No ban for Brook, Bethell as England stars receive formal warning over Wellington row

England stars Jacob Bethell and white-ball captain Harry Brook escaped bans over the Wellington nightclub incident that made headlines recently. While the ECB punished them for violating protocols with fines and formal warnings, England’s Cricket Regulator, an independent body that enforces cricket regulations within the ECB, also spared them without slapping bans or major punishments. Although they (Regulator) found the pair of breaching Regulation 3.2 of the ECB's Professional Conduct Regulations, the two escaped with just a slap on the wrist.

That instance, however, occurred ahead of the third ODI between England and New Zealand in Wellington (November 1, 2025). While Brook initially admitted to being alone during an altercation with a nightclub bouncer, later two other players, Bethell and seamer Josh Tongue, were revealed to be involved.

England considered stripping Brook of his captaincy duties, but instead decided to fine him while keeping the matter undisclosed. Although that instance remained under wraps for some time, it came to the limelight following England’s (1-4) defeat during the away Ashes, with the UK outlet The Telegraph first reporting about it.

"No Participant may conduct themselves in a manner, do any act or make any omission at any time which is improper or which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute,” the regulation read, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Two regular England starters, Bethell and Brook, have both accepted ‘caution notices’ served to them, effectively placing them on final warning. Tongue, on the other hand, has admitted to having ‘learned’ from that instance and has had no action taken against him.

Meanwhile, England had imposed a midnight curfew ahead of the side’s away white-ball tour of England and also during the T20 World Cup, with the restrictions likely to extend till the English summer. While Brook readies himself for the County Championship Cricket for Yorkshire, his England teammate Bethell is currently plying his trade for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL.
