Visually impaired swimmer Kanchanmala Pande made the nation proud by becoming the first Indian to clinch a gold medal at the World Para-Swimming Championship in Mexico.
Pande, who works as a government employee, secured the top spot in 200 meters medley event in the S-11 category.
As per reports, the 26-year old swimmer was confident enough to win a medal during the championship but didn’t expect to finish first and win a gold medal.
Pande was the only female swimmer from the country to have qualified for the World Championships that started on December 2.
Unfortunately, Pande missed the top three finish by a whisker in 100 meters freestyle and came fourth.
Kanchanmala Pande is the same athlete who was forced to borrow money and was fined for travelling without a ticket on public transport inBerlinafter she was not given enough money by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) during the Berlin event in July.
