PR Sreejesh has announced that the Paris Olympics will be his last tournament with the Indian Men's hockey team. The 36-year-old played a key role as India won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020. Sreejesh and Manpreet Singh spoke to WION Sports editor Digvijay Singh Deo to reflect on that campaign and also look ahead to Paris 2024.

The Indian men's hockey team survived some anxious moments before defeating Argentina 5-4 in the shootout after both teams were locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time in a FIH Pro League match here on Wednesday. Mandeep Singh (11th minute) and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay scored two field goals for India, while Argentina found the net from penalty corners through Lucas Martinez (20th) and Tomas Domene (60th).

In the shootout, skipper Harmanpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh scored twice each with Abhishek being the other scorer. It was a keen contest between India and Argentina in the first half. While world no.6 India dominated the first quarter, the Los Leones, ranked a rung below, were the better side in the next 15 minutes. The Indians started on a positive note with Sanjay getting the first shot at the goal in the fifth minute, but his reverse hit was saved by an alert Argentina goalkeeper Tomas Santiago. But India were not to be denied for long as six minutes later, Mandeep scored from a field effort after being fed by Rajkumar Pal.

The Argentines came close seconds from the first quarter, hitting the post first and then from the rebound Maico Casella scored, but by then, the hooter went up to keep India's lead intact. Interestingly, India's chief coach Craig Fulton continued with veteran PR Sreejesh in front of the goal, indicating his preference for the sole goalkeeper's slot in the final Paris Olympics squad.

Argentina pushed hard and slowly started to build pressure on the Indian defence in the second quarter. Argentina, in the process, got three quick penalty corners, the last of which was converted by Lucas Martinez from a rebound after Sreejesh made a brilliant save to keep out Nicolas della Torre's fierce flick.

In the final five minutes of the second quarter, the Indians secured three back-to-back penalty corners but skipper Harmanpreet failed to find the back of the net. It was a neck-and-neck fight between the two sides after the change of ends with both India and Argentina managing a few circle entries but goals eluded them.

Seconds from the third quarter, India had a bright chance through Abhishek but his reverse hit was off target. Then, India scored through Lalit, who pushed in Jarmanpreet Singh's pass.

Down by a goal, a desperate Argentina withdrew their goalkeeper for an extra field player in search of the equaliser.

Their ploy worked as they exerted tremendous pressure on the Indian defence, which conceded two penalty corners seconds from the final hooter, and Sreejesh was beaten by a fierce fierce flick from Domene to take the match into shootout. The Indian men's team will take on hosts Belgium on Friday in the European leg of the Pro League.

On Wednesday (Feb 28),&nbsp;Hockey India released a joint statement in response to former senior women's team coach Janneke Schopman and&nbsp;outgoing CEO Elena Norman's allegations&nbsp;about differential treatment and division in the governing body.&nbsp;Schopman, who resigned from her post after women's team's failure to qualify for Paris Olympics, and Norman recently made heads turn with their serious claims.

Now, the&nbsp;Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General, Bhola Nath Singh, have&nbsp;rubbished all allegations. "Recently there have been statements by outgoing officials published in the media, claiming that there are divisions within the organisation. This is not correct. We remain united in working together, and as always in the best interest of the sport."

"The Federation has treated the teams and all players equally with equal benefits and training facilities, including cash awards and monetary recognition that is at-par and is purely based on performance. We have built our ethos around equity and equal opportunities right from the grassroots levels across states as well as on a national level."

"We now seek the ongoing support of ardent hockey fans to continue to back what is important - the teams and the players like they have always done in this important year. And we look forward to keep our entire focus on the task at hand," read the statement.

Norman explained, "Absolutely, it was getting tough to deliver in the fight between two factions. The environment was becoming suffocating. There are two factions in Hockey India. There is (President) Dilip Tirkey and I and there is (Secretary) Bholanath Singh, (Executive Director) Cdr. R K Srivastava and (Treasurer) Sekar J Manoharan."

Schopman,&nbsp;who secured a gold medal with her national side&nbsp;in&nbsp;Beijing Olympics, took over from&nbsp;Marijne after the latter declined an extension offer. She served as the analytical coach for the women's hockey team in early 2020 but got elevated as the head coach following Tokyo Games.

The former Netherlands player pointed out, "Even when I was the assistant coach, some people wouldn't even look at me or wouldn't acknowledge me or wouldn't respond and then you become the chief coach and all of a sudden, people are interested in you. I struggled a lot with that. That is one thing."

Schopman has revealed that&nbsp;she is undecided&nbsp;on whether to stay on as the head coach. However, she was quick to point out that&nbsp;players want her to carry on and guide them.

"I'm going to reflect, 'did I do a good enough job, yes or no?'. I need to ask that myself. I have spoken to the players a little. I appreciate their opinion. They are the ones in charge.
