Ashes 2023: Australian players 'abused' in members area at Lord's during lunch after Bairstow's run-out

England found themselves in hot waters after Pat Cummins’ two wickets in one over reduced them to 45 for four at one stage on Saturday. However, a 69-run stand between opener Ben Duckett and captain Ben Stokes somehow saved the side's ship and kept them in the chase of 371. With the hosts now needing 257 runs to win the Test and make the score-line even, former batter Marcus Trescothick threw his weight behind the pair, saying that with Stokes around, the target is chasable.

Even in the absence of star spinner Nathan Lyon, who made headlines for showing courage to come onto bat after the fall of the ninth wicket despite suffering a calf tear, Australian bowlers have put on a complete show in the second innings so far.

As the fifth day awaits at the Lord’s, Trescothick feels if both players can put up a partnership early on, they can keep England in the hunt and challenge the Aussies. The Ashes hero, Marcus, added with Bairstow to follow and some of the bowlers, including Stuart Broad, who can also bat, England need not worry much.

"I think there's always hope with Ben there, two Bens there, Jonny coming in, and the bowlers," Trescothick told the BBC.

"If someone can get a big score, we can challenge them and try and overcome it. We're still fairly upbeat, we're a positive unit. We have good days and bad days. You enjoy it on a good day, but you don't get too down on a bad day. You take the rough with the smooth,” he added.

With only six wickets remaining and all of their premier seamers in top form following day four spells, Australia have their nose in front.

Ashes - 'There's always hope when Ben Stokes is there': Trescothick on England's chances of winning at Lord's

Nathan Lyon showed heart and courage when he walked out to bat after the fall of the ninth Australian wicket in the second innings on Saturday despite presumably being ruled out (for bowling) of the Lord's Test due to a calf tear earlier. While the crowd was on its feet to appreciate Lyon for doing what he did, former England captain Kevin Pietersen, sitting in the commentary box, made a statement that didn’t sit well with most cricket fans and Lyon too.

Batting with one leg, playing some shots too, and even taking a single, Lyon had a tough time in the middle, but Pietersen opined if the Australia bowling great has done all of this with the possibility of his team getting a concussion substitute to replace him if he were to get hit amid England's relentless short-ball barrage.

Pietersen said, "Imagine if he [Lyon] had been hit on the head and got a concussion, he'd have got a like-for-like replacement and a world-class spinner [Todd Murphy], based on how he performed in India, it gives food for thought.”

Replying to KP, Lyon sounded disappointed, saying he already had lost a mate, a friend in Philip Hughes, to injury in the past, and in that context or otherwise, this was a poor comment to make.

"Test cricket's been around a lot longer than I have, and injuries are part of the game.

"I have heard comments that I only went out there to get hit in the head, but I'm really against that. I have lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head, so I think that's a really poor conversation being had, if I'm honest with you,” Lyon replied to KP’s comments during the presser after the fourth day’s play.

‘I will do anything for the team’

Everyone appreciated Lyon for taking the risk and coming onto the bat, knowing he cannot walk properly, let alone run and is not considered the best striker of the ball. Against all odds, he still managed a 15-run stand for the final wicket with Mitchell Starc and said he is ready to do anything for the team, and given a chance again, he will go for it.

"I knew the risks," he said. "But the way I look at it... I'll do anything for this team. You never know how big a 15-run partnership can be in an Ashes series. I'm proud of myself for going out there and doing that. I'll do it again and again and again. I love this team. I love playing cricket for Australia. And if I can keep playing my role and help out my teammates, I'll do that," Lyon added.

Meanwhile, Australia stand tall as things stand. With England needing 257 more runs with only six wickets left, the visitors have a real chance of sealing the second Test and taking a 2-0 lead in the series.

Ashes: 'Brave' Nathan Lyon tears into Kevin Pietersen for his 'concussion advantage' remark

England remains in tight space after day three in the ongoing second Test at Lord’s; however, former captain Eoin Morgan feels only Bazball can help them escape Australia's grip in this Test. With the touring team leading by 221 runs with eight wickets remaining in their second innings, Morgan feels going ahead with the ultra-attacking approach is the only way the hosts can win the match and even the scoreline in Ashes 2023.

Though several pundits from both sides have come down hard on England for playing ‘entertaining’ cricket and not worrying about results, Morgan feels the way this team has grown over time by playing the same style that now gets criticised, must continue with that and believe in themselves.

"I think England will stick with their method. It has been so successful for them in such a short space of time, and we have watched the growth of players that had not been successful under previous leadership,” Morgan was quoted as saying on Sky Cricket.

Since Australia have its nose in front as things stand, Morgan is not ruling England out, saying they can still make a comeback in this game, given they continue with the approach that brought them tremendous success over the past 12 months.

"You have to continue with that method, particularly in testing times. The last thing an England player in the dressing room wants to see is playing Australia at their own game Australia are the best in the world at that. England will only beat Australia playing England's game," Morgan added.

Injury scares keep England on toes

Worrying signs regarding injuries have made headlines in this Test, with Nathan Lyon from the Australia camp and Ollie Pope from England both likely to spend more time on sidelines than on the field. While Lyon is ruled out of the Test, shoulder injury to Pope on day three in Lord’s raises doubts over his participation while chasing.

Though spin-bowling coach Jeetan Patel has claimed Pope will bat at his regular number three during the chase.

Meanwhile, after England managed to weather the ‘bouncer-tactic’ storm on day two, they fell prey to the plan as they lost six wickets in less than hundred innings, giving Australia a 91-run lead.

Australian openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja made most of the batting conditions, adding 63 for the first-wicket stand. Though Warner and Marnus Labuschagne (30 off 51) are back in the hut, first match hero Khawaja is unbeaten on 58 from 123 balls, with Steve Smith at the other end.

The match officials denying England to bring on a substitute fielder for injured Ollie Pope and, instead, forcing the number 3 batter to remain on the field on day three of Lord's Test despite him suffering a shoulder injury has angered the English camp.

Speaking to the media after the day’s play, England spin-bowling coach Jeetan Patel, like many others, was unsure of what happened in that situation and said the team is yet to receive an official word from the umpires.

On day one of the ongoing Test, Pope suffered a shoulder injury while fielding but came out to bat at his regular position in the first innings, scoring 42 from 63 balls. During the 18th over in Australia’s second innings, Pope reaggravated the injury and was expected to leave the field.

However, that didn’t happen, as the umpires forced the right-handed batter to the field, else England was offered to play with 10 players only on field, a decision that didn’t sit well with the host camp.

Although the umpires termed his initial injury external, they labelled Pope’s recent injury as the fresh one, and he will be able to bat at number 3 if he’s fit.

"We're a bit bewildered by it all," Jeetan Patel said. "It's a bit confusing. We assumed that he was asked that he had to be back out on the field or we would have to field with 10 men. And that made no sense to us."

"It's a pretty tough situation when you nearly bust your shoulder, and you're told it was an external [injury]. It was always going to happen. He's so committed to this team. He was always going to fall on something. And now he's back off."

"It's a bit messy if I'm being honest with you. We're probably as frustrated as everyone else that was out there that saw what happened, and he's probably more angry at the situation than anything else,” he added.

Pope will bat at 3, ensures Patel

With Australia in the driver’s seat as things stand, unless England trigger a collapse early on day four, they would be up for a huge target in the fourth innings. Patel, on Pope, said the right-hander would bat at his same position and being a responsible batter and a vice-captain, Pope will also help the other batters settle down.

"He is sore, but he should be okay," Patel said. "He's never going to turn down an opportunity to bat for England, and with an opportunity to win a game, I can't see Ollie Pope saying no to that. He's grown since he's come into the team, with the responsibility of being vice-captain, but also the support of the other batters around him. I think he'll see it as an opportunity to take this game on."

ALSO READ: WATCH: Shaheen Afridi enters record books with 4 wickets in 1st over during Vitality T20 Blast Although the umpires termed his initial injury external, they labelled Pope’s recent injury as the fresh one, and he will be able to bat at number 3 if he’s fit. "We're a bit bewildered by it all," Jeetan Patel said. "It's a bit confusing. We assumed that he was asked that he had to be back out on the field or we would have to field with 10 men. And that made no sense to us." "It's a pretty tough situation when you nearly bust your shoulder, and you're told it was an external [injury]. It was always going to happen. He's so committed to this team. He was always going to fall on something. And now he's back off." "It's a bit messy if I'm being honest with you. We're probably as frustrated as everyone else that was out there that saw what happened, and he's probably more angry at the situation than anything else,” he added. Pope will bat at 3, ensures Patel With Australia in the driver’s seat as things stand, unless England trigger a collapse early on day four, they would be up for a huge target in the fourth innings. I think he'll see it as an opportunity to take this game on." WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Ashes 2023: Officials asking Ollie Pope to field despite shoulder injury leave everyone 'angry & bewildered'

England are "about breaking records", assistant coach Jeetan Patel said on Friday as the home team contemplate a huge run chase against Australia in the second Ashes Test at the Lord's.

Ben Stokes's side, who lost the first game of the five-match series last week, collapsed to 325 all out on Friday's third morning in London, playing a series of rash shots.

Australia then reached 130-2 in their second innings to extend their lead to 221 runs despite some accurate bowling from the hosts.

Patel, England's spin-bowling coach, was asked what would be a realistic target to chase for a side who have attacked relentlessly over the past year.

"We've seen some amazing things from this team," he said. "It's going to be a different ask against a different attack but we've seen some crazy things from this line-up in the last year."

"This team is about breaking records, they want to set new standards. They want to sell out grounds and the way to do that is firstly to bowl them out and set the crowd alight and then chase whatever it is down."

England will take heart from a succession of improbable run chases under skipper Stokes, including their astonishing pursuit of 378 to beat India last year -- the highest successful chase in their history.

"We've always said that we want to play an aggressive brand," said Patel. "It's not always going to come off and that's not a cop out. It's just reality."

"They were pretty accurate with how they went about their plan."

"We want to keep changing momentum," he added. "We want to force swings in the game that come back our way a bit like you would see in white-ball cricket."

Patel said the second Test was finely poised, even though Ashes-holders and world Test champions Australia appear to be clear favourites.

"The first session tomorrow (Saturday) is huge for both teams," he added.

"If we can turn some of the skill that we showed tonight, tomorrow morning... we can bowl them out and give us a day and a half to chase something down."

Australia paceman Mitchell Starc, who took 3-88 in England's first innings, said the tourists had been successful with their tactic of bowling short.

"The four of us (fast bowlers) went about our business there being quite accurate and being up around the chest and shoulders," he said.

"I don't like to face that stuff so if it's coming at a decent pace I'm not sure anybody does."

"They (England) are playing aggressive cricket. Their approach is their approach. We saw an opportunity there to create some chances, which we did."

"It doesn't always go that way and thankfully more went to hand than to ground."

England's cricket team 'about breaking records, setting new standards,' says bullish coach

England suffered a horrible collapse in the first session of Day 3 of the second Ashes Test as they lost six wickets in a span of 46 runs. The titanic collapse saw England hand Australia a 91-run lead at the start of the second innings which now sees the host on the back foot. Former England cricketer Michael Atherton then took a big dig at his team, suggesting his former side is not in control of the situation. England were bowled out for 325, having started the day at 268/4 with Ben Stokes falling on the first delivery of the first session.

Ashes 2023: Michael Atherton takes big dig at England's misfiring Bazball approach after Day 3 collapse

England bounced back in style on Day 2 of the second Ashes Test at the iconic Lord's cricket ground, London on Thursday (June 29). However, the day didn't end as well as it could have for England since they were 188 for 1 at one stage, before losing the plot in a jiffy. Australia resumed the day at 339 for 5 as English bowlers dismissed them for 416 and the home side ended the day's proceedings at 278 for 4 after Ben Duckett's 98.

Pat Cummins & Co. resorted to short-ball tactics to get three late wickets on Day 2, dismissing Duckett, Ollie Pope and Joe Root to remain in the contest. Seeing England succumb to Aussies' short-ball ploy, former England captain Michael Vaughan slammed their much-talked-about Bazball approach as they wasted an opportunity to end the day on a high.

'Can't mix entertainment with stupidity'

"I think we've got to be realistic though, we can't mix entertainment with stupidity. Now, for the first 182 runs, I saw an England side that went out to bat and played with great entertainment because they played proper cricket strokes. They played the Australian bowlers, the quicks, with great balance, great scoring options on the front foot, the back foot," Vaughan said while speaking to BBC Sport's Ashes Daily

There was no seam movement, so he decides to go to the short stuff and what came after that for the next hour was absolute stupidity."

'Can't mix entertainment with stupidity': Vaughan slams Eng batters for falling to Australia's short-ball ploy

After an ordinary opening day, England bounced back in style on Day 2 of the Lord's Test versus Australia. Australia commenced the second day's play at 339 for 5 and soon got wrapped up for 416 with Steve Smith top-scoring with a fine 110. England started on a strong note and ended the day's play at 278 for 4, scoring at 4.56 per over, with opener Ben Duckett (98) leading the charge though he was unlucky to miss his century.

At 188/1, England were looking to end the day strongly but lost three wickets by the end of proceedings on Thursday (June 29) but will be satisfied with their comeback. After Day 2, former England captain Andrew Strauss opined on England's fightback. He feels the home side are now in a 'very strong position' but 'not ahead of the game'.

“It was all Australia yesterday and all England today. England are now in a very strong position, they are not ahead of the game but they have certainly come roaring back. Australia were sloppy, lacked a bit of discipline with their no-balls, and England got the balance right. They attacked but without too much risk. I thought it was an excellent day for them," said Strauss.

Australia didn't start well with the ball after missing out on a golden chance to post anything over 500 early in the day. They were sloppy on the field and bowled a lot of no-balls. Cameron Green got rid of Joe Root but had overstepped to give him a lifeline before the former England skipper departed for 10.

Australia's biggest worry will be Nathan Lyon's fitness as the veteran off-spinner, playing his 100th consecutive Test, got injured while fielding and limped off the field. Ashes 2023: 'Hosts not ahead but...': Former England captain opines on Day 2's proceedings at Lord's

Bazball was over the place before the Ashes 2023 started; however, after Australia played seven good days of cricket in this series, the English pundits, former players and even fans began questioning the same tactics. While experts have urged the English team to put aside the spectacle style of play and go for the win, ex-captain and Ashes hero, Kevin Pietersen slammed the ‘good vibe’ between both teams so far.

Following the start on day one of the ongoing Lord’s Test, Stuart Broad and David Warner were seen chatting - something that irked Pietersen, who wants to see a fierce contest and not a friendly tie between both teams. Speaking on Sky Sports earlier also, Pietersen came down hard on England’s tactics that saw Australia pile up 300 plus at stumps on day one; and then after the day's play, he tweeted this,

‘Come on, @englandcricket ! Stand tall today and take it to the Australians. Stop being so nice and get some mongrel in you! Take those 5 wickets quick and bat well!

This is The Ashes and not an exhibition game! 👊🏽

Replying to him, Pietersen’s former teammate and fast bowler, Steve Harmison, disagreed with his rant and said there is a time and place for everything, but because Kevin gets paid to express his opinion, so be it.

ALSO READ: Ashes 2023: 'Nathan Lyon's injury doesn't look good, it's a big loss for us,' says Steve Smith

Given the not-so-rich history between Pietersen and some of his ex-teammates - especially regarding dressing room relationships, Harmison felt Kevin’s remarks might not be well-received by the English dressing room. Though Harmison justified England’s gameplay so far, saying the hosts had just gone through a few bad days in Tests for one year and should not be judged so quickly on that.

“I don’t think it was justified,” Harmison said interview with talkSPORT. “I think this team has had one or two bad days in 12-13 months. I think some of the stuff that they were having a go at them (for), too matey, I think there’s a time and a place.”

“But they’re in the mainstream media, they’re paid to give their opinion, and I’m not going to knock Kevin for having his opinion – he’s always had it," Harmison added.

Harmison cites past examples

Harmison even went on to say Pietersen was always forceful with his opinions, and even back then, those were not well received by the ones in the dressing room. However, he mentioned he was one of those who could give KP a shut-up call.

“He was always forceful with it, it wasn’t always warranted, it wasn’t always best received! Speaking on Sky Sports earlier also, Pietersen came down hard on England’s tactics that saw Australia pile up 300 plus at stumps on day one; and then after the day's play, he tweeted this, ‘Come on, @englandcricket ! Stand tall today and take it to the Australians. Stop being so nice and get some mongrel in you! Take those 5 wickets quick and bat well! This is The Ashes and not an exhibition game! 👊🏽 Come on, @englandcricket ! Stand tall today and take it to the Australians. Stop being so nice and get some mongrel in you! Take those 5 wickets quick and bat well! This is The Ashes and not an exhibition game! 👊🏽 — Kevin Pietersen🦏 (@KP24) June 29, 2023 × Replying to him, Pietersen’s former teammate and fast bowler, Steve Harmison, disagreed with his rant and said there is a time and place for everything, but because Kevin gets paid to express his opinion, so be it. ALSO READ: Ashes 2023: 'Nathan Lyon's injury doesn't look good, it's a big loss for us,' says Steve Smith Given the not-so-rich history between Pietersen and some of his ex-teammates - especially regarding dressing room relationships, Harmison felt Kevin’s remarks might not be well-received by the English dressing room. I think some of the stuff that they were having a go at them (for), too matey, I think there’s a time and a place.” “But they’re in the mainstream media, they’re paid to give their opinion, and I’m not going to knock Kevin for having his opinion – he’s always had it," Harmison added. Harmison cites past examples Harmison even went on to say Pietersen was always forceful with his opinions, and even back then, those were not well received by the ones in the dressing room. However, he mentioned he was one of those who could give KP a shut-up call. “He was always forceful with it, it wasn’t always warranted, it wasn’t always best received! I’m sure it wasn’t best received in the England dressing room (ahead of day two), it certainly wasn’t best received by the England dressing room when we were in it!" Harmison took a dig at Pietersen. “But a few of us could say to Kevin, in no uncertain terms, to shut up. But he’s getting paid to give his opinion,” Harmison added. Ashes 2023: Former English players argue over 'tactics' as Bazball bites back following Australia's domination

Australia dealt with an injury blow on day two of the ongoing second Ashes Test at Lord’s, as spinner Nathan Lyon suffered a suspected calf injury and was helped off the field, taking no further part in the game. While official word on the nature of his injury is yet to be out, batting legend Steve Smith said it doesn’t look good and that his absence will hurt Australia in this Test.

It was after tea on day two when Lyon, while attempting to take a catch at fine leg, got injured. Playing his 100th consecutive Test – being the first bowler in Test history to achieve this feat, Lyon is feared to be out of action for an extended period.

Smith, who scored a brilliant hundred in the first innings – his 32nd overall in this format, shared some insights on what’s happening with Lyon.

After the day’s play, Smith told the media, "I haven't been up in the sheds yet, but obviously it didn't look good. It doesn't look ideal for the rest of the game," Steve Smith told reporters at the end of the day's play. "I'm not sure how he actually is. But obviously, if he's no good, it's a big loss for us.

"He's in his 100th consecutive Test match, which I know he was really looking forward to taking part in and having a role in as well. Fingers crossed he's OK, but it didn't look good," Smith added.

Australia went for plan B right after Nathan Lyon left the field – opting to go short for Harry Brook and Ben Stokes. The ploy seemed to work a bit as a couple of chances were created, but it remains to be seen, for how long Australia sticks to this.

In his absence, Pat Cummins even went for Travis Head and Smith as part-time options, but it was the pace battery that bowled the majority of over during the fag end.

Meanwhile, England batter Ben Duckett, who fell two shy of his maiden Ashes hundred at Lord’s, also sounded worried for Lyon. He said knowing what he brings to the table, Lyon would have been useful on this track in the fourth innings.

"It's a huge shame, and I really hope it's not too bad for him. You never want to see anyone go down with an injury. We all wish him the best," said Ben Duckett. "He was going to play a massive part in that fourth innings, he's such a good bowler. It will be interesting to see how they go about it.

"If they keep going bumpers with all four bowlers, I think they'll be quite tired by the end of it, especially with back-to-back Tests. Travis bowled all right tonight, so maybe he will bowl a bit," Duckett added.

Veteran batter David Warner is finally among the runs in England at the Ashes series. The left-hander struggled big time against seaming deliveries, especially against Stuart Broad in 2019, but following a handy knock of 66 off 88 balls on day one of the Lord’s Test, Warner feels he is in a good space. The experienced campaigner claimed to have battled through pain during the first session of the second Test.

Australia sit comfortably after day one's play, with the visitors on 339 for five. Following a mediocre outing in the first Test in Edgbaston, Warner returned to playing positively in this game, even surprising Broad with a paddle sweep off his delivery early inside the first hour.

However, even before the game started, Warner suffered a few blows to his hands during the throwdowns and once while batting in the nets. Earlier, during the India Test in Delhi in February, he got a knock to his hand off Mohammed Shami's rising bouncer that ruled him out of the remainder of the India tour.

Although he didn’t show any pain while batting, Warner, during the presser, admitted the soreness in his hand, especially in his palm, was there and that he will examine it after this Test. He also revealed he had his hand covered in an ice bucket throughout the afternoon following his dismissal.

"It's copped a battering the last two games, and in the nets, so it's a little bit sore at the moment, a bit of a bruise but I'll just see how we go after the game, and I think we'll examine it then," Warner said. "At the moment it's quite tender.

"[I was] never in doubt, [but] it was quite sore. Initially, it was more in the palm, I've got a hotspot where my thumb is and every time the ball hits the bat it just jars. Then today I got hit back in the knuckle, which I think Mohammed Shami hit me [on] in that World Test Championship.

"I've had my hand in an ice bucket all afternoon, so we'll play it by ear and assess it after the game," the veteran batter added.

Warner nearing his best form

Having already announced his retirement plans ahead of the away Ashes, Warner said the past six to eight months have been better in terms of him being in good form and the right space. Besides using his hands well, which he does quite often, Warner said feels his feet movement helped the cause too.

Although he hasn’t scored a big total in this format lately, with him feeling confident about his game, Warner is sure a game-changing knock is just around the corner.

"I've felt in total control the last six to eight months with where my game is. I'm moving into the ball, my feet are moving, not just playing with my hands," he said.

"I felt like I was onto something special in the World Test Championship final. And then the last game, the same thing. I feel like everything I'm putting in the nets is actually coming out there in the middle.

"I'm excited by it, and I think if I can keep getting myself in and keep that momentum going with my feet, a big one could be around the corner," Warner concluded.

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc isn't thinking much about the snub from first Ashes Test. The left-arm pacer says that he's been around long enough and this is not something new to him. Scott Boland was favored over Starc as Josh Hazlewood made a comeback in the Australia team during the Edgbaston Test.

"I'm used to it now coming to England. It's a squad mentality, much the same as last time," Starc told reporters ahead of the second Test at Lord's in London. "Been around long enough, been dropped enough. Probably dropped the most in this squad. Not something new to me, won't be the last time, either. It's never fun, everyone wants to play."

Starc, who was although part of the Australian playing XI during the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023, admitted that he wasn't in his full rhythm ahead of the Ashes opener.

"I came into that game feeling pretty good, but then my rhythm wasn't quite there," Starc said. "It's been a good couple of weeks of work to get back into that rhythm. We were all better for the run after that Test final at The Oval and I certainly feel less clunky than I did throughout the game."

The pacer, who has played just one Test at Lord's so far, however, is now feeling confident and good about himself shall he gets a chance to play in the second Test.

"Hopefully, that results in some good stuff if and when I play. It's all in good order, it's just about getting some time in the middle when the time comes," added Starc.

Australia, nonetheless, won the first Test by two wickets in a sensational manner. Aussie skipper Pat Cummins, who had hit the winning runs on the final day, even termed the win as 'avenging Headingly 2019'. The second Test starts from June 28 at Lord's in London.

Ashes 2023: 'Been dropped enough,' Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc brushes aside Edgbaston snub

England seamer Ollie Robinson has irked quite a few Aussies with his ugly send-off to Usman Khawaja during the Edgbaston Test. After former stars Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting took a jibe at him, ex-Australian captain Michael Clarke is the latest to shush the seamer. Clarke advised Robinson to remain mum and concentrate on bowling and picking wickets instead of using his mouth.

During the first innings of the Edgbaston Test, when Khawaja was batting on 141, Robinson clean bowled him off a Yorker and gave him a send-off, calling him a f***ing p***k”.

While Robinson didn’t care much about this following the Test match, calling it usual among players from both countries during an Ashes, the touring team doesn’t seem to be letting go of it easily.

Speaking on Big Sports Breakfast, Clarke didn’t mince his words and slammed Robinson for the send-off he gave to Khawaja. Known to be vocal even during his time, Clarke said that had it not been about senior bowlers getting injured, Robinson wouldn’t have even been considered for the first Test.

“He needs to shoosh. If England were fully fit, you wouldn’t even get a game, Ollie. If Jofra Archer was playing, or if [Mark] Wood had been playing and was fully fit, old mate — I don’t know what town he plays for — he’d be back playing clubbies,” Clarke said.

He added if someone like James Anderson had given such a send-off, it would still make sense given his credentials in Test cricket, but Robinson, who Clarke feels has been around for a very little time, must look to take wickets only.

“I actually don’t know what he’s doing. If James Anderson is saying all this, he’s got street cred (credentials). He’s played 180 Test matches; he’s got a lot of wickets. This dude has been around for five minutes. He needs to concentrate on taking wickets. Ollie, just keep taking five-fors, and then you can say what you like,” Clarke added.

England ready to even scoreline at Lord’s

Despite Bazball making all the noises ahead of the Edgbaston Test, Australia came on top, handing England their first Test defeat under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. With Oz winning the tight contest with just two wickets, England would take the positives out of the match and aim to even the scoreline at Lord’s Test, which begins on June 28.

Australia's Ashleigh Gardner tore through England's rear guard to help the visitors win the one-off test match at Trent Bridge by 89 runs on the fifth day on Monday, despite a half-century by Danni Wyatt.
The off-spinner picked up all five final day wickets to go with the three she had on day four, beginning with getting Cross caught behind on 13 runs to deny England the start to the day they needed. Amy Jones was next to depart, losing her wicket for four runs after she charged down the pitch only to see Gardener's delivery beat the outside edge and go through to Alyssa Healy who completed the stumping despite a fumble.

Sophie Ecclestone was dismissed lbw for 10 runs before Gardner bowled Lauren Filer for a duck and wrapped up the victory by getting Wyatt (54) out lbw to finish with figures of eight for 66 in the innings and 12 for 165 in the match -- both Australian women's cricket records.

"I wouldn't have dreamt of it but I guess it just shows that having five days in the test match is incredibly important," said Gardner, who was named player of the match.

For anyone with a beating heart to watch Steve Smith getting floored after being hit in the back of the head off Jofra Archer’s bouncer was a terrible sight. Imagine how painful it must be for Smith. Upon returning to the Mecca of Cricket – the Lord’s, for the first time since the 2019 Ashes Test, Smith recalls the incident wherein he got ruled out of the game due to concussion.

Smith was in tremendous form and was up against a bowler with raw pace – Jofra Archer. While batting on 80, Smith got hit on his arm off Archer’s steamy bouncer before one that hit the back of his head floored him. It was at that moment when everything inside that stadium stopped.

With team doctors running onto the field, Smith was down and was taken off immediately. Though he returned after the fall of the next wicket, following smashing Chris Woakes for a boundary, Smith got out LBW on 88. He then got ruled out of the game due to a concussion.

As the best Aussie batter returns to the same venue for the second Test of the ongoing Ashes 2023, Smith - in a conversation with the Legend of the Ashes podcast, recalls the horror memory of that incident.

"It was a very difficult period to get through. I caught one on the arm, got away with a few pull shots that are top edge and a couple in the gaps,” Smith said.

Revealing how painful that blow to the back of his head was, Smith said, "And then I copped one in the back of the head, which hurt a fair bit. At that stage, I didn't realise I was getting concussed. I went off and did all the tests, passed all the tests.

Steve added after the adrenalin went out of the system, the aftermaths of that hit struck him as he felt he was a couple of beers down.

"It wasn't until I came back out. Half-an-hour after, when the adrenalin sort of went out of my system, and I started to feel quite groggy - probably like I'd had a dozen beers, to be honest," the right-handed batter added.

Blessing in disguise

Very few must be aware that incident saw the birth of Marnus Labuschagne in Test cricket, as he made his debut as a substitute of a concussed player – Steve Smith.

Since getting into the Test setup, Marnus emerged as one of the best players in such a short period, and is now ranked number one in Tests.

While Smith, who scored over 700 runs in his previous outing in England, will aim to pile up runs as the second Test begins in three days time.

Blessing in disguise Very few must be aware that incident saw the birth of Marnus Labuschagne in Test cricket, as he made his debut as a substitute of a concussed player – Steve Smith. Since getting into the Test setup, Marnus emerged as one of the best players in such a short period, and is now ranked number one in Tests. While Smith, who scored over 700 runs in his previous outing in England, will aim to pile up runs as the second Test begins in three days time. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

After winning the first Test by a narrow margin of two wickets, the Australian pair will aim for a better outing at Lord’s.

Ashes 2023 - 'Marnus, Steve are their best coaches': Oz batting coach on star pair rising from Edgbaston slump

Former England batter Mark Butcher feels the hosts must prioritise winning the next Test at the Lord’s, and not just concentrate on endorsing their brand of cricket following Edgbaston loss. The narrow two-wicket-defeat at the hands of Australia in the first Test dented England’s winning run under new boss Brendon McCullum and Captain Ben Stokes, and Butcher feels England must look to win only.

Writing for Sky Sports, Butcher penned England did go into this series with a feel-good-factor given how successful ‘Bazball’ was in the past year, but after suffering early jitters in the home Ashes this time, they must rework their applauded strategy of going ultra-attacking and look out to even the score in London.

“You go into every series optimistic. That was certainly the case going into this Ashes series, that groundswell of feel-good factor, given the way that England have played… and then, all of a sudden, you get that reversal in terms of the result at Edgbaston.

Butcher, who, during his playing days, mostly remained on the receiving end of things, said the spectacle is fine as long as the team is winning. He, however, differed from McCullum’s view of entertaining people through Bazball and not bothering too much about the result.

“I spent an enormous amount of my career, nearly all of it in fact, getting beaten by Australian teams with no mercy. So the idea that you would almost offer up some sort of spectacle for people, with the result not mattering too much, it doesn't sit very well with me,” Butcher wrote.

‘Get ready for some heat at Lord’s

Besides Australia winning the first Test, verbal brawls, including Ollie Robinson and Usman Khawaja, made headlines too. With things already getting heated up from both ends, Butches writes he won't get surprised to see more sledges from either team.

The left-handed batter, fondly remembered for his match-winning 173* against Australia in Leeds in 2001, thinks England might not change their approach heading into the second Test but could be cautious this time.

“I don't expect England to go about things any differently at Lord's, though I think they may be a little chastened by what happened at Edgbaston.

Ashes - Not spectacle, they must prioritise winning: Mark Butcher on how England should approach Lord's Test

England’s Test head coach Brendon McCullum is proud of his players despite a two-wicket narrow defeat in the Edgbaston Test. Following one of the best Ashes Tests in a long time, where Australian captain Pat Cummins stood tall to help his team chase 281 on the final day, McCullum feels his team's style of play got the ‘validation’, and that they will bounce back stronger in the next Test at Lord’s starting on June 28.

Bazball was the ‘most-talked-about’ thing before the start of the first Ashes Test, and going by how things panned out in both innings, it lived-up to the hype. Contrary to how the previous Ashes began for England, wherein Mitchell Starc clean bowled opener Rory Burns on the first ball of the 1st Test in Brisbane, Zak Crawley hammered Cummins for a four on the first ball this time.

While Australia, who won the Test, scored at 3.20 runs per over across five days, England scored at an impressive 4.61 runs per over across both innings.

"I think we played our style, which is to try and take the game forward," Brendon McCullum said after the Edgbaston Test loss. "I thought Australia were happy playing their style as well, which ultimately led to success for them, and I'm sure they'll continue with those tactics right throughout the series. If we'd have got a little bit of the rub of the green then we might have been on the other side of it,” McCullum added.

While many questioned England’s shocking declaration on day one, McCullum feels that gave his team a chance to pounce onto the opportunity to put Australia under mat, something that didn’t happen for them unfortunately.

"I'm really proud of the boys. A couple of things didn't quite go our way at times, but that's the nature of the game. We firmly believe, the skipper and I, that this gives us our greatest chance. Everyone that has watched this game over the last five days, I would be very surprised if there were too many people who disagree with how we go about playing.

Mark Wood in line for Lord’s Test recall

With the pace attack of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson failing to deliver against the Aussie batting line-up in the first Test, McCullum sees a change happening in the second Test, with fit-again Mark Wood likely to get roped into the XI.

"Woody's a great bowler. He offers a real point of difference, and he'll always come into consideration for selection - especially on wickets that need a little bit more pace. That's the beauty of having a good squad: we've got guys to pick from,” McCullum added.

Ashes: Coach McCullum backs players despite narrow defeat, says Edgbaston loss 'validated' our style of play

Australia beat England by two wickets in the opening Test of Ashes 2023 to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Throughout the game, England's aggressive approach made heads turn and impressed many but they failed to close the game to go down eventually.

Despite England conceding a 1-0 lead, former English batter Ian Bell believes Australia still have more to work on. Australia had their back against the wall as they were reduced to 227 for 8 but Cummins-Lyon ensured no further setback for the visitors. Ashes 2023: Bell claims 'Australia have more to work on' despite Cummins & Co.'s narrow win in Edgbaston

Veteran England seamer James Anderson was left disappointed with Edgbaston's pitch and said if curators continue to prepare similar surfaces for the games to continue, he is done with this Ashes. Following a two-wicket loss at the hands of Australia in the first Test, Anderson slammed the lifeless surface, saying the pitch had nothing for the bowlers.

"If all the pitches are like that, I'm done in the Ashes series," Anderson wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. "That pitch was like kryptonite for me. There was not much swing, no reverse swing, no seam movement, no bounce, and no pace."

In one of the rare moments in Tests in England, Anderson neither started the innings nor did he bowl with the new ball during the fag end on the final day, when Cummins and Lyon walked away with the win. Upset over the change in routine for him, Anderson added he even approached captain Ben Stokes over the same and sought clarity.

There was not much swing, no reverse swing, no seam movement, no bounce, and no pace." Ashes 2023 - 'If this continues...': James Anderson slams lifeless Edgbaston pitch

England and Australia produced a memorable match when both sides locked horns in the recently-concluded first Test of Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Despite being aggressive and proactive from the word go, Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum-led England lost by two wickets and conceded a 1-0 lead to Australia.

The defeat was England's third in the Bazball-era since McCullum took over as the Test coach. Ahead of the second Test, at Lord's, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting dropped a bombshell. Punter revealed in a recent interaction that he was offered England's Test coach job before McCullum.

I got asked before McCullum: Ricky Ponting's sensational claim, says he was offered England Test coach job

It's time to tie your seatbelts as the English team is ready to change gears for good in the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

Following a narrow two-wicket defeat in Edgbaston - England's first in Test under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, former captain Joe Root urges English fans to 'strap in' for a turnaround in the second Test, which begins next Wednesday on June 28. England's highest scorer in the first inning - 118*, Root took the attack to the opposition from ball one, with him trying to play the reverse scoop to Aussie captain Pat Cummins on the first ball on day four being one example of it.

With McCullum going public about England sticking to their newest ultra-attacking approach, formally called 'Bazball', Root echoes the exact words but remains cautious of the challenges ahead.

Though there were several reasons why England fell behind in the Summer Ashes opener - be it dropped catches, missed stumpings, 23 no-balls, or to some, early declaration on day one, Root feels England's motive of going for the results via Bazball mode is bigger than these moments.

Joe Root - under whose captaincy England had an embarrassing record of one win in the last 17 Tests, admitted if he were to go back in time, he would captain his team the way Ben Stokes is leading as it is exciting and is likely to bring more out of individuals.

"That's not what we're about as a team," Root said. "If I could go back in time, I'd go back and start my captaincy tenure the way Ben has and try to play in a similar manner to how he does it.

"It's far more exciting, far more interesting, and I think we are getting more out of our team and our individuals. We're playing better cricket to watch, producing better results overall," Root added, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Time to learn from mistakes

Root said if England were to grow as a team, they needs to look beyond bad days at work and try doing things differently yet effectively. The batting veteran added for England to bounce back in the Ashes, they need to get those one-percenters rights.

"If we are going to grow as a team, we can't just look at a day like this with a couple of moments going against us and say, 'we need to do things differently'. If anything, we need to double down on how we do it, completely back ourselves and make sure we get those one-percenters right at Lord's."

Ashes 2023: Bazball-inspired Joe Root asks English fans to 'strap in' for Lord's turnaround

Usman Khawaja was Australia's star performer in the first Test of Ashes 2023. In a closely-fought contest, England had the edge for most parts of the game. But Khawaja stood tall for the visitors with brilliant knocks of 141 and 65 as Pat Cummins & Co. held their nerves to win by two wickets and go 1-0 up in the five-match Test series. Opting to bat first, Ben Stokes-led England declared at 393-8, with Joe Root unbeaten on 118, before Khawaja's sublime 141 took the Aussies to 386 all-out. With a seven-run lead, England were dismissed for 273 as they set a challenging 282-run target.

Khawaja got dismissed for 65 in the final session as Australia were reduced to 209 for 7 before an unbroken 55-run ninth-wicket stand skipper Cummins (44 not out) and Nathan Lyon (16 not out) took the Aussies home. Now, the 36-year-old dwelled on Australia's epic win and feels players 'being treated like adults after a long time' in the team environment has helped make a difference.

'If you are letting the team down in any way, that's on you'

"It's hard to quantify it (in the wins), but I think everything around that is being done with the team, with Pat and Andrew McDonald in terms of just cutting out the fluff. Cutting out the box-ticking stuff. Really stripping down the game, saying what's important, what do we think is important?" Khawaja told AAP.

"Even warm-ups every morning now are optional, do whatever you need to. That kind of stuff empowers players. It's empowered us. We take onus on ourselves. At the end of the day, you are responsible for your own performance because that in itself impacts the team. If you are letting the team down in any way, that's on you," the Aussie opener opined.

Ashes 2023 | Being treated like adults by Australia team management has made a difference: Usman Khawaja

Former England captain and commentator Michael Vaughan has pointed out his team’s biggest blunder after they suffered a two-wicket defeat in the first Ashes Test on Tuesday, June 20. Despite needing two wickets in the final hour of the final session on Day 5, England couldn't apply the finishing touches which ultimately cost them the contest. According to Vaughan, the hosts lacked killer instinct when they needed it the most but still enjoyed the Bazball stuff despite his team ending on the wrong side of the result.

While many might blame Ben Stokes’ shocking declaration on day one, with Root standing tall, as one of the major reasons behind the hosts’ first loss under Ben Stokes at home, minor mistakes also led to the same. Keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow’s rare howlers behind the wickets further contributed to it.

Brendon McCullum - Test head coach, has backed Jonny Bairstow to be England’s ideal number seven. The Yorkshire batter returned to the Test side after a gap of eight months following a leg injury, and upon getting picked, he shined with the bat, if not keeping behind the wickets.

There were a few instances during the match, including dropping off a few catches and missed stumping of Usman Khawaja, which led to the Australian opener pouncing on the chances and making the most of them. He was Australia’s highest run-scorer in the match that cost England eventually.

"I thought they were pretty tough mistakes, to be honest. I've kept over here before: it's not the easiest place to keep, and when the ball is spitting and bouncing out of the rough, it can be quite difficult - and when you've got to stand a little bit closer on a wicket which is a bit slower and can hurry [you] a little bit, there is a risk that… those sharp edges can be a little bit more difficult," McCullum said.

‘He did a really good job

Considering Bairstow had little time to get into the game-ready mode, McCullum feels Jonny was good behind the wicket throughout, and with passing matches, he will find his rhythm. Brendon said Bairstow is a real weapon at number seven.

"I actually thought Jonny kept really well, right throughout," McCullum added. "If you look at the way he progressed throughout the game as well, I think he found a natural rhythm, especially today [Tuesday], and I thought he did a really good job. And we know what he offers with the bat. Him coming in at No. 7 is a real weapon for us as well, so I think he'll be better for the run,” McCullum added.

Meanwhile, with the score line reading 0-1, England will now have to pull up their socks and see Lord’s as a chance to make it even. With reports of seamer Mark Wood likely to get a chance in the playing XI in the second Test, England will fancy their chances of going ahead with the Bazball approach.

Ashes: McCullum backs Jonny Bairstow as ideal number seven for England despite rare howlers behind wickets

Following a foul-mouth send-off to Australian opener Usman Khawaja during the first innings of the Edgbaston Test, Ollie Robinson found himself in hot waters. Although sledging and swearing are usual, at least in Ashes, Robinson’s careless remark over how the Aussies will perceive this irked a few legends, including Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting.

While Ponting sent a clear warning to Robinson over him bringing his name in his defence during a presser after the third day’s play, Hayden also slammed the English seamer by calling him a ‘forgettable cricketer’.

After Khawaja scored his maiden hundred on UK soil, Robinson bowled him on 141 off a yorker and gave him a rusty send-off, using cuss words against him. Also, he mentioned how after picking Pat Cummins in the batting order, the English bowlers have three number 11s to deal with – a statement that backfired in the end, as it was the pair of Cummins and Nathan Lyon that helped Australia beat England by two wickets in Edgbaston on the final day.

"That's how you combat England as well. Soon Pat Cummins started coming at Joe Root and hit a couple of sixes," Hayden said in a conversation with Ian Healy, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

"Then the other bloke; he's a forgettable cricketer. A fast bowler that is bowling 124 (kph) nude nuts, and he's got a mouth from the south." When Healy asked, "Who, Ollie Robinson?", Hayden replied, "Someone like him, you can just go, 'Brother, I'm coming at ya'."

‘I don’t care

While Robinson’s send-off upset a few Aussies, the English seamer didn’t bother much to react to this. Speaking to the media after England dismissed Australia seven runs shy of their first innings total on day three, Robinson said he doesn’t care how his celebration is perceived by the opposite camp. He added he was just elated after picking the big wicket of Usman Khawaja.

"It's my first home Ashes, and to get the big wicket at the time was special for me. I think Uzzie (Khawaja) played unbelievably well. To get that wicket for us as a team at the time was massive. We all want that theatre of the game, don't we? So, I'm here to provide it," he said. "I don't really care how it's perceived, to be honest. It's the Ashes. It's a professional sport. If you can't handle that, what can you handle?"

Ashes: After Ponting, Hayden slams 'forgettable cricketer' Ollie Robinson for foul-mouth send-off to Khawaja

The Ashes have well and truly begun. With on-field drama, sledges, swearing and yes, cricket too, the English summer has got off to a flying start. Following the first Test at Edgbaston that Australia won by two wickets, England seamer Ollie Robinson was asked about his ‘over-the-top’ reaction after dismissing Usman Khawaja in the first innings, where he visibly abused him. Robinson, in his reply, quoted Ricky Ponting’s example, which didn’t sit well with the former Australian captain.

On day three of the first Test, Robinson clean-bowled Khawaja on 141 on a Yorker, and was heard using cuss words against him as part of the celebration.

Though during the game, Ponting remained tight-lipped while during commentary for Sky Sports, the batting great came down hard on the bowler and the English team in his ICC Review Podcast on Wednesday.

Ponting said this new-looking English team is yet to get the taste of what it is about playing against the mighty Aussies in an Ashes series and said if Robinson hasn’t learned from his lessons yet, he surely is a slow learner.

"As I said after Ollie Robinson said what he said, this England cricket team hasn't played against Australia, and they'll find out pretty quickly what playing Ashes cricket and playing against a good Australian cricket team is all about," Ponting said. "And if Robinson hasn't learned that already after last week, then he's a slow learner."

‘Even Ponting did that before…’

Following day three play, Robinson, in a tensed presser said he ‘doesn’t care’ on how his reaction is perceived by the Australian, and even went on to mention Ricky Ponting’s name in it, saying, "We've all seen Ricky Ponting, [and] other Aussies do the same to us. Just because the shoe is on the other foot, it's not received well."

Reverting to this, Ponting said it was unusual from Robinson to bring his name like that, but since he had, he would learn quickly on why this shouldn’t happen again.

"Some of the things he had to say - I mean he even brought my name into it, which I felt was a little bit unusual," Ponting said. "But for me, it's water off a duck's back. If he is sitting back thinking about me, then no wonder he bowled like the way that he did in that game, if he's worried about what I did 15 years ago."

Ponting said if the English players were to talk about Australians in an Ashes, they must be backing that with skill set.

"He'll learn pretty quickly that if you're going to talk to Australian cricketers in an Ashes series, then you want to be able to back it up with your skills,” Ponting added.
