The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has decided to move the 2028 edition of the India Open from New Delhi to Guwahati, with the National Centre of Excellence (NCE) set to host the prestigious tournament. BAI general secretary Sanjay Mishra said the decision was prompted by the tournament's clash with Republic Day celebrations. The 2028 edition is scheduled to take place from January 25 to 30, making it difficult for players and organisers to conduct practice sessions and matches smoothly in the national capital.
"The 2027 edition of India will be held in New Delhi but the 2028 edition, we'll shift it to Guwahati. The dates (25 January to 30), the period then, because of January 26, it comes slightly tough for players. It becomes tough for practice and for the tournament," Mishra told reporters after the conclusion of the World Championships. The NCE in Guwahati has already hosted major international badminton events, including the World Junior Championships last year. The India Open will return to New Delhi the following year.
Before that, the 2027 India Open will be staged in the capital from February 2 to 7. The shift represents an immediate change from the tournament's traditional January window, with the 2026 edition having been held from January 13 to 18 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Mishra also expressed confidence that Indian players who struggled at the recent tournament can recover and produce stronger performances in the upcoming events.
“To think that we can win at every tournament is unrealistic. Our players have shown that they can beat any player on their day. In this event, maybe some of our players couldn't perform but they'll bounce back in the next tournament.” While the 2028 edition will see a venue change, the more immediate adjustment is to the dates of the 2027 tournament.
Mishra explained that moving the India Open to another date is not straightforward because the Badminton World Federation (BWF) calendar is tightly planned around tournaments worldwide. "That is not possible. Actually, this is a calendar that BWF decides. Changing the date of one tournament would require changing the whole calendar, so that is not possible," he said. With Guwahati increasingly becoming an important destination for international badminton, the 2028 India Open will provide the city with another opportunity to host one of the sport's biggest tournaments.
