The International Cricket Council (ICC) is testing a new rule which could soon be the part of international matches across formats. This new rule, pertaining to like-for-like replacement of a player during an internal or external injury, is currently being implemented by Cricket South Africa, Cricket Australia and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in multi-day matches at the domestic levels. The boards will report back to the apex body with detailed analysis of the rule and its implementation method after which the ICC would make rules to implement it in the international cricket.
What is this new injury rule being experimented by the ICC?
Under this new injury rule, the boards are trying replacing players for a team which they lose during the match because of an internal or external injury. The internal injury is something which requires a scan, for eg. a muscle tear and the player is sent to scans to determine the extent which is followed by the decision on replacing him for the rest of the match by a like-for-like replacement. Also Read - India have not only beaten Pak in women's ODIs but done with THIS record intactAs for external injuries, such as dislocation or broken bones, the match referees can take a call on the replacement of the player in consultation with the authorities. The race for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final’s is all set to heat up as a host of teams prepare for another push in the latest set of qualifiers. Starting upcoming Wednesday (Oct 8), no European side has yet to confirm its place in the main tournament, but that won’t be the case as the latest international break is set to take the spotlight. This includes England, Spain, France and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, so here’s a detailed look at who can seal qualification for the prestigious tournament, which is set to take place in the North American countries of the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Group A
Slovakia are the surprise Group A leaders after an early victory away to Germany. They will open up an unassailable lead at the top of the group and secure World Cup qualification with maximum points from meetings with Northern Ireland and Luxembourg, coupled with Germany failing to beat Luxembourg, and then the four-time World Cup winners drawing with Michael O'Neill's men.
Group B
Switzerland have made the perfect start to their qualification campaign and know that they will be North America-bound should they continue that run with victories over Sweden and Slovenia, and Kosovo fail to take maximum points from either of their fixtures with the same opponents.
Group C
The qualification picture from the most tightly-contested UEFA group will become clearer after October's fixtures as leaders Denmark travel to bottom club Belarus before hosting third-placed Greece. Scotland have two home games to look forward to, with Greece and then Belarus the visitors to Hampden Park.
Group D
France go into the latest international window knowing that victory in their two fixtures with Azerbaijan and Iceland, and a draw between Iceland and Ukraine, will see them qualify for World Cup 26. Back-to-back victories for Les Bleus, coupled with Iceland losing to Ukraine and the eastern Europeans failing to defeat Azerbaijan, would also be enough for the beaten 2022 finalists and 2018 winners. ALSO READ | From Mithali Raj to Janette Brittin, 5 players with most runs in Women's ODI World Cup history
Group E
Spain have made a blistering start to their qualification campaign with impressive away wins against Bulgaria and Türkiye and have the opportunity to return to the World Cup this month. Poland, who currently sit alongside Oranje on 10 points, have only one fixture in this window as they head to Lithuania.
Group H
Austria, who boast a 100 per cent record from their four games to date, have the opportunity to take over as Group H leaders as they welcome San Marino and then travel to Romania. Current table-toppers Bosnia-Herzegovina are in action just once during this round of games, with a clash away to Cyprus their challenge for October.
Group I
Powered by the phenomenal goalscoring exploits of Erling Haaland, Norway have a 100 per cent record from their five games with 24 goals for, and only three against, to stand on the brink of qualification. Stale Solbakken's side will return to the global stage for the first time since 1998 if they claim another victory over Israel, and second-placed Italy fail to win either of their games with Estonia and Israel.
Group J
The battle for supremacy in Group J enters a crucial period in October as Belgium first play host to leaders North Macedonia before making the trip to Cardiff to face Wales, opponents who they shaded a seven-goal thriller with back in June. Kazakhstan are North Macedonia's next challengers, while Craig Bellamy's Dragons only have one qualifying fixture this month.
Group K
England have largely cruised through their opening five fixtures, winning all five without conceding a goal with the highlight being a 5-0 romp away to Serbia last time out. Thomas Tuchel's team will reach the World Cup if they claim three points in Latvia, and Serbia do not win both of their matches against Albania and Andorra. A draw would be enough for the Three Lions, should Serbia draw with Albania and then fail to defeat Andorra.
Group L
Croatia have the opportunity to secure top spot in the coming fixtures, but it would require an unexpected setback for Czechia for them to do so. The 2022 semi-finalists and 2018 finalists would need to beat Czechia and Gibraltar in their two fixtures, and hope Ivan Hasek's side fail to defeat Faroe Islands. Alternatively, victory over Czechia and a draw with Gibraltar would also be enough should Lokomotiva suffer a shock reverse in Torsvollur.

During the upcoming qualifiers, England, Spain, France and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal can qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, so here’s a detailed look at who can seal qualification for the prestigious tournament, which is set to take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has backed the next big thing in Indian cricket, Abhishek Sharma, to succeed Down Under. Picked in the 15-man T20I squad for the forthcoming Australia series, Abhishek will have all eyeballs on him after leading the runs tally in the just concluded 2025 Asia Cup. Known for his free-flowing cricket, Abhishek could be a handy customer in the Aussie conditions, reckons de Villiers. Although he failed to replicate his purple patch in the three-match One-Day series against Australia A in Kanpur, AB feels he is in the form of his life and upon getting his chance Down Under, Abhishek can only thrive. Speaking on his YouTube channel, de Villiers explains what makes Abhishek a batter to look out for in those conditions. Also read | Is Shubman Gill good enough a leader to win ODI series Down Under? ‘Impressed’ Finch contemplates “Abhishek Sharma is in the form of his life; some are saying he is the best opening batter in the world right now in this format. All-round player, fantastic batter to watch," he added. Meanwhile, since moving to SunRisers Hyderabad in the IPL, Abhishek upped his game, and the former Melbourne Renegades’ coach Simon Helmot details how. In a chat with the Indian Express, Simon revealed, “It’s more about his stance. He’s adjusted and slightly… He’s become more relaxed at the crease, not as tense and rigid. He’s able to access both sides of the ground. He’s able to get in really good positions. Doesn’t over-complicate the way in which he plays. He’s quite still at the point of impact.” “He plays the ball quite late. He presents a wonderful bat face. His head is in a beautiful, steady position. He watches the ball intently and can get himself in easy positions to be able to access various sides of the ground… It’s more mental for Abhi. He’s always been touted with lots of ability and skill, and now we’re seeing that start to flourish. That comes with mental toughness, a greater understanding of your own game," he added.

Although he failed to replicate his purple patch in the three-match One-Day series against Australia A in Kanpur, AB feels he is in the form of his life and upon getting his chance Down Under, Abhishek can only thrive.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar says that decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill as India's ODI skipper was the right call. The decision came on Saturday (Oct 4) when the BCCI announced the ODI and and T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Australia which starts October 19. The change was made keeping ODI World Cup 2027 in mind by which Rohit would be hitting 40 years mark. India’s Preeti Pal produced her season-best performance to clinch the silver medal in the women’s 100m T35 final on the concluding day of the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi on Sunday (October 5). Her medal, however, came after a dramatic sequence of events that saw the race being re-run due to a technical glitch at the start. Notably, the initial race was not halted after the starting gun fired twice, and all the athletes crossed the finishing line. It was only after a while that the officials reviewed the incident and decided to do a re-run after a gap of nearly one hour. Preeti, who initially felt exhausted and demotivated, came back strongly to clock 14.33 seconds — her best time of the season — to secure the silver medal. “I was feeling that I won’t be able to come. My motivation was very low,” Preeti said after the race. “All the players were saying that they were very tired. I thought we are going home. But then we were not going home,” she laughed, recalling the confusion. Also Read: World Para Athletics Championships 2025: All eyes on Simran and Navdeep as Praveen battles hip pain for high jump bronze She explained that the issue was ‘a double click’ from the starting gun at the start. “The race should have been stopped.
