Former Pakistan women’s team captain Sana Mir retained her place in the commentary panel for India’s marquee game against Pakistan in the Women’s 50-over World Cup despite facing social media backlash for referring to ‘Azad Kashmir’ in one of her earlier remarks. The incident occurred during Pakistan’s tournament opener against Bangladesh at the R Premadasa Stadium – the venue for the ongoing India-Pakistan game. Calling out the game from the commentary box, Mir mentioned Azad Kashmir while talking about batter Natalia Pervaiz’s background, igniting a social media debate. “…captaining a very young side. Indonesia MotoGP: World champion Marc Marquez crashes out as Aldeguer wins

Plenty has happened in Indian Cricket in the past couple of days, and even though Shubman Gill's appointment as the new ODI skipper was the biggest draw, the reports of two stalwarts, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, getting picked on merit from now onwards, leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, have also made headlines. The two former captains returned to the Indian side for the first time since their 2025 Champions Trophy triumph in March (this year), leading the star-studded batting attack for the forthcoming Australia One-Dayers. A Times of India (TOI) report has stated that the selectors picked the batting greats for the three-match Australia ODIs based on their performances in their last outing for India (during the multi-team tournament), and in the future, they shall be considered for selection on merit only. Also read | IND vs AUS ODIs: Nitish Reddy gets maiden call up, Bumrah rested - Check full squad Meanwhile, upon replacing Rahul Dravid as the new India head coach in July 2024, Gautam Gambhir worked closely with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, preparing the roadmap for the next 50-over World Cup in Africa. Considering Rohit and Virat’s form and their retirement announcements from the remaining two formats, the selectors were left wondering about their willingness to continue playing ODIs for another two years. However, ahead of the marquee ODI series against Australia, the selectors took a tough call to name a new captain in Gill. Shubman, who replaced Rohit as the new Test skipper earlier, will now be leading India in the 50-over format Down Under. “It has been a collective effort by Gambhir and Agarkar. They understand that it will be tough for both Rohit and Kohli to be at their peak after two years, given that they are in their late 30s. They didn’t want to be caught off guard if suddenly Rohit or Kohli’s form dipped. It would have created chaos in the leadership group. The duo announcing retirement from Tests days before the selection for the England tour was a case in point,” a BCCI source said, as quoted by the TOI. “The team won the Champions Trophy and two Tests in England even without Bumrah. It has given the confidence that no one is indispensable in the current scenario,” he continued.
So, why Gill over Rohit?
Since Rohit retired from the two formats, leading the dressing room in just one format would have invited conflict, something the board and the management would want to avoid ahead of two crucial years for Indian cricket. Shedding light on the same, the BCCI source said, “A player of Rohit’s stature in a leadership role would have meant he would get to drive his philosophy in the dressing room. But with him playing only in ODIs, a format which is played the least, it could have disturbed the team culture. Gambhir had taken a back seat in Tests and ODIs in the first six months of his assignment, but the debacles against New Zealand and Australia prompted him to take charge more firmly.” Meanwhile, the white-ball leg of the series begins with three ODIs on Sunday (Oct 19) at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

The two former captains returned to the Indian side for the first time since their 2025 Champions Trophy triumph in March (this year), leading the star-studded batting attack for the forthcoming Australia One-Dayers.

The spotlight was on Praveen Kumar at the ongoing 2025 World Para Athletics Championships on Saturday (October 4). The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium crowd knew he had delivered for India on multiple occasions, and this was another moment of expectation. India stood on the brink of their best-ever gold medal tally at the worlds — one short of surpassing their six-gold haul from Kobe — and Praveen had a shot at making history. The men’s high jump T64 final had its share of drama. Praveen, with his characteristically short run-up, asked the buzzing crowd for silence before each attempt, tuning into the intensity of the moment. He cleared crucial heights with composure, but Uzbekistan’s Temurbek Giyazov produced a personal best of 2.03m to clinch gold, while Great Britain’s Jonathan Broom-Edwards grabbed silver with 2.00m. Praveen had to settle for bronze on countback, clearly disappointed but dignified in defeat. “I did my best, but I was carrying a hip injury that caused pain right in the middle. That affected my performance. I’ll aim for gold next time,” Praveen said after the event. The mood in the stands soon lifted when Ekta Bhyan picked up a silver medal in the women’s club throw F51. She registered a season-best mark of 19.80m, but Ukraine’s Zoia Ovsii was in a different league from her very first attempt, setting the tone with a best throw of 24.03m. Ekta acknowledged the Ukrainian’s dominance while taking pride in her own performance. “Yes, I threw over 21m at the Asian Games and I’ve won gold at the World Championships before, but today I’m happy with my season-best. Ovsii was outstanding,” she said. The attention now turns to the final day, where sprint sensation Simran and Paralympic javelin champion Navdeep Singh will headline India’s campaign. Simran, who won 100m gold on Friday (October 3), continued her fine form by winning her 200m T12 heat alongside guide Umar Saifi, clocking a season-best 25.03s to reach the semifinals. Her coach and husband Gajendra Singh stressed the importance of focus. “We’ve moved on from the 100m gold. Tomorrow’s final is a new challenge — it’s a world championship, anything can happen. The key is to stay fit, hydrated, and ready for the conditions,” he said. Adding to India’s medal tally, Soman Rana secured silver in the men’s shot put F57 with a season-best 14.69m. Initially awarded bronze, his medal was upgraded following a successful protest against Thiago Paulino Dos Santos’ 14.82m attempt. Fellow Indians Hokato Hotozhe Sema and Shubham Juyal were also in the field. With Rana’s medal, India not only crossed their Kobe tally of 17 overall medals but confirmed this edition as their most successful World Para Athletics Championships ever.

With her bright smile, blonde hair pulled back in a no-nonsense ponytail, and a presence that lights up the track, Hannah Cockroft is impossible to miss. Off the track, she has a blend of playful charm and steely determination — a champion who can strike a pose as effortlessly as she shatters records. On it, she’s a force of nature: relentless, graceful, and utterly dominant. At the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships being hosted in New Delhi, Great Britain’s Hannah Cockroft added another golden chapter to her storied career, storming to her 19th world championships gold medal in the women’s 800m T34. The nine-time Paralympic champion clocked an astonishing 1:49.88, setting a new championship record and reaffirming her status as one of the greatest wheelchair racers in history. Cockroft, who has been unbeaten in major finals since 2011, admitted she hadn’t realised this was her 19th world title until she was told post-race. "I didn’t think about that number, but I’m absolutely buzzing. This is probably the performance I’m most proud of,” she said with a wide smile. Despite a lengthy delay at the start due to introductions for other events, Cockroft remained composed. She credited the atmosphere inside the stadium and the support from teammates and fans for helping her stay focused. “They kept us waiting for a while on the start line, but the energy from the team and the crowd was amazing. I don’t want to let that record go, but it does bring pressure too because every eye is on you, expecting something special,” she acknowledged. “I’m just glad that today it was also a championship record. Another year unbeaten — that feels amazing.” While the record time was impressive, Cockroft insisted her focus was always on executing the perfect race. “People come to championships for medals. I’ve loved my two weeks here — the people have been so welcoming and enthusiastic,” she said, adding that she’s looking forward to some “good sleep and good memories” before getting back to training.

In the heart of the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships 2025, as the sun blazes down on the practice area, the energy is unmistakable. The stands are filled with a buzzing crowd, their cheers carrying the unmistakable roar of support for Team Netherlands. It’s not just the athletes that the crowd is here for, but the promise of greatness that always seems to accompany the Dutch. From the football pitch to the track, the Netherlands has long been a nation synonymous with sporting excellence—think of icons like Femke Bol, whose achievements in athletics have become legendary. At this championship, the fervor is palpable. The Dutch fans, ever passionate, line the stands, waving their flags and shouting their encouragement to the athletes. It’s clear: when Team NL competes, the crowd comes alive, and they come with the weight of national pride on their shoulders. Under the shade of a tree, with the Netherlands flag tied proudly to a nearby branch, two key figures of the team—coach Patrick and team doctor Monique—sit in the quiet of the practice area, reflecting on the whirlwind journey that brought them here. The sandpit in front of them, where long jumpers will soon train, is inscribed with a message in the grainy earth: “GO TEAM NL.” It’s a sentiment that resonates not just within the team but throughout the stadium—a nation’s pride, a team’s determination, and the ever-growing legacy of Dutch sportsmanship. As the world’s top athletes compete under the hot Indian sun, WION spoke to Patrick and Monique to hear about the challenges, victories, and behind-the-scenes efforts that are shaping Team NL’s remarkable run at the World Para Athletics Championships.
A Challenging Start, But a Promising Journey
For both Patrick and Monique, the journey to this moment wasn’t without its hurdles. From unfamiliar surroundings to navigating new tournament logistics, the beginning of their stay in India was a test of patience and adaptability. “The first few days were pretty tough,” Patrick recalls, settling into his chair with a look of quiet reflection. “We had to get used to everything. The weather, the venue, the organisation—it was all new. India is different from what we’re used to, and it took time to figure out how things worked.” Monique, ever the pragmatic one, agrees. “The organisation had its challenges in the beginning. Things were a bit chaotic, but as the days went by, we saw things getting better. And now, it’s running smoothly.” But despite the initial hurdles, the Dutch team came together and began to thrive. Their journey so far has been nothing short of remarkable. “It’s been great,” Patrick says with a proud grin. “We started strong, and the gold medals helped set the tone for the rest of the tournament.”
The Power of the Crowd
A signature of any championship is the crowd. For Team NL, their supporters bring an energy that’s simply unmatched. When their athletes take to the field, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation that fills the air, as though every cheer, every chant, and every wave of the Dutch flag adds fuel to the fire of their competition. “The support is amazing,” Patrick says, recalling a particularly memorable moment when Dutch athlete Fleur was performing in the long jump. “Yesterday, when Fleur jumped, the stands were packed. It was one of the busiest nights at the stadium. The crowd was there, specifically cheering for Fleur. It’s incredible to see how much people care.” Monique echoes his sentiment. “When the crowd gets behind the athletes, you can really feel it. That energy gives them a boost, an extra shot of adrenaline. It’s not just about the performance on the track; it’s the collective spirit that helps them rise to the occasion.” For any athlete, this kind of crowd support isn’t just a nice bonus; it’s a driving force that can make the difference between good and great performances. Patrick is quick to point out how important it is for the athletes to feed off this energy: “The crowd really lifts them. It gives them confidence, pushes them to give their best.”
Motivation and Mental Health: A Holistic Approach
Patrick’s approach to coaching is rooted in more than just strategy. For him, motivation is about building a mindset that can withstand both the highs and the lows of competition. He makes sure that his athletes are not just physically prepared, but mentally ready for whatever comes their way. “We always talk about the game plan before the competition,” he explains. “But more than that, we remind the athletes to have fun. We tell them that they’re lucky to be doing what they love for a living. Not everyone gets that chance. So, they should enjoy it, give their best, and, above all, have fun.” This focus on enjoyment and perspective is one that has become a cornerstone of Team NL’s ethos. Patrick’s coaching philosophy isn’t just about winning—it’s about nurturing athletes who can perform at their highest level while enjoying the journey. Monique, who plays an equally important role in the athletes’ well-being, approaches her work with the same level of dedication, but her focus is on health. Keeping the athletes injury-free and healthy is her top priority. “Prevention is key,” Monique says firmly. “Injury prevention, staying healthy, and maintaining good mental health are all part of my job. Here in India, with the heat and the different food, we have to be extra cautious. We focus a lot on preventing illnesses, especially stomach or bowel issues, which can be common in this climate.” She also knows that mental health plays an integral role in performance. “Diet, rest, and managing stress are just as important as the physical preparation. If they’re not mentally healthy, they won’t perform to the best of their ability.”
A Unified Team Approach
What makes Team NL stand out is the seamless collaboration between the athletes, coaches, and medical staff. The symbiotic relationship between Patrick and Monique is a perfect example of this dynamic teamwork. While Patrick handles the strategic and motivational aspects, Monique ensures the athletes are physically and mentally prepared to perform. “Our job is to make sure the athletes can perform at their best,” Monique says. “And that starts with bringing them to the tournament healthy, both physically and mentally.” Patrick nods in agreement. “It’s a team effort. Every single person—athletes, coaches, medical staff—plays a crucial role in making this a success. We all contribute to the bigger picture.”
Looking Ahead
As the competition draws closer to its final stages, Team NL remains focused, determined, and full of pride. For Patrick, Monique, and their athletes, the journey isn’t just about the medals. It’s about pushing their limits, inspiring one another, and leaving everything on the field. “The journey doesn’t end here,” Patrick says with a smile. “We’ll keep pushing, keep improving. That’s the mindset of Team NL.” The message of "GO TEAM NL," etched in the sand just steps away from where they sit, is more than just words. It’s a rallying cry that embodies the spirit of a team—and a country—united in their pursuit of greatness. And as they continue their run at the World Para Athletics Championship, that spirit is stronger than ever.
