French Open: Novak Djokovic casts doubt on quarterfinal participation as knee injury takes center stage
Novak Djokovic has cast doubts on his French Open quarterfinal participation against Casper Ruud as he struggled with a knee injury during his R16 contest against Francisco Cerundolo. Djokovic, seeded number one for the Roland Garros, battled past Cerundolo in a five-setter having also been involved in a similar contest in the third round. Djokovic is primed to face Ruud but could opt to withdraw with eyes on Wimbledon and a maiden Olympic gold medal.
Djokovic doubtful for Casper Ruud contest
"I don't know what will happen tomorrow or after tomorrow if I'll be able to step out on the court and play. You know, I hope so. Let's see what happens," said Djokovic after beating Cerundolo 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Monday (June 3).
"I guess we'll do some more screening and tests and checkups tomorrow, as well. We have done some with doctor right now after the match. Some positive news but also some maybe concerns, so let's see tomorrow."
Djokovic was seen holding his knee and was down 4-2 in the fourth set where he was on the brink of elimination. However, he came from behind to win the match but was clearly in pain having also beaten Lorenzo Musetti in a five-setter contest that ended at 3:07 am in the early hours of Sunday morning.

While nothing is decided yet, the three-time French Open champion will take a call on Wednesday when he faces Ruud for a place in the semifinal. His win against Cerundolo was his 370th at a Grand Slam and he could have to wait till Wimbledon for his next win.
The dominance of the three (Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer) could end at the French Open this year. Nadal lost to Alexander Zverev in the opening round while Federer is no longer an active player. If Djokovic also pulls out of the French Open, this year there will be a new champion other than the big three since Stanislas Wawrinka in 2015.
