A look at the updated World Test Championship 2025-27 standings after Australia secured an innings and 51 runs victory over Bangladesh in Mackay on Sunday.
Australia strengthened their chances of reaching the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) Final with a convincing 51-run win over Bangladesh in the second Test in Mackay on Sunday (Aug 23). Mitchell Starc was the standout performer, taking 10 wickets in the match, including 4-39 in Bangladesh’s second innings after producing career-best figures of 6-12 in the first. The fast bowler played a key role in helping Australia bounce back from their surprise defeat in the first Test.
Bangladesh, who managed just 64 runs in their first innings, were bowled out for 95 in their second innings on the second day. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took three wickets each.
Earlier, Australia were dismissed for 210, with Cameron Green scoring 67 and Lyon contributing 32.
Shoriful Islam took a career-best 7-48, but Bangladesh’s poor batting performances in both innings allowed Australia to seal a comfortable victory.
Australia’s win percentage has now risen to 80 per cent, while Bangladesh’s has dropped to 55.56 per cent. However, there was no change in their positions in the standings.
South Africa and Australia remain the leading contenders, with the two teams needing six wins from their remaining 10 and 12 matches respectively to reach the likely qualification mark.
New Zealand are also in the race and need six wins from their remaining 10 Tests to stay close to the top two.
Australia’s victory has made the qualification battle tougher for the Asian teams. India need seven wins from their final eight matches to remain in contention, while Bangladesh require five wins from their last six.
Sri Lanka face an equally difficult task, needing six victories from their remaining seven matches, leaving them with almost no room for mistakes.
England and Pakistan are now close to being eliminated from the race, with only an unlikely turnaround keeping their hopes alive. West Indies have already been knocked out of contention.
The 2027 WTC Final will be played at Lord’s in London in June, with the top two teams in the standings, based on their percentage of wins, qualifying for the decider.
