IPL 2024: LSG stun CSK at Chepauk, chase 211 as Stoinis hits unbeaten century

IPL 2024: LSG do the double over CSK with an emphatic win after Marcus Stoinis hits a brilliant century

A dogged Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) breached the lion's den aka 'Chepauk' on Tuesday (Apr 23) night with the unlikeliest of victories by chasing down thedaunting 211-run target. The win helped LSG do the double over the five-time champions who were slaughtered at Ekana, a little less than a week ago.

Marcus Stoinis (124*) was the hero for Lucknow as he scored his maiden century in IPL to engineer the highest run chase at CSK's turf where the men-in-yellow had a 100 per cent win rate this season.

The dew played its part as the ground was soaking wet by the time CSK's first innings came to an end but the hosts weren't helped by some poor fielding and inexplicable bowling choices.

Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad had seven overs from Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman in the last 10 overs but preferred to backload them instead of going all out and making the target out of sight for LSG.

"It played a part, there was a huge amount of dew and it took our spinners out of the game. We could have otherwise controlled the game better and taken it deeper. But these are parts of the game, can’t control it," said Gaikwad in the post-match interview.

CSK had the game in their grasp for the major part as LSG lost both Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul in the powerplay overs as impact sub Devdutt Padikkal played attritional 19-ball 12-run innings.

Just when it appeared that the game was drifting away from their reach, Nicholas Pooran stepped up yet again and took apart Tushar Deshpande, alongside Stoinis to kickstart the comeback trail.

In the end, CSKperhaps lost their calm and tumbled to fifth spot in the points table, embroiled in a mid-tablebattle with the likes of Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals.

CSK post above-par total

Ruturaj lost the toss yet again as LSG captain KL Rahul opted to bowl first. Rahane opened the batting alongside Gaikwad but the former could not get going and lost to the guile of Matt Henry who bowled excellent lines to set him up.

Mitchell's poor form with the bat continued as he played a laborious 10-ball 11-run innings before being dismissed by Yash Thakur. CSK management persisted with Ravindra Jadeja on the no. 4 spot but the southpaw could not impose himself on the game and departed in the 12th over.

While others struggled, Gaikwad kept hold of one end and smashed his second IPL century, allowing CSK to Set an above-par total. The supporting act was provided by Shivam Dube who only dealt in biggies and kept LSG bowlers on their toes. Astonishingly, the LSG skipper did not bowl the spinners in front of him oncedue to the favourable match-ups - a decision that proved costly in hindsight.
