Australia’s Mitchell Starc couldn’t have asked for a better start to the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay. The left-arm quick broke multiple records inside the first session on the opening day on Saturday (Aug 22). Starc, 36, picked up a wicket on the first ball of the match, and surpassed James Anderson with a ninth career first-ball strike.

Playing his 107th Test match, Starc also surpassed Dale Steyn’s tally of 439 Test wickets, entering the list of top-10 highest Test wicket-takers of all time. He returned with excellent figures of 6/12 in 10 overs, with six maidens, as Bangladesh got all out for 64 in just 34 overs. He sits in the 10th position with 441 Test wickets and counting.

Record five-for and more

Unsurprisingly, Starc picked up his 19th Test five-wicket haul in just 22 balls, his second-fastest and sixth overall in the format’s history. Against the West Indies in an away Test last year, he created a world record by dismissing five batters in 15 deliveries.

Starc first dismissed the left-hander Shadman on a first-ball duck caught in the gully, before removing his opening partner Tanzid Hasan (0) and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (0) on successive deliveries in his second over. In his third over, Starc accounted for Mominul Haque caught for nine and then completed his record five-wicket haul—in just 22 minutes—by trapping Litton Das lbw for a duck.

A 24-run stand for the 10th wicket between Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam saved Bangladesh from registering their lowest Test total. But Starc returned to pick up his sixth wicket and dismiss Bangladesh for 64 in the first innings.
