India's Neeraj Chopra loses first spot by just 0.01m in Diamond League Final

India’s Neeraj Chopra has had near misses lately, and falling shy of winning the 2024 Diamond League (DL) Final by just one centimetre is another example.

Competing in the javelin throw final at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Saturday (Sep 14), Neeraj stood second (87.86m), with Paris bronze medalist Anderson Peters winning the coveted trophy with his best throw of 87.87m.

On a breezy cold night in Belgium’s capital, Germany's Julian Weber finished third with his best throw of 85.97m. Paris gold medal winner Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and last year's DL winner Jakub Vadlejch did not participate in the competition.

Even last year, Neeraj stood second with his best throw of 83.80m, losing to Czech Republic's Jakub, who registered a throw of 84.24m. Though he bettered his record this time, Neeraj failed to put his hands on the trophy by a whisker.

So close, yet so far

In Brussels, Neeraj began with a throw of 86.82m, only behind Peters, who clocked 87.87m in his first attempt. Neeraj’s second throw was far from convincing, but his third throw – his best of the night (87.86m), got him closer to Peter’s tally.

Although Peters was consistent throughout, with his remaining throws ranging between 84-86m, Neeraj’s two out of the final three attempts read 82.04m and 83.30.

He ended his attempts with a rocking 86.46m final throw.

Meanwhile, Neeraj looked reluctant to push above his weight during the final as he was mindful of his groin injury, which restricted him from giving his best since the Summer Games in Paris this year.

Neeraj, who talked about undergoing surgery for his groin after the Olympics, delayed to complete in the Diamond League. With India's javelin hero's season getting over, Neeraj might undergo the knife.
