In a major breakthrough for India, the World Bank has asked Pakistan not to pursue theKishanganga dam dispute to the International Court of Arbitration (ICA), a Pakistani daily reported.

Pakistan's Dawn newspaper reported that the World Bank has told Pakistan to comply with India's to appoint a “neutral expert” to solve the issue.

PM Modi had inaugurated the Kishanganga hydropower project in Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) last month with Pakistan officials protesting the Indian prime minister's move. PM Modi had said the project will ensure J&K will not only get free but also sufficient power.

Pakistan had earlier objected to the construction of dam alleging that project affected the flow of water in Neelum river. It led Hague's arbitration court to halt the construction and it ruled that India could divert all the water leaving a small amount for Kishanganga river.

Pakistan considers the construction of the Kishanganga dam as a violation of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960.

According to the Pakistan daily, World Bank president Jim Yong Kim advised Pakistan to "withdraw" from its stand and suggested two names to help resolve the dispute.

Pakistan had earlier appointed a four-member delegation to request the World Bank to act as a guarantor in the Kishanganga Dam issue.
