On Monday (July 29), India managed a 1-1 stalemate versus Argentina in their second group-stage clash in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 edition. Fresh from a 3-2 win over New Zealand, Harmanpreet Singh-led Men in Blue had a tough contest versus Argentina but managed to prevent a loss courtesy of a last-minute thrilling goal from skipper Harmanpreet in an important Pool B match at the Games. This became only the second instance of a draw between the two heavyweights, with the first occurrence dating back to 2004.
Talking about the contest, it was Argentina who took a 1-0 lead after a 0-0 scoreline at the halfway mark. Both teams tried their luck but a goal from Lucas Martinez saw his side go 1-0 up in the latter part of the second quarter. India failed to capitalise on many opportunities, especially by missing to convert a chance via penalty with just two minutes left in the third quarter. Argentina's defence proved resilient from the beginning of the match before India were blessed with another penalty corner in the end moments of the game, which was finally converted by Harmanpreet after three retakes of the PC. Speaking to Sports 18, Indian skipper Harmanpreet said after the game, "Whenever we come on to play, we just think about converting every chance we get. Be it a field goal or a PC (Penalty Corner). Well, better late than never, because this was a very important match. Overall, we played really well...Team is playing very good. Both on the ball and off the ball, going into the opponent's circle...We are getting good chances, but yes, I think we need to improve our finishing."
India will next lock horns with Ireland, i.e. a crucial and potential must-win match for Harmanpreet's side. Ahead of the encounter, the Indian captain said, "I think our plan is to focus match by match. Today was Argentina, and now we will analyse Ireland, who are also a good team. No match will be easy, and we will need to work on every detail we can get."
