Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict: Wrestler's appeal for Olympic medal deferred till August 16

The Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS) has delayed the verdict for Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogatin response to her disqualification appeal from 50kg freestyle gold medal bout at the recently-concluded Paris Olympics 2024 till August 16 at 9:30 pm India time.

Phogat was disqualified after being found overweight by 100 grams on the morning of the final bout on August 7. This is the third time that CAS has deferred its decision in the case.

Phogat appealed against her disqualification a day after the incident on August 8. Earlier, CAS had announced the date of the verdict as August 9 before deferring it to August 13.

Indian Olympic contingent's chief physician Dinshaw Pardiwala informed on August 7that the support staff did all they could to bring the weight down but unfortunately failed. She was later hospitalised at a local polyclinic as a precaution on the same day.

Phogat was discharged a day laterfrom the hospital after recuperating from dehydration for trying to lose weight ahead of the final.

The entire Indian sports fraternity was in disbelief as soon as the news brokebut Phogat, while speaking to coaches, called it 'part of the game,' reported news agency PTI.

IOC chief PT Usha, meanwhile, has thrownVinesh under the bus in response to criticism directed towards the IOA medical team, saying in combat sportsthe athletes are responsible for their weight management.

"The responsibility of weight management of athletes in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team. The hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation," Usha said in a statement.
