India vs New Zealand live streaming: When and where to watch FIH Hockey World Cup 2022 clash in India?

The Indian Women`s Hockey Team held China to a 1-1 draw in their second pool B match here at the FIH Women`s Hockey World Cup Spain and Netherlands 2022 on Tuesday. Goals were scored by Jiali Zheng (26`) of China and Vandana Katariya (45`) of India. In their first match on Sunday, India had held England to a 1-1 draw where it was Vandana who had scored for the team while China too had drawn 2-2 against New Zealand.

It was a tense start to the match with the Chinese dominating the ball possession with a structured attack in the initial minutes of the game but once India shook off their nerves, they made some lethal circle penetrations that could have earned them an early lead. One such opportunity came in the 6th minute when Sharmila Devi and Navneet Kaur worked in tandem to take a shot on goal. But Navneet`s strike was blocked by a strong Chinese defence.

After ending the first quarter in a stalemate, India penetrated the Chinese defence on a number of occasions in the second quarter. In the 23rd minute, a PC awarded to India was contested and the referral went in favour of China. It was a shot taken by Vandana from the top of the D which bounced off Jyoti`s body into the goal, after she missed getting a deflection thus resulting in the referral going against India. But only seconds later, India found the foot of the Chinese defender winning their first PC of the match. But this chance went amiss too as Gurjit Kaur`s powerful drag-flick was blocked away by the Chinese goalie Liu Ping. China, however, did not falter when their attackers created a sublime variation that resulted in a goal. It was Jiali Zheng who put the ball past India`s experienced goalkeeper Savita in the 26th minute.

Meanwhile, India continued to work some impressive formations in their attack, earning the team another PC in the 27th minute but Monika who took the shot could not make much of the chance and the second quarter ended with China leading 1-0. Both teams displayed attacking hockey coupled with speed and patience in their efforts. The third quarter saw China fetching their first PC of the match but could not make much of it with Gu Bingfeng`s drag going wide. India, who won a couple of PCs in this quarter remained calm in their pursuit of a goal. Their wait finally ended in the 45th minute when the team converted from their 5th PC of the match.

It was the experienced striker Vandana Katariya, who once again was the cynosure of India`s PC attack. She picked up a brilliant deflection off Gurjit`s fiercely-struck drag-flick sending the ball flying past the Chinese goalie. This match too like the previous one India battled against England went down to the wire. India showed more urgency to convert a goal in the final quarter and they also defended well to keep the pressure on their opponents. They even warded off danger in the 56th minute when they conceded a PC, but they did well with the line defence to clear the ball.

Both teams contested for the ball in the dying minutes of the game, bringing the viewers to the edge of their seats. But with seconds ticking away, neither could successfully score despite China calling for a video referral asking for a PC on the hooter. With this match too ending in a stalemate, India will hunt for a win in their last round-robin league match on Thursday. On July 7, India will take on New Zealand in their third pool B match at 2300 hrs IST.

Covid-19 scare in Indian men's hockey camp as two players, three support staff members test positive

In a shocking development, Birendra Lakra -- India's 32-year-old hockey player -- has found himself in a huge controversy. The Olympian, who had announced his international retirement in September last year before taking it back, has been accused of playing a role in the death of his friend. The allegations were levelled at the former hockey player by the kin of the late 28-year-old man.

For the unversed, the body of the man was found hanging in an apartment in Bhubaneswar early this year, on February 28, shortly after he reached the city from Sundargarh. He was brought dead at a hospital in the state capital.

After his death, the man's father claimed that he suspected the involvement of Birendra and a woman named Manjeet Tete. "He did not give any coherent detail... My son was reportedly found dead in the flat in Infocity area at around 10 am shortly after his arrival there. Only Lakra and the woman named Manjeet Tete were present in the flat... The woman first saw my son hanging and brought him down. This story and the circumstances in which my son was found dead raise serious doubts,” he alleged.

Following the serious allegations imposed on him, Birendra has not shared his response. It will be interesting to see how he reacts in public to the serious charges. The veteran player was part of India's recent success in the just-concluded Asia Cup, where he led the national side to the elusive bronze medal. The defender was also part of India's historic run in Tokyo 2020, where they ended at the third position.

With the championship title at stake, Netherlands pulled off a narrow 2-1 win against a fighting Indian men`s team here in the FIH Hockey Men`s Pro League encounter on Sunday. This win saw the hosts claim the FIH Hockey Pro League title while India ended their campaign with a third-place finish. Abhishek (1`) was the lone goal scorer for India while Jip Janssen (7`) and Jorrit Croon (45`) scored for the hosts. India had gotten off to a rollicking start with a goal in the opening minute of the match through Abhishek who made a brave foray into the striking circle and took a valiant shot on goal. Although the early 1-0 lead by India put the Dutch side on the back foot, they did not do anything out of the order under pressure but instead built on their attack which helped them win PCs. Jip Janssen taking the penalty corner was on target with a fiercely struck drag-flick that went past India`s experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh at a blistering pace.

Only a minute into the second quarter India created a brilliant opportunity when Harmanpreet Singh made a long pass to forward Gujrant Singh who took a fine shot on goal. But a stick tackle by Dutch defender saw India being awarded a penalty stroke. However, the chance was lost with Pirmin Blaak displaying impeccable skills to stop Harmanpreet`s flick aimed at the top right pocket. Only minutes later, Dutch launched a fine attack that saw them create a PC but an alert Sreejesh continued to impress with excellent saves. With scores tied at 1-1 when the teams went into the half-time break, it was an even battle in the following two quarters where both teams worked their strategies to create scoring opportunities. Though in the first half, the Dutch dominated with ball possession and circle entries, India upped the pressure in the third and fourth quarter with an improvised ball possession and circle penetration, creating a number of opportunities through PCs as well as field-goal chances. However, they couldn`t get clear shots that could beat the Dutch defence.

Meanwhile, the hosts did not fumble in their attack as they converted from a PC in the 45th minute. A well-worked set-piece saw Jip flick the ball to the left flak which was perfectly deflected by Croon fetching that much-needed 2-1 lead.

Backed by the home support, Netherlands defended the score till the final hooter, thus clinching the championship with two more matches to be played against Spain. India, on the other hand, ended their campaign with 30 points on the table and Belgium have ended their campaign finishing second on the pool table.

FIH Hockey Pro League: Netherlands beat India 2-1 to clinch maiden title

An incredible fightback saw India win a point from a thrilling 2-2 draw against the hosts Netherlands in the regulation time of the FIH Hockey Pro League match here on Saturday. It was goals by Dilpreet Singh (22`) and Harmanpreet Singh`s (60+) that helped India equalize on both occasions. However, the hosts added on bonus points from a 4-1 shootout win with their experienced goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak keeping the Indian attackers at bay.

Earlier in the game, the Netherlands backed by a boisterous home crowd got off to a flying start creating two excellent shots on goal within two minutes of the start of the match. But luckily for India, both shots were off target.

Around the 5th minute, India launched an ambitious attack through Hardik Singh who cut into the circle from the top, attempting to take a shot on goal but the Dutch goalie Pirmin Blaak cleared the ball. It was, however, the Netherlands who fetched the first goal of the match when Derck de Vilder beat Indian defender Varun Kumar to find Tijmen Reyenga.

With no defender near him, Reyenga (10`) took his time to take a successful shot past experienced India custodian Sreejesh to take a 1-0 lead. Only seconds later, India fought back with Mandeep Singh creating a fine opportunity with a tactically earned PC.

While Harmanpreet Singh`s first shot was blocked, and a retake was awarded, a goal by Mandeep Singh off a rebound from the drag-flick in the second attempt was disallowed by the umpire on account of dangerous play. It continued to be an action-packed first quarter with India building on the intensity in their attack.

This time, it was Abhishek challenging Blaak at the goal post, resulting in a PC but Jugraj Singh`s flick was well-defended well by Blaak. With the Netherlands leading 1-0, Sreejesh`s inspired form was put to test once again in the second quarter when the hosts attacked the Indian post with back-to-back shots on goal through youngster Koen Bijen and Jorrit Croon, but an alert Sreejesh kept them at bay.

Meanwhile, Indian attackers broke the deadlock when a free-hit taken by Varun Kumar was cleverly passed to Dilpreet Singh, positioned perfectly inside the circle who just angled the deflection into the Netherlands` post. With the scores levelled, India mounted pressure in the Dutch half but couldn`t score from it.

Meanwhile in the other Super 4 league match, South Korea defeated Japan 3-1 to move to four points. South Korea had earlier drawn 2-2 against Malaysia in their first match.

On the day, Malaysia started brightly and put the Indian defence under sustain pressure.

Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera was brought to action in the sixth minute when he made a fine save to deny Muhammad Hassan's reverse hit.

Malaysia earned a penalty corner from the resultant move but Karkera positioned himself perfectly to keep out Faizal Saari's try.

It was all Malaysia in the first quarter as the Indian team failed to get a single shot on target.
Malaysia's consistent pressure secured them another penalty corner in the 12th minute and this time

Rahim beat Karkera with a powerful low flick to the right bottom corner of the board.

The Indians upped their game in the second quarter and created a few chances but that didn't result in a goal.

India secured another short corner in the third quarter but Malaysian goalkeeper Hafizuddin Othman came to his side's rescue.

The 'Men in Blue' created a few more chances in the third quarter but lacked the decisive touch in the attacking third.

India secured back-to-back penalty corners in the 49th minute but Dipsan Tirkey failed to get past Haifizuddin, who was a rock under Malaysian post.

India drew level in the 53rd minute, courtesy Pawan Rajbhar's pivotal presence in the mid-field, where he snatched the ball from an opposition player and then selflessly set it up for Sunil, who scored with a fierce shot from an acute angle.

Two minutes later, India took the lead for the first time in the match when Nilam Sanjeep converted a penalty corner.

But India's joy was shortlived as Malaysia drew level a minute later, courtesy Rahim's well deserved hat-trick.

Asia Cup hockey: India beat Japan 2-1 in first Super 4 league match, avenge pool loss

A new-look Indian team paid for its inexperience and profligacy with Asian champions Japan soundly thrashing them 5-2 in a group A league match of the men's Asia Cup hockey championship here on Tuesday. Having drawn against Pakistan in the opening game, India's chances after this defeat will be badly dented as even a big win against Indonesia in the last game might not be enough for qualification to the knock-out stages.

Ken Nagayoshi, Kosei Kawabe (twice), Ryomi Ooka and Koji Yamasaki scored for Japan while Pawan Rajbhar and Uttam Singh found the target for the Indians. However, the younger crop of players didn't measure up against the Japanese, who looked more organised and hit India repeatedly on the counters.

The two seniors -- Birendra Lakra and SV Sunil -- looked well past their prime and couldn't make any tangible difference with their performances.

"First two quarters were very tough because we didn't get into any rhythm. We got better in the last two quarters but didn't create many chances," said Lakra, the India captain.

"In the final quarter, we lost our defensive structure and conceded a couple of goals. Also, we lost two men and that had an effect," Lakra added.

India could have gone ahead in the fifth minute of the first half itself when 20-year-old Karthi Selvam kept an inch perfect cross from wide left for veteran SV Sunil, who was inches short of laying his stick for a tap-in. The first quarter was all about trying to get control of the midfield with rookie Indian players losing a lot of possession during the phase of play.

But, to their delight, the Japanese also failed to make too many inroads save one penalty corner, which was well-saved by a diving Indian custodian Suraj Karkera. However, in the second quarter central midfielder Raj Kumar took a crack at goal from the edge of the striking circle, which was saved by Japan goalie Koji Yamasaki and, to India's horror, the ball found Sunil's boots as he was lurking inside the 'D'.

But India suddenly fizzled out in the second quarter after that initial spark, even as the Japanese upped their ante and earned two more penalty corners -- the first of which found drag-flicker Yoshiki Kirishita off the mark as his powerful drag-flick sailed well over the cross-piece.

However, in the 24th minute, Ken Nagayoshi converted the penalty corner with a powerful angular drive that beat a diving Suraj all ends up. There came a chance of an equaliser when Nilam Sanjeep Xess' assist found Raj Kumar, whose reverse hit was saved by the keeper.

The problem with the inexperienced outfit was its propensity to attack primarily down the middle-third instead of spreading the game onto the wide flanks. The ageing Sunil's poor outing also didn't help the Indians much as the team seemed to lack the art of playing the pressing game to earn the penalty corners unlike the Japanese, who were brilliant on the counter during the last two quarters of the game.

It was in the 40th minute Japan made it 2-0 in a counter-attack with Kosei Kawabi snatching the ball from the Indian midfield and sprinting down the right wing running left-back Dipsan Tirkey ragged with his speed.

It was a spectacular goal with Kawabi having his back towards the Indian goal with his markers Dipsan and Nilam closing in on him. With a body feint, Kawabi wrong-footed goalkeeper Suraj and then smashed it home from an acute angle.

India found something going their way in the dying moments of the third quarter when veteran Birendra Lakra kept a powerful assist inside the striking circle melee and the big-bodied centre forward Pawan Rajbhar was in the right place to lay his stick for a perfect deflection that found the top corner of the net.

The final quarter once again saw the Indians going all out and conceding a goal against the run of play in the 49th minute. With all but one players on the overlap, Ryosei Kato got a cross-field pass on the wide right and he cut inside with goalkeeper Suraj at his mercy, and Ryomo Ooka waiting for an open goal. Kato passed it to Ooka, who put it gleefully to make it 3-1.

However, India equalised with the very next move when Rajbhar sent a cross from right and forward Uttam Singh tapped it in from close range to make it 2-3.

But there was more bad luck for India as they suddenly lost the numerical advantage with temporary suspensions of Rajbhar and Karthi.

The nine versus eleven became a lopsided contest as Japan repeatedly used the right flank to launch their attack. Koji Yamasaki got his goal in the 54th minute with a touch-in after none of the Indian defenders cared to intercept a cross from the wide right.

The Indian resistance had ended and the fifth goal was the final nail in the coffin -- Kawabe slotting home in the 56th minute after his first shot rebounded off the goalkeeper.

India's PR Sreejesh wins The World Games Athlete of the Year 2021 award

The Indian women`s team made a great impact on its FIH Pro League debut on Monday, beating China 7-1 in a match played at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex here.

The Indian team, which has been invited to participate in this year`s FIH Pro League edition following the withdrawal of Australia and New Zealand, came up with a brilliant performance to get the better of the Chinese in the match played after the Women`s Asia Cup in which Savita`s team had bagged a bronze medal, beating the same opponents 2-0.

Relentless, talented and speedy; India`s entry into the FIH Hockey Pro League was marked by a win that showed that Janneke Schopman and her team are more than ready for the challenges ahead in FIH Hockey Pro League.

It was a day of firsts in Muscat, Oman as the city hosted its first FIH Hockey Pro League match. The hockey-mad city had just played host to the 2022 Women`s Asia Cup and now two of the teams that had competed in that competition -- India (FIH World Ranking:9) and China (WR:13) - came head-to-head in the opening FIH Hockey Pro League match of 2022.

For the Indian women, this was their first match in the FIH Hockey Pro League, following the withdrawal of Australia and New Zealand from the competition because of Covid-related travel restrictions. Ahead of the tournament head coach Janneke Schopman had spoken of the great opportunity the FIH Hockey Pro League offered her team, with the chance of regular, high-quality competition. And on Monday, the Indians showed they were ready for bigger challenges ahead in the event.

In another first for India as three goals were scored from penalty strokes, the most penalty strokes to be awarded and converted in a Hockey Pro League match.

India certainly hit the ground running. Two goals in the opening quarter were ample proof that the team were up for this challenge. In the fifth minute, Navneet Kaur smashed a shot past Wu Surong to give her side the lead. Just seven minutes later, a great save by skipper and goalkeeper Savita from a China penalty corner was turned to India`s advantage and the counterattack allowed Neha to double the lead.

For the first 30 minutes of play, the fast-moving sequence of passes and a willingness on the part of the players to take on defenders meant India, who narrowly missed a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, were looking the stronger team.

In the second half, China began to raise their game to match the pace with which India had started the encounter. Unfortunately, China were unable to make the pressure count and India turned another counter-attack into a goal. This time it was Katariya Vandana who put the ball past Wu on the second attempt, after her first shot rebounded, a report on the FIH`s official website said.

Some slick movements and speedy passing saw China finally rewarded. The ball was moved swiftly up the pitch and Deng Xue was able to steer the ball goalwards and past Etimarpu Rajani, who had replaced Savita in the India goal.

Any hope China had that this goal might change the course of the game was dismissed when India won a penalty stroke in the 47th minute. Former captain Sushila Chanu made no mistake as she stepped up and put the ball into the corner of the China goal, the report said.

India`s next goal came from the stick of forward Sharmila Devi. A series of passes left the China defence stranded and Sharmila was able to turn the ball into the goal for India`s fifth goal.

A second penalty stroke was won by the India attack as the Chinese defence were just unable to get out of the way of the nimble stick work of Lalremsiami. Gurjit Kaur stepped up to calmly and precisely send the ball home.

With eight minutes left Sushila scored her second penalty stroke of the game making the final score 7-1.

Sharmila Devi was adjudged as Player of the Match. On receiving her award, the striker said: "I am very happy with that performance. We played very well and we are very excited to be playing in the FIH Hockey Pro league for the first time."

Read Also | Winter Olympics 2022: COVID-19 cases rise among Olympic athletes, personnel arrive in Beijing For the Indian women, this was their first match in the FIH Hockey Pro League, following the withdrawal of Australia and New Zealand from the competition because of Covid-related travel restrictions. Manpreet Singh to lead 20-member team in Men's Pro League matches in South Africa

Two-time Olympic medallist and Padma Shri award winner Charanjit Singh passed away on Thursday in Una district, Himachal Pradesh, due to age-related complications. He was 92. The Arjuna Award winner was part of India`s glorious days. A charismatic halfback, Charanjit Singh had led the Indian team to a historic gold medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, beating Pakistan in the final and was also part of the Indian team that won silver in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

Born on November 20, 1929, Charanjit Singh was an alumnus of Col. Brown Cambridge School, Dehradun and Punjab University. After his illustrious career in international hockey, he worked as Director of the Physical Education department at Himachal Pradesh University, in Shimla.

Hockey India on Thursday mourned the demise of hockey legend Charanjit Singh. When Hockey India had interviewed the legend in June 2021 for the Hockey India Flashback Series in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, he had fondly remembered the final against Pakistan during the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, the association said in a press release. He had nostalgically stated, "Both the teams were regarded among the strongest teams during that time, and we had a very challenging outing against them. Moreover, you know, how intense it becomes when you play against Pakistan that too in the final of the Olympics. The match was also interrupted briefly to cool down the tempers of both teams. I told my boys to focus on the game, rather than wasting time talking to them. We were tested hard but also showed great character, and won the match by a narrow 1-0 margin to return home with that historic Gold medal."

He had further remembered about the grand welcome they received upon returning to India wearing the coveted Gold medal around their necks. "Winning two medals for the country has been a moment of pride and honour for me. You know, after winning the Gold Medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, we were accorded a warm welcome on our arrival at the airport, a lot of fans had assembled, and it was a very special feeling for every one of us."

Condoling Charanjit Singh`s demise, Hockey India President Gyanendro Ningombam said, "It is a sad day for the hockey fraternity. Even in his old age, he would light up every time there were conversations about hockey and he could accurately recall every great moment he was part of India`s golden days of hockey. He was a legendary halfback who inspired an entire generation of players. He was a very cool-headed captain and he will forever be remembered for his incredible skills on the field and for his humility off the field. On behalf of Hockey India, I expressed my deepest condolences to his family."

Asian Champions Trophy: India net nine goals past Bangladesh in a dominating display

India was denied a winning start to their campaign at the Men`s Asian Champions Trophy with a spirited Korean team holding the defending champions to a thrilling 2-2 draw here at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium. For India, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (3`) and Harmanpreet Singh (33`) scored while Jonghyun Jang (42`) and Kim Hyeongjin (46`) scored in Korea`s resurgence. Although it was India who dominated the proceedings in the first and second quarter with better ball possession (58 per cent) and a higher number of circle penetrations (14 for India and 8 for Korea), the Korean side rallied on a strong defensive structure in the third and fourth quarter to deny any opportunity for India to score.

After Lalit put India ahead early in the game with a fine field goal, converted brilliantly after controlling the ball upon receiving an aerial pass in the attacking circle, India created another fine opportunity in the second quarter through Akashdeep Singh`s tomahawk from the left top of the circle. But a highly vigilant Korean goalie Kim Jaehyeon made a fine save to keep India from extending the lead. He came up with another brilliant save when India won their first PC of the match only minutes before the end of the second quarter. It was Varun Kumar who took the shot which rebounded off Kim`s pads but newcomer Mandeep Mor`s attempt off the rebound too was well saved by the Korean goalie.

After the ten-minute half-time break, India extended their lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute with a fiercely struck penalty corner converted by Harmanpreet Singh. It was India`s third take of the PC after the first two were blocked by Korea`s first rusher. Even though India created several chances in the following minutes, they could not find success even as Korea had successfully begun to make inroads into India`s circle. Their tactic to force India to make infringements in defence worked, as India conceded the first PC of the match in the 42nd minute. After the two retakes, Jonghyun Jang successfully put the ball past India`s goalie Krishan Pathak. This goal boosted the Korean attack, which had seemed rather listless in the first two quarters. They continued to challenge the Indian defence in the final quarter and even found success in the 46th minute when Kim Hyeongjin converted a fine field goal which could not be stopped by India`s young keeper Suraj Karkera. The final few minutes saw India create PCs but could not convert, thus settling for a 2-2 draw.

Incidentally, India had drawn against Korea 1-1 at the same venue in 2017 during their successful campaign at the Hero Asia Cup. Korea was the only team India had not beaten in that victorious outing. Post-match, Skipper Manpreet Singh expressed his disappointment but at the same time was confident the team would bounce back from this draw. "Korea were really good today with their defence and their goalkeeper was quite outstanding. We expected them to give us a hard time and hence it was important we started well. But we couldn`t keep up that momentum going into the third and fourth quarter. Nonetheless, this was the first match of the tournament and we surely will bounce back tomorrow against Bangladesh," stated the India Captain. On Wednesday, India will take on Bangladesh.

Domene converted three penalty corners in the 10th, 25th and 50th minute, while Franco Agoistini (60th) scored a field goal just seconds from the final hooter to hand Argentina their second title.

Julius Hayner (36th) and Mas Pfandt (47th) were the goal getters for Germany.

The Argentines were by far the better side on display in the first quarter as they dominated the game by pressing hard on the German defence.

As has been their game, the Germans sat back and waited for counterattacks.

But Germany's ploy backfired as Argentina took the lead in the 10th minute through Domene from a penalty corner.

Argentina doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Domene once again found the back of the net from a penalty corner to go into half time leading 2-0.

But the Germans came out a completely different side after the change of ends and and managed to reduce the margin in the 36th minute through a field strike by Hayner.

Trailing by a goal and with just 15 minutes remaining, the Germans continued to attack and drew level in 47th minute when Pfandt scored from a set piece.

But it was not to be Germany's day as Domene struck again from a set piece in the 50th minute before Agostini scored from a field effort just at the stroke of the final hooter to shatter Germany's seventh title hopes.
