Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer manifested his team to reach playoffs this season, and it did happen. Playing against Mumbai Indians at the iconic Eden Gardens the other night, the hosts KKR beat them by 18 runs in a rain-hit match to become the first team to seal a playoff berth in IPL 2024. Iyer admitted he envisioned this scenario ahead of this marquee clash, and theteam'soverall performance helped him achieve it.
KKRhaven’tput a foot wrong this season. Be it any department, they excelled and delivered at every crucial juncture, making them the team to beat in the knockouts.
Even against the mighty MI that struggled big time in IPL 2024 under new captain Hardik Pandya, KKR dominated despite looking like losing in the second innings. However, a complete team performance, with all-rounder Andre Russell and mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy doingthe majorityof the damage, helped KKR restrict MI well within the target, winning the game by 18 runs.

“Ithink I manifested this before the game (on becoming the 1st side to qualify for the playoffs). Nerves were there, boys have been raising their hands, and there have been many game-changers and kudos to each and every one of them.
“Ifeel whichever team plays the best they got a great chance to win. They were going at great guns in the first six overs, and to bounce back from thatsituationitwas nice to see,"Iyer said during the post-match presser.
Varun -the game-changer for KKR
Meanwhile, thematch was reduced to 16-over per side, with only one bowler allowed to bowl four overs. While Mumbai picked Bumrah to complete that quota, who returned with two wickets, Iyer handed the extra over to Varun, given how the pitch behaved with the passing overs.
Explaining his decision to back Varun ahead of the likes of Sunil Narine, Russell and even Harshit, who also picked two wickets in the final over, Iyer said,
"Iwasn'tthinking about stats or records; the weatherwasn'tgreat, but we won the game,andthat'swhatis more important.It'sall about understanding which bowler is doing well on that particular day; I feel both of them bowled well, and my gut went with Varun (on bowling the 4th over) at that point, and I backed him,"the skipper added.
KKR will travel to Ahmedabad on Monday (May 13) for their penultimate group game this season before facing Rajasthan Royals in an away clash on Sunday (May 19).
