Hull City made a memorable return to the Premier League by beating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium. Playing in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, Hull City took the lead in the 17th minute through Semi Ajayi after Manchester United failed to clear a corner.
Sergej Jakirovic’s team extended their lead in the 38th minute. Nobel Mendy guided a dangerous free-kick delivery from Regan Slater past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to make it 2-0.
United had more of the ball after the break and brought on Marcus Rashford as they looked for a comeback. However, Hull defended well and kept the visitors from creating clear chances.
Bryan Mbeumo came closest to scoring for United, but his effort was stopped by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
United had started brightly, with Mbeumo forcing an early save from Tzolakis. Matheus Cunha also tested the Hull defence, but the hosts soon settled into the match and began creating opportunities of their own.
Oli McBurnie saw his header saved by Lammens before Tzolakis denied Regan Slater. From the resulting corner, Ajayi reacted fastest to give Hull the lead.
