Veteran Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has almost recovered from the calf injury he suffered during the Ashes Test in Lord’s. Lyon is on the course to make himself available for Sheffield Shield games ahead of the Australian summer. The right-arm off-spinner, who for the first time in his career missed a Test or two due to injury, feels it came as a blessing in disguise as it helped him realise his hunger and desire to play and win major series.

Admitting to hating every moment of watching the Ashes from a distance, knowing he could be there and be the difference for his team, Lyon expressed his desire to continue playing for Australia in Tests. To prepare for the home series against Pakistan, Lyon would feature in the Shield games against South Australia at Adelaide Oval from October 15-18.

Speaking on his recovery, the veteran spinner told cricket.com.au, "It's coming along really nicely."

"First time ever in rehab, which is a new experience, but I've got all the support there at New South Wales Cricket and within Cricket Australia, so all going okay. I'm getting sick of calf raises, but should be pretty good come summer."

In the absence of Jack Leach - England’s premier spinner, Lyon had the window to make this away Ashes his own. But that didn’t happen, as injury cut short his stint, and he returned home for an extended layoff.

"I don't want this to come across arrogantly or anything like that, but I felt like I could be the difference within the two teams with Jack Leach going down at the start of the series," Lyon said. "I felt like there was an opportunity for me to be the difference in the two sides.

Lord’s injury gave Lyon new goals

Acknowledging it as a blessing in disguise, Lyon admitted that just by being home, sitting on his couch and watching the Ashes drama unfold, he realised his hunger for the game. Lyon said he always wished to win an away series in India and England and can keep himself charged and motivated to give a final shot.

With the next away Ashes four years away and Lyon already 35, he doesn’t feel any pressure to stick around till then.

"It's probably made me hungrier than ever, and it's the drive for me to get back and start getting better again. It's really driving me to chase some bigger things.

"I've said previously that I want to win in India and want to win away in England, and haven't been able to do either of them. So, it looks like I've gotta go round another cycle," Lyon added.
Retirement out of question for recovering Nathan Lyon as veteran spinner eyes series win in India, England

Ricky Ponting, one of Australia’s greatest captains ever and cricket’s keen observer, admitted England’s ultra-attacking style of play, which they called Bazball, did have the Aussies scratching their heads at some point during the recently-concluded Ashes series. Though Ponting said the 2-2 score line is a fair reflection of how both teams fared, he revealed it became tough for the touring side to combat Bazball approach even after leading 2-0 at one point.

Recently-retired England fast bowler Stuart Broad has hit out at the International Cricket Council (ICC) over penalties for slow over rates. Notably, England were docked 19 points out of their total of 28 and could manage only nine points from the Ashes 2023. Australia were also docked 10 points and got 18 in total after the series ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

“It diminishes the relevance of the World Test Championship, to be honest,” Broad told the Daily Mail.

“It’s been one of the most entertaining series of all time and for England to come out with nine points from a possible 60, the system’s wrong and needs looking at,” he added.

As per the ICC rules, one point gets docked from the total points for each over bowled less in the stipulated time by the teams.

After the series, England were found short of a combined 19 overs in four Tests out of five while Australia were found short of 10 overs, all during the rain-marred Old Trafford Test, hence a 10-point deduction. Apart from WTC points, the teams are also fined their match fee, which is five per cent for each over short.

After taking the docked points into account, Australia currently stand in third position on the WTC leader table and England are in fifth place.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, meanwhile, thinks that the officials need to make players move around a bit more to reduce the lost time.

“I think the umpires need to start just getting the players around more. Getting them ready, getting them organised, making sure the batter’s ready to face up, making sure the bowler is at the end of his mark when the batsman gets back to his crease. We’ve got to find a way not to be losing so much time in these games,” he said on an episode of ICC Review.

Former England pacer Stuart Broad hits out at ICC for slow over rate penalties in Ashes

England’s Ashes 2023 hero Zak Crawley is eyeing a place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season as he continues his purple patch. The English opener had stellar Ashes where he was England’s top scorer in the series and also played the best individual innings with 189 runs in the Manchester Test. He now eyes a long run in the white-ball format while also trying to attract a host of teams in the IPL for his signature.

"I'd love to go on that tour. We'll have to see how selection goes but the Caribbean is an awesome place to play - and I haven't had the chance to go on a white ball tour for England yet, so any opportunity I get would be awesome. If they want me for that tour, I'd absolutely love to go," Crawley told ESPNcricinfo.

The star England batter, now 25, has been capped three times in the ODI format for the national side with no caps in T20Is. However, he has been part of the team furniture in the red-ball format and has amassed more than 2000 runs for the national side.

Zak Crawley targets IPL 2024 after resounding Ashes for England - I'd love to go on that tour

One of Test cricket greats, Stuart Broad, announced his international retirement during the fifth Ashes Test at the Kia Oval in London. On his last day in whites, during the final session, Broad even picked two wickets in Todd Murphy and Alex Carey to hand England an impressive 49-run win. However, all that transpired on the field wasn’t as smooth and straightforward as the jubilation made it look.

Broad, who ended his career on a high note with 604 Test wickets – second-most by a seamer in the red-ball format, revealed the real-life talk between him and Captain Ben Stokes before the over in which he dismissed Murphy caught behind.

While many may point out Broad’s ‘mental-game tactics’ of altering the bails as the reason behind him getting lucky and tasting success against Murphy, the seamer himself dropped a bombshell, saying Stokes had informed him just before that it would be his last as Ben wanted to bring in Mark Wood for extra pace.

"Weirdly, Stokesy told me before that over, before I got Todd Murphy out, he said 'this will be your last over because I'm going to get Woody on with the extra pace'. So, I was running in knowing that would be my last ball in professional cricket. My legs went a bit jelly-like when I was running in,” Broad said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

The right-hand seamer added instead of thinking otherwise, he planned to bring his A-game and thought about banging it hard, expecting the ball to move away, which eventually happened.

Much like everyone, even he got shocked when Murphy edged it to the keeper.

"I was saying to myself 'just hit the pitch as hard as you can, try and get the ball to move away. But whack the pitch, don't bowl a floaty half-volley for your last ball in international cricket, and he nicked it. That's why I reacted like 'Oh my, he's nicked it, he's nicked it'."

"It just felt really special to finish on a win and be in the change room with all the guys that I have played so much cricket with," Broad added.

Ashes: 'This will be your last over...': Broad reveals real-time chat with Ben Stokes before Murphy's wicket

England all-rounder Moeen Ali is done with Test cricket. Again. The all-rounder, who had come out of retirement to play in the Ashes after being asked by skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, says, "If Stokesy messages me again, I'm going to delete it."

Interestingly, Ali's return to Test cricket started with Stokes texting him: 'Ashes?' after England's first-choice spinner Jack Leach suffered an injury prior to the series. With the series over at 2-2, Ali told McCullum, who asked him if he'd consider playing in India in early 2024: "That's me done."

"They knew from the start," Moeen said, laughing. "Especially when those India venues came out! Baz (McCullum) asked me again when I had my day off on the second day (in final Test). I said no. I'm not going [to India]. There's no way I'm going. That's me done. It's nice to finish like this and be part of an amazing day."

While Moeen's comeback series didn't go as well as he'd have liked, the all-rounder says it's 'great to finish like this (at 2-2).'

"Test cricket is the best cricket," Moeen said. "I wish I could rewind time. Although my career has been a bit up and down, I wouldn't change it. I've loved it. I would have regretted it later in life. It was quite daunting, because I've never done well against Australia."

"I still don't believe I've done that well, but it was great to finish like this. It was daunting, but I had nothing to lose, it was a free hit. I had a call from Baz and Stokesy, I felt like I was bowling alright, but the finger was the only issue. I wasn't worried about the bowling."

England all-rounder Moeen Ali is done with Test cricket. Again. The all-rounder, who had come out of retirement to play in the Ashes after being asked by skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, says, "If Stokesy messages me again, I'm going to delete it." Interestingly, Ali's return to Test cricket started with Stokes texting him: 'Ashes?' after England's first-choice spinner Jack Leach suffered an injury prior to the series. With the series over at 2-2, Ali told McCullum, who asked him if he'd consider playing in India in early 2024: "That's me done." "They knew from the start," Moeen said, laughing. "Especially when those India venues came out! Baz (McCullum) asked me again when I had my day off on the second day (in final Test). I said no. I'm not going [to India]. There's no way I'm going. That's me done. It's nice to finish like this and be part of an amazing day." Also Read: Ashes 2023: England, Australia docked points in double digits for slow over rate While Moeen's comeback series didn't go as well as he'd have liked, the all-rounder says it's 'great to finish like this (at 2-2).' "Test cricket is the best cricket," Moeen said. "I wish I could rewind time. Although my career has been a bit up and down, I wouldn't change it. I've loved it. I would have regretted it later in life. It was quite daunting, because I've never done well against Australia." "I still don't believe I've done that well, but it was great to finish like this. It was daunting, but I had nothing to lose, it was a free hit. I had a call from Baz and Stokesy, I felt like I was bowling alright, but the finger was the only issue. I wasn't worried about the bowling." Notably, Moeen didn't play in the second Ashes Test due to the finger injury. He, however, took three wickets in Australia's second innings during the final Test to help England win. Moeen was crucial to break Australia's rhythm on day 5 at the Oval despite suffering groin injury in the match as England secured series-leveling 49-run win. England all-rounder Moeen Ali offers update on extending Test career post Ashes

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja agreed with Ricky Ponting's questioning on ball change in the visitors' second innings during the fifth Ashes Test. Australia eventually lost the Test by 49 runs as the five-match series stood equal at 2-2. The ball was changed in 37th over of the Australian innings on day four before play was halted due to rain and only 11 ball could be bowled prior to that.

The change came in after a Mark Wood-bouncer hit Khawaja on the head and the umpires deemed that it had gone out of shape. Khawaja, at the post-match presentation, however, said that the new ball was very different.

"We started off really well," Khawaja said. "The big thing was that ball. As soon as they changed that ball, the first over they changed that ball I knew straightaway this ball is very different. I went straight up to Kumar and said 'how old is this ball you've given them because it feels like it's about eight overs old.' You could see the writing on both sides and it hit my bat so hard.

"Obviously I got hit in the head by Woody, and they changed the ball because they said it got damaged. But that new ball that came in, when I hit my bat … I've opened in every single innings this Ashes series and I haven't felt the ball hit my bat as hard as that ball felt when it hit my bat.

"So I said to the boys even coming into today (day 5) to be careful, this new ball, it's going to be tricky. It's going to be a lot harder than that other ball. Some things you can't control in this game. It was disappointing for us because I felt like we had a real stranglehold on that game."

The Aussie openers had added 140 runs before the ball change derailed their plans. Australia, after negotiating first 11 deliveries with the new ball, lost three early wickets in the first session of the day 5 to Mark Wood and Chris Woakes. Former Australia skipper Ponting also questioned the ball change and the condition on the new ball given to England during the lunch on day 5.

"I just cannot fathom how two international umpires that have done that a lot of times before can get that so wrong. That is a huge moment in this game, potentially a huge moment in the Test match, and something I think actually has to be investigated: whether there was the right condition of balls in the box, or the umpires have just, blasé, picked one out of there that they think will be okay to use," he said.

The second session was washed away with rain but the the third session again saw Australia losing wickets in clumps. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes took five wickets together to leave Australia eight down and 90 short of 384-run target.

Ashes 2023: Usman Khawaja, Ricky Ponting question ball change after series ends at 2-2

Fast bowler Stuart Broad played for the last time for England during the final Ashes Test against Australia at Oval, London on Monday, July 31. The pacer, who managed to take 604 wickets in his 166-Test long career, ended on a high note as he took the final wicket to take England home.

It was a fitting farewell for Broad, who ended his swansong with a peach of a delivery to dismiss Australia's Alex Carey as England equaled the Ashes 2-2 with a 49-run win.

The ball, bowled round the wicket, was pitched outside off on a good length, prompting Carey to come forward to defend. The ball, however, moved enough to take the edge off Carey's bat and Jonny Bairstow did the rest behind the stumps. Have a look at the wicket here:

Broad details retirement call

Speaking with Sky Sports on Saturday, Broad revealed his decision to step aside from cricket and added the Ashes is the perfect platform to do so. Having played each Ashes home game since his debut outing against Australia in 2009, Broad remained England's go-to-bowler and with over 600 wickets on his back, he bows out as one of Test cricket's greats.

"It's been a wonderful ride, a huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and the England badge as much as I have," Broad told Sky Sports at the close of the third day's play. "And I'm loving cricket as much as I ever have. It's been such a wonderful series to be a part of, and I've always wanted to finish at the top. And this series just feels like it's been one of the most enjoyable and entertaining I've been a part of."

Broad added he finally decided to hang his boots at around 8:30 pm the previous night and told Captain Ben Stokes in the changing room.

"I've been thinking about it for a while, a few weeks," he added. "England vs Australia has always been the pinnacle for me - I have loved the battles with Australia that have come my way and the team's way, I have a love affair with Ashes, and I think I wanted my last bat and bowl to be in Ashes cricket.

"I told Stokesy [Ben Stokes] last night and told the changing room this morning, and, to be honest, it just felt the right time, and I didn't want friends or Nottinghamshire team-mates to see things that might come out, so I prefer to just say it now, and just give it a good crack for the last Australia innings.

"I have thought a lot about it, and even up till 8 pm last night, I was 50/50. But when I went up to Stokesy's room and told him, I have felt really happy since and content with everything I have achieved," Broad added.

The Australian Cricket Team gave a guard of honour to outgoing Stuart Broad as he came out to bat during day four of the ongoing fifth Ashes Test at the Kia Oval in London. After the third day's play in London, Broad announced his decision to retire from all formats. The right-hand seamer, earlier during this series, became only the second fast bowler after compatriot James Anderson to pick 600 Test wickets. As England got all out on 395, they gave Australia a target of 384. By lunch, Australia were 75 for no loss in 24 overs, needing more than 309 runs to win the match and an away Ashes for the first time since 2001. Broad details retirement call Speaking with Sky Sports on Saturday, Broad revealed his decision to step aside from cricket and added the Ashes is the perfect platform to do so. And this series just feels like it's been one of the most enjoyable and entertaining I've been a part of." Broad added he finally decided to hang his boots at around 8:30 pm the previous night and told Captain Ben Stokes in the changing room. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Ashes: Australian Team give guard of honour to outgoing Stuart Broad on day 4 of Oval Test - WATCH

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting blasted the Aussie bowlers for not being able to capitalise with the new ball and letting England put pressure on them. Ponting's comment came at lunch on day 3 after England's opening batsmen made small work of the 12-run deficit.

"Australia have been a bit all over the place, to be honest. I think what it has highlighted throughout the series is when you've got the new ball in hand, you'd better be ready to start and bowl your best delivery. If you don't - as we saw today - there is a boundary off the first ball, then 13 off the first over and the pressure is suddenly on the bowlers. That's what England are trying to do and create. Australia haven't been ready," Ponting said.

England opener Zak Crawley in particular was severe on visiting bowlers as he hit another fifty in the series. During the commentary, former England skipper Nasser Hussain also took a cheeky dig at Ponting, saying the latter is about to just explode.

“I think Ricky Ponting is just about to explode,” Hussain laughed. “Everyone in world cricket knows where to bowl to Zak Crawley … you bowl fifth stump, back of a length. They bowled on his pads, they bowled both sides of the wicket. They got it wrong and now they’re playing catch-up cricket. You can have as many theories as you want, but you’ve got to bowl better,” added Hussain.

England, after bowling Australia out for 295 in the first innings, raced away to 389/9 in their second innings, thanks to fifties from Crawley (73), Joe Root (91) and Jonny Bairstow (78). Apart from them, Crawley's opening partner Ben Duckett and skipper Ben Stokes also scored 42 each as the home team scored runs at about five per over.

Ashes 2023: Former skipper Ricky Ponting blasts Australian bowlers for 'not being ready' with new ball

The ongoing Ashes between Australia and England produced yet another controversial run-out decision during the second day of the fifth Test and England's Stuart Broad is not amused by it at all. The incident involved Steve Smith who went on to add another 29 runs following the decision as Australia secured a slender 12-run lead in the first innings.

As for the play in context, Smith ran for a double in the 78th over of the innings while batting on 42. England substitute George Ealham came running from deep midwicket and fired a rocket throw which Jonny Bairstow collected and dislodged the bail. Smith appeared short of crease despite a full-length dive but the replay suggested a close call. Have a look at the video here:

Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad not amused about Steve Smith's 'grey area' run out decision - WATCH

Australia may have retained the Ashes urn but their style of play in the ongoing series in England has left everyone baffled. With England ploughing their way via hyper-aggressive Bazball, the usually 'in you face' Aussies have stuck to a calm and content approach.

The juxtaposed styles of play were visible on the first two days of fifth Test as well. England scored 283 run in their first innings in just 54.4 overs while Australia scored almost similar runs (295) in almost double the number of overs. By looking at the Aussies play as less attacking team, former England skipper Michael Vaughan said that he's never seen the Kangaroos play with so much fear.

“They are taking home the urn, but I’ve never seen Australia play with so much fear,” Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special.

“They are usually so aggressive and try to take the game forward. They have just sat in to bat a long period of time without remembering you have to put a bit of pressure on the bowlers.”

Ashes 2023: Australia playing with 'so much fear,' thinks former England skipper Michael Vaughan

England's James Anderson is going nowhere. The veteran seamer, aged 40, playing his fourth Test in this Ashes, has picked just five wickets and yet doesn't look like hanging his boots anytime soon. Speaking to Sky Sports after the second day's play at the Kia Oval in London, Anderson admitted being rusty but ruled out any chance of him not appearing for England in whites again.

Following the Manchester-drawn Test that saw rain washing out five out of six sessions on the final two days, several experts and pundits pointed out Anderson's 'lack of zip' as one of the reasons why England failed to dismiss Australia early in the second innings, and thus couldn't go for the win.

Having picked just four wickets at over 76 in the lead-up to the fifth and final Ashes Test, Anderson was under pressure to perform after getting backed by Captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.

When asked about his retirement plans, Anderson played it down in a fraction of a second, urging he still has some fuel left in him and that he also gets to decide on when to part ways with this game.

"In terms of retirement, I have no interest in going anywhere anytime soon," Anderson told Sky Sports.

"If Stokesy [captain Ben Stokes] and Baz [Test coach Brendon McCullum] say, 'you have not got the wickets we would like', I am absolutely fine with that, but I feel like I have a lot more to give.

"I have tried not to listen to the comments. For me, that question has been there for the last six years, even longer. As soon as you get into your 30s as a bowler, it's, 'how long has he got left?', Anderson added.

'I get to decide when to leave

Anderson has been around for over 20 years now. After all that he did for England and achieved as a professional cricketer, the veteran seamer said he deserves to decide when to retire.

"I don't feel like I'm bowling badly or am losing pace or that I am on the way out. I still feel I can offer a lot to this team.

"I'd like to [decide when I go]," Anderson added.

Shedding some light on his performance in the ongoing Ashes, Anderson said, "We all know as professional cricketers that you go through lean patches. You just pray it is not in the most high-profile series you can play in!

"I try to look at it objectively. Yes, I have not got the wickets, but I am still trying to do the job for the team and help the guy out at the other end."

Ashes: James Anderson plays down retirement talks despite mediocre outing, says he still has lot to offer

With Ashes already retained, Australia showed no sign of letting the chance of winning the urn in England for the first time since 2001 go away. The fifth Test at the Oval in London is Australia’s final stop on this long English tour, and they began on a good note. With an eye on a 3-1 series win, Australia retained their top bowlers, with Starc coming good on day one with a four-wicket haul.

After electing to bowl first, Australian bowlers were found wanting in the first 10 overs, with England batters starting on a brilliant note. With something to lose and all to play for, English batters showed no signs of slowing down before Mitchell Marsh removed left-handed Duckett caught on leg-side for 41 off 41 balls. Four runs later, Zak Crawley got out, while Joe Root followed on five.

Moeen Ali and England’s prospect Harry Brook put the side back on track, with both having a crack at the bowlers at will. Moeen, in his 34-run knock, smashed two sixes, while Brook, who looked like getting his maiden Ashes hundred, scored 85.

A 111-run stand was brought down by Todd Murphy, who, on his return game, bowled Ali. Starc then came back and removed two star-batters in captain Ben Stokes and Brook, with Hazlewood removing Jonny Bairstow on four.

Chris Woakes and Mark Wood showed some resistance with 36 and 28, respectively, but two more wickets to Starc and one to off-spinner Murphy ended England’s innings on 283 in under 55 overs.

Australia’s ageing pair of David Warner and Usman Khawaja began cautiously, with one aim in mind – not allowing England take advantage with a fall of wicket on day one. Though the veterans James Anderson and Stuart Broad had their moments with the new ball, the batting duo stood their ground for the longest time possible.

However, like how every good thing comes to an end, Woakes dismissed Warner caught in slips just at the fag end of the day on 24.

ALSO READ: WI vs IND, 1st ODI: Ishan Kishan, Kuldeep Yadav help India draw first blood, beat West Indies by five wickets A 111-run stand was brought down by Todd Murphy, who, on his return game, bowled Ali. We have our first! Ashes, 5th Test: Australia in command as Mitchell Starc triggers England's collapse with four-for on day one

The fifth and final Ashes Test kicked off on Thursday (July 27) at The Oval, London. After Pat Cummins-led Australia took an unassailable 2-1 lead in the fourth Test, which was drawn due to rain, the visitors are eyeing a historic Ashes series triumph in England whereas Ben Stokes & Co. aim for a 2-2 stalemate in the series decider.

After end of Day One, the match is evenly poised as England made 283 and in reply, and Australia went to stumps at 61 for 1. After the opening day's play, former Aussie captain Ricky Ponting was completing his broadcasting duties along with the host of the show, Ian Ward, when the duo interacted with spinner Todd Murphy. The host had to cut short the interaction when he noticed the Oval crowd throwing grapes at the Aussie duo. While Murphy didn't react and left, Punter was furious and said 'won't mind finding out who it was'.

5th Ashes Test: Ricky Ponting loses cool after crowd at The Oval hits him with grapes post Day 1 - Watch

Mitchell Starc is Australia’s most successful bowler in the 2023 Ashes with 19 wickets so far, and despite suffering a heavy blow on his shoulder while fielding in the previous Test in Manchester, the veteran seamer remains unbothered about it. Starc said the only thing he cares about now is how he can help Australia beat England in the final Test at the Oval and clinch a historic series win on their soil for the first time since 2001.

After electing to bowl first in the fifth Test, Australia dismissed England on 283 on day one, with Starc picking a four-wicket haul, getting rid of Captain Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Chris Woakes.

Speaking to the media after the first day’s play, Starc said he didn’t get any scans done on his troubled shoulder, adding he can bowl fine despite little pain, which can be looked after following the end of this Test.

"I'm not interested in getting scanned or anything like that," Starc said. "We'll worry about that at the end of the week. Just a bit of discomfort there, something going on there in the AC [joint]. Nothing major, and I'm still able to bowl and do what I need to do."

While Starc needed to get some extra strapping during the day, he returned to pick crucial wickets to trigger England’s collapse.

Having dealt with injuries throughout his illustrious career, Starc said such discomforts are part and parcel of the game and will go away eventually. Though he missed the first Test in Edgbaston, with Australia picking fit-again Josh Hazlewood instead, Starc performed in all three Tests with both new and old ball.

"I've played for over ten years and been through a few niggles and injuries over the time. There's been times when I've left the team a man down or other people have. We all push through niggles and whatnot. No difference this week, it's just a little bit of discomfort, and away we go," Starc added.

Winning Ashes motivates me: Starc

With Australia already leading 2-1 and having retained the urn on the back of that, winning the fifth Test and clinching the trophy is the only aim on their head. And that in itself is enough for Starc to not worry about his shoulder injury and instead push extra to go for the win.

"It's not the most comfortable thing. But I don't think any bowler [in] international cricket is going to say it's something that's comfortable for the body. So just push on. We've got a big week ahead of us to try and win this Ashes series and then a few weeks off so there's no reason not to get up for this week,” Starc on his shoulder pain.

Ashes, 5th Test: ‘Brave’ Mitchell Starc not worried about shoulder injury, eyes clinching historic series win

Despite David Warner announcing his retirement plan earlier, former Australia legend Glenn McGrath feels the ongoing fifth and final Ashes Test at the Oval could be his last in this format. For the nth time this series, Warner began well but failed to convert it to a big score, getting out on 24, thus raising pressure on him and questions around his selection.

McGrath, perhaps cricket’s greatest, let alone Australia’s, thinks if Warner doesn’t come up with something magnificent with the bat in the second innings, he might not play Test cricket again.

“There’s a bit of pressure on Dave Warner,” McGrath said on SENQ Breakfast. “He looked ok (in the first innings at the Oval) but then got out again. To be honest, I think, unfortunately, that maybe it’s coming towards the end of his career."

After Australia ended England’s first innings on 283, both Warner and Usman Khawaja had good 30-odd overs to play, and it’s fair to say both did a tremendous job for most of it. Woakes, not Broad, picked Warner’s wicket this time, getting the nick off his bat straight to Crawley at second slip. This kind of dismissal is not new for everyone, as the Aussie veteran keeps getting out in this fashion regularly, especially in England.

McGrath said knowing Warner has expressed his desire to play till next home summer and hang his boots from Tests at his home ground in Sydney (against Pakistan), his performances are not helping him much.
“I know he came out the other day and said he wanted to play it to the end of next summer. But I think the pressure is on him; the vultures are circling. Unless he comes out in the second dig and produces a big score, I think he might struggle,” McGrath said.

“Unfortunately, he’s got a lot of starts this series and then just gets out. He had that big innings back in Australia on Boxing Day where he got the 200, but there hasn’t been a sort of real big score before or after that for quite some time,” McGrath added.

Ashes 2023: England skipper Ben Stokes won't bowl in final Test at Oval

The rise of T20 cricket might have put the remaining two formats under some stress, but former England Captain Eoin Morgan argues this is for the greater good. Speaking with Digvijay Singh Deo – Sports Editor of WION, in an exclusive chat, Morgan said never before this moment has this game been this popular around the world. Having plied his trade in almost every league, Morgan knows about the pros and cons of this latest format but remains firm in his opinion that the rise of franchise-based T20 leagues will only benefit this game.

While questions surrounding the slow death of Test cricket in the wake of the expansion of T20 leagues keep even the top bosses searching for answers, Morgan sees a positive side of it, saying what this format has done in helping cricket reach the masses outside of regular playing nations neither of the ODIs and Tests was able to do so.

"Cricket has never been more popular around the world. Cricket is spreading far and wide. T20 cricket has allowed cricket to grow at a pace that no other format has been able to achieve it. So, we need to sit back and thank T20 cricket and recognise it for taking it everywhere," Morgan said.

ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE: Morgan names India, England as favourites for World Cup; picks T10 as cricket's ticket to Olympics

Expressing his thoughts on what happens to ODI cricket in the near future, Morgan dropped a bombshell revealing in ten years, ODI cricket will be confined only to 50-over World Cups, as players and boards will be inclined towards playing and hosting franchise-based T20 tournaments, respectively.

"The 50-over format is under pressure the most. The Future Tours Programme (FTP) is looking like there will be more T20 cricket played than bilateral; the game needs to change with that, and that's how it's going to go. You can't fight the exceptional growth and pace at which the game is becoming so popular. I think ODI Cricket is going to become, at some stage, most likely confined to just World Cups," Morgan added.

Heart goes out to Zimbabwe, West Indies

Following the end of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, two teams that sealed the remaining spots for the mega event were Sri Lanka and Scotland, thrashing former two-time champions West Indies and Zimbabwe out of the race. With disappointment luring in for both teams, Morgan - currently playing and captaining Harare Hurricane in Zimbabwe’s inaugural T10 league, shared his thoughts.

ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE: Morgan names India, England as favourites for World Cup; picks T10 as cricket's ticket to Olympics Expressing his thoughts on what happens to ODI cricket in the near future, Morgan dropped a bombshell revealing in ten years, ODI cricket will be confined only to 50-over World Cups, as players and boards will be inclined towards playing and hosting franchise-based T20 tournaments, respectively. Heart goes out to Zimbabwe, West Indies Following the end of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, two teams that sealed the remaining spots for the mega event were Sri Lanka and Scotland, thrashing former two-time champions West Indies and Zimbabwe out of the race. With disappointment luring in for both teams, Morgan - currently playing and captaining Harare Hurricane in Zimbabwe’s inaugural T10 league, shared his thoughts. While he said having Zimbabwe in for the 2023 World Cup would have been great for them and cricket, for what they bring to the game, he was disappointed for the West Indies on not making the cut. 5th Ashes Test: James Anderson the greatest pacer, proclaims Ben Stokes after his inclusion in England XI

After the second day’s play at Old Trafford, Aussie quick Josh Hazlewood, in a presser, said he would pray to rain Gods to help them retain the urn, and his prayers got answered, as the rain did washout day five to see this game end in a draw. As a result, on the back of a 2-1 lead in the ongoing Ashes, Australia retained the urn for the fourth time.

It comes as a huge disappointment for England, who were head and shoulders ahead of their opponents in this Test and looked like sealing the game to level the series 2-2. While home fans and the English dressing room would rue the missed opportunity to win back the urn for the first time since 2015, the Aussie camp would be happy to claim it without putting not even half a good performance in this Test particularly.

With five out of six sessions getting washed out on days four and five, Australia, who were 61 runs behind with five wickets in hand, would feel lucky to get away in this Test as the final match at the Kia Oval in London would be England’s game to win, to at least level the series.

Ashes, 4th Test: Hazlewood’s prayers worked as rain played spoilsport to help Australia retain urn

Former English captain Michael Vaughan has put his fingers on England’s ‘sentimental selection’ of James Anderson in the fourth Test in Manchester as one of the reasons Australia got away with the draw and retained the Ashes. Vaughan said picking Anderson over Josh Tongue may have cost England the chance to win back the urn for the first time since 2015.

England’s veteran seamer Anderson was rested for the third Test in Leeds following mediocre outings in the first two games. He, however, was brought in for Ollie Robinson for perhaps his final Ashes Test at his home venue at Old Trafford. That move didn’t pay dividends as the right-arm seamer returned with one for 81 in 37 across both innings – that also of Pat Cummins caught at cover.

Ashes 2023: Glenn McGrath points out Ben Stokes' decision that cost England a win in fourth Test

If not for anything, forcing a result out of an impossible situation is something Bazball has done to Test cricket and must get its dues. Under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, English Test cricket revived, the world got the entertainment they were craving, and results are likely to follow regardless of the conditions, pitch, line-ups and whatnot. Former Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara is up for the same as he awaits the result of the ongoing fourth Test in Manchester.

As things stand, Australia is trailing by 61 runs with five wickets remaining as rain continues to play spoilsport at Old Trafford. For what is at stake, England must win this Test to stay in the hunt for the Ashes because if the game gets washed out and the match gets drawn, Australia will retain the urn.

With more than four sessions already washed out due to rain on days four and five, chances of England finding a way to win this Test are starting to look bleak. It is where the Bazball will come into play, and Sangakkara feels with what is being injected into the side, England know they can pull this off.

Writing for Sky Sports, Sangakkara shared his thoughts and wrote, “England have really turned Test cricket on its head and made it so approachable, so attractive. They have forced results from impossible positions.

"There is also a larger vision of entertainment in Test cricket for this England side and how they make it approachable to the newer generation, the younger generation that have done cricket in reverse - got into the franchise formats, fallen in love with the game and then looked around to see what else is out there,” he further wrote.

‘Winning is important to this English side’

Sangakkara backs the idea of England playing Bazball cricket for the greater good - making Test Cricket result-oriented and full of entertainment. He added for this English side winning is as important as anything, but on the larger front, Kumar feels England is doing something that is bringing fans back to the ground, something this game, or this format in particular, needed.

“Winning is important, and this particular England side want to win, they play to win, but the risks they run playing in the manner they do are worth the times you fail because it is fulfilling the larger vision.

Whatever happens in this series or isolated series does not matter. They have made a huge statement. They have asked fans if they are entertained, and the answer is 'yes',” Kumar wrote.

ALSO READ: Harmanpreet Kaur lands in HUGE trouble following misconduct with officials during 3rd ODI vs Bangladesh With more than four sessions already washed out due to rain on days four and five, chances of England finding a way to win this Test are starting to look bleak. ‘Winning is important to this English side’ Sangakkara backs the idea of England playing Bazball cricket for the greater good - making Test Cricket result-oriented and full of entertainment. Ashes: England have made Test cricket approachable, attractive, says Sangakkara

England fast bowler Stuart Broad thinks it would be unjust if the weather decided the outcome of the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester. There's a rain prediction for the final day of the Old Trafford Test, just like the fourth day which saw only 30 overs being bowled.

“Sitting in the changing room watching the rain fall yesterday, there was definitely a feeling it would be unjust if weather had a decisive say,” Broad wrote for the Daily Mail.

If the fourth Test ends in a draw owing to weather, England would not be winning the series but will only have the chance to draw the series 2-2 at best. As of now, Australia are 61 runs behind England but the hosts need only six wickets for a shot at winning. Broad also wrote that he'd love to go in the final Test at the Oval 2-2.

“If we can get to 2-2 it would set up the series just as I’d hoped it would. I said I would love to go to the Oval at 2-2, and I genuinely meant it,” he said.

While taking six wickets could take a bit of time even if the play happens on day 5, the English fast bowler, however, thinks that the momentum never left the home team. Notably, England are 1-2 down in the series with defeats in the first two Tests.

“I have never felt the momentum has left us in this series because ultimately we played a brilliant game at Edgbaston, although Australia came out on top,” he said.

“In our own minds, we felt we played all the cricket — we declared on day one, bowled them out and tried to set up a game to get a result. Yes, Australia got the first two results with victory at Lord’s too, but it didn’t feel like the impetus was with them, and Ben Stokes’s innings of 155 in the second Test galvanised us.

“Getting within 43 runs created a do-or-die scenario and from then on we knew we had to get things exactly right. At Headingley, we were great and the first few days here we were brilliant,” wrote Broad.

Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad says rain deciding Manchester Test would be 'unjust'

Aussie quick Josh Hazlewood wouldn't mind rain interruption on day four of the ongoing fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford as England sit in a comfortable position to level the series 2-2. As the weather forecast in Manchester shows 75% chances of rain pouring down from 11 am local time onwards, Hazlewood and the Australian team will fancy the prediction coming true after getting hammered for almost one-and-a-half days in this Test.

After Australia's first innings ended on 317, England made light work of the spin-less Australian bowling line-up, with Zak Crawley hitting a stunning 189. Besides, five other English batters also completed fifties, including Jonny Bairstow, who remained unbeaten on 99. Thanks to the mammoth batting show by the home team, England scored 592, leading by 275 runs.

In the second innings, Australia got reduced to 113 for four at stumps on day three, with Mark Wood picking three wickets. Given the touring side stares at a probable defeat with rain likely to play spoilsport on the remaining two days, Hazlewood said he would be pleased if proceedings get halted in Manchester.

However, if the rain persists and the game gets drawn, Australia will retain the Ashes irrespective of the final Test's result.

"I'd be very pleased," Josh Hazlewood admitted. "It's obviously forecast, but forecasts can change all the time. Obviously, rain and light play a big part in cricket and have done forever. So, yeah, it'd be great to lose a few overs here and there, and make our job a little easier if I'm hanging in there."

Bairstow expects different outcome despite rain forecast

On the other side, England batter Jonny Bairstow thinks otherwise and feels even though cloud cover would be there, it would make things interesting for the hosts as they would need little assistance from the weather to mat Australia in the fourth Test.

With the Duke Ball likely to move around a tad more in the first hour, Bairstow expects seamers to draw early blood and pick six wickets quickly before rain halts play.

"The weather is the weather, and I'm not Michael Fish," Jonny Bairstow said, referencing the famous BBC forecaster of the 1980s and 1990s, as quoted in ESPNcricinfo.

"Coming in tomorrow, if there is a bit of weather around, maybe some overheads, you'd like to hope we're able to create some chances. The weathermen have been right, the weathermen have been wrong, who knows what's going to happen? We'll still turn up with the same mindset and that will be to try and take another six wickets," he added.

Ashes: Hazlewood hopes rain forecast turns true on day four as England eye to level series in Manchester

Jonny Bairstow was left stranded on 99 in England's first innings in Manchester, but the keeper-batter didn't show remorse or grudge over being unable to complete his hundred. Instead, he felt grateful to return to doing what he does best and narrated his comeback story following a horrific slip last year that almost ended his career.

After England lost eight wickets with Hazlewood tearing into the English lower-order, it looked like their lead of around 200 was good enough to make a match out of it. However, Bairstow had different plans. The right-handed batter took the onus on himself and went berserk, hitting Aussie quicks to all parts of the ground.

Before anyone could realise, the keeper-batter crossed the 90-run mark and inched closer towards hitting his first hundred of the season.
For Bairstow, or any person for that matter, to come out of such an injury and play cricket, let alone do well under pressure in the high-octane Ashes, is no less than a miracle, and Jonny is all but grateful for it.

"You just don't know how bad it's going to be. It could have ended my career," Bairstow told Sky Sports after day three play.

"I've got nine pins, and a wire that goes through my ankle, and I've had nine months out," he said. "I'm still only ten months post-operation right now. So when you speak to the surgeon, and he says, 'I'm surprised you're walking and running, never mind playing professional sport', I'm delighted to be where I'm at."

"There's times when there's aches and pains and people are saying you're limping, well, yeah, I am at times, because there's a lot going on in the ankle, and other bits that people won't understand. It's been a rollercoaster. There's been a lot that's happened in those nine months. Ashes: Jonny Bairstow grateful to deliver for England, narrates comeback story after career-threatening injury

Ashes is on the line, and Australia’s Mitchell Starc is not ready to drop the guard when his team needs him the most. Having suffered a nasty-looking blow to his shoulder while fielding during day two of the Manchester Test, Starc will continue to bowl on day three, per the team’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori. With England leading by 67 runs after stumps on day two, Vettori feels Starc is ready to fire and bring Australia back into the game despite an injury scare.

After helping Australia fight a little with the bat in hand, scoring an unbeaten 36 in the first innings, the veteran seamer picked Ben Duckett’s wicket inside the first five overs. The left-armer also troubled Moeen Ali and Zak Crawley with steamy bouncers and inswingers but didn’t participate much following the shoulder bump.

Also, Starc expressed discomfort in his leg earlier, keeping the Australian camp and fans on their toes. Speaking in detail about his suspected injury scares, Vettori said while his leg looks fine, Starc still has to be careful with his shoulder. However, he remained adamant about Starc’s availability on day three of the fourth Ashes Test.

"He's one of those guys who doesn't like to spend too long off the park. But he got straight into a hot spot, and three balls in a row came to him in the field, and he didn't quite feel comfortable throwing it. I haven't actually spoken to him, but that's what it looked [like]. We're all pretty confident he can bounce back tomorrow,” Vettori added.

Vettori optimistic about Australia’s chances in fourth Test

After conceding at a run-a-ball during day two of the Manchester Test, Australia found themselves in a spot of bother, with Zak Crawley and Joe Root piling runs at will. Though both are back in the hut, Australia still has to dismiss captain Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow.
Vettori, however, feels Australia can still make a comeback in the game, but for that, they have to bat exceptionally well in the third innings – which, to him, will make or break this Test for the touring side.

Zak Crawley’s Ashes-saving 189 from 182 balls and Joe Root’s 84 off 95 balls have put England on the front foot as they lead Australia by 67 runs with six wickets in hand and three days left. A day that belonged entirely to England, saw Chris Woakes completing his maiden Ashes five-wicket haul in the first innings.

For the nth time in this series, a batter got out on the first ball of the new day, as this time it was Aussie captain Pat Cummins who found Ben Stokes at covers off Woakes. Though Hazlewood tried contributing his best, it was Starc who churned out runs but couldn’t do it for long as England’s hero with the ball in hand - Woakes returned to dismiss the number 11 and finish with figures of five for 62.

England lost their opener, Ben Duckett, early to Starc as Australians continued troubling the English top order with some nasty short-pitch bowling in the first 10 overs. After weathering the storm for a good one hour, Moeen Ali and Crawley came good, having found a rhythm. Both batters started hitting bad balls for fours as tension seemed to rise a bit in the Aussie camp.
