National Sports Day 2024: Every year, National Sports Day is celebrated in India, to honour the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players in history. Also known as the “Wizard of Hockey,” he made significant contributions to Hockey, the national sport of India. He brought immense pride to the nation.

Major Dhyan Chand started his career as a hockey player in 1926 and played till 1948. He played an instrumental role in helping India win its first Olympic gold medals at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Summer Olympics.

National Sports Day 2024: Date

Major Dhyan Chand is a legendary hockey player and is one of India’s most celebrated athletes. He was born on 29 August 1905, and to honour his significant contributions to the Indian national sport, Hockey. The government of India, established the National Sports Day in 2012, marking his birth anniversary, and decided to celebrate it annually. This year, the day is observed on 29 August, Thursday.

National Sports Day 2024: Significance

National Sports Day serves as a platform, highlighting the importance of building discipline, teamwork, and national pride. Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy continues to motivate athletes, and even the government of India launched various sports schemes on this day. In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Khelo India scheme on National Sports Day.

The National Sports Day also recognises the achievements of Indian athletes and celebrates their contributions. The President of India presents the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, one of the most prestigious recognition in sports. It represents the pinnacle of sporting recognition in India.

Who is Major Dhyan Chand?

Dhyan Chand was a prominent hockey player in India's pre-independence period. He played a significant role in India’s first hat-trick of winning gold medals at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Summer Olympics.

He is also known as ‘Hockey Wizard’ because of his understanding of the game and became one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He was also honoured with Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award.

Today, on National Sports Day 2024, and Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya offered floral tributes at the statue of Major Dhyan Chand.
