Paris Paralympics 2024: Nitesh Kumar wins second gold for India with badminton singles victory in SL3 category

Indian para athlete Nitesh Kumar won the gold medal in men's singles badminton SL3 category on Monday (Sep 2) at the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024.Nitesh beat Great Britain's Daniel Bethell 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 to win India's second gold and took the total medal count to nine.

This is India's second consecutive gold in the event, having won it in the Tokyo Paralympics 2021 as well.

Pramod Bhagat had won the gold last time in the SL3 category in the Tokyo Paralympics 2021 by beating Bethell. It was in Tokyo that para badminton made its debut in the Paralympics.

SL3 category players have severe limb disabilities, which requires para badminton players like Nitesh to play on half-width court. The 29-year-old is an IIT Mandi graduate and suffered an accident in 2009 which caused permanent leg damage.

Yogesh Kathuniya Defends Silver

Para athlete Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver for the country in F56 discuss throw event on Monday (Sep 2).Kathuniya won the silver with his season-best throw of 42.22 m, which he managed in his first of six attempts only.

The gold was won by Brazil's Claudiney Batista with a throw of 46.86 m—a Paralympic record now.

Kathuniya had won the silver in the same event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2021 as well and did well to defend his medal in Paris.

Earlier on Sunday (Sep 1), Nishad Kumar won silver in high jump and Preethi Pal won a bronze in 200 m - her second medal of Paris Paralympics.
