Pakistan's new ISI chief: Pakistan on Monday (Sep 23) announced Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik's appointment as its spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence's (ISI) new Director General.
He will assume his role as Pakistan's ISI chief on September 30. He will replace the agency's current DG Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who was appointed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan and has held the post since 2021.
Traditionally, even though the ISI chief is appointed by Pakistan's prime minister, they execute their power in consultation with the army chief.

Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik is currently an adjutant general at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.
A graduate of Fort Leavenworth, United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies, United Kingdom, Lt Gen Malik began his career in September 1988.

Malik has previously commanded the Infantry Division in Balochistan and the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan.
He is the recipient of the Sword of Honour, an award given to the top cadet at the Pakistan Military Academy, Pakistan Air Force Academy, or other academies in Pakistan.
Malik has previously commanded the Infantry Division in Balochistan and the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan and has served as the chief instructor at the National Defence University (NDU), as well as an instructor at Pakistan Command and Staff College, Quetta.
In Pakistan's 77-plus years of existence, the ISI has wielded considerable power in matters of the security and policy of the nation, which is why the post of ISI chief is considered one of the most important in the Pakistan Army.
Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik's appointment comes merely a month after the arrest of former ISI chief General Faiz Hameed. On August 12, Pakistan's military revealed that Hameed was arrested for "multiple instances of violation" of the Army Act after his retirement in December 2022.
"The process of Field General Court Martial has been initiated, and Lt Gen (retd.) Faiz Hameed has been taken into military custody," said theInter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
