Attempts to rake Kashmir at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday, under the chairmanship of Pakistan's foreign minister Ishaq Dar, fell flat. The effort met with little traction, as only Türkiye mentioned Kashmir, while major powers and permanent members of the council – the United States, China, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom – refrained from directly referring to it.Pakistan is a non-permanent member of the UNSC for a 2-year term, ending in December of next year, and for the current month is the chair of the council. Under its chairmanship, it is holding two open debates, one of which took place on Monday under the theme “Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.” Pakistan is expected to hold another open debate this week.During his opening address, Foreign Minister Dar not only raised Kashmir but also India's decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. The treaty was put in "abeyance" by India after the April Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-trained terrorists. Dar said, "Jammu and Kashmir remains one of the oldest disputes on the agenda of the UN Security Council....", adding that the Indus water treaty has "withstood periods of trials and tribulations in bilateral relations...".India was quick to dismiss the Pakistani comments. Pointing to India's "zero tolerance for terrorism" India's Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said, “it ill behoves a member of the Council to offer homilies while indulging in practices that are unacceptable to the international community.”India’s position on Kashmir has long rested on the 1972 Simla Agreement and the 1999 Lahore Declaration, both of which mandate bilateral resolution of disputes between the two nations. Pakistan’s repeated attempts to raise Kashmir at the UNSC have historically faltered, as most council members view it as a bilateral matter. We firmly support a just and lasting resolution through constructive dialogue between the parties". The Turkish stance comes amid Erdogan's support for Islamabad during the May conflict, including the usage of Turkish drones against India.
India counters US claims at UNSC
"US leadership delivers de-escalations...between India and Pakistan", the US diplomat said at the UNSC meeting, restating Trump's comments. No takers for Kashmir during Pakistan FM Dar's chairmanship of UNSC

Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has openly defended ‘The Resistance Front’ (TRF) - which was recently designated a terror outfit by the United States. Speaking at the Pakistani parliament, Dar repeated that due to Pakistan's intervention, TRF's mention from the UNSC statement for the Pahalgam terror attack was removed. He further said that Pakistan does not consider the TRF illegal and asked for proof that it carried out the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. "We opposed the mention of TRF in the UNSC statement. I got calls from global capitals, but Pakistan will not accept," Dar said. "TRF was deleted, and Pakistan prevailed." "We don't consider TRF illegal. Show us proof they carried out the Pahalgam attack. Show ownership by TRF. We won't accept the allegation, and TRF had to be deleted from the UN press release," he added. Dar's statement comes even as TRF publically took responsibility for the terror attack and has now been designated as a terror outfit by the United States' State Department.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that TRF would be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), and would face financial sanctions, restricting its access to support from individuals and entities under American jurisdiction. India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar welcomed the US decision and termed the move "strong affirmation of India-US counter-terrorism cooperation." "TRF, a Lashkar-e-Taiba front and proxy, claimed responsibility for the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack which killed 26 civilians," the State Department said. “TRF has also claimed responsibility for several attacks against Indian security forces, including most recently in 2024.”
How Pak got TRF's name dropped from UN statement
Back in April this year, Dar revealed that Islamabad used its position as a non-permanent member of the UNSC to alter the language in the US-proposed statement, which originally named and shamed TRF. "On behalf of Pakistan, I had two objections [to the statement]. First, only Pahalgam was mentioned and secondly, the blame was put on The Resistance Forum," Dar said. "I thought this was not acceptable. You have to write Jammu and Kashmir along with Pahalgam." He added, " I gave clear instructions to our ambassador at the UN to ensure the amendments are made," he said. According to Dar, the process to finalise the statement took 2.5 days as Pakistan refused to accept the initial draft. "I received phone calls from big capitals to come to a consensus on the draft, but I told them nothing doing," he said. Ultimately, Pakistan’s objections were reflected in the final press statement issued by the UNSC.
UNSC statement that Dar spoke about
The UNSC condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, underlining the need to hold the perpetrators, organisers and the sponsors of "this reprehensible act of terrorism" accountable and bring them to justice. "The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, during which at least 26 people were killed and many more injured," it said in the press statement. The 15 members reiterated that any acts of terrorism were criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed. They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat, by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.

Days after former Pakistani PM Imran Khan's sons spoke about his incarceration and demanded his release, Jemima Goldsmith, Khan's ex-wife slammed the government for threatening them with arrest if they attempt to visit the country. In a strongly worded post on X, Goldsmith said her sons, Sulaiman and Qasim Khan, have not been allowed to speak to Imran, who has been held in solitary confinement in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail for nearly two years. “Pakistan’s govt has now said if they go there to try to see him, they too will be arrested and put behind bars. She announced that Imran Khan's entire family would be part of the upcoming protest.
Imran Khan's sons break silence
Imran Khan's sons Qasim and Sulaiman Khan made an appeal to US President Donald Trump and “people of influence” around to world to step in and support their father’s release. Khan's sons, who have stayed away from politics, urged the international community to step up efforts and put pressure on the Pakistani administration to release his father. In a television interview, they said that “they couldn’t stay quiet any longer.” "They are not giving him [Imran Khan] basic human rights. It is basically for human rights of not only our father but also other political prisoners and the restoration of proper democracy in Pakistan,” Qasim said. When asked about speculation that Khan might strike a deal with the government to secure his release, Qasim dismissed the idea outright. “I just don’t see him taking a deal like that to save his skin. The case alleges that Khan facilitated the illegal transfer of £190 million (received from the UK’s National Crime Agency) in exchange for land given to a trust linked to him and Bushra Bibi. In addition, Khan was previously convicted in the Toshakhana case—for selling state gifts without proper disclosure—and sentenced to 3 years, which led to his disqualification from politics. Though this conviction was later suspended, it set the stage for further legal action. He was also sentenced to 10 years in the Cipher case, but that conviction was quashed by the Islamabad High Court in June 2024. Beyond convictions, Khan is facing over 180 legal cases, including terrorism charges related to the 2023 protests.

In a television interview, Pakistan's former Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was fact-checked about the viral image of a global terrorist with the Pakistan Army present at the funeral of terrorists killed by India during Operation Sindoor. During an interview with Al Jazeera, Khar claimed that the person in the viral image was not a terrorist. However, she was interrupted by the interviewer who said that Pakistan Army did not say the image was fake in press conferences after India's Operation Sindoor. "I am telling you, with authority, with evidence which has been shared with the whole world, that this is not the man that you (India) are claiming it to be. The owners of the pet lion that leapt over a wall and attacked a woman and two children in the city of Lahore in Pakistan have been arrested. The woman and her two young sons, aged 5 and 7, were hospitalised, after an attack on them in a street when the lion escaped from a farmhouse in Johan town's neighborhood on Thursday (July 3). Security camera video released by police shows the lion jumping over a concrete wall and attacking a woman from behind, knocking her to the ground. The man can be seen sprinting out of the property the lion had escaped from with an object in his hand and chasing the lion off the woman, before it ran away further down the road where the children were attacked. The children sustained injuries on their face and arm injuries, but are in stable condition, according to news agency Associated Press. Lahore Police posted a video on social media in which they said that the lion escaped after an open cage at the farmhouse and was caught by owners, who immediately placed it in a vehicle and went into hiding in another district. Muhammad Faisal Kamran, Deputy Inspector General of Lahore Police Operations, said three people were arrested on Friday morning. “We’ve also captured the lion and transferred it to wildlife authorities,” Kamran was quoted saying. Lahore police also shared an image of three men in a police cell and video of the lion in a cage. Local media said the owner also did not have a license for keeping the lion and would be charged under the Wildlife Act, which could see them serving a maximum seven-year prison term or a fine of $17,500, as per reports. Keeping wild cats as pets is a status symbol in Pakistan and is not rare, but it needs a license, and big cats have to be housed outside of city limits. “This unfortunate incident highlights how wild animals are often kept in such places without a license, or permission — with no legal procedures followed — endangering the lives of many people,” Kamran was quoted saying in an interview. The government on Sunday (July 6) also announced that it was launching a province-wide crackdown against those keeping big cats without a valid license. To date, 13 lions have been seized and five have been arrested for violating wildlife laws.

Pakistan’s former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that his country would be open to extraditing terror accused, as a goodwill gesture to India, provided New Delhi is willing to cooperate in the process. He was responding to a question about extraditing Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as possible concessions and good-faith gestures to India. His statement has drawn the ire of the LeT chief's son, Talha Saeed, as well as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Bilawal, who also heads the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), said that such a move could be part of a “comprehensive dialogue” between the two countries, where terrorism is discussed as a key issue. "India is refusing to comply with certain basic elements that require that conviction to take place," Bilawal alleged, pointing to the need for Indian witnesses to testify in Pakistani courts. "If India is willing to be cooperative in that process, I am sure there will be no hurdle in extraditing any individual of concern", he added. "As part of a comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan, where terrorism is one of the issues that we discuss, I am sure Pakistan would not be opposed to any of these things," he said. On being asked to disclose the whereabouts of Saeed and Azhar, the PPP chief said, “It is factually not correct that Hafiz Saeed is a free man; he is in the custody of the Pakistani state,” adding that Islamabad has been unable to arrest Azhar. “It is our belief that he is in Afghanistan," Bilawal said.“If and when the Indian government shares information that he is on Pakistani soil, we will be more than happy to arrest him," he added.
Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar
Hafiz Saeed - the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind, and Masood Azhar are among India's most wanted terrorists. Saeed is currently serving a 33-year sentence for terror financing and has reportedly been lodged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail since 2019. However, reports suggest that his jail term is a show-off by the Pakistani administration to avoid FATF blockage, while in reality, he enjoys free hand. Azhar is the mastermind of several terror attacks in India, including the 2001 Parliament attack, the 2016 Pathankot airbase strike, and the 2019 Pulwama terror attack. India released Azhar from its custody in 1999 as part of a hostage swap deal during the Flight 814 Kandahar hijack. Both LeT and JeM have been banned by Pakistan, according to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA). Azhar is also a UN-designated global terrorist and has been proscribed by NACTA and living in an undisclosed place for the last many years.
Talha Saeed, PTI slams Bhutto
Hafiz Saeed's son, Talha Saeed, in a video message slammed Bilawal Bhutto for his remarks and said that he "should not" have talked about Pakistanis' extradition. Talha also added that his father's actions are not against Pakistan. "His statement is against the state policy, national interest and sovereignty, and we strongly condemn it. Bilawal Bhutto is either unaware of ground realities or promoting the enemy’s narrative,” he said and asked, "Could a state representative talk about handing over citizens to an enemy country?" Meanwhile, Sheikh Waqas Akram, spokesperson of the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan-led PTI, in a statement on Saturday, said the PPP leader is an “immature political child”, the Dawn newspaper reported. “We fail to understand why Bilawal is so keen on appeasing India. Bilawal has become a symbol of confusion and contradiction in Pakistan’s foreign policy discourse... PPP was founded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on the legacy of Kashmir, but today, Bilawal is betraying that legacy by pursuing political gains at the expense of Kashmiri blood,” he said.

Further details on Sunday’s quake are awaited as officials monitor the region for aftershocks and potential infrastructure impact.
Pakistan's propensity for earthquakes
Pakistan lies in one of the world's most seismically active regions, straddling the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are situated atop complex fault lines, making them particularly vulnerable to destructive earthquakes. As per ANI, Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan provinces lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate on the Iranian Plateau. Meanwhile, Sindh, Punjab, and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir provinces lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian Plate in South Asia. The collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates frequently causes powerful seismic events in the area.

As per reports, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property, though authorities are continuing to assess the situation.

India REJECTS Pakistan's accusation of Waziristan attack - Here's what it said

India has rejected a Court of Arbitration ruling that issued a “supplemental award” on its competence concerning the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir, and called it a flagrant violation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960. The dams are being built on the Indus River system, and the development came after India had paused the Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack in April. In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the “illegal” Court of Arbitration, purportedly constituted under the Indus Waters Treaty 1960, albeit in brazen violation of it, has issued what it characterises as a “supplemental award” on its competence concerning the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The MEA said that India never recognised the existence of this so-called Court of Arbitration, and its constitution is in itself a serious breach of the Indus Waters Treaty, and consequently any proceedings before this forum and any award or decision taken by it are also illegal and per se void. The ministry said that India placed the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance after the Pahalgam terrorist attack until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism. It added that this illegally constituted arbitral body has no jurisdiction to examine the legality of India’s actions in exercise of its rights as a sovereign state.“India categorically rejects this so-called supplemental award as it has rejected all prior pronouncements of this body,” it added. The MEA termed the development “the latest charade at Pakistan’s behest” and yet another desperate attempt by Islamabad to escape accountability for its role as the global epicentre of terrorism. Pakistan objects to the construction of the 330 MW Kishenganga hydroelectric project on the Jhelum river and the 850 MW Ratle dam project on the Chenab river due to the potential impact on its own water resources.Islamabad claims that the hydro projects are in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. Former foreign minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Monday that India should abide by the Indus Waters Treaty and share water fairly, or else Pakistan will wage a war and ensure that our people get water from all six rivers”. Delhi unilaterally suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which governs the usage of the Indus river system, on April 23 after 26 innocent civilians were killed by Pakistan-based terrorists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. After launching Operation Sindoor, India had agreed to a ceasefire when the Pakistani DGMO called and requested cessation of military action after Indian forces struck several air bases in Pakistan and rendered some of them useless. Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) on Saturday criticised Indian Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement that New Delhi would never restore the IWT with Pakistan. Speaking in the National Assembly during a session on the federal budget, Bilawal said, “India has two options: share water fairly, or we will deliver water to us from all six rivers.” “The attack on Sindhu [Indus River] and India’s claim that the IWT has ended and it’s in abeyance, firstly, this is illegal, as the IWT is not in abeyance, it is binding on Pakistan and India, but the threat itself of stopping water is illegal according to the UN charter,” Bilawal said. He continued, “If India decides to follow through on the threat, we will have to wage war again.”
