Former India captain Dilip Tirkey on Friday became Hockey India's first player-president after his unopposed election to the top post as yet another sports person has grabbed the top job in a National Sports Federation (NSF). Hockey India elections were scheduled to be held on October 1 but the results were declared in advance as there were no contestants for any post. Tirkey, who filed his nomination as President of Hockey Odisha, was elected after Uttar Pradesh Hockey chief Rakesh Katyal and Hockey Jharkhand's Bhola Nath Singh withdrew their nominations on Friday. 
 
Tirkey, 44, is the latest addition to the list of players who have grabbed the top job in a sports body. Recently, former player Kalyan Chaubey became the All India Football Federation (AIFF) boss.

Tirkey said&nbsp;sports persons can contribute as administrators too. "I believe former players should come into sports administration because they know where to focus. Like Sourav Ganguly was in the CAB first and then went to BCCI and is performing brilliantly," Tirkey told PTI-Bhasha. 
 
"I am happy that Hockey India has also elected a former player like me as its president for the first time. Players go through many phases in their career and they get better experience," the former full back added.

Adille Sumariwalla, who is also a former player, is president of Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Bhola Nath has been elected unopposed as secretary general. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has approved Tirkey and his team's appointments.&nbsp;In a letter, the FIH said that when the number of contesting candidates for any post is equal to or less than the number of posts, they shall be deemed to have been elected unopposed as per election by-laws on the Hockey India website. 
 
"Therefore, we are pleased to observe that the Executive Board of Hockey India stands elected as has been put on the website of Hockey India and that the posts election was unanimous for all posts," it said.

The game's governing body appreciated the efforts of the three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA), which included Justice Anil R Dave, SY Quraishi and Zafar Iqbal, for smoothly conducting the election process. "We are delighted that the election process has been completed and a democratic body is now in place. We extend our congratulations to Dr Dilip Tirkey, Bhola Nath Singh and Sekar J Manoharan and look forward to working with them closely," it added.

Tirkey, who is the country's most capped player with 412 international caps, said there is a need to prepare the next generation of players.&nbsp; 
 
"There is a need for a specific training programme for junior players to prepare the next generation of drag-flickers and goalkeepers and the focus will also be on team fitness," he said. "We have seen how important the role of our drag flicker and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was in the Olympics, but after that the next generation players will also have to be produced."

He also said that there is also a plan to restart the Hockey League. "We also have plans to restart the hockey league. It will be discussed with the committee and after discussion with the executive board it will be taken forward." Bhola Nath said he decided to withdraw his nomination for the president's post to enable a great player like Tirkey to take up the reigns.

"I withdrew after due consultation with Dilip Tirkey. He is a legend and we have decided to work jointly for the good of Indian hockey. Our aim is to see India win the Olympic gold again," Bhola Nath told PTI. "We will also work towards the development of the game at the grassroot level and make domestic hockey stronger."

The other elected members of Hockey India are Asima Ali (vice president) of Hockey Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Karnataka's SVS Subramanya Gupta (vice president), Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu's Sekar J Manoharan (treasurer), Hockey Rajasthan's Arti Singh (joint secretary) and Hockey Haryana's Sunil Malik (joint secretary). The Indian hockey teams, which include both men's and women's teams. have issued a strong statement against their former head coach Sjoerd Marijne who has made some serious allegations against the players in his newly launched book titled "Will Power: The Inside Story of the Incredible Turnaround in Indian Women's Hockey".

"We have seen in the press today some disturbing allegations being made by the erstwhile Chief Coach of our teams, Sjoerd Marijne. We have come together to state our deep disappointment in his exploitation of our personal information and false accusations. He has used his time of coaching us for commercial gain to sell his book at the cost of our reputations. This is a complete breach of trust and his duty of care as a coach. It also leads to all Indian athletes like us to feel vulnerable in such situations," said the joint written statement of both men's and women's hockey teams.

The book highlights the experiences of Sjoerd Marijne when he was appointed the Chief Coach of the Indian women's Hockey Team in 2017. Marijne was appointed the chief coach of the Indian women's Hockey Team in 2017 and later, he was given charge of the Men's Hockey Team in September 2017.

"We would like to collectively question Sjoerd Marijne, that if any of the claimed incidences took place under his watch there should be record of an allegation filed to Hockey India or the Sports Authority of India at the time. On checking with the authorities, we have found no such record of the complaint," the statement said.

According to Marijne in 2017 when the Dutchman was the coach of the Indian men's hockey team, he picked a young player to represent India at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold, he was pretty positive about his success as a player but the player failed to perform. Initially, the Dutchman thought that the player was under pressure to perform in a major tournament. But later he got to know that captain Manpreet Singh had allegedly told the player "to stop playing so well".

The Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 edition came to an end on Monday (August 08) in Birmingham. The just-concluded edition was keenly awaited after Team India's heroics in Tokyo Olympics last year. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Saturday apologised for the clock controversy that took place during the Indian women's team's semifinal loss against Australia at the Commonwealth Games, saying it would "thoroughly review" the incident.

Australia's Rosie Malone, who missed her first attempt during the penalty shootout, was gifted another chance as the eight second countdown on the scoreboard hadn't started. The forward did not miss the second time, putting her side in the lead.

Harmanpreet Singh and Akashdeep Singh scored a brace each as the Indian men's hockey team produced a completely dominating performance to rout Canada 8-0 in their third match and jump to the top of Pool B at the Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday.

Harmanpreet (7th, 54th minute) converted two penalty corners while Akashdeep Singh (38th, 60th) scored two fine field goals. Amit Rohidas (10th), Lalit Upadhyay (20th), Gurjant Singh (27th) and Mandeep Singh (58th) were the other goal scorers for India.

With the win, India jumped to the top of the pool ahead of England. The Indians play Wales in their final group match on Thursday. The Indians recovered from the jolt of a 4-4 draw against England after leading 3-0 at one stage in their last match as they came out with more purpose and completely dominated Canada in the first two quarters.

Three minutes later, defender Rohidas scored a brilliant field goal. He stormed into the circle with his silky stick work and slotted the ball home after receiving a defence-splitting long ball from Varun Kumar. Lalit slapped in a loose ball off a rebound after Varun Kumar's flick was kept away by Canadian goalkeeper Ethan McTavish to hand India a 3-0 lead. The Indian women's hockey team survived some anxious moments before beating lower-ranked Canada 3-2 in its must-win Pool A match to qualify for the semifinals of the Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday. The Indians looked in control of the match till the 22nd minute, having taken a 2-0 lead over their world no.15 opponents through goals from Salima Tete (3rd minute) and Navneet Kaur (22nd).

But the Canadians, then, produced a lion-hearted performance to level the scores through goals from Brienne Stairs (23rd) and Hannah Haughn (39th).

With England already assured of a semifinal berth from the pool with a 3-1 win over India on Tuesday, it was a do-or-die match for the Savita Punia-led side, with Canada needing just a draw to progress as they had a better goal difference.

Locked 2-2, Janneke Schopman's girls responded brilliantly when Lalremsiami scored off a rebound, after a penalty corner in the 51st minute. The Indians came out aggressive in the first quarter and dominated the proceedings from the start.

India's attacking intent bore fruit as early as the third minute of the game when Salima scored off a rebound from a penalty corner. Two minutes later, Lalremsiami missed a great opportunity to double the lead, her shot whizzing past the Canadian goal post.

Just seconds from the first quarter, Sangita Kumari showed great skills to carry the ball from the baseline and create a great chance for India, which was saved by Canadian goalkeeper Rowan Harris. The Canadians showed more intent in the second quarter and managed to put the Indian defence under pressure on a few occasions.

But it was India who doubled their lead, in the 22nd minute, through Navneet Kaur, who shot in an open goal after receiving a pass from Lalremsiami. A minute later Canada secured a penalty corner and reduced the deficit through Stairs.

CWG 2022: From PV Sindhu to Bajrang Punia! Full schedule of Indian athletes in showpiece event

On Wednesday (July 27), PV Sindhu added another feather to her illustrious hat as the 27-year-old superstar shuttler has been named as India's flagbearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to kick off in Birmingham on July 29.

It was touted to be a two-way battle between Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu for being the flagbearer before the shuttler was given the responsibility by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Neeraj, for the unversed, has bowed out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury which he sustained during his silver-medal win in the men's javelin throw final at the recently-concluded World Atheltics Championships.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday.

Sindhu was India's flagbearer at the last edition, in Gold Coast, where she returned with a silver medal in the women's singles. This time around, the two-time Olympic medallist will be eager to secure the elusive gold medal.

"The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is delighted to announce shuttler PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as the Flagbearer of Team India at the Opening Ceremony," the IOA had said in a statement.

"Two other highly deserving athletes were considered to be Team India's Flagbearer: weightlifter Ms Mirabai Chanu and boxer Ms Lovlina Borgohain, who are both Olympic medallists," it added.

Despite no Neeraj, India have a lot of strong medal-contenders such as Sindhu (whose event kicks off on August 3), Mirabai Chanu (weightlifting), Bajrang Punia (wrestling), Lovlina Borgohain (boxing), Manika Batra (table tennis), India's hockey teams (men and women), women's cricket team, etc.

The CWG 2022 edition will be held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday. In their first match on Sunday, India had held England to a 1-1 draw where it was Vandana who had scored for the team while China too had drawn 2-2 against New Zealand.

It was a tense start to the match with the Chinese dominating the ball possession with a structured attack in the initial minutes of the game but once India shook off their nerves, they made some lethal circle penetrations that could have earned them an early lead. One such opportunity came in the 6th minute when Sharmila Devi and Navneet Kaur worked in tandem to take a shot on goal. But Navneet`s strike was blocked by a strong Chinese defence.

After ending the first quarter in a stalemate, India penetrated the Chinese defence on a number of occasions in the second quarter. In the 23rd minute, a PC awarded to India was contested and the referral went in favour of China. It was a shot taken by Vandana from the top of the D which bounced off Jyoti`s body into the goal, after she missed getting a deflection thus resulting in the referral going against India. But only seconds later, India found the foot of the Chinese defender winning their first PC of the match. But this chance went amiss too as Gurjit Kaur`s powerful drag-flick was blocked away by the Chinese goalie Liu Ping. China, however, did not falter when their attackers created a sublime variation that resulted in a goal. It was Jiali Zheng who put the ball past India`s experienced goalkeeper Savita in the 26th minute.

Meanwhile, India continued to work some impressive formations in their attack, earning the team another PC in the 27th minute but Monika who took the shot could not make much of the chance and the second quarter ended with China leading 1-0. Both teams displayed attacking hockey coupled with speed and patience in their efforts. The third quarter saw China fetching their first PC of the match but could not make much of it with Gu Bingfeng`s drag going wide. India, who won a couple of PCs in this quarter remained calm in their pursuit of a goal. Their wait finally ended in the 45th minute when the team converted from their 5th PC of the match.

India showed more urgency to convert a goal in the final quarter and they also defended well to keep the pressure on their opponents. They even warded off danger in the 56th minute when they conceded a PC, but they did well with the line defence to clear the ball.

Both teams contested for the ball in the dying minutes of the game, bringing the viewers to the edge of their seats. But with seconds ticking away, neither could successfully score despite China calling for a video referral asking for a PC on the hooter. With this match too ending in a stalemate, India will hunt for a win in their last round-robin league match on Thursday.
