In the post-T20 WC-winning era, former batter Gautam Gambhir takes over as the new head coach of the Indian Team across formats.

The absence of three match-winners, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja (in T20Is), who announced their retirements from the format earlier, means a new captain would lead the Men in Blue.

Though star batter KL Rahul would make his return to the side for this series, he might captain in the ODIs, leaving the T20I captaincy to Hardik Pandya. Several media reports suggested that the BCCI plans to rest Rohit, Kohli, Jadeja and Bumrah for the ODIs, with a younger squad set to travel.

Besides, Rishabh Pant might return to the ODI squad for the first time in around two years, while Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson could retain their spots in the shortest format. Although the BCCI is yet to break the silence on Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan over their contract situation, the duo could make a surprise comeback in India colours.

Gautam Gambhir returns to the Indian dressing room as a new head coach, the BCCI announced in a statement earlier.

Gautam has replaced Rahul Dravid for the top position in Indian cricket and will take care of cricket operations at his level across formats.

GG's debut series as the head coach will be against Sri Lanka.
