Australians delivering on the big stage is something the cricketing world is familiar with. Youngster Jake Fraser-McGurk, debuting for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, left an impression on everyone in his first game with a match-winning fifty against Lucknow Super Giants. The right-handed batter smoked five sixes and two fours in his 35-ball 55-run stay at the crease, helping Delhi clinch a six-wicket win at the Ekana Stadium.
His inclusion in the XI came as a wonder call for the struggling side, as they looked composed yet hungry for the win during the run chase. Having been roped in by DC as someone who plays attacking cricket upfront, Jake had a night to remember as he made it to an elite list of Delhi players with the highest scoreon debut. Although he admitted being anxious ahead of his IPL debut, Jake said he had not seen anything like IPL before.
“I've spent the last five, six games on the, on the sidelines just watching it and itching to get out there. So, just to get out there and have my first game to be a win, I'm stoked.
“Trying not to swing too hard and losing the shape and just trying to find the middle of the bat, and just watching the ball and reacting to it. That's what I've been doing for the last twelve months and why change it?" Jake Fraser-McGurk said after DC chased down 168 against LSG.
His 77-run stand with DC Captain Rishabh Pant came in handy for the side as they remained ahead in the chase after losing openers inside the Powerplay.

Speaking on his knock and his favourite shot of the day, Jake said, “I loved that one over cover. I don't usually hit that many on the offside, so. I think it's something that I'll continue to learn to do—batting more out of the powerplay, focusing on my strike rate, and rotating the strike as well. I believe it's a skill that will come with experience, and playing more games will definitely aid in that."
Nothing like IPL!
The cash-rich league can be intimidating for plenty of youngsters for what it brings to the table, and Jake was no different.
Cherishing his first outing in perhaps the best franchise-based T20 League in the world, Jake said, "I'm thrilled to be here; it's like stepping into a different world. I've never seen anything quite like it before. The firsthand experience has been brilliant, and I hope for more. It's an amazing time to be in India."
Meanwhile, after the win, Delhi has four points to its name on the points table but is placed ninth.
