India shooter Arjun Babuta suffered a heartbreak at the Paris Olympics 2024 as he missed a medal in men's 10m air rifle event by the barest of margins on Monday (Jul 29). Arjun finished fourth in the final round - just 1.4 point short of medal - despite being in contention for a silver for most of the time.
The shooter did not hide his disappointment after the event and said to broadcasters: “Fourth is the worst position to be in. The pain is unbearable. It’s very hard to deal with.”

Babuta finished with a total score of 208.4 after 20 shots while third-placed Victor Lindgren of Sweden finished with 209.3 points. The Swedish shooter had reached to 209.3 after his last shot of 10.0 and Arjun needed 10.4 or more to stay in contention but managed only 9.5 points on the final shot.
"Eventually, I have to move on. Today, I’ll indulge my thoughts, whatever they may be. I am fighting with my thoughts right now. Did I give my 100 per cent? I did. So was it luck? Is there a blind spot in my technique? Or is there any other aspect which I don’t know now?” he added.
A number of Indian athletes have finished at fourth place in the previous editions as well including Milkha Singh, PT Usha, Aditi Ashok and Abhinav Bindra.

Babuta, after the event, was consoled by former gold medalist Bindra who had finished fourth in the same event at 2016 Rio Olympics.
“He (Bindra) explained to me that the fourth-place finish will only make me stronger. It’s important, he stressed, that I accepted it and moved soon either by laughing over it or any other way… in the future, it’ll make me stronger, he made me understand,” Babuta said. “It’s not the end of the world. I am going to pursue this goal going ahead.”
