visit) was staying.

The BCCI secretary was also seen in attendance during the fifth and final T20I.

Although from the outside it might appear like a routine meeting between two top bosses, the significance of this shall not be underestimated. With India facing several questions – mostly regarding selection (particularly for the number four and five spots in the ODIs) and preparation for the two multi-team events, this meeting is expected to&nbsp;have covered these topics.

Also, considering the preparatory camp scheduled to begin on August 24 in Alur, Bengaluru, discussions around the same are said to have taken place.

<h2>India suffer setback in the Caribbean&nbsp;</h2>

India’s tour of the West Indies was the starting point of the roadmap to the World Cup, and it’s fair to say the Men in Blue left several questions unanswered. While India reigned supreme in the Tests and three ODIs, they lost the five-match T20Is 2-3 (for the first time against West Indies).&nbsp;

With a relatively younger squad at the helm considering next year’s T20 World Cup in this part of the world, the Indian Team failed to make the most of their chances and fell shy of maintaining their winning streak in the shortest format.&nbsp;

While they came second in the format in which West Indies are considered kings, India has shifted their attention to the Ireland T20Is.

Following that, the Asia Cup 2023 (co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka this time) will get underway. After that, the Indian Team will host five-time World Cup winners Australia in a short three-match ODIs, starting September 22 in Mohali.

After the end of this series, the much-awaited ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will begin in India on October 5, with the warm-up matches starting on September end.&nbsp;

After that, the Indian Team will host five-time World Cup winners Australia in a short three-match ODIs, starting September 22 in Mohali. After the end of this series, the much-awaited ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will begin in India on October 5, with the warm-up matches starting on September end. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Jay Shah held a two-hour long meeting with Rahul Dravid in Miami ahead of USA leg against West Indies

The wait for India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad could finally come to an end on Monday, August 21 according to the latest reports from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It is expected that skipper Rohit Sharma will attend the selection meeting in New Delhi on Monday. The board is also expecting positive news on the fitness&nbsp;of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

<h2>Rahul, Iyer fit?</h2>

The much-anticipated team announcement for the Asia Cup has been delayed due to the medical reports of Iyer and Rahul. The duo was not at a hundred per cent at the start of the week and could have missed out in the final selection, however, a good four-five days recovery period has boosted their chances of a return to the team. The BCCI wanted both the players to be match-fit before announcing&nbsp;the squad.

As things stand, the selection panel led by former pacer Ajit Agarkar will discuss with skipper Rohit before opting to include the duo. According to reports, both Iyer and Rahul are expected to make the 15-member squad (or extended) and will travel to Sri Lanka.

Players like Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan along with skipper Rohit are guaranteed to make the squad. Ishan is expected to be the backup option as a wicketkeeper if the team management decides to play Rahul as first-choice keeper. Shardul Thakur will also make the squad as back-up to Hardik Pandya.

<h2>Who could miss out?</h2>

Sanju Samson looks to be the biggest name likely to be omitted if Rahul makes the squad, while the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma would also have to leave the national team set-up with the competition for places in the team. The major talking point for the selectors will be the use of extra spinner as India have three frontline spinners in their ranks.

As things stand, all three spinners – Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel have a strong case to make the squad. With a lack of left-handers in the squad and batting ability as plus, Axar is almost guaranteed to be in the squad. This could mean, India could either take one extra spinner or risk dropping either Kuldeep or Chahal.

Asia Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma to attend selection meeting in Delhi on Aug 21; Rahul, Iyer likely to return

Jasprit Bumrah returns: Major competitions missed by India pacer since mid-2022

Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-string&nbsp;Indian team in the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, with the series opener on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the forthcoming 50-over Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 (to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The continental tournament will be an ideal dress rehearsal for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. for the home ODI World Cup which commences on October 5 in Ahmedabad. At present, most are awaiting the start of the Asia Cup with the Indian&nbsp;squad likely to be announced on August 20.

Before India's official squad announcement, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh picked his 15-man Indian team for the multi-nation tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran firstly spoke at length on India's tour of West Indies -- where they lost the five T20Is -- and then shifted focus to the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

Harbhajan said, "I thought India would win that series easily (the WI T20Is, which Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. lost 2-3). But the result has left many shocked and concerned. I was taken aback as well because West Indies, a team that did not make the World Cup, beat us. This indeed is a big achievement for West Indies, but a major concern for India. Yes, Kohli and Rohit weren't there, and they won't stay for long, but this young brigade that had toured West Indies has learned a lot from this. I previously said that India can make 2-3 teams, and they still can, but the results are yet to reflect."

Bhajji then shifted focus to the Asia Cup and picked his 15, including 'proven player' KL Rahul, but his list didn't include Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer. Both Iyer and Rahul are nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru.&nbsp;However, there are more positive developments with regard to the latter's fitness. On Rahul, Harbhajan said, "He is a proven player and if you want to see him in the World Cup squad, this is the right time to bring him back."

The former off-spinner's list didn't comprise Samson either, who averages 55.71 in ODIs. Instead, he went ahead with Suryakumar Yadav who has averaged&nbsp;less than 12 in the last nine innings in the format. Moreover, he backed&nbsp;Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as India's spin-bowling options and added Tilak Verma in the mix as well.

India open their campaign on September 02 versus Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. They are placed in Group A along with the Men in Green and Nepal.

No Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer! Harbhajan Singh names his India squad for Asia Cup 2023

Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will pick the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 on August 20, Sunday. The six-team tournament, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will see its opener getting played at the Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan&nbsp;on August 30 (between Pakistan and Nepal). While the onus would remain on returning Jasprit Bumrah and fit-again KL Rahul, latest reports suggest Sanju Samson could get dropped from the 15-member squad.

The right-handed keeper-batter, who endured a mediocre run in the white-ball series against the West Indies, scoring nine and 51 in two ODIs and 12, 7 and 13 in the three T20I matches, is said to have wasted his golden chance of fighting for a spot in the XI for Asia Cup and World Cup 2023. Besides these numbers, his manner of getting out concerned the selectors more.

As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), the selectors are ready to overlook Samson for the two upcoming mega events, as KL Rahul is reported to have regained full fitness and is ready to bag his long-lost number five spot (as a keeper-batter) in the ODI side. Even with Ishan Kishan around, Indian Team and selectors are comfortable with that one spot.&nbsp;

"Right now, the selectors are likely to only pick the Asia Cup team. The World Cup squad will mostly be picked later," a source close to the information told TOI.&nbsp;

When detailed about why there is a delay in the squad announcement, the source said because the status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer remains unclear, the selection committee is waiting for them to play a practice match so they can take a call on the final 15.&nbsp;

Though Rahul will get picked, Iyer is said to be away from attaining full fitness.&nbsp;

"Rahul is by and large fit and is 'keeping wickets too, while Shreyas Iyer (operated for a back injury) is still not 100%. Both have taken part in match simulations at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and will play a practice match soon. The fitness of the players who are back from the West Indies tour will also be assessed by the team and NCA's physios. Hence the delay in naming the team," the source said.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Eyes on Prasidh Krishna’</h2>

With seamer Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna back in the India squad for the Ireland T20Is after a lengthy injury layoff, the source said selectors are keen on keeping an eye on their performances.&nbsp;

With Mohammed Siraj and Shami set to retain their places in the 15-man squad, the addition of Krishna will add a new dimension to their line-up.

"Prasidh can generate pace and bounce and will give a new dimension to our pace attack. Before they pick the team for the Asia Cup, it will be nice if the selectors get to watch both Bumrah and Prasidh bowl in the opening T20I against Ireland on August 18," the source added.

From Sachin Tendulkar to Suresh Raina: Top six Indian batters with most runs in Asia Cup (ODIs)

Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on August 13 (Sunday). This was India's first-ever five-match T20I series defeat and their maiden bilateral series loss to the Windies, comprising a minimum of three games, since 2006. Throughout the series, captain Hardik failed to impress with his decision-making whereas also struggled with the bat.

Hardik ended with 77 runs in five games, at a strike rate of 110. With him being rested for the upcoming three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, the all-rounder will now gear up for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which kicks off on August 30. It will serve as an ideal dress rehearsal for the Asian sides before the ODI World Cup in India, in October-November.

Before the Asia Cup, former Indian stumper Parthiv analysed Hardik's captaincy in the WI T20Is and called it a 'work in progress'. In addition, he was concerned with his form and feels the 29-year-old needs runs under his belt before the CWC '23 edition.

Highlighting how Hardik did not use Axar Patel properly in the WI T20Is, Patel told Cricbuzz, "Against Nicholas Pooran, he (Hardik Pandya) gave that over to Axar Patel and not bowling Yuzvendra Chahal. Bowling changes and the utilisation of the bowlers are something that tells me that Hardik, the captain for India, is still a work in progress. "

He added, "And there is obviously a little concern about his batting. He needs runs. He didn't get runs in the IPL, he didn't get runs in the last couple of series as well. India would want to get some runs for Hardik Pandya in the Asia Cup or the series against Australia before the World Cup."

Hardik only played one good knock in the WI tour, during the ODI series decider where he ended with an entertaining 70 not out. With the ball, he accounted for five scalps in eight white-ball games in West Indies and USA.

Hardik also had a moderate run&nbsp;in IPL 2023, ending with 346 runs at 136.75 (along with&nbsp;three wickets). He did play out the situation with caution in a few games versus New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia early this year, during the home ODIs. However, the ODI vice-captain will be aware that he needs to be at his all-round best, especially with the bat, heading&nbsp;into the 50-over World Cup.

India would want Hardik Pandya to get some runs in Asia Cup ahead of CWC '23, feels former Indian stumper

Virat Kohli batted only twice during India's just-concluded all-format tour of West Indies. He played the two Tests and ODI series opener before being rested for the final two games and returned home&nbsp;not being part of the T20I setup (since the 2022 T20 World Cup). During his limited time in the middle, Kohli took his international century tally to 76 with a fine 121 in the second and final Test.&nbsp;

When Kohli got to his 76th ton, talks resumed whether he would surpass Sachin Tendulkar's 100 centuries record, most by any batter at the international level. Being rested for majority of the ODIs, the former Indian captain's WI tour ended pretty soon and, thus, he could not add more to his tally.

He will now gear up for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023, in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, starting on August 30, which will soon be followed by the home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

While many believe he will be keen to come close to Tendulkar's tally and aim to break it soon, in the coming years, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa rubbished all such claims.

Uthappa, part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup win under MS Dhoni, feels Kohli isn't bothered about personal records and will be focusing on winning games for India in the upcoming Asia Cup and CWC '23.

Speaking to Times of India, the former player said. "Virat (Kohli) doesn't really care about breaking records anymore. We as people and fans are obsessed with it. He would much rather win matches for India irrespective of those hundreds. Virat's focus will be on winning matches for India in the Asia Cup and World Cup. He doesn't really care about the records."

Uthappa added, "Whether he (Virat) achieves that milestone (breaking Sachin's ODI centuries record) during the Asia Cup, World Cup or at any (other) point in his career, it doesn't matter because his sole focus is on winning matches for India, not his hundreds."

At present, the 34-year-old Kohli has a chance to break Tendulkar's record. He still has plenty of cricket left in him even if he only plays Tests and ODIs. However, he will be focused on the larger picture, i.e. of ending India's ten-year-long ICC title drought with a win in the home 50-over World Cup at home later this year.

He doesn't really care about the records." Also read: 'India played with 10 players': Aakash Chopra baffled with Hardik Pandya's tactics after WI T20Is loss Uthappa added, "Whether he (Virat) achieves that milestone (breaking Sachin's ODI centuries record) during the Asia Cup, World Cup or at any (other) point in his career, it doesn't matter because his sole focus is on winning matches for India, not his hundreds." At present, the 34-year-old Kohli has a chance to break Tendulkar's record. He still has plenty of cricket left in him even if he only plays Tests and ODIs. However, he will be focused on the larger picture, i.e. of ending India's ten-year-long ICC title drought with a win in the home 50-over World Cup at home later this year. Uthappa feels Virat Kohli not bothered about personal feats, focused on doing well in Asia Cup, CWC '23

KL Rahul is nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru. Ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement, the Indian team management is keenly awaiting the final fitness report of Rahul as well as Shreyas Iyer as their middle-order woes continue. While reports have been positive with regard to Rahul's fitness, it remains to be seen if he makes the squad for the upcoming continental tournament, starting on August 30.

While there is no doubt that India desperately need both Rahul and Iyer back in the squad, ex-Indian head coach Ravi Shastri doesn't want the former to speed up&nbsp;his return for the Asia Cup, to be jointly hosted by&nbsp;Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Shastri feels it might not be fair on Rahul to return in the multi-nation tournament and also don the gloves.

Speaking on Star Sports' Selection Day show, Shastri opined, "See when when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no no."

Thus, Shastri feels India can opt for Ishan Kishan's services, an attacking left-hander who can play at the top or in the middle and keep wickets instead of rushing for Rahul's return. Rohit Sharma-led India are yet to announce the squad for the mega event, where they open their campaign on September 2 versus Pakistan. The seven-time winners are placed in Group A with Pakistan and Nepal.

Should nearly-fit KL Rahul be a part of India's XI in Asia Cup 2023? Ravi Shastri shares his take

On Tuesday (August 15), former Indian captain Virat Kohli took to his official Instagram account to slam reports which claimed that he will build&nbsp;a cricket pitch at his new farmhouse in Alibaug. It is to be noted that Kohli-Anushka Sharma's new farmhouse is under construction at the moment. Recently, they were also seen paying a visit to the farmhouse to check on the details of the construction.

While there were rumours that the star batter is investing in building a cricket pitch at the farmhouse, he has now dismissed all such claims. "Bachpan se jo akhbaar Padha hai, wo bhi fake news chaapne lage ab (The newspaper&nbsp;which I have read since childhood, has&nbsp;also started publishing fake news)," said Kohli on his Instagram story on Tuesday.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa opined on whether Kohli can break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 centuries. Kohli took his century tally to 76 after the West Indies tour, where he only played an ODI and two Tests. In this regard, Uthappa told TOI, "Virat (Kohli) doesn't really care about breaking records any more. We as people and fans are obsessed with it. India and Pakistan are set to lock horns in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, which will be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The upcoming continental tournament kicks off on August 30 and arch-rivals India and Pakistan will lock horns on September 02 in Pallekele. The two sides are likely to meet in the Super Four round and can also lock horns in the summit clash, to be held in Colombo on September 17.

Ahead of the tournament, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria feels Babar Azam &amp; Co. have the edge over Team India as the latter are unsettled at the moment.

<h2>'Pakistan have the edge, as India don't look settled at the moment'</h2>

Kaneria said during a live session on his official YouTube channel, "Pakistan have the edge, as India don't look settled at the moment. They don't know which fast bowlers are going to play. In their spin department, Yuzvendra Chahal has been inconsistent. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja should be the three spinners, according to me. If they want a spinner on standby, Ravi Bishnoi should get the nod."

The former Pakistan spinner further added, "KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been practicing at the NCA and are mostly likely going to be included in India's squad for the upcoming major tournaments. However, you cannot bring someone into the team just on the basis of practice. They will have to play matches and should be added to the team only if they show good form there."

The national side will also hope for Iyer and Rahul's comeback ahead of the Asia Cup as their backups, Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav, continue to remain inconsistent.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been keeping a close eye on the progress of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul as the duo enters the final phase of their rehabilitation. It is thought that the selectors'&nbsp;panel wants a final medical report of the duo before announcing the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. Both Rahul and Iyer are likely to make the squad for the continental showpiece (if fit) that starts on August 30.

<h2>BCCI’s stance on Rahul, Iyer</h2>

"Keeping 50 overs in Sri Lankan heat would take a toll and NCA can only give him (Rahul) fit certificate if he is able to don the big gloves without any apparent discomfort. Also, they haven't played anything and the first international game against Pakistan (on September 2) could be a bit too much of a pressure. But then time is of the essence," a BCCI source tracking the developments said.

India are sweating on the fitness of both Rahul and Iyer as they face a race against time to be fit for the Asia Cup. Iyer missed the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season while Rahul did not feature in the final phase of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) season. Both are recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

<h2>When is the team selection?</h2>

If everything goes right, the selectors' panel led by Ajit Agarkar is likely to announce the 15-member squad before the weekend. Both Iyer and Rahul will only make the team if deemed fit or else Ishan Kishan will continue as the first-choice wicketkeeper and will keep gloves. Iyer’s situation is also straightforward.&nbsp;If he is fit, he will come at Sanju Samson’s expense and will play at number four. If this is not the case, Samson will continue to feature in the 15-member squad.

It is also thought that the board members are keeping tabs on Prithvi Shaw as he continues to impress in the UK’s One Day Cup. However, he is not part of the plans for the Asia Cup or the World Cup.

India will start their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Pakistan on Sunday, August 3.

Asia Cup 2023: BCCI's stance on Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul revealed as deadline for squad selection nears

From colossal failure in SA to WI T20I series loss: Team India's shocking LOWS in Rahul Dravid's tenure

Bangladesh has named a strong 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023, starting August 30 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will lead the side&nbsp;as announced on Friday, while Mahmudullah got dropped. In the absence of seasoned opener Tamim Iqbal, who is recovering from a back injury, Bangladesh included uncapped Tanzid Hasan as his backup at the top of the order.

The 22-year-old young batter is one of the two openers picked, while chief selector Minhajul Abedin also roped in Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan and Nasum Ahmed to strengthen the squad.&nbsp;

Opener Naim and Shamim got picked on the back of their performances against Afghanistan in the bilateral series earlier, whereas Minhajul brought Mahedi to increase depth in the bowling department.

A familiar-looking Bangladesh side includes seamers like Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam and Ebadot Hossain. Mushfiqur Rahman and Litton Das' inclusion in the batting provides stability, while attacking batters like Towhid Hridoy and Shanto are in the squad to up the ante.

<h2>Absence of Mahmudullah raises questions</h2>

Veteran all-rounder at the lower order, Mahmudullah was expected to get picked for the six-team tournament given his experience, but his absence has now raised a few questions. The right-arm cricketer last played a ODI game against England in March this year and has been away since then, with selectors citing reason as ‘rested’.&nbsp;

Neither did he feature in the Ireland ODIs nor got picked for the Afghanistan series in July. As the BCB had earlier stated, the Asia Cup squad will more likely be the World Cup squad (with one or two changes to the max), it looks unlikely that Mahmudullah will return to contention for the mega event in India.

Tamim Iqbal, who in July, reverted his retirement call, was left out as he continues to recover from the back injury. The left-handed batter is said to be fit for the home New Zealand ODIs and will be on the flight to India for World Cup starting October 5.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, at the Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh will play their first match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on August 31.

Absence of Mahmudullah raises questions Veteran all-rounder at the lower order, Mahmudullah was expected to get picked for the six-team tournament given his experience, but his absence has now raised a few questions. The right-arm cricketer last played a ODI game against England in March this year and has been away since then, with selectors citing reason as ‘rested’. Tamim Iqbal, who in July, reverted his retirement call, was left out as he continues to recover from the back injury. The left-handed batter is said to be fit for the home New Zealand ODIs and will be on the flight to India for World Cup starting October 5. Meanwhile, at the Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh will play their first match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on August 31. Mahmudullah dropped as Bangladesh name 17-man squad for Asia Cup 2023

After guiding India to an impressive seven-wicket win over West Indies in the third T20I, in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), Suryakumar Yadav admitted to his ODI numbers being 'quite poor' as he continues to pile runs consistently in T20Is.&nbsp;"If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it," Surya told reporters after slamming a match-winning 41-ball 83 versus the Windies.&nbsp;

Now, former Indian opener-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra, has opened up on Surya's ODI numbers and cited Rohit Sharma's late bloom in Tests, something which might inspire&nbsp;the former. On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Surya has candidly, honestly and openly accepted that his ODI record is really bad, it is nothing to be ashamed of, there is nothing to hide as well, and he already knows what everyone is saying."

"He also said that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have told him that he has to understand the format a little more. He is not the only one and he is not the first player as well who is taking a little time to shift from one format to the other," he further asserted.

<h2>'Rohit Sharma has fallen in love with Test cricket'</h2>

Chopra then shifted focus to the current Indian captain Rohit and his initial struggles in Tests before his resurgence&nbsp;in late 2019. "If you look at Rohit Sharma when he was playing in the middle-order in the initial phase of his career, you left he was not comfortable with the format. He used to bat well and then play a bad shot. People used to wonder why because everything was going well and then came the bad shot. This was at the start of his Test career. After he began opening, he understood the pulse of the format. Now it feels like Rohit has fallen in love with Test cricket. He needed some time to understand the pulse of the other format," Chopra added.

Prior to becoming the Indian opener in late 2019, Rohit struggled in the red-ball format due to inconsistency and injuries. However, he has turned it around&nbsp;since batting up the order. He has scored seven tons as an opener, with a best of 212, out of his ten centuries overall.&nbsp;

Thus, the former Indian cricketer-turned-expert has suggested Surya take a leaf from Rohit's book and give himself some time in the ODI format in order to understand the pulse of the game and then explode. It is to be noted that the right-hander has only managed&nbsp;511 runs -- with two fifties -- at an average of&nbsp;24.33 in 26 ODIs. It will be interesting to see if he makes the cut in India's Asia Cup squad, and later in the ODI World Cup line-up. He has been exceptional as a T20I batter, averaging over 45, but his ODI numbers need significant improvement.
