Story highlights

FIFA has fined the AFA and suspended several Argentina players and staff following the World Cup final chaos, with additional sanctions imposed for disciplinary breaches, including the Falklands banner.

FIFA has taken disciplinary action against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and several Argentina players and staff members over multiple incidents during the 2026 World Cup, including the confrontation after the final on Jul 19. The AFA has been fined USD 321,000 for several disciplinary violations. One of the incidents involved a banner displayed by some Argentina players after their semi-final win over England. It carried the message “Las Malvinas Son Argentinas”, which translates to “The Falklands are Argentine”.

Argentina will also have to play its next home match in a stadium operating at only 50 per cent of its normal capacity. FIFA has suspended an additional stadium restriction and USD 100,000 of the fine on a probationary basis. Another USD 100,000 from the penalty must be used for an anti-discrimination programme.

FIFA has also punished members of Argentina’s delegation for their roles in the post-final incident. Spanish player Pablo Martn Pez Gavira has also been suspended.
