Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain and IPL veteran MS Dhoni could play as an uncapped player for the franchise next season, as BCCI mulls reactivating old rule, per the latest reports. In a sensational development, the former five-time winners could retain Dhoni under the uncapped player category ahead of the mega auction - a win-win situation for both MSD and CSK.
The Indian Board is said to be returning toits oldrule, which says thatany international cricketer who has retired for over five years shall be put in the uncapped player category.
Dhoni, who last played for India during the 2019 ODI World Cup and announced his retirement on August 15, 2020, completed five years and is now eligible to play as an uncapped player in the Indian Premier League.Moreover, this will also help CSK retain other players at higher prices, as for the uncapped ones, per the previous rule, the franchises can have their services for as high as INR 4 crore. During the last mega auction in 2022, CSK retained Dhoni for INR 12 crore.
Meanwhile, the 43-year-old cricket veteran relinquished CSK’s captaincy a day before the start of IPL 2024, handing it over to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. Under Gaikwad, CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs last season.
Thala, as most fans call Dhoni, was impactful during his brief outings in IPL 2024, scoring 161 runs in just 73 balls that he faced, striking at 220.54 and averaging 53.66.

BCCI likely to reactivate 'old rule'
Following the high-profile meeting between the BCCI and IPL team owners on July 31 in Mumbai, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed the board itself mentioned that they could reactivate this rule.
"I've no idea about it. We've not requested for it. They (the BCCI) have themselves told us that the 'uncapped player rule' may be kept, that's all. They (the BCCI) haven't announced anything as yet. The rules and regulations will be announced by the BCCI,” Kasi said during a chat with Times of India (TOI).
Meanwhile, during a promotional event in Hyderabad earlier this year, Dhoni commented on his prospect of playing the next IPL season.
“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but it needs to be in the best interest of the team,” Dhoni said.
