Australia skipper Patrick Cummins took his team home in the first Ashes Test by two wickets in another thriller at Edgbaston. The fans across the world couldn't keep calm after Cummins got the winning runs off a misfield and neither could the Aussie players.

Cummins added 55 runs for the ninth wicket with Nathan Lyon as the Aussies held off a mighty English effort led by Ben Stokes' wicket of Man of the Match Usman Khawaja. Have a look at the tweets here:

Ben Stokes sends Edgbaston into frenzy

Australia were looking easy at 209/6 when Ben Stokes decided to bowl for the first time in 2nd innings. The English skipper bowled a superb slow leg-cutter delivery on which Khawaja chopped on and Edgbaston erupted. The Aussie opener, who had scored 141 in the first innings, scored 65 in second as well.

Cummins joined Alex Carey on the crease and the duo added 18 runs before Joe Root held onto a sensational return catch to dismiss Carey. England were all over Australia and almost got Lyon out on a short ball shortly after. Ben Stokes, who made a superhuman effort, couldn't hold on to the catch at mid-wicket as Lyon survived.

The Aussie pair then played each ball according to merit as England kept looking for a breakthrough which never came.

The frantic final hour

The new ball was available to England but they decided not to take it. The move, at first, gave England the wicket of Carey but Cummins then decided to turn on the heat. Needing 51 runs in final 15 overs (maximum possible), Cummins hit Root for two sixes in the first of those overs, bringing down equation to 36.

Lyon was dropped in the very next over as Stokes couldn't latch onto a catch. The Aussie pair then played relatively calmly even as the new ball zipped past their edge on more than a couple of occasions.

An edge off a short Ollie Robinson delivery, which seemed to get Australia one run out of three needed, was pushed to boundary at third man. The Australian supporters, before whom the winning runs were given, erupted in joy and so did the Aussie dressing room after conquering Edgbaston by two wickets.

Ashes 2023: Twitter reacts as Australia beat England in Edgbaston thriller by two wickets

There's a thriller brewing in Edgbaston, 18 years after that jaw-dropping 2005 Ashes Test. Australia are chasing 174 runs for the win on final day in 2023 and England look to take seven wickets before that happens. Aussie openers made a solid start in chase of 281 before Stuart Broad rocked them with two quick wickets. Broad's twin strikes cracked the game wide open for England who were dismissed for 273 in their second innings.

Australia opener David Warner, meanwhile, has said that his team won't go into shell. He's also confident of Australia going long in the game if they are patient enough.

“For us it’s about going out there and playing the way that you play. You can’t go into your shell. The positive thing is the wicket isn’t going up and down as much as you’d think from a deteriorating wicket, probably on the lower side. If we keep being patient and we keep looking to score, we’ll go a long way in this game,” said Warner in a conversation with SEN cricket.

There, however, are chances of rain on day 5 but Warner looks unperturbed by that as he 'can't control that.'

“There’s going to be a bit of weather around but we can’t control that. If it rains and rains heavy, I think it will burn off and that’s what the predictions are," added the Aussie opener.

Speaking on the the affect rain could have on the batting, Warner said, "You’ve got to just keep that out of your mind and play as the ball comes at you, respect each delivery and then look to score.”

Final day equation

England, playing the Bazball way, went hard after Australia in the second innings as well. The hosts, however, kept losing wickets at regular interval and eventually folded out for 273. A seven-run lead in the first innings meant that Australia required 281 for a win.

The visiting openers looked good as they added 61 for the first wicket before Ollie Robinson got Warner (36) out caught behind. Veteran English pacer Broad then got his tail up as he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne (13) and Steve Smith (6) in space of 11 runs.

Night watchman Scott Boland (13 not out), however, stood strong with first innings hero Usman Khawaja (34 not out) to take Australia back without further damage. Australia finished the day with 107 run on board and seven wickets in hand, setting up a exciting final day in Birmingham.

Ashes 2023: David Warner confident of Australia 'going long way' on final day sans rain interruption

England fast bowler Stuart Broad dismissed Aussie David Warner once again in Tests - this time during the ongoing first Ashes Test in Edgbaston. This is the 15th time Broad has dismissed Warner in red-ball cricket, suffice to call the southpaw Broad's bunny.

Australia resumed their innings on day 2 from 14/0 and Broad, in the seventh over of the day, bowled a short and wide delivery outside off stump. Warner, trying to slash it hard, edged the ball and it went on to hit his leg stump. Warner, who scored just 9 off 27 balls, completely loathed himself after getting out while Broad's jubilation knew no bounds. Have a look at the wicket here:

Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad takes two wickets in two balls, dismisses David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne - WATCH

England batters found themselves in a precarious situation on the third day of the opening Ashes Test. Australia secured a seven-run lead on Sunday after they were bowled out for 386. Relentless rain on day three of the Test offered pacers some assistance and Aussie bowlers made full use of the conditions at Edgbaston. The hosts lost their opening batters - Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett - in the final session of the day’s play. When asked about how difficult it was to bat in such challenging conditions, former England skipper Nasser Hussain came up with a hilarious reply on-air. Ex-England batter Kevin Pietersen had asked Hussain, “Horrible time to bat Naz?" Hussain did not wait much before responding, “Absolutely, I'm not worried about Bazball. Nazball is walking out there very slowly at the moment. Making sure I take my guard wrong. Delay as much as possible."

Aussie pacers dominate

Australia skipper Pat Cummins and fast bowler Scott picked up one wicket each to gain an upper hand for their side in the opening Ashes Test. Consistent rain in Birmingham enforced interruptions on the third day of the game. The proceedings had to be stopped right before the final ball of the seventh over during England’s second innings. Action did start again after one hour but only 3.4 overs could be bowled following the resumption.

Ben Duckett was the first to depart in the second innings after skipper Cummins dismissed the southpaw in the ninth over. Cameron Green, standing at gully, took a fabulous catch to send Duckett back to the dressing room for just 19. Crawley was the second batter to be dismissed in the very next over. Ollie Pope and Joe Root remained in the crease at stumps as England currently trail by 35 runs.

Khawaja’s century

Earlier, Australia ended their first innings at 386. Usman Khawaja scored a magnificent century to help his side in earning a valuable first-innings lead. The left-hander displayed resilient batting to achieve his first Test hundred on England soil. He breached the three-digit mark in 199 deliveries. Two English pacers - Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson - scalped three wickets each in the first innings.

The England cricket team are aiming to win their first Ashes series since 2015. A lot has already been said about the Bazball - a new attacking style of playing the game under Ben Stokes and Brendon Brendon McCullum - and only time will tell whether the brand-new method will guide the English cricketers to Ashes glory this time.

England fast bowler Ollie Robinson has defended his actions on giving Australian Usman Khawaja a send off after taking his wicket on day 3 of the Edgbaston Test in Ashes 2023. Khawaja, who top scored for Australia with 141, was yorked out after shimming down the wicket. Robinson said that he 'doesn't care' after appearing to tell Khawaja 'F*** off, you f**king prick.'

After dismissing Khawaja, who had added 34 runs with skipper Pat Cummins for the seventh wicket after Alex Carey's fall, England were all over Kangaroos. Australia could add only 14 runs more after Khawaja's wicket and were all out for 386 in their first innings, handing England a seven-run lead. Stuart Broad and Robinson took three wickets each for England.

Australia ahead at end of day 3

The third day saw rain halting the play before lunch as Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked set to build on the marginal seven-run lead for England. The players returned for a short while before the play was eventually called off. Australia, however, took advantage of overcast conditions in that short passage and sent back both English openers. The hosts currently are at 28/2 and lead by 35 runs.

Ashes 2023: England's Ollie Robinson defends sledging Usman Khawaja on day 3

After seven days of uninterrupted play in the UK in the previous two games – including the WTC Final and now the ongoing first Ashes Test in Edgbaston, the rain finally made its presence felt. Day three between England and Australia ended with the hosts reeling at 28 for two in the second innings, leading by 35 runs.

In Australia’s first innings, the touring side got all out on 386 as Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson picked three wickets each.

Day three started with centurion Usman Khawaja and keeper-batter Alex Carey continuing from where they left the other day and even completed a 100-plus stand for the sixth wicket.

Veteran seamer James Anderson broke the partnership, dismissing Carey clean bowled on 66 off 99 balls. With this, Anderson also picked up his record 1100th first-class wicket.

When it looked like captain Pat Cummins and Khawaja might help Australia take any lead, some clever and tactical captaincy from Ben Stokes resulted in Khawaja’s wicket. Looking strong and set on 141, Khawaja was surrounded by close-in fielders on both sides.

The trick seemed to work as Robinson got the big fish bowled off a Yorker. There was a sense of jubilation on the ground as England knew by picking Australia’s last-recognised batter, the hosts can wrap them under 393.

With English bowlers continuing to follow the plan, they got rid of the tail, including picking Pat on a well-made 33. Broad, who before the start of the third day’s play called this Edgbaston pitch ‘lifeless’ ended with figures of three for 68, while Robinson finished with three for 55.

England had the psychological advantage over the mighty Aussies with a seven-run lead and tried capitalising on it in their second innings.

Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked set from the ball one and were on course of displaying the Bazball brand of cricket that everyone had come to watch for. Their plans, however, were cut short by the passing rain.

Since it broke the momentum, Australia, upon resuming, picked two wickets, with Scott Boland and Cummins removing both openers in two overs.

While Cameron Green lived up to his hype of being an excellent slip-cordon fielder, Boland’s experience counted during Crawley’s dismissal.

England, at that time, was reduced to 28 for two when the rain came down harder, and eventually the day got called off.

Ashes, 1st Test, Day 3: Australia crawl back into the game before rain halts play

Returning England all-rounder Moeen Ali has been fined 25% of his match fees and also handed one demerit point for applying a spray on his bowling hand without notifying the on-field umpires during day two of the ongoing first Ashes Test in Edgbaston.

Returning England all-rounder Moeen Ali has been fined 25% of his match fees and also handed one demerit point for applying a spray on his bowling hand without notifying the on-field umpires during day two of the ongoing first Ashes Test in Edgbaston. The cricket's governing body ICC - in its statement stated Ali admitted the offence and accepted the sanctions levelled by match referee Andy Pycroft. "In reaching his decision to sanction the player, the match referee was satisfied that Ali had used the spray only to dry his hands," the ICC said. Although ICC confirmed Moeen applying a ‘drying agent’ on his hand had nothing to do with ball tampering in any way, which would have been another breach of an ICC clause. ALSO READ: Ashes, 1st Test, Day 2: Usman Khawaja's maiden hundred in England powers Australia to 311/5 "The spray was not used as an artificial substance on the ball, and consequently, it had not changed the condition of the ball, which would have been in breach of clause 41.3 of the ICC playing conditions - Unfair Play - The Match Ball - Changing its Condition." The Ashes winner with England in 2015, Moeen came out of Test retirement on request of captain Ben Stokes and the team management after regular spinner Jack Leach got ruled out of the iconic Ashes 2023 at the last minute. Upon announcing his return and confirming his availability for selection, Moeen got picked straightaway and made little contributions in the first innings. Though with the bat in hand, he tried applying the Bazball approach to his game, Moeen returned with two wickets on day two, picking dangerous Travis Head and Cameron Green off a Jaffa. Moeen, who last played a Test match in 2021, didn’t even appear in any red-ball cricket since, and it’s fair to say, he looked a bit rusty bowling his usual off-spin on this unusual low-bounce surface in Edgbaston. Celebrating his birthday on Sunday, Moeen, who recently won his second IPL title with Chennai Super Kings, will look to get to his best in this ongoing Test. It’s Even-Stevens in Birmingham After England declared on 393 for eight before stumps on day one, it surprised and shocked many pundits and fans across the world. Given the game situation, England should have pounced on this opportunity, but Usman Khawaja’s maiden Test hundred on English soil denied them. As things stand, on day three, Australia has almost closed the gap and looks to put England’s Bazball approach by playing their style of cricket. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Ashes: Returning Moeen Ali fined 25% match fee, handed one demerit point for applying ‘spray’ on bowling hand

Usman Khawaja’s maiden hundred in England powered Australia to 311 for five at stumps on day two of the first Ashes Test in Edgbaston. Fifties from man-in-form Travis Head and Alex Carey and handy contribution from Cameron Green saw Australia dominate the second day after England’s Bazball approach made headlines earlier.

With Australia starting day two on 14 for no loss, England took no time in bringing James Anderson - who is playing his tenth Ashes series, into the attack and share the new Dukes Ball with Stuart Broad. Broad, for the record 15th time in his career dismissed David Warner, bowled on nine. He picked up world number batter Marnus Labuschagne on the next delivery, sending shivers down the Aussie dressing room.

Australia’s best batter in the previous World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith took charge and bailed the team out of trouble. While Smith looked unfazed by Ben Stokes’ unusual tactics – including bringing Harry Brook inside the 15th over, the English captain got the big fish on 16, trapping him in front just ahead of lunch.

Fresh from his maiden WTC Final hundred against India, Head continued from where he left by taking the attack to the opposition. Soon he reached his fifty as Khawaja also looked set in the middle. Moeen Ali, returning to the Test setup after a gap of two wickets, picked Head getting him caught in the mid-wicket area. Two balls later, he outfoxed Cameron Green, only for Jonny Bairstow to miss a clear stumping chance.

Just when Green and Khawaja looked like drifting the game away from England, Ali broke the stand with a ‘Jaffa’, dismissing Green clean bowled on 38.

The rest of day did belong to the left-handed pair of Khawaja, who completed his maiden hundred on the English soil, and Alex Carey, who didn’t give any easy chances to England.

Much like how a few no balls cost Pat Cummins a couple of wickets against India at the Oval, one this time cost England as Broad was denied his third scalp of the day when umpires gave a no-ball after he clean bowled Khawaja. Soon after, Carey also completed his maiden fifty against England in England.

The pair added 91 runs as Australia’s scorecard read 311 for five at stumps on day two.

Ashes, 1st Test, Day 2: Usman Khawaja's maiden hundred in England powers Australia to 311/5

Ricky Ponting was left dumbfounded on day 2 of the 1st Ashes Test being played at Edgbaston when English skipper Ben Stokes handed the ball to Harry Brook as first change. The change came when Broad had taken two wickets in two balls to leave Australia in a bit of a soup in the first session itself. Ponting's fellow commentator Michael Atherton, however, gave an epic reply to Ponting.

"This is Bazball, Ricky," said Atherton. Indeed it was, as was England's shocking declaration on day 1 after amassing 393/8 and Joe Root unbeaten on 118. England were ahead a bit with three wickets at lunch on day 2 which included Marnus Labuschagne, David Warner and Steve Smith. What happened after that was pure Test match batting. As sublime, focused, classy and tiring as it gets. Juxtaposed to Bazball.

Usman Khawaja dropped the anchor from the second session onwards and by the time the day came to an end he was this immoveable object with 126 runs to his name that too unbeaten. Australia finished that day on 311/5, trailing by just 83 runs after Khawaja added 81 runs with Travis Head (50), 72 runs with Cameron Green (38) and 91 unbeaten with Alex Carey (52 not out) for the fourth, fifth and sixth wicket, respectively.

It wasn't like that Khawaja's innings was without the glitch. He was beaten a couple times and was even bowled once after England took the new ball. Stuart Broad, however, had overstepped on the ball which managed to go past Khawaja's resilient defence. His favorite shot during his innings has been the pull, off which he scored 36 runs including eight of his 14 fours.

Having made his debut for Australia in 2011, Khawaja's career is divided in two parts: 2011-19 and from 2022 onwards.

The southpaw had scored 2,887 runs in 44 games at an average of 40.66 in the first part of his career. He had also scored eight hundreds from 2011-19. Australia dropped Khawaja after that before summoning him back in the side in 2022 for the Ashes Down Under.

Ever since making his comeback, Khawaja has not only resurrected his career but how. In 18 games he has played since that career-changing Test against England in Sydney where he scored twin hundreds, the left-hand batsman has scored 1,747 runs.

His 1,747 runs are the most by any batsman since 2022 - the second best being Joe Root with 1,591 runs. Khawaja's average since 2022 has been 69.88 against Root's 56.82. Khawaja has also scored seven hundreds since then with a highest score of 195.

The most important thing about Khawaja's resurgence been his ability to bat in different situations. After making his comeback, the batsman has travelled not much but to India and Pakistan - the countries famous for wreaking a few careers with trail by spin. Khawaja, however, has risen to the occasion - scoring three hundreds there - two in Pakistan and one in India. All in all, Khawaja's four hundreds out of his seven have come out of home - a record itself since 2022.

With three more days and four more Tests to go in the ongoing Ashes, it looks like Khawaja is ready to make full use of his purple patch. If he does that, Australia will definitely have a better chance at countering the Bazball and may be win their first Ashes in England since 2001.

Veteran England star Joe Root was seen in sensational form on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test as he scored his 46th international ton against the Aussies in the first Ashes Test. In their first taste of the Bazball, the Aussies suffered despite a good start with the ball as England posted 393/8 before they declared and invited Pat Cummins’ men to play the final 30 minutes of the day. Despite the attacking form of play, England were unable to breach the defence of David Warner (8) and Usman Khawaja (4) as Australia ended the day at 14/0 at stumps.

Mix start for England

Day 1 started with a four from Zak Crawley as he cleared England’s ambitions which caught everyone by surprise. Crawley though did not get the required support at the other end as Ben Duckett was dismissed for 12 by Josh Hazlewood in the fourth over. Crawley would then put a 70-run stand for the second wicket with Ollie Pope which steered the innings in the right direction before the latter was dismissed for 31. Soon Crawley was scalped by Scott Boland on the final ball of the first session on 61.

Root runs the show

With England at 124/3 at the break, it was Joe Root who took the anchor role despite losing wickets consistently at the end. Harry Brook (32) and skipper Ben Stokes (1) soon followed which put the hosts on the back foot. Jonny Bairstow (78) would then join Root as they both stitched a 121-run stand for the sixth wicket.

However, it was Root who stood firm and reached his 30th Test hundred at Edgbaston and got a standing ovation from the crowd. He now has the second-highest number of international hundreds among active players with 46. Soon after Root’s hundred, England declared at 393/8 and asked the Aussies to bat.

England did their best to breach the defence of Warner and Khawaja but did not succeed in the four overs at the end of Day 1 before stumps. Australia ended the day at 14/0 and still trail by 379 runs in the first innings.

Ashes 2023: ENG vs AUS head-to-head record, squad, schedule, venue and key info

Moeen Ali has come out of Test retirement to replace injured spinner Jack Leach in the Ashes squad after playing last of his 64 Tests in September 2021. The all-rounder, however, has admitted that he wouldn't have done so if Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum were not the captain and coach of the England Test team.

"Probably not, no," said Moeen in response to the question when asked if he would have considered picking up the red ball again, had it not been Stokes who had asked him, reported cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

Ali also revealed that he thought it was a joke when Stokes first asked him to play in the Ashes and he had replied with a 'lol.' Ali, however, wasn't aware of Leach's diagnosis at the time, said the report.

The off-spinning all-rounder also said that England is playing exciting cricket at the time and and he'd have liked the same kind of energy when he was playing.

"Just the fact that it's the Ashes and it's such a big series and the exciting cricket the guys have been playing," Moeen explained. "It's a kind of era I'd have loved when I was playing. It's the Ashes: to be part of it would be amazing.

"When I retired, I was done and that was the end of playing. But the unfortunate injury to Leachy meant I got a message and a call from Stokesy and Baz and Keysy (Rob Key). So let's see what happens," added Ali.

Moeen, however, made it clear that he doesn't look at this comeback as a career and more like a free hit where he's not playing for his spot.

"I don't look at it like a Test career. It is a free hit. I'm not playing for my spot. There's no pressure, really. There is pressure of the occasion and the game, but I spoke to Baz and he said he's not bothered about how I perform, which is quite nice.

"As an individual, I want to do well and contribute to winning games. All the things I ever wanted to do in Test cricket I'm going to try to do in these games. It could be dangerous, it could be not so dangerous. We'll see," said Ali.

The all-rounder also elaborated on how Stokes has told him to be just himself and be on the aggressive side with the ball as well.

"I spoke to Stokesy about how he talked to batters and he just said, 'It would be perfect for you and the way you play'. There's no question marks over any shots you play; that gives me license to play a few more rash shots I guess. Even with the ball, he's more on the aggressive side. I know I'd go for runs but he knows there's also some wicket-taking deliveries in between, which is all he cares about really," mentioned Ali.

Ashes 2023: Moeen Ali reveals who made him come out of Test retirement

The Ashes is all set to begin and it promises to be an entertaining affair, with England's Bazball against World Test Champions Australia. England, after being in the dumps in red-ball cricket for too long, decided to make some concrete changes in leadership and in coaching style. The changes paid off as England went on to shock the world, with Ben Stokes as captain and Brendon McCullum as a coach coming up with a blistering style of play, Bazball, and won nine out of the first 10 matches they played.

Former England captain, Eoin Morgan, while speaking to the news outlet The Mirror, also said that the captaincy of Ben Stokes is going to be the key in the upcoming five-Test Ashes series.

“Good leadership and captaincy can make a real difference to a team and Stokes’ leadership I think is going to be key for this Ashes,” said Morgan.

“He’s always been a leader and as captain he’s been great. I’ve sat back and admired how he’s gone about it. I learned a huge amount from his coach Brendan McCullum and leadership is shaped by the people that have influenced you. They have recognized what strengths their players have and are trying to utilise them. And they've worked.

“He's continued to answer questions where you have to defend it and continue to talk about it, and I can certainly relate to that.

“For the first three years of our transition in white-ball, I kept saying ‘we're doing this because it works and it will continue to work as long as we get better at it," said former England white-ball skipper.

Morgan also appreciated Stokes for trying to make Test cricket as attractive as possible like how India's former skipper Virat Kohli did once.

“Test cricket for me is still unbelievable,” he said. “But it is a really challenging time for it. It has lost Virat Kohli as a Test captain and he always spoke vividly about how much he loved it and was passionate about it.

“Stokes is the same, and he has taken on a huge responsibility to the game to make it as attractive as possible,” added Morgan.

Also Read: 'Be realistic...,' says Ravi Shastri on Rohit's demand of 20 days before WTC Final “He's continued to answer questions where you have to defend it and continue to talk about it, and I can certainly relate to that. Ashes 2023: Former skipper Eoin Morgan reveals 'KEY' for England to win

England and Australia are soon to face off each other in much awaited five-Test Ashes and the build up to the iconic bilateral series has already started. England, after appointing Ben Stokes as captain and Brendon McCullum as coach, have reinvented themselves in red-ball cricket and would be eager to prove the worth of Bazball against the Kangaroos.

England pacer Stuart Broad, meanwhile, has praised his fellow pacer James Anderson to defying age and getting better each day. Broad called Anderson's competitiveness his 'number one strength' on 10-series podcast series Legends of Ashes.

"He's probably the most competitive person I've seen bar Jos Buttler in any sport that he plays. But he's very driven. He's an addict to cricket, to be honest. He's an addict to training, an addict to getting better, improving all the time.

"That's showing now, he's 40 and he's probably bowling better now than he was four years ago. It's an incredible testament to himself and the game," said Broad about Anderson, who has 685 Test wickets to his name.

Speaking on how Bazball has helped him, Broad said that appointment of McCullum and Stokes has definitely helped Anderson. The pacer also spoke about his partnership with Anderson and said that communication is the key between them.

"He's probably grown as much in the past year as anyone, with Baz and Stokesy taking over," Broad added. "How I view our partnership is our job is to figure out conditions in those first 10 overs with the new ball quicker than the opposition batters."

"That's when we make breakthroughs and that comes through communication. It's just a constant, like, information stream that comes our way and there's no doubt that that's taken our partnership to the next level," added Broad.

Ashes 2023: 'He's an addict...:' Stuart Broad praises James Anderson for being competitive

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has decided between Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland for that one place in the bowling lineup for the first Test against England.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has decided between Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland for that one place in the bowling lineup for the first Test against England. Punter, as most fans call him, feels a fully-fit Hazlewood will be in the XI despite Boland’s credentials in this format lately. Although Ponting backed Boland to play some role in the upcoming Ashes, which begins with the first Test in Edgbaston on June 16th, he thinks Hazlewood playing alongside captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc in the opener is a no-brainer. Ahead of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India at the Oval, Hazlewood was ‘very close’ on making his anticipated return to the Test side for the first time since January this year, but a last-minute precautionary pull-out saw Boland playing ahead of him. ALSO READ: Ashes 2023: 'What is their Plan B' - Steve Waugh questions England's backup approach if 'Bazball' fails Following the SCG Test against South Africa earlier, Hazlewood suffered an Achilles injury and remained on the sidelines for few months. In the process, he also missed the away Border-Gavaskar series that India won 2-1. The right-arm seamer returned to playing competitive cricket during IPL 2023 for RCB, featuring in just three matches throughout, however, he had left the tournament early, citing side soreness. "Nothing changes for me," Ponting said., as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "If Hazlewood is fit and they are 100% convinced that he can get through the game, then I think he'll start, but if he doesn't you have a pretty good back-up." Impressive Boland will get his chances Knowing how well Boland played since making his historic Test debut at the MCG against England in December 2021, Ponting is impressed with the domestic veteran and feels with five matches, his time will also come, and he will get a run in the Ashes 2023. "Scotty is very impressive," Ponting said. "The thing the selectors might be thinking about is Josh's injury record over the last few years. When you look at it, with Scotty bowling the way he is, it's a pretty compelling argument to say is he in their starting XI for the first Test. "Looking ahead, though, with five Test matches in six weeks, don't think we can expect either bowling group to get through [fully], both teams will probably have to rest a quick or two here and there through the series." While Australian management expressed displeasure in not having Hazlewood for the one-off crucial tie against India, picking Boland didn’t disappoint them either. The Victorian made his presence felt in the first innings by dismissing India opener Shubman Gill and keeper-batter KS Bharat clean bowled. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Ricky Ponting picks between Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland for Ashes 2023 opener, says 'he will start for me'

We are less than a week from the start of Ashes 2023, and the verbal volleys have already begun. While England veterans, including Stuart Broad, took a sly dig at Australia’s previous Ashes win in 2021 by calling it equivalent to null and void, the former Aussie captain Steve Waugh has questioned England’s approach if the most-talked-about thing is Tests, ‘Bazball’ fails this time.

With Bazball making all the right noises in the past 12 months after Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes took over the reins in the Test side, Waugh feels if England is going in with just option under their sleeves, their chances of being found out increases. England’s newest all-out-attack approach helped them taste success, as they won 11 of the last 13 Tests played. Their latest win over Ireland was one example of that, and Waugh feels though England has taken down several attacks in the process, doing something similar against the potent Australian attack would not be as easy. ALSO READ: WTC Final: Mitchell Starc warns India ahead of potential big total, says 'we will keep batting for now' "That is the big question mark over so-called Bazball. What is Plan B? Have they got a Plan B?" Australia's former Test captain asked, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "If they haven't then they are going to be found out. "They have shown they are good enough to carry this style of cricket off, but the ultimate test will be against a world-class bowling attack, which Australia has got. "It is exciting, but to me, the jury is out at the moment. Does [Bazball] hold up under scrutiny against a really good bowling attack in maybe challenging conditions?” Waugh added. Ponting echoes Waugh’s words Two great Australian captains, Waugh and Ricky Ponting, share the same thought as both believe England might win most matches with that approach, they will still fall short on a few occasions, and chances of that happening against the Aussies are higher. "There is no doubt it won't work all the time, but I think with [coach Brendon] McCullum and [captain Ben] Stokes they will have the courage to go through with it," Waugh said. "They can't chop and change. Have they got a backup plan? I'm not sure. That might find them out." Meanwhile, Ponting said, "I've got a few thoughts on what I'd be doing if I was an Australian fast bowler," Ponting said. "I think the reason the way England have played for the last couple of years is with this series in mind. They've been trying to find a brand of cricket that they can play that's going to win an Ashes series." Since Australia haven’t won an away Ashes since 2001, their chances of turning the tables around when stakes are this high will make the upcoming Ashes 2023 a mouth-watering series to watch out for. The first of the five Tests begins on June 16th in Edgbaston. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Ashes 2023: 'What is their Plan B' - Steve Waugh questions England's backup approach if 'Bazball' fails

England captain Ben Stokes says he wants to be involved in an Ashes series that goes "beyond cricket" as he prepares to face Australia in a five-match series.

The swashbuckling all-rounder has led England to 11 wins from 13 Tests since being appointed captain alongside coach Brendon McCullum last year.

Next week the skipper, who starred in the drawn 2109 Ashes series, will lead his men in the first Test against arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston.

England have achieved their recent striking success playing an aggressive style of cricket dubbed "Bazball" in reference to McCullum's nickname.

Doubts persist over whether such an approach can succeed against Australia but Stokes is determined to produce a memorable series that can be compared with the 1981 and 2005 Ashes contests, which made all-rounders Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff huge stars.

"I've seen what it's like when you get those moments that really ignite an audience and even create something that goes beyond cricket," Stokes wrote in a column for the Players' Tribune.

"Flintoff in 05, Beefy (Botham) in 81 -- magical events that capture the public imagination and show what cricket can be all about.

"Moments that even people who aren't normally into cricket stick on the telly for because it's so exciting and you feel like you're part of something that you may never get to see again."

Stokes, who has won the 50-over World Cup and Twenty20 World Cup, reiterated his desire for the Test side to play without fear, even though he stressed his hatred of defeat.

"Just because I say it's all right to fail, it doesn't mean I'm fine with losing," he said. "I hate losing.

"But there's a bigger picture. You have to understand that the only way you ever succeed is by having that liberty to really give it a proper go."

The global growth of T20 franchise leagues, which offer players the chance to earn huge sums of money in much less time than when on international duty, has left many fans fearing for the future of five-day Test cricket.

Stokes acknowledged the "landscape is changing" but the 32-year-old said he still believed Test cricket remains the ultimate challenge.

"Cricketers have short careers and I know players are going to make decisions about which route they go down based on financial security for them and their families," he said. "It's natural.

"I really want boards across the world to get their heads around this, which they seem to be having a hard time doing.

"Rather than fight against it, we need to embrace it. Yes, we may lose a few talented players along the way, but the best way to keep Test cricket alive and at the pinnacle of the sport is to work harder to show players something that excites them and inspires them."

Ashes: Ben Stokes expects 'beyond cricket' stuff in upcoming series as England get ready for Aussie battle

England all-rounder Moeen Ali has been approached to come out of retirement after Jack Leach being ruled out of the upcoming Ashes series. The off-spinner/batsman had retired from the red-ball cricket at the end of the summer in 2021.

Moeen confirmed being approached by the England management to ESPNCricinfo after Leach was ruled out due to a back stress fracture. Before he quit wearing whites, Ali, 35, had played 67 Tests, scoring 2914 runs and taking 195 wickets.

This is, however, not the first time Ali has been approached to make a comeback in Tests. England coach Brendon McCullum had spoken to the all-rounder last summer as well with Pakistan tour in mind but Ali had turned it down, citing T20 World Cup and another commitments.

Notably, Moeen had retired from the Test cricket in order to perform at his best in the limited-overs cricket. Moeen has definitely stayed true to his words as he helped England win the last T20 World Cup and most recently won an IPL trophy with the Chennai Super Kings.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo while in India playing the IPL, Moeen had said that he is getting back to his best self and that he's getting his rhythm back.

"I actually feel like there's things I've been missing over the last couple of years," he had said. "I've just started to get it back again: a bit of rhythm in my action.

"When I was playing Test matches, I always felt like I was bowling well in white-ball cricket. You can kind of lose that rhythm, I guess. I think I've got to have that mindset of still bowling with that same energy as I would have done in Test matches," Moeen had added.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad is also upbeat about Moeen's potential return to England Test team and said that he would fit easily into Bazball philosophy.

"We know Mo is a phenomenal cricketer and someone who would fit into Stokes and Baz's philosophy beautifully," Broad said to Sky Sports. "I don't know if he's being considered by the selectors or if he would consider red-ball cricket again. But he's a mighty fine cricketer," he added.

England approach 'Test-retired' Moeen Ali to replace Jack Leach in Ashes squad

The Ashes is the oldest and perhaps the greatest rivalry in world cricket. With England hosting the iconic five-match Test series this summer, coach Brendon McCullum looks forward to an exciting contest – more to do with 'Bazball' delivering at the biggest stage. With everyone, including young kids across the globe, eagerly waiting for this Test series to begin, Brendon feels this is the perfect stage to advocate their brand of cricket and entertain and captivate kids. After England thrashed Ireland by 10 wickets inside three days to win the one-off Test, all the focus will now move to the Ashes, which begins with the first Test in Edgbaston on June 16th. Meanwhile, in Test cricket, England has lately made some right noises - all because of adapting and, thus far, perfectly executing a result-oriented super-fast brand of cricket the world now calls ‘Bazball.’ With them winning 11 out of the past 13 Tests since McCullum took over the charge of the Test side last year, England, for the first time in a few years is entering the Ashes as favourites. ALSO READ: Virender Sehwag calls ex-Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq 'best middle-order batter from Asia' Speaking with Sky Sports, McCullum said he is aware of the magnitude of this series and thus wants his team to leave an impact on young kids growing up for the greater good of this format. "You have to be prepared to marry yourself to a position and that for us is freeing guys up to play the style of cricket that gives them the greatest amount of satisfaction and could transfer to results,” McCullum told Sky Sports. "You want to have fun, you want to enjoy yourself, you want to lose yourself and be part of something. You might not achieve it but what a great opportunity. What better stage? "Think of all the kids around the world who are going to be watching over the next two months. All those who have football, rugby, athletics or any other sport that they could choose from - or cricket,” the coach added. Entertainment is the way forward It’s fair to say England’s newest style of play is entertaining, and Brendon feels only by making this format exciting for everyone to watch they can reach more young kids and help it survive in this fast-growing age of T20 cricket. "How do we provide that next shot in the arm to ensure we get people wanting to play Test cricket? You do it by providing the greatest entertainment on the biggest stage while everyone is watching. That's what's in front of us. Bring it on. If it doesn't work, it's okay. We'll get up and go again," McCullum added. Here is the Ashes schedule - First Test (Edgbaston) - June 16 - June 20 Second Test (Lord's) - June 28 - July 2 Third Test (Clean Slate Headingley) - July 6 - July 10 Fourth Test (Emirates Old Trafford) - July 19 - July 23 Fifth Test (The Kia Oval) - July 27 - July 31 WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

'Ashes is the biggest stage, we have to entertain...' - ENG coach Brendon McCullum on sticking with Bazball

England Test captain Ben Stokes has assured fans that there's nothing to worry about regarding his knee and he fully plans to bowl in the upcoming Ashes series against Australia at home. Stokes's left knee has been a topic of discussions as the all-rounder has had to manage it for years and his recent catch in the one-off Test against Ireland put him in a bit of pain.

Speaking on the catch which he took at short fine leg to dismiss Ireland's Curtis Campher, Stokes, at the post-match presentation, said, "I actually didn't pick it (ball) up, and I actually landed quite awkwardly on it (knee). My weight went on the inside of my knee, like I hyper-extended."

The English captain was in discomfort after the catch and didn't bowl in the match, which England won by 10 wickets. He, however, had bowled before the start of play on day 3 and said he was 'happy with where I was.'

"I bowled this morning - the first time I'd bowled since being back from India, so it would have been about four weeks actually," said Stokes. "I got through that and was really happy with where I was. So no, nothing (for England fans) to worry about."

Stokes further elaborated after the match, "I was really happy with how I bowled (before play). I bowled for about 20 minutes and I got through that really well. Obviously I have got time to build up before I push back into flat out, but I just landed quite awkwardly when I took that catch."

While the knee certainly has been a pain point for Stokes, he said that his discomfort after the catch was more of because of age and he twisted it in a strange way.

"I didn't quite see it so had to adjust myself and landed on my left leg and it twisted in a really strange way. It was fine, I just don't know what really happened. It was one of those things - but I am 32 tomorrow so that probably explains it," added the English skipper.

Stokes was also asked whether he'd sit out at any point during the course of the Ashes if he'd not able to bowl to which replied in a firm no.

"No, of course not. That's not even something we've even spoken about because I'm fully prepared to be bowling at Edgbaston," reassured the ace all-rounder. The iconic five-Test series between England and Australia is set to start from June 16.

Also Read: Captain Ben Stokes creates bizarre record as England begin summer with thumping win over Ireland "I bowled this morning - the first time I'd bowled since being back from India, so it would have been about four weeks actually," said Stokes. "I got through that and was really happy with where I was. So no, nothing (for England fans) to worry about." Stokes further elaborated after the match, "I was really happy with how I bowled (before play). I bowled for about 20 minutes and I got through that really well. Obviously I have got time to build up before I push back into flat out, but I just landed quite awkwardly when I took that catch." While the knee certainly has been a pain point for Stokes, he said that his discomfort after the catch was more of because of age and he twisted it in a strange way. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. 'I'm fully prepared,' says England skipper Ben Stokes about bowling in upcoming Ashes

Former England pacer Steve Harmison made headlines following his latest remarks on ex-captains Naseer Hussain and Michael Atherton by calling them selfish characters. Talking on SEN Radio, Harmison, in response to Jason Gillespie’s comments on how England played as a unit in the 2005 Ashes – something, as an Australian he had never seen before, Harmison took jibes at those two stalwarts.

Though for countless reasons, the 2005 Ashes remain the greatest modern-day Test series to date, Harmison said had it not been about playing for them and instead for the country, England would have tasted success earlier as well.

Meanwhile, not only Hussain and Atherton, the two top-order batters, who attained tremendous success in their career, Harmison also mentioned a few names, citing that since they didn't play for the team, England's Test side had to bear the brunt for those results.

Gillespie’s assessment of England’s culture during the early 2000s and how it suddenly changed during the 2005 Ashes stated, “I noticed a big difference in the England side in the 2005 Ashes… we’d never felt that as an Australian side before,” Gillespie told ‘Sen Radio’ on Thursday,

“England would normally go out in dribs or drabs going onto the field… (but this time) it was really noticeable that as soon as the umpires walked out there, (England skipper) Michael Vaughan was straight out there, everyone was straight out there, quick chat and then they would literally run to their fielding positions, the bowler would run and hand his cap to the umpire and before our batters were halfway onto the ground, the whole England team was set up ready to play, ready to rock,” the former Aussie seamer added.

We had a lot of selfish characters playing for England - Steve

Harmison, who played 44 Tests and was a core member of the bowling unit from 2000 to at least until the 2005 Ashes, revealed, “We’d grown up as a team, we played as a team and we behaved off the field like a team (in 2005). In 1997, 2001, 2003/04, you had a lot of selfish characters playing for England.”

Specifically mentioning those names, Harmison said, “Some great cricketers, don’t get me wrong… but when you look at — and I’ve got no problem saying this — the likes of Nasser (Hussain), Athers (Michael Atherton), Thorpey (Graham Thorpe), Corkey (Dominic Cork), Darren Gough, Andy Caddick, there was a group of individuals playing altogether as a team where you look at 2005, we were a team.”

Talking about the Australian team that since the mid-90s took the world by storm, and despite them having differences as well, they never let the opposition get onto them, Harmison told Gillespie,

“Looking at (the Australian team), your boys were a team. You might have had some differences, but we never picked up once (on any of them),” Harmison added.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Ashes are about to begin in the UK, with the first Test scheduled to start on June 16 in Edgbaston.

'They were selfish characters' – England's Steven Harmison makes bold claims about ex-teammates

England Test team captain Ben Stokes is optimistic about his bowling chances as he prepares for a busy English summer where his side takes on Australia in the Ashes. Stokes, who returned at the midway point of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is suffering from a knee issue and is optimistic about his bowling chances. According to Stokes, he has given himself the best possible chance to bowl when England take on Australia in the Ashes, starting on June 16.

Stokes to bowl?

"The knee is in a much better place than it was in Wellington," Stokes told reporters ahead of Ireland Test.

"I've been over in India for the IPL and these last eight or nine weeks I know I have got myself in a position where I can't say I regret anything.

"I have got myself into a place where I feel like in a 2019, 2020 space in terms of my own body and fitness. I have definitely given myself the best opportunity (to bowl this summer).

"We know what it is (the problem) and now it is about managing it,” the all-rounder added.

The 2019 ODI World Cup winner will lead his side against neighbours Ireland in the only Test starting on Thursday at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. He will be determined to start the new season on a high and continue his unbeaten streak as the captain of the Test side. Stokes is yet to lose a series as the captain of England and has formed a brilliant combination with coach Brendon McCullum, termed as ‘Bazball’ by the English media.

Stokes also reflected on his love for Ashes, where he has incredible memories of having led England to a memorable win against the Aussies in 2019 at Headingley. The Ashes ended all square at 2-2 when the Aussies were last in England.

"It is just the history and what the Ashes is. We're lucky enough as English players and Australian players to be the only ones able to play in it.

"It is one of those series that has got unbelievable history and will continue to capture the imagination of the whole world. We all know what the Ashes means."

Ashes 2023: Ben Stokes optimistic on bowling against Aussies, says 'given myself the best opportunity'

England and Australia are set to lock horns in the forthcoming Ashes 2023 edition, which will be held in the United Kingdom. Ahead of the upcoming series, England and Aussie players have already got involved in a war of words. Recently, Stuart Broad commented on the bio-bubble arrangements England had to go through when they toured Australia for Ashes 2021. Broad questioned the hard quarantine in place Down Under and called it a 'void series'. Now, Australian pacer Mitchell Starc has hit back at the Englishman and feels England got away with a lot of leeway while they were in quarantine in Australia.

"Nothing was harsher than the last Ashes series. But in my mind, I don’t class that as a real Ashes," Broad was quoted as saying to the Daily Mail last month. He added, "Nothing about that series was high-level performance because of the Covid restrictions. The training facilities, the travel, not being able to socialise. I’ve written it off as a void series."

England cricket team has been handed a timely boost for the upcoming Ashes 2023 after speedster Ollie Robinson was passed fit for the only Test match against Ireland. England are set to play Ireland at the Lord’s in the only Test starting on June 1 with Robinson now key for them as they prepare for the big showdown against the Aussies. The 29-year-old had suffered an ankle issue after day two of Sussex's County Championship match against Glamorgan at Hove last week.

ECB's statement on Robinson

"Scan results have revealed no damage to his left ankle and that Robinson will join up with the England men's Test squad this weekend ahead of the Test match against Ireland starting on Thursday, June 1 at Lord's,” an ECB statement read.

The scan reports showed no big issues for the speedster as he will be an important part of the England side as they bid to win the Ashes for the first time since 2015. Robinson left the field with a sore left ankle and appeared on the final day wearing a protective boot and hobbling about on crutches.

It is worth reminding that, record wicket-taker James Anderson is nursing a minor strain he picked up during the County Championship match while playing for Lancashire. Ben Stokes is also carrying a knee injury and might not be available to play as an all-rounder. Stokes returned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) to recover from the issue that has been troubling him for a while.

Jofra Archer however has been ruled out from the first two matches of the Ashes with a hamstring injury. He is targeting a return to the squad for the remaining three Ashes matches.

Ashes 2023: Ollie Robinson fit to face Ireland before crunch Australia showdown in June

Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen thinks that fast bowler Jofra Archer's journey with England cricket has come to an end. The comments from Pietersen came after Archer was ruled out the entire upcoming English summer including the much-anticipated Ashes series against Australia at home.

Writing on his blog Betaway, Pietersen opined, "I'm gutted for Jofra. Absolutely gutted. I think this will probably end his journey with English cricket. I know that there are reports around a franchise contract, and that would be the smartest thing for him to do now. Take six months to recover, select a few tournaments to play, and bowl at the speed of light for a few months of the year. He would earn good money and still have a career in the game."

The former skipper also suggested that the England Cricket Board is also probably done with him. Pietersen, however, sympathised with the fast bowler and said that it's not Archer's fault as he's just injury prone.

As much as he would love to play for England, because I know that's his dream, it's probably finished. He should now just go and cash in as much as he can in franchise cricket. But first of all, get himself fit," wrote Pietersen.

Notably, Archer returned to competitive cricket with Indian Premier League (IPL) where he plays for Mumbai Indians but couldn't live up to the expectations. The fast bowler has played in just five games and took wickets only at an average of 95 and an average of 60.

The last decent season of Archer in IPL was in 2020 when he played 14 games and took 20 wickets. Notably, 2020 was also the last time Archer played in the IPL before featuring in the current season.

Archer was part of IPL 2023 before being out of the tournament very recently due to injury concerns.

On Archer's unavailability, Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, said, as ECB announced a strong 15-member squad for the one-off Ireland Test, "We wish him the best of luck with his recovery. I’m sure we'll see Jofra back to his best and winning games for England."

England Men's Test Squad for Ireland Test at Lord's:

Ben Stokes (Durham) Captain
James Anderson (Lancashire)
Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)

Ashes 2023: Jofra Archer ruled out of entire English summer with recurrence of stress fracture

Australian Test vice-captain Steve Smith has hit back at veteran England pacer Stuart Broad after the latter’s comment on the 2021 Ashes where they lost 0-4. Broad, who had earlier described the 2021 Ashes as ‘void’ and had seen his team on the receiving end of a capitulating defeat, is looking forward to making an impression in the upcoming Ashes which begins in Edgbaston in June. Smith, on the flip side, has also started his preparations for the Ashes, having already landed in England.

"I mean, it was a little odd," Steve Smith said.

Smith was seen in excellent touch during his last Ashes visit to England and was one of the star performers of the side. Broad on the flip side did not have a positive tour Down Under in 2021-22 and scalped only 13 wickets, the most by any English bowler. Smith though was not happy with Broad’s comment and looked animated before the start of the Ashes.

"We were all there and playing so it was a little bit odd, you know? He's a nice guy and loves throwing out some good banter so it's all part of it.

"It certainly wasn't an ideal scenario. But the whole world was going through it and we were in the middle of a pandemic, so we couldn't really complain too much.

"We were actually out there being able to do what we love, so I don't really have much more to add to it," Smith said.

The former Australia skipper scored a staggering 744 runs in the Ashes in 2019 and helped his side regain the Ashes after it ended in a stalemate. He only managed to score 244 runs in the previous edition but had happy memories of having led his team to one win in the absence of Pat Cummins.

The latest chapter of the rivalry will kick start on June 19 in Edgbaston England look to regain the Ashes for the first time in eight years. Ben Stokes’ men haven’t tasted a win in the historic series since 2015 but will look to continue their impressive run in the last 12 months.

Ashes 2023: Steve Smith takes a jibe at Stuart Broad's claim of 'void series' after 4-0 humiliation Down Under

England pacer Stuart Broad recently stated that he does not feel Australia's 4-0 victory over England was a real Ashes victory, arguing Covid-19 restrictions made it void. During the 2021-22 edition, held in Australia, the Pat Cummins-led home side thrashed Joe Root's England 4-0 and reclaimed the urn Down Under. However, the 36-year-old speedster believes that the definition of Ashes cricket was lost during the previous edition.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Broad said, "Nothing was harsher than the last Ashes series," Broad told the Daily Mail. "But in my mind, I don't class that as a real Ashes. The definition of Ashes cricket is an elite sport with lots of passion and players at the top of their game. Nothing about that series was high-level performance because of the Covid restrictions. The training facilities, the travel, not being able to socialise. I've written it off as a void series."

This isn't the first time when an English player from the 2021-22 tour complained about the conditions and overall arrangements in Australia owing to the Covid rules and regulations. The tour was marred with several controversies as some English players had warned that they would withdraw if their families are not given an exemption from entering the country.

Further, English players were left frustrated with wet weather spoiling their preparations whereas the quarantine conditions also didn't please the visiting side.

Talking about the upcoming Ashes edition, in England, Broad challenged the Aussies if they can match them in their bazball approach. The 2023 edition kicks off in the English summer in June. Before the much-awaited series' commencement, Broad stated, "It would be great for us if Australia try to take us on at our own game," Broad said. "If we can get them playing in a slightly different style they could make mistakes and that would be brilliant for us."

The veteran pacer added, "Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja are all guys who like to bat time and accumulate. So if we can nibble away at them and just get them thinking, 'Why are we not scoring quicker? Why are we not moving the game forward?' I'd love Smith to dance down the track and sky one to mid-off early doors. That would be classic."

Don't class 2021-22 edition as real Ashes, have written it off as a void series: Stuart Broad

Veteran England star Stuart Broad has fired a stern warning to Australia as England prepare for a busy summer that will see them host Australia in the Ashes. Broad playing at Lord’s against Middelsex in the County Championship for Nottinghamshire scalped four wickets and was seen at his fluent best. The early signs are positive for the star bowler which saw him scalp four wickets for 58 runs and start his preparations for the Ashes in the summer.

Middlesex who play at the iconic Lord’s has seen the pitch curator prepare a pitch much more suitable for batting. It is suggested that the pitches are more suitable for Aussie batters in the County Championship where Broad has come up with his own trick to handle the situations.

"It's designed, to be honest, for Marnus [Labuschagne] and [Steve] Smith," Broad said.

Broad, 36, who was playing at the venue for the 29th time saw him bring a new variation that saw him bring the outside edge more into play. Broad also brought the stock delivery into play that could be a vital tool when England take on the Aussies in the five-match Test series.

"It's the reason I wanted to change something, to try and bring their outside edge in more.

"My stock delivery will always be wobble seam trying to nip back on off stump because I think that's the most dangerous ball. But to those guys, I think dragging them across with an away swing is important. So this action tweak is pretty much designed at those two, and it was good to see it really swinging away today,” Broad added.

England will have a busy summer which will see them play six Test matches, with two of those set to be played at Lord’s. Ben Stokes will lead England against Ireland in the solitary Test on June 1 while they will also take on Australia in the Ashes. The first Ashes Test will be played at Edgbaston from June 19 as they try to regain the Ashes for the first time since 2015.

Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad fires early warning for Aussies in busy summer with stellar show at Lord's

Under-pressure David Warner was Wednesday spared the axe and included in Australia's squad for the first two Ashes Tests and the World Test Championship final, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh earned a recall.

Veteran opener Warner is fighting to save his career after a lean run with the bat that had some questioning whether his time was over.

But the 36-year-old will head to England as part of a 17-man squad that also includes Josh Inglis as cover for wicketkeeper Alex Carey, and Marcus Harris and Matthew Renshaw as back-up batters.

There was no room for batsman Peter Handscomb, who featured on the recent Test tour of India and is currently playing county cricket in England.

Spinners Ashton Agar, Mitchell Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann, who also went to India, were similarly overlooked with Todd Murphy getting the nod as second spinner to Nathan Lyon.

Big-hitting Marsh, who has long battled injuries, returns as a likely replacement for Cameron Green should he pick up an injury.

"The UK is a very different assignment from our most recent tour of India and some of the changes are based upon the conditions we are anticipating," said chairman of selectors George Bailey.

"Marcus, Josh and Mitch return to the squad and provide valuable depth and flexibility within their respective skillsets."

Australia play India at The Oval in the World Test Championship final from June 7 followed by five Ashes Tests at Edgbaston, Lord's, Headingley, Old Trafford and The Oval.

Bailey said selectors would evaluate the makeup of the squad following the first three matches.

"We see value in revisiting the squad following the second Ashes Test given the short turnaround between the WTC final and the first Ashes Test, along with the length of the tour," he said.

David Warner makes cut, Mitchell March recalled for Australia's Ashes squad

Former Australia captain and commentator Mark Taylor has backed David Warner for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against India in June while he struggled for the national side recently. Warner has been on the backlash of fans and former cricketers after failing to make a mark in the India tour and home series against South Africa. Taylor also urged the Australia selectors to play Warner in the first two Ashes Tests while keeping Cameron Bancroft or Matt Renshaw as the backup openers.

"If I am reading the tea leaves right, it sounds like they will stick with David for the World Test Championship at The Oval," the former Test captain told AAP.

Taylor, who succeeded World Cup winner Alan Border in 1994, thinks Warner still has enough in the tank to lead Australia to WTC glory.

"And if that's the way Australia are thinking about the World Test Championship, then yes, they have to start with him for the Ashes.

According to the former skipper, seeing Usman Khawaja and Warner open would be a hard perspective when they take on India at the Oval in June. He has backed the team to keep faith in the same openers for the WTC final as well as the first three Ashes Tests.

"It would be very hard to have Usman Khawaja and Warner open the batting and then change a week later for the first Test at Edgbaston. Whoever they think is our best opening combination for the World Test Championship, should do the first three Tests of the summer."

Speaking on potential successors to Warner if he fails, Taylor has recommended Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw as the potential headline makers. Bancroft has not played a Test match since the 2019 Ashes, but was the leading run-scorer in this summer's Sheffield Shield with 945 at an average of 59.06, while Renshaw played for the Aussies in the India series.

"My old way of thinking, I always like a right-and-left-hander combination. So I would love to see Cameron Bancroft get another opportunity at the top of the order," he said. "I see Renshaw has been making runs in New Zealand [for Australia A], but Bancroft has made a heap of runs in the Australian summer.
