India are a win away from reaching the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 after thrashing Zimbabwe on Thursday (Feb 26) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 72-run win means India just need a win on Sunday against the West Indies in their final Super 8 Group 1 match and take another step towards defending their T20 World Cup title. T20 World Cup 2026 scenarios: Not poor form, not West Indies, but THIS factor can stop India from reaching semis

With two more matches, we take a detailed look at who can seal semifinal qualification and who is out of the race. What we know so far? After Thursday’s results, South Africa (four points from two matches) are officially through to the semifinal of the T20 World Cup, joining England, who have sealed their qualification from Super 8 Group 2. Also in Group 2, Zimbabwe (no points from two matches) are officially out of the tournament, meaning only India (two points from two matches) and the West Indies (two points from two matches) have the opportunity to join South Africa in the semis from Group 1. As things stand, both India and the West Indies will go head-to-head in the final Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup on Sunday. While India have a negative net run rate (NRR) and the West Indies have a positive NRR, it won’t be part of the equation unless rain washes out the match in Kolkata on Sunday. If India beat West Indies on Sunday, they will be through to the semis to defend their T20 World Cup title, while the same applies to the West Indies. In another scenario, the winner of the India vs West Indies match will have the opportunity to topple South Africa for the top spot, but that remains a rarity considering the type of cricket the Proteas are playing. This scenario also needs South Africa to lose to Zimbabwe, which remains out of the window for now.

It will be “D-Day” for Pakistan on Friday (Feb 26) as England and New Zealand square off at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo in the Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup 2026. With fate not in their hands and belief in their hearts, Pakistan will be at England’s mercy if they are to retain any chances of playing in the semifinal of the tournament. Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign is all but done following Sri Lanka’s crushing loss to New Zealand in their second Super 8 match in Colombo. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and UTDRF carried out detailed inspections, regularly measuring ice thickness before and during the races. Additionally, a scientific assessment based on 15 years of weather data was conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics to evaluate environmental patterns and ensure the safe execution of the marathon. Race Director Chamba Tsetan, an ice hockey player, said the marathon was launched in 2023 to promote winter tourism in Ladakh, a season traditionally marked by minimal tourist activity due to harsh weather conditions. Inspired by the Antarctica Marathon, the event has quickly evolved into a major winter attraction. Organizers noted that the marathon has significantly boosted economic activity in the Changthang region of Eastern Ladakh. Homestay tourism, local employment, youth engagement, and community participation have transformed the typically quiet winter months into a vibrant sporting season.

The 4th Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2026 concluded at 14,272 ft in Ladakh, drawing 460 runners from across India and abroad. Held in sub-zero temperatures, the event boosted winter tourism and local economy, with strong participation from the Army, ITBP and local communities.
