In the face of strong competition from local rivals, the international ride-hailing giant Uber has officially halted its operations in Pakistan. This decision follows its withdrawal from several major cities in 2022.

"Our subsidiary brand, Careem, will continue operations offering ride-hailing services across Pakistan," the spokesperson said, reported Press Trust of India.

Back in 2019, Uber purchased its competitor Careem for a sum of USD 3.1 billion.

Both companies said they would keep running their own services with their own names.

Uber had stopped working in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad in 2022. It was using the Careem app in these cities and also in Lahore.

Now, the company will focus on growing the Careem app in Pakistan. So, people who used Uber will need to switch to Careem because Uber has stopped working in Pakistan starting Tuesday.

He mentioned that Uber customers with remaining balances in their accounts would eventually be able to retrieve their funds and receive complimentary rides on Careem.

In recent years, ride-hailing and sharing apps have expanded in Pakistan, with additional local competitors entering the market and providing more competitive pricing. As a result, the dominance of Careem and Uber in Pakistan has diminished.
