Violence broke out in Nagpur city in India's western state of Maharashtra on March 17 after a group of people demanding the removal of the tomb of Aurangzeb, a Mughal ruler, allegedly burned a religious book.

The Maharashtra CM on Saturday said that 104 people have been arrested for rioting based on CCTV footage, adding that more people will be arrested.&nbsp;

"Stones were hurled on female police constables, reports of molestation not true,&rdquo; Fadnavis said, according to PTI.
&ldquo;Those who attacked police during the arson in Nagpur will be dug out from their graves. Attacks on police are unpardonable. They will get the strictest punishment. We won't spare them,&rdquo; said Fadnavis while speaking in the Maharashtra legislative assembly. The chief minister added that the situation in the city is calm now.

<h2>Contaminated water kills hundreds every year&nbsp;</h2>
Statista noted in its report, published in January 2024, that the number of deaths due to unsafe water sources has generally decreased over time as it surveyed all the countries from 1990 to 2021. The report said that in low-income countries, unsafe water sources are the cause of 2.3 per cent of deaths as of 2021. In Chad, seven per cent of deaths are due to these unsafe water resources. In India, it was 3.3 per cent in 2021, compared to 14.1 per cent in 1990. The situation has gotten better, but a lot still needs to be done.&nbsp;
Dr Himanshu Batra, Consultant- Pediatrics, Manipal Hospital Dwarka, New Delhi told WION, "Adequate and clean drinking water is a basic human right and is important to prevent diarrheal illnesses, cholera, hepatitis and typhoid."&nbsp;
"Not only do these illnesses lead to mortality but also lead to malnutrition in younger children and missing school days in older children. Supply of adequate and clean drinking water to all is one of the developmental goals put by the United Nations. The government of India has also launched various programmes to address this issue so that clean drinking water reaches every household," Dr Batra said.&nbsp;
"Measures which can be taken at individual and community levels are rain water harvesting, avoiding wastage of water, using filters, chemical disinfection, boiling water at home before use," Dr Batra added.&nbsp;

"Recently, Pune has experienced an outbreak of Guillain-Barr&eacute; Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, with a surge in cases potentially linked to water contamination. Contaminated water disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, particularly children, leading to malnutrition and stunted growth," Herkal said.&nbsp;
"To address this issue, a multi-pronged approach is essential: investing in water purification infrastructure, raising community awareness on sanitation, and promoting sustainable water management practices. Public-private partnerships and innovative technologies, such as affordable filtration systems, can play a crucial role in ensuring clean water accessibility for all," she further said.&nbsp;

Bagga said, "It is a sad fact that millions of individuals worldwide remain without access to clean drinking water, resulting in serious health risks and high mortality rates from waterborne diseases. The first and foremost priority needs to be finding a solution for this problem on the ground level, cost-efficiently and fast."&nbsp;
Giving an example of his AWG technology, Bagga said that the focus should be on remote, local installations instead of dependence on large-scale infrastructure projects&mdash;such as installing pipelines or hauling water to far-flung villages.&nbsp;
He said that projects aimed at helping people in underdeveloped and remote regions should lower operational costs and maintenance. The majority of AWG machines are powered by electricity from renewable sources such as solar power, thus avoiding the long-term expense of water procurement and distribution, he pointed out.&nbsp;
"AWG deployment in water-scarce areas can make a dramatic socio-economic difference. If people, particularly women and children, don't have to spend their precious time fetching water, they can allocate that time to education, healthcare, and community development activities," Bagga noted.&nbsp;

Amid US President Donald trumps crackdown on illegal immigrants, the Indian government has advised its citizens studying in the US to comply with the laws there. This comes after a researcher Badar Khan Suri was arrested and another student had to self-deport to Canada.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, while speaking to the media on Friday (March 21) said that the two Indians, Suri and Ranjini Srinivasan, did not contact the Indian embassies in the US for of assistance.
Speaking further he said the US has the right to decide internal matters like visa and immigration as it is under the purview of a country's sovereign functions.
"We expect that when we have foreign nationals coming to India, they abide by our laws and regulations. Similarly, we expect that when Indian nationals are abroad, they must also comply with local laws and regulations," he added.

Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University was arrested by the US immigration officers for spreading "Hamas propaganda", while Ranjini Srinivasan's visa was revoked for participating in pro-Palestine protests. Ranjini, however, self-deported to Canada on March 11 using the Customs and Border Protection Home app, immediately after her US visa was revoked.
Meanwhile Suri claims his wife's Palestinian roots led to his arrest and is likely to be deported by the US authorities. However, his deportation has been put on hold after a court order.

Acting on the directive of the Bombay High Court, the CBI registered an FIR against Jain and his company for allegedly committing fraud to the tune of Rs 2,434 crore.&nbsp;
The central agency&rsquo;s investigation in the case also involves two firms floated by sister companies of Jai Corp, and their associated partners.
As per the FIR, Anand Jain and his associates, acting as directors and promoters of Jai Corp Ltd, conspired to float two firms, Urban Infrastructure Venture Capital and Urban Infrastructure Trustees Ltd, and raised Rs 2,434 crore from the public under the pretext of investing in the Urban Infrastructure Opportunities Fund for real estate development in Mumbai and other locations. Further, on January 31, 2006, an Indenture of Trust (IoT) was registered with the Mumbai registrar of assurances by the two firms as settlor and trustee to establish a venture capital fund, which was later registered by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). As per the IoT, no transaction or investment would be made with any entity that had a conflicting interest with the directors, officers, or employees. However, in violation of this clause, Jain and his associates allegedly misappropriated public funds by making investments and issuing unsecured loans to sister concerns. The CBI has also accused these sister companies of Jai Corp of falsely recording unsecured loans as losses over several years, using fabricated documents to justify construction projects. The accused entities allegedly executed forged agreements to justify advance payments for benami land purchases, further supporting the fraudulent activities. Jai Corp is also accused of fraudulently exporting goods to Sarbags PTY Ltd in New South Wales, Australia, and Assurance Products Corporation in California, USA, using fictitious invoices and documents, thereby diverting funds for their own benefit.

Muskan then made Sahil see Saurabh as an easy target.&nbsp;
SP added, "We are investigating the clues, and if we find concrete evidence regarding his occultist beliefs, we will make it a part of the investigation."

Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court has been transferred to the Allahabad High Court allegedly following an "adverse report" against him after reports emerged that a&nbsp;huge pile of cash was found at his residence.
The decision to move Justice Varma was taken by the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. 
In a statement quoted by ANI, the top court said that the proposal for the transfer of Justice Varma to the Allahabad high court was &ldquo;independent and separate from the In-house enquiry procedure&rdquo;
"There is misinformation and rumours being spread with regard to the incident at the residence of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma...The proposal for transfer of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, who is the second senior most Judge in the Delhi High Court and a member of the Collegium, to his parent High Court i.e. the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, where he will be ninth in seniority, is independent and separate from the In-house enquiry procedure," the statement said
The proposal was examined by the Collegium comprising of the Chief Justice of India and four senior most Judges of the Supreme Court on 20th March 2025, and thereafter letters were written to the consultee Judges of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justices of the High Courts concerned and Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma. Responses received will be examined and, thereupon, the Collegium will pass a resolution," the apex court said. 
It further said that upon receiving information, the Delhi High Court Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya commenced an in-house enquiry procedure collecting evidence and information. Delhi HC Chief Justice, who had commenced the enquiry prior to the March 20 collegium meeting, would submit a report to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna today itself, the statement added.
Following its examination, the court would proceed for "further and necessary" action.

<h2>Who is Justice Yashwant Varma?</h2>
Justice Varma has been serving as a judge in the Delhi High Court since October 2021.
Born on 6 January 1969 in Allahabad, he completed his BCom (Hons) at Hansraj College, University of Delhi, before earning his law degree from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh.
He began his legal career in the Allahabad High Court, enrolling as an advocate on 8 August 1992. Over the years, he handled a broad spectrum of legal matters, including constitutional issues, labour and industrial law, corporate matters, and taxation.

According to his official profile on the Delhi High Court&rsquo;s website, he was appointed as Special Counsel for the Allahabad High Court in 2006.
From 2012 to August 2013, he served as the Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh and was later designated a Senior Advocate by the court.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on 13 October 2014 and became a permanent judge on 1 February 2016. He was transferred to the Delhi High Court on 11 October 2021.

<h2>What happened?</h2>
The present controversy broke out during the Holi break, when a large sum of unaccounted cash, reported to be ₹15 crore, was discovered at Justice Varma's Delhi residence. Firefighters who were called to extinguish a blaze at the property are said to have found the money.
Following the incident, the Supreme Court Collegium decided to transfer Justice Varma back to the Allahabad High Court, which is his parent court. 
Justice Varma has not issued any statement in response and has not presided over the court since the incident. His staff informed news agency PTI that he is "on leave."
The matter was brought up in court by senior advocate Arun Bhardwaj, who urged for steps to be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

Asked about Dhaka's ties with Pakistan under Yunus administration, he said, "I don't see any reason why Indian security should be jeopardized because of that (Dhaka-Islamabad ties), because we are not going to do anything that impacts the internal security of India, no, not at all". WION: How was your bilateral meeting with EAM Dr S Jaishankar? India has said it wants a mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh, what are the steps taken by Bangladesh on that front?
Md. Touhid Hossain: Bangladesh believes that both Bangladesh and India need a mutually beneficial good relation, and the present government of Bangladesh is working to that target. I had a good meeting with Dr S Jaishankar. I believe that we both understand each other's language, and we have discussed about the coming steps that we can improve relations on. We are having some bilateral meetings ahead, for example, the border security people of both the countries are going to meet very soon. We have also proposed that there could be other mutually agreed meetings that can help us to progress with the bilateral relations. We recognize that the change that took place in July, August, threw up some uncertainties about the relations, let us accept the reality that what has happened, and we just want both sides to come out of that and follow each other's requirements and go ahead with improving relations.&nbsp;
WION: Sir, you mentioned about the steps, if perhaps you can elaborate on what are the steps which you're talking about.
Md. Touhid Hossain: &nbsp;For example, we have already discussed the trade picking up already, because there was just for a short while, there was some stoppage of trade, or reduction of trade, but it has just picked up and the private sector is doing fine. We have recognized that, and at the official level, the two foreign secretaries have met, which is a positive thing, and we have also a mechanism for the next step, which is that we have a mechanism for meeting within the foreign ministers. Maybe someday we'll just go about that. These are the broad areas that we have discussed, in which all aspects of our relationship can be discussed and some decisions, some directions can come out from that.
WION: The Indian readout mentioned the BIMSTEC summit. What's your view, and do you think that on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit, there can be a meeting between the Indian Prime Minister and the advisor, the chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus?
Md. Touhid Hossain: This is going to be one meeting in which I understand that the heads of government of both the countries are going to be present at the same time. In fact, you know that there was initially a possibility of the meeting of the two in New York, but then the time did not correspond. By the time the chief adviser Md Yunus had gone there, Mr. Modi was already back in India. This is one meeting which has the advantage that all the heads of government will be there together. Second thing is that it's not too large a group. It's a relatively small group. So usually, traditionally, each of the heads of government meet each of the others, so there is an opportunity for the two of them to meet.
WION: India has raised the issue of the situation of minorities in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh government has said that it is not communal in nature. It is more political in nature. It is done by Awami League. We have seen the comments by the Bangladeshi Government as well. Now, what are the steps taken by your government to instill confidence when it comes to the minorities in Bangladesh?
Md. Touhid Hossain: In the first place, let me propose that we come out of this minority issue, we have been having a lot of, you know, time spent on this during the last five months, particularly in the Indian media, often exaggerated, often even on pure falsehood. Let's come out of this. The minorities, I mean, the Hindus and others, are equal citizens of Bangladesh, as with the Muslims, they have equal rights. They have equal protection under the law. So we will take care of our minorities, as India has to take care of their minorities. And I don't think this should become an issue between the two countries. We are there. The government is there, taking appropriate steps, and the confidence is there among the minorities. The number of Puja Mandaps has been exponential this time, nobody had any complaints about this. So let us get out of this mindset and better let us deal with other issues, or other issues that concern our two countries. The minorities are a concern of Bangladesh, and Bangladesh is taking care of them.&nbsp;
WION: Border has also emerged as an important issue between the two countries. We know what has happened now, essentially, what is Bangladesh's view? Because there were comments suggesting that the agreement signed under the Hasina government could be reviewed by Dhaka. Can you perhaps give a status update? What is the status of the Bangladeshi side?&nbsp;
Md. Touhid Hossain: As far as I am concerned, I have not come across any such proposal that the border agreement or the arrangements that we have agreed upon have to be changed. No, I haven't heard anything like that. The issue on the border is actually the BSF shooting and killing of civilians. This doesn't happen anywhere in the world. There are two friendly countries, there has been an issue that there are crimes at the border. Yes, there are crimes on every border in the world. That doesn't mean that they shoot people to kill. If anyone has broken the law, can be arrested, taken to court. The court, Indian court, what is to happen to them. But this is not done between friendly countries. That you shoot civilians on the border, even if they are committing any crime. Apart from that, the two border authorities are going to sit in a few days' time, and I'm sure that this mechanism has been working. It will work. They will just decide on how to manage the border. We want the border to be managed, and we are ready to help each other in this respect.
WION: You are also engaging with other countries in the region. That is the right of every sovereign government. But talking about your relationship with Pakistan, it has substantially increased. What is the view? What are the content in the relationship, because in the previous government, the relationship was not as substantive when it comes to the current government in Dhaka and of course, Pakistan.
Md. Touhid Hossain:&nbsp;Well, let's look at it like this. During the last few years, Pakistan was singled out for the visa system. All countries of the world were similar, and Pakistan was different, that every visa, even of a 70-year-old gentleman or lady coming, many divided families coming to see their relatives in Dhaka, had to wait months and then clearances, one after the other for the visa. This is not normal. We just look at Pakistan as just as another country. So, we think that it should be dealt with in the way that we deal with other countries also. So these are the one or two small things that are happening, but the hue and cry being created in the media about Pakistan, relation with Pakistan, I don't think that there is any substance. We are going to just normalize relations with Pakistan at par with other countries.&nbsp;
WION: I am asking this also because of the India and Pakistan relationship. You know very well, India has its own concerns regarding cross border terror from Pakistan. Now, when it comes to the Bangladesh and Pakistan relationship, Do you think that it could negatively impact India's security? Can you assure that India's security will be as it was in the past?
Md. Touhid Hossain: Well, I do not see any possibility that the relation with Pakistan, whatever improvements we make on issues where some deliberate efforts were being made to put it down or create hindrances. We just want to remove those. And I don't see any reason why Indian security should be jeopardized because of that, because we are not going to do anything that impacts the internal security of India, no, not at all.
WION: So now talking about the Trump administration. What's your view about the Trump administration? We saw the visit of the Indian prime minister as well. We saw the Indian foreign secretary talking about India's concern, but not seeking your response on that, seeking your response on how you envisage your relationship with the Trump administration in Washington.
Md. Touhid Hossain: Well, the Trump administration has just come into power, and then everyone has seen that a lot of changes are taking place in their policies, and we do not know exactly what they're going to do, but as far as we are concerned, we value the relation with the US. The US is the largest market for our export products. The US is also home to a very vibrant Bangladeshi diaspora community, and they send a substantial number of remittances to help our economy. So, these are areas in which we have very important relations with the US, and we will make all efforts to continue that. If there is any change in US policy, we'll of course try to adjust to that and ensure that the maximum benefits we can derive out of that relation,
WION: We recently saw the demolition of the residences of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka. This is something that obviously was seen very negatively, especially in India, given the historic relationship between India and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. What's your assessment? Is Bangladesh trying to distance itself from its legacy, the legacy of the Liberation War?
Md. Touhid Hossain: Surely not, actually it was...I would not justify this, but it happened sort of as a reaction to the incendiary statements of Sheikh Hasina, who is now living in India. I would like to see a situation in which, when she is staying in India, she keeps quiet and allows things to settle down, both for Bangladesh and for our relations. The demolition is purely an internal matter. I don't think India has any reason to be concerned about that.&nbsp;
WION: But will you rebuild the residences? Because this is part of your history. This is part of your legacy, the identity of Bangladesh.
Md. Touhid Hossain: I don't think the identity of Bangladesh relates to one building. Again, I'm not justifying the demolition again, I insist on that. But as I said that this is absolutely an internal matter, and then we'll deal with it as part of the law.
WION: So, we know the India, Bangladesh relationship and Ramzan is coming. Usually when Ramzan comes, Bangladesh used to request for food commodities, any requests from the Bangladeshi side this time around
Md. Touhid Hossain:&nbsp;I don't think there is any special request needed. The export and imports are not a matter of request. It's the question of the business - people being interested. And their interest is, naturally, profit. So whenever and from wherever it will be profitable for the business - people in Bangladesh, they will import. And Indian exporters will export to Bangladesh if they find it to be profitable for them.&nbsp;
WION: This has been an extensive interview about the status of the Indian projects in Bangladesh. What is the status? How are they going about? There was a plan to connect northeast of India through Bangladeshi ports. Is it still continuing? Or is it still suspended?
Md. Touhid Hossain: Well, I don't know of any suspension of any such projects, but the thing is that this is an ongoing process. There will be projects and there will be decisions which will be taken in the course of time, and things will go on. Bangladesh and India are very close neighbours, friendly neighbours. So, we will continue, and we will continue to pursue relations as it is found beneficial for both the countries.&nbsp;
WION: When can we see elections in Bangladesh?
Md. Touhid Hossain: I am not competent to actually say exactly when the elections will be held, because I do not know it as yet. But the point of the Bangladesh government is that the political change that took place, and the young generation, which brought about the change, have certain aspirations, they have certain views for their future. And then they want to ensure that they want some changes to take place in the political system, in the electoral system, and we are going for some, you know, changes like that. And we know that all the reforms cannot be done instantly in one day or one month, and we are not going to stay here for years and years to enact those but as I understand that the intention is to enact some of the reforms which are possible and then go for election. But in the meantime, we also want it's not the government, it's actually the young generation. They want that there should be some sort of a higher agreement among all the politicians that they are going to take care of their aspirations, the change they want.
WION: A new political party?

Asked about Dhaka's ties with Pakistan under Yunus administration, he said, "I don't see any reason why Indian security should be jeopardized because of that (Dhaka-Islamabad ties), because we are not going to do anything that impacts the internal security of India, no, not at all". Pakistan-Bangladesh relations are witnessing a notable warming trend, particularly following the political shift in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster in August 2024. Touhid Hossain: For example, we have already discussed the trade picking up already, because there was just for a short while, there was some stoppage of trade, or reduction of trade, but it has just picked up and the private sector is doing fine. We have recognized that, and at the official level, the two foreign secretaries have met, which is a positive thing, and we have also a mechanism for the next step, which is that we have a mechanism for meeting within the foreign ministers. Maybe someday we'll just go about that. These are the broad areas that we have discussed, in which all aspects of our relationship can be discussed and some decisions, some directions can come out from that. Muskan Rastogi (27) was married to Saurabh Rajput (29), a Merchant Navy officer, in 2016. It was a love marriage. The couple had a daughter.&nbsp;

Muskan mixed sedatives in the dish and served to Saurabh. When he fell unconscious, she invited Sahil and the duo killed Saurabh with knife attacks.&nbsp;
Police revealed that Muskan was previously planning to use sleeping pills and narcotics to kill Saurabh to avoid any suspicion.
In February, she reached out to a doctor pretending that she was suffering from depression and demanded sleeping pills. When the doctor did not give the required type of drug to her, she went to Google to find a strong sleeping pill.&nbsp;
She and Sahil changed the prescription and bought a lethal cocktail of sleeping pills and sedatives from a pharmacy. They also purchased two meat-cutting knives and plastic bags, police said.&nbsp;

CJI Sanjiv Khanna convened an urgent collegium meeting to discuss the discovery and subsequently the decision to transfer Varma from Delhi HC was taken, pending investigation.
The collegium unanimously decided to move Justice Varma back to his parent High Court in Allahabad. Varma previously served in the Allahabad HC before being appointed to the Delhi HC in October 2021.
