Wrestler Vinesh Phogat continues to be in the news. Ahead of her appeal against her disqualification for the gold medal match in women's 50kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics 2024, which is set to be out today (Aug 13), sources close to the wrestler revealed that she is 'feeling better' and has 'started eating' but still isn't talking to anyone. The young wrestler was disqualified for being marginally overweight within the permissible limit. Post this, her health deteriorated and was even admitted to the hospital, for a brief period. Following this, she filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her disqualification and even asked for the joint silver medal.
Sharing the latest update on Vinesh, a source close to the wrestler told India Today, prior to her departure from Paris Games Village, "Vinesh is feeling a little better now, started eating a bit. She is not talking to anyone though. We are all with her."
The Paris Olympics concluded on Aug 11 (Sunday) with the Indian contingent ending with only six medals. Vinesh was assured of a gold or silver medal when she entered the final in her category in wrestling before being disqualified. Amid her disqualification and appeal, she also shocked one and all by retiring from the sport last week (on Aug 8).
All eyes on CAS verdict
Notably, the hearing was postponed on Saturday (Aug 10). It will now take place on Tuesday (Aug 13) at the CAS with Harish Salve defending Indian wrestler Vinesh. Joelle Monlouis, Estelle Ivanova, Habbine Estelle Kim and Charles Amson are the lawyers who represented Vinesh in the hearing earlier. The verdict is likely to be out later Tuesday evening.
Talking about the winner in Vinesh's 50kg category, at Paris 2024, USA's Sarah Hildebrandt beat Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman, who was asked to take Vinesh's spot in the final, to win gold. Guzman had earlier lost her semifinal bout to the Indian wrestler but got a second shot at gold after the latter's disqualification.
