The 2024 Kentucky Derby is all set to take place on Saturday, May 4 at the famous Churchill Downs track. The official post time for the 150th edition of the Run for the Roses event is 6:57 PM ET (Sunday, 5 PM 4:27 IST). The sesquicentennial race, one of the most famous in the world and the USA, will feature 20 horses.
Winning the Kentucky Debry is considered one of the top honours for the horse and jockey alongside two other races in its ilk which are The Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. The horse to win the Kentucky Derby 2023 was named Mage trained by Gustavo Delgado and J. Castellano as jockey.

Why Kentucky Derby has 20 horses?
The Kentucky Derby, in its inception year 1874, had 15 horses on the field. The number kept fluctuating till 1974 when the derby had 23 horses in competition. The event received some flak for fielding more horses than other derbies and since thenit has had 20 horses in the competition. The Preakness and the Belmont Stakes feature 14 horses each in the competition.

How do horses get qualified for the Kentucky Derby?
To take part in 2024 Kentucky Derby, each horse in the field had to run in a series of races named The Road to the Kentucky Derby. These races are held every year from derby to derby around the world. The top five horses in each race are awarded certain points. At the end of the races, top 20 horses with maximum points qualify for the Kentucky Derby.
