October’s full moon is going to be a special one, especially for all Selenophilesit will be a treat to the eyes. The full moon event for this month is due on October 17 and is also known as Hunter’s Moon. What makes this moon stand out is its appearance, which will be closer than any other moon this year.
Hunter’s moon also happens to be the largest supermoon, and this time it will be bigger and brighter than an average moon. This will be the third of four consecutive supermoons (and the brightest by a tiny margin), confirms NASA.
A supermoon is when the Moon appears bigger than usual. This occurs because the Moon's orbit around Earth isn't a perfect circle: it's an elliptical or egg-shaped orbit.
The Moon doesn't change size, it just looks bigger when is closer.

October’s full moon will make its appearance on Thursday morning (Oct 17) at 7:26 am EDT. This will be late Wednesday night for the International Date Line (IDL) West time zone and early Friday morning from New Zealand Time eastwards to the IDL.
In India, the full moon will appear at 4:26 am IST on Thursday morning. The moon will appear for about three days around this time, from Tuesday evening through Friday morning.
Why is it called Hunter’s Moon?
The full moon of each month has a unique name that differentiates it from other moons; likewise, October’s full moon has the name of Hunter’s moon.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the month of October is considered the best time to hunt with leaves falling off and the deer fattened. Since the harvesters have reaped fields, hunters can easily see the animals that have come out to glean.
The Maine Farmer's Almanac first published Native American names for the full Moons in the 1930s. Over time these names have become widely known and used.

What’s so special about this full moon?
This celestial phenomenon symbolizes the change of seasons. Historically, this time of year marked the period when tribes would stock up on meat for the approaching winter. The name Hunter’s Moon also reflects the practice of hunting and gathering during this season.
For Hindus, this is Sharad Purnima, also known as Kumara Purnima, Kojagari Purnima, Navanna Purnima Kojagrat Purnima, or Kaumudi Purnima. This is a harvest festival celebrated in a variety of ways.
