When one arrives at the Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, they are sure to be welcomed by beautiful sand art that depicts the mythologically-significant monuments of the erstwhile state. This time, not only will the visitors traveling for the most-awaited FIH Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela be treated to sand sculpture at the airport, but one can also witness the world's largest hockey sculpture erected on the banks of the Mahanadi river at Cuttack, where the 'celebration' event is scheduled for on 11 January to mark the opening of the mega hockey event starting 13th January.

Being in news for making globally popular sand art, Sudarshan Pattnaik this time chose to create a 105-feet long hockey stick, using 5000 hockey balls. The sand artist used over five tonnes of sand for the sculpture which also showcases the newly built Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. Having taken two days to complete this incredible art installation, Sudarshan Pattnaik has once again showcased the passion Odisha has for the national sport. He said, "There is a festive atmosphere in every village you travel to in Odisha because of the World Cup. It is a very special event for the people of Odisha and there are celebrations everywhere. To welcome everyone to this beautiful state, we wanted to create something unique this time, that's why we thought of using hockey balls and create this installation."

It took Sudarshan and his team of 15 students two full days to complete the installation and it will be up for display all of 11th January when thousands will throng the Barabati Stadium to catch a glimpse of Bollywood stars who will perform during the opening ceremony. "During the previous World Cup, we had installed sand art at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium and the art work depicted the major monuments of Odisha like Konark. This time we have used the installation to welcome all the 16 participating teams to Odisha and we have created 16 national flags in the installation," added an elated Pattnaik about this unique creation.

The sand artist has also been awarded Padma Shri in 2014, for his participation in a globally renowned sand art competition. Till now, Sudarshan Pattnaik has participated in more than 60 international sand art championships as well as festivals. He has not only represented India in such competitions but also won several prizes for the country. It is worth noting that the artist uses his creative expression to spread a social message every time. He also holds the Guinness Record (2017) for building the tallest sand castle at 48 feet.

WC 2023: Hockey India announces prize money for Harmanpreet Singh-led team on podium finish

The year 2022 has seen quite a few marquee tournaments taking place, such as the T20 World Cup and FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The new year is set to start in a few days and it will begin with a bang for all sports lovers. The forthcoming Hockey WC will take place from January 13-29 in the cities of Bhubaneshwar and Rourkela in Odisha as all the top teams will fight it out for the coveted title. Belgium is the defending champions, having beaten the Netherlands in the 2018 finale by 3-2 in the penalty shootout (after the match ended in a 0-0 stalemate).

Ahead of the showpiece event's commencement, here are the four groups comprising four sides each. The groups are as follows.

Pool A:- Australia, South Africa, France, Argentina
Pool B:- Belgium, Japan, Korea, Germany
Pool C:- Netherlands, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand
Pool D:- India, Wales, Spain, England

Thus, Harmanpreet Singh-led India is in a tricky group D, also comprising England, Spain and Wales. It is to be noted that the top four teams from each group will progress to the next stage and occupy the first four places in the quarter-final. However, the next four sides who will feature in the last eight will be determined by crossover matches between the second and third-placed teams from every group.

A win in the pool stage will give every side two points whereas they will settle for a point in case of a draw. If two sides find themselves tied on multiple counts, then the scenario is very interesting. In this case, a tie-breaker rule will come into play to reveal the team ranking on the group stage.

For instance, if two teams are tied on equal points, then the team with more victories in the group stage will achieve the higher rank. In case if that doesn't help, then the goal difference -- i.e. the difference between the number of goals scored and the number of goals conceded -- will be taken into consideration. If that also doesn't lead to a result, then the team with the most number of goals scored will gain a higher rank. If that too doesn't separate the two sides tied, then the head-to-head result between them will achieve the higher rank.

In the last edition, in 2018, India ended their run in the quarter-finals. After Tokyo 2020 success, where they finished with a bronze medal, the Men in Blue will be confident to go the distance and end with the coveted title.

Hockey India announces 18-man Team India squad for World Cup 2023

Former India captain Dilip Tirkey on Friday became Hockey India's first player-president after his unopposed election to the top post as yet another sports person has grabbed the top job in a National Sports Federation (NSF). Hockey India elections were scheduled to be held on October 1 but the results were declared in advance as there were no contestants for any post. Tirkey, who filed his nomination as President of Hockey Odisha, was elected after Uttar Pradesh Hockey chief Rakesh Katyal and Hockey Jharkhand's Bhola Nath Singh withdrew their nominations on Friday.

Tirkey, 44, is the latest addition to the list of players who have grabbed the top job in a sports body. Recently, former player Kalyan Chaubey became the All India Football Federation (AIFF) boss.

Tirkey said sports persons can contribute as administrators too. "I believe former players should come into sports administration because they know where to focus. Like Sourav Ganguly was in the CAB first and then went to BCCI and is performing brilliantly," Tirkey told PTI-Bhasha.

"I am happy that Hockey India has also elected a former player like me as its president for the first time. Players go through many phases in their career and they get better experience," the former full back added.

Adille Sumariwalla, who is also a former player, is president of Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Bhola Nath has been elected unopposed as secretary general. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has approved Tirkey and his team's appointments. In a letter, the FIH said that when the number of contesting candidates for any post is equal to or less than the number of posts, they shall be deemed to have been elected unopposed as per election by-laws on the Hockey India website.

"Therefore, we are pleased to observe that the Executive Board of Hockey India stands elected as has been put on the website of Hockey India and that the posts election was unanimous for all posts," it said.

The game's governing body appreciated the efforts of the three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA), which included Justice Anil R Dave, SY Quraishi and Zafar Iqbal, for smoothly conducting the election process. "We are delighted that the election process has been completed and a democratic body is now in place. We extend our congratulations to Dr Dilip Tirkey, Bhola Nath Singh and Sekar J Manoharan and look forward to working with them closely," it added.

Tirkey, who is the country's most capped player with 412 international caps, said there is a need to prepare the next generation of players.

"There is a need for a specific training programme for junior players to prepare the next generation of drag-flickers and goalkeepers and the focus will also be on team fitness," he said. "We have seen how important the role of our drag flicker and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was in the Olympics, but after that the next generation players will also have to be produced."

He also said that there is also a plan to restart the Hockey League. "We also have plans to restart the hockey league. It will be discussed with the committee and after discussion with the executive board it will be taken forward." Bhola Nath said he decided to withdraw his nomination for the president's post to enable a great player like Tirkey to take up the reigns.

"I withdrew after due consultation with Dilip Tirkey. He is a legend and we have decided to work jointly for the good of Indian hockey. Our aim is to see India win the Olympic gold again," Bhola Nath told PTI. "We will also work towards the development of the game at the grassroot level and make domestic hockey stronger."

The other elected members of Hockey India are Asima Ali (vice president) of Hockey Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka's SVS Subramanya Gupta (vice president), Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu's Sekar J Manoharan (treasurer), Hockey Rajasthan's Arti Singh (joint secretary) and Hockey Haryana's Sunil Malik (joint secretary). The five executive board members are Arun Kumar Sarswat (Hockey Rajasthan), Asrita Lakra (Hockey Jharkhand), Gurpreet Kaur (Delhi Hockey), V Sunil Kumar (Kerala Hockey) and Tapan Kumar Das (Assam Hockey).

The Indian hockey teams, which include both men's and women's teams. have issued a strong statement against their former head coach Sjoerd Marijne who has made some serious allegations against the players in his newly launched book titled "Will Power: The Inside Story of the Incredible Turnaround in Indian Women's Hockey".

"We have seen in the press today some disturbing allegations being made by the erstwhile Chief Coach of our teams, Sjoerd Marijne. We have come together to state our deep disappointment in his exploitation of our personal information and false accusations. He has used his time of coaching us for commercial gain to sell his book at the cost of our reputations. This is a complete breach of trust and his duty of care as a coach. It also leads to all Indian athletes like us to feel vulnerable in such situations," said the joint written statement of both men's and women's hockey teams.

The book highlights the experiences of Sjoerd Marijne when he was appointed the Chief Coach of the Indian women's Hockey Team in 2017. Marijne was appointed the chief coach of the Indian women's Hockey Team in 2017 and later, he was given charge of the Men's Hockey Team in September 2017.

After a memorable run in Tokyo Olympics last year, the Indian contingent roared and inspired once again in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 edition in Birmingham. The entire Team India squad consisted of several medal contenders such as PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led Indian men's hockey team, Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's cricket team, Mirabai Chanu, Sharath Kamal, Bajrang Punia-starrer wrestling camp.

While many big names and strong medal contenders didn't disappoint, some relatively-unknown players and sporting stars made a mark as well. I bet not many would've googled lawn bowls before the women's team attained gold whereas the men's settled for silver. Thus, there were quite a few positives for India as the star-studded squad kept the national flag flying high throughout the tournament. Here's reliving top five team or individual performances at the Games:

PV Sindhu, the superstar shuttler, won her maiden gold at the Games defeating Canada's Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13 to complete a CWG set (gold, silver and bronze).

2) Wrestlers' dominance: Among all sports, wrestling remained the most most successful for Team India at CWG 2022 with as many as 12 medals. For the unversed, all the dozen wrestlers had returned with medals in Gold Coast 2018 and they managed to replicate the same this time around as well.

The likes of Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik won a gold medal each whereas the likes of Pooja Sihag, Mohit Grewal, Naveen Sihag, Divya Kakran also returned as CWG 2022 medal winners.

The women’s fours team -- comprising Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Rupa Rani -- beat South Africa in the final to help India win its maiden gold and first-ever medal at the Games in lawn bowls.

The men's team having the likes of Sunil Bahadur, Navneet Singh, Chandan Kumar Singh and Dinesh Kumar clinched the silver medal after losing to Northern Ireland. India did not disappoint and returned with a staggering 61 medals -- 22 gold, 16 silver, 23 bronze to end at the fourth position with Australia, England and Canada finishing at the first, second and third positions respectively. India's nemesis Australia denied the women's cricket team and the men's hockey team of winning a gold medal each as both sides settled for a second-spot finish. Meanwhile, India's 2018 medal-tally was 66 (26 gold medals, 20 silver medals, and 20 bronze medals) and, thus, the country ended with five fewer medals with shooting -- which was one of the strongest disciplines for the contingent in 2018 -- not being part of CWG'22. In addition, Neeraj Chopra's absence hurt the Indian team. Given his form, he was very likely to end with gold or silver.

Savia Punia-led Indian women's hockey team lost to Australia in the penalty shootout in the CWG 2022 semi-finals, due to clock controversy. CWG'22: Heartwarming! Savita-led India get guard of honour from Manpreet & Co. after bronze win - WATCH

While it has been raining medals for the Indian contingent on the last day of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 edition, in Birmingham, on Monday (August 08), the Manpreet Singh-led Indian men's hockey team faltered in the final encounter to lose to Australia by a whopping 7-0 margin.

Coming into this contest on the back of an unbeaten streak so far in the competition, India were expected to give a tough fight to the Australians. However, nothing clicked for the Men in Blue as they were trailing 2-0 in the first quarter and the lead extended to 5-0 at halftime. The writing was always on the wall as India were only playing the catchup game and never looked to threaten the Aussies.

Goals from Blake Govers, Tom Wickham, Fynn Ogilvie along with braces from Nathan Ephraums and Jacob Anderson helped Australia thump India. It could've been more embarrassing for India had PR Sreejesh not saved a few towards the end of the match. The Indian women's hockey team failed to impress in its first real test of the Commonwealth Games, going down 1-3 to England in a Pool A match here on Tuesday. England found an early goal after Giselle Ansley (3rd minute) got a deflection off a penalty corner into the Indian goal. Tess Howard made it 2-0 in the third quarter (40th), before Hannah Martin scored the team's third in the fourth and final quarter (53rd).

With few seconds to go for the final hooter, India scored a consolation goal through Vandana Katariya (60th), via a deflection off a penalty corner. The home team started on a strong note, making quick moves and dominating possession to put pressure on India.

As early as the second minute of the match, England were awarded a penalty corner. They could not make that count, but capitalised on the next one which they got soon after the first. Emboldened by an early goal, England continued to dominate possession while looking to put pressure on the tourists with back-to-back attempts from close range.

India defended in numbers, but the midfield looked a bit rusty and under the pump amid England's relentlessness attack at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash centre. The Indians regrouped after their first quarter sloppiness but failed to get the goals.

As the second quarter started, the Indians took a shot at opposition goal and looked to be aggressive. The second quarter ended in a stalemate with England holding on to the lead and India continuing with their quest for equaliser.

India did better in the second quarter, but they were struggling to go past Madeleine Hinch, who was in the middle of an excellent game before the referee blew the half time whistle.

That the Indians failed to find the net, despite their confidence and aggression, had a lot to do with England goalkeeper Hinch's performance. What also didn't help the Indians' cause were their sloppy play in the final third.

Even as India looked desperately for the equaliser, it was the home team that scored again, extending their lead and making it 2-0 in the third quarter. The second goal was a result of great teamwork from England as Hannah Martin provided a perfect assist to Tess Howard who deflected the ball into the Indian goal.

Team India is a strong squad comprising several star athletes, such as PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led India men's hockey team and Savita Punia's women's hockey line-up, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Manika Batra, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, etc. Neeraj Chopra, India's star javelin thrower, misses out due to a groin injury, nonetheless, there is enough firepower in the Indian contingent to impress in the upcoming event in Birmingham. Ahead of the opening ceremony, to be held at the Alexander Stadium, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Sindhu as the flagbearer, followed by Manpreet Singh. Being handed over such a huge responsibility, Sindhu said after the announcement on Wednesday (July 27), "It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer." CWG 2022: From PV Sindhu to Bajrang Punia! Full schedule of Indian athletes in showpiece event

On Wednesday (July 27), PV Sindhu added another feather to her illustrious hat as the 27-year-old superstar shuttler has been named as India's flagbearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to kick off in Birmingham on July 29.

It was touted to be a two-way battle between Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu for being the flagbearer before the shuttler was given the responsibility by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Neeraj, for the unversed, has bowed out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury which he sustained during his silver-medal win in the men's javelin throw final at the recently-concluded World Atheltics Championships.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday.

Sindhu was India's flagbearer at the last edition, in Gold Coast, where she returned with a silver medal in the women's singles. This time around, the two-time Olympic medallist will be eager to secure the elusive gold medal.

'It's a great honour' : Olympian PV Sindhu on becoming India's flagbearer at CWG 2022

The sporting fraternity is eagerly waiting for the commencement of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. The 2022 edition of the marquee event will be held in Birmingham and the Indian contingent comprises a plethora of promising athletes who are strong medal contenders.

While Neeraj Chopra, India's javelin thrower, bowed out of the quadrennial event due to a groin injury, on Tuesday (July 26), the countrymen can still pin their hopes on several players to shine and take India's medal tally higher in the overall rankings in the CWG'22 edition. Ahead of the upcoming tournament, Wion's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo spoke to India's men's hockey team's captain Manpreet Singh and head coach Graham Reid as the duo dwelled on Australia's dominance at the Games (having won six gold medals since the game's inclusion in 1998), India's fixtures and more:

How to stop a rampant Australia?

Graham Reid: Yeah look it certainly is (a challenge). It has an interesting history in CWG for the Aussies. Unfortunately, I was never able to play as a player but since then (in 1998), Australia have certainly dominated. Having said that, India have also done very well over the years and the job this time is to take it to the next level and win that elusive gold at CWG 2022.

Intimidated playing the Aussies?

Manpreet Singh: Doesn't matter. They are No. 1 but we need to give our best. If we give our best, definitely the result will favour us. You want to win the gold medal so you are more confident and fired up.

On Indian Olympic Association's Covid precaution (asking players to limit outings to prevent viral infection's spread)

Manpreet: We are doing the same thing (as we did in the Tokyo 2020). We heard some players got infected, hence, they were sent back. Hence, we are taking up precautions and following all protocols because even if one person gets infected, it will affect the team.

On India's opener vs Ghana, playing England next

Reid: It is our second game but we always have to take one game at a time. Ghana is the one we are focusing on at the moment. England are at home here. Playing the English is a tough ask but a great test for us to see where we are.

India are placed in Pool B along with England, Ghana, Canada and Wales and they open their campaign versus the nation from West Africa, on July 31. So far, India's best performance at CWG came when they ended as runners-up in the 2010 edition, in New Delhi, after being hammered 8-0 by the Aussies. Will they attain their maiden gold in the forthcoming CWG'22? Only time will tell...
