CJI seeks security details after burnt cash found at Delhi HC judge’s home

DeepSeek shocked the global tech industry and stock markets on its arrival, signalling China&rsquo;s leap in the race for dominance in AI and computing abilities. Now, China&rsquo;s Army, the People&rsquo;s Liberation Army (PLA) is using DeepSeek AI for non-combat functions, while analysts expect that the AI model&rsquo;s use is imminent in combat support functions by the Chinese military, says an SCMP report.&nbsp;
As per reports in Chinese media, DeepSeek&rsquo;s open-source large language models (LLMs) are being used in PLA hospitals, People&rsquo;s Armed Police (PAP), and national defence mobilisation organs.
The PLA&rsquo;s Central Theatre Command announced earlier this month that it had authorised &lsquo;embedded deployment&rsquo; of DeepSeek&rsquo;s R1-70B LLM in its general hospital, where it would provide treatment plan suggestions to support doctors.

Since the meteoric rise of DeepSeek, Beijing is reportedly promoting AI integration across industries, and some government agencies are increasingly utilising DeepSeek models, including for anti-corruption efforts.
Some units of the paramilitary police force, PAP, under the Central Military Commission, which also directs the PLA, are using the app for daily training and psychological counselling as soldiers use DeepSeek to address anxiety and create an exercise plan. The development was shared by Hainan PAP&rsquo;s political work department in a post on its social media account.

By initially deploying LLMs in non-combat scenarios, the PLA could be testing the technical and operational challenges before introducing DeepSeek in more sensitive, high-risk areas, Bresnick added. The PLA had been highlighting the utility of AI in military decision-making, and the emergence of an advanced model like DeepSeek&rsquo;s R1 might help in that area, he added. The PLA has been stressing on the use of high-end technology, particularly AI, to strengthen its combat capabilities to boost the effectiveness of drone swarm tactics, improve pilot training, and support in battlefield decision-making.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV had revealed in a programme back in 2023 that the PLA was testing ways to deploy hundreds of drones for swarm tactics with the help of AI and cloud computing.
A report in another Chinese newspaper, Guangming Daily, in February said that DeepSeek is playing an increasingly crucial role in the military and ushering in a new chapter in &lsquo;military intelligentisation&rsquo;.
DeepSeek is capable of processing massive amounts of battlefield data in real time, enabling precise situational awareness amid combat, it added.
Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military analyst, said DeepSeek&rsquo;s applications in non-combat operations so far show the PLA&rsquo;s commitment to fully utilising AI technology to enhance combat capabilities.

The police team reached the spot and found the two hanging. The police suspect death by suicide, although further investigation is underway.

Following the incident, local residents expressed alarm over the incident and called for strict actions.

Krishna Dutt, another visitor claims it is not possible to die by suicide from the tree the teenagers were found hanging from and suspects foul play.

Two 17-year-olds found hanging from tree in Delhi’s Hauz Khas Deer Park

India is extending all possible assistance to Amit Gupta, an Indian citizen from Gujarat's Vadodara, who has been wrongfully detained in Qatar for allegedly stealing data for which there is an ongoing investigation, people familiar with the matter said.
Gupta, a senior employee of the IT firm Tech Mahindra, was detained by Qatari authorities on January 1, his mother Pushpa Gupta told the media in Vadodara.&nbsp;
Gupta's father said he was detained by Qatar's state security.

The Supreme Court released the inquiry report submitted by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay into the controversy surrounding High Court Justice Yashwant Varma after brunt currency notes were allegedly discovered by firefighters from his official residence.
In the report, the Delhi High Court Chief Justice stated that he has a prima facie opinion that the matter demands a deeper investigation.
According to the report, a fire broke out in a storeroom at Justice Varma&rsquo;s official residence in Tughlak Crescent, New Delhi.
Following this, the firefighters discovered burnt currency notes at the site.
The apex court has ordered Varma to maintain all phone data and communications.&nbsp;

&ldquo;My wife and I were not in Delhi at the time of the fire. The storeroom is a common area used by staff and is not part of my main residence. The claim that we kept cash there is absurd,&rdquo; he said.
"I unequivocally state that neither I nor any of my family members had stored or kept any cash or currency in that storeroom at any point of time. Our cash withdrawals, made from time to time, are all documented and always through regular banking channels, the use of UPI applications and cards. In so far as the allegation of the recovery of cash, I once again make it clear that no one from my house ever reported seeing any currency in burnt form in the room," said Varma.
"Assuming without admitting that the video was taken immediately at the time of the incident at the site, none of it appears to have been recovered or seized. The second aspect which I need to underscore is that none of the staff was shown any remnants of cash or currency that may have been present on site," he added.
<h2>Chief Justice of India constitutes three-member committee</h2>
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, on Friday (Mar 21), constituted a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry against Varma.
"The Chief Justice of India has constituted a three-member Committee consisting of Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana; Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh; and Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, for conducting an inquiry into the allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting Judge of the High Court of Delhi," said a press statement released by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court released the inquiry report submitted by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay into the controversy surrounding High Court Justice Yashwant Varma after brunt currency notes were allegedly discovered by firefighters from his official residence. In the report, the Delhi High Court Chief Justice stated that he has a prima facie opinion that the matter demands a deeper investigation. According to the report, a fire broke out in a storeroom at Justice Varma’s official residence in Tughlak Crescent, New Delhi. Following this, the firefighters discovered burnt currency notes at the site. The apex court has ordered Varma to maintain all phone data and communications. In a shocking incident, an 11-year-old boy was murdered by her mother after a three-day vacation to Disneyland. The Indian-origin woman, Saritha Ramaraju, 48, has been charged with one felony count of murder for slitting her son's throat and killing him. The suspect has also been charged with one felony enhancement of personal use of a weapon, a knife, reported news agency PTI.
According to the office of the district attorney, Orange County, California, Saritha faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life if found guilty of charges.
Saritha, who had divorced her husband and shifted out of California in 2018 had gone to meet her son for a custody visit. She was in &nbsp;Santa Ana at the time of carrying out the unfortunate incident.
During their Santa Ana visit, Saritha purchased three-day passes to Disneyland for herself and her son. After meeting her son she was supposed to drop him at his father place on March 19.

Soon after the call was made, the &nbsp;Santa Ana police arrived at the place and found the dead body of the 11-year-old boy in a room filled with Disney souvenirs, reported the news agency.
<h2>Murder weapon recovered</h2>
According to the statement released by the DA, the murder seemed to have happened several hours before Saritha called the cops.
On investigation, the cops found a large kitchen knife inside the motel room that they were staying in. The murder weapon (knife) was brought a day prior to the incident.
Saritha was later admitted to a hospital as she had consumed some unknown substance after carrying out the murder.
"The life of a child should not hang in the balance between two parents whose anger for each other outweighs their love for their child," said the Orange county DA Todd Spitzer

Supreme Court makes internal inquiry report on justice Varma public

The Supreme Court released a video on Saturday (Mar 23), showing burnt cash piles allegedly found at Justice Yashwant Varma's premises.
The video was shared by the Commissioner of Police with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. It appears to depict sacks containing cash currencies, some of which are burnt.
The apex court press statement included several key attachments, aside from the videos. These included the report from the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice Varma's response to the allegations, and various other relevant documents.

Our cash withdrawals, made from time to time, are all documented and always through regular banking channels, the use of UPI applications and cards. In so far as the allegation of the recovery of cash, I once again make it clear that no one from my house ever reported seeing any currency in burnt form in the room," said Varma.
"Assuming without admitting that the video was taken immediately at the time of the incident at the site, none of it appears to have been recovered or seized. The second aspect which I need to underscore is that none of the staff was shown any remnants of cash or currency that may have been present on site," he added.

According to the Finance Ministry of India, Intelligence Officers have blocked 357 websites of illegal offshore online gaming firms. GST intelligence officers have blocked 357 websites of illegal offshore online gaming firms and attached about 2,400 bank accounts, the Finance Ministry said on Saturday.
The ministry also cautioned the public against engaging with offshore gaming platforms, even though many Bollywood celebrities and cricketers, besides social media influencers, are found to be endorsing these platforms.
About 700 offshore e-gaming companies are under the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) scanner, as these entities are evading GST by failing to register, concealing taxable pay-ins, and bypassing tax obligations.
Investigations also revealed that these offshore companies operated through 'mule' bank accounts to process transactions, the ministry said, adding the DGGI blocked 166 'mule' accounts.

"So far, 357 websites/URLs of illegal/non-compliant offshore online money gaming entities have been blocked by the DGGI, in coordination with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)," the ministry said in a statement.
In two other separate cases, DGGI collectively blocked nearly 2,400 bank accounts and put a freeze on nearly Rs 126 crore.
In another operation against a few Indian nationals who were running online money gaming platforms from outside India, it revealed that these individuals were facilitating online money gaming to Indian customers through various such online platforms, including Satguru Online Money Gaming Platform, Mahakaal Online Money Gaming Platform and Abhi247 Online Money Gaming Platform and are using mule bank accounts to collect money from Indian customers.
DGGI has so far blocked 166 mule accounts linked to these platforms. Three such persons have been arrested till now, and an investigation against more such individuals is under progress.
Under the GST law, 'Online Money Gaming', being actionable claim, is classified as a supply of 'Goods' and is subject to a 28 per cent tax.
Entities operating in this sector are required to register under the GST.
With the upcoming IPL season, enforcement actions by tax officers will be more stringent to curb illicit gaming operations, the ministry said, urging people to engage only with regulated e-gaming platforms.
The ministry said non-compliance by foreign entities distorts fair competition, harms local businesses, and skews the market.

These unscrupulous foreign entities circumvent restrictions by creating new web addresses.
"Investigations also revealed that these companies operated through 'mule' bank accounts to process transactions. Funds collected through mule accounts leave the potential to be funnelled into illicit activities, which may also be dangerous for the national security point of view," the ministry added.
The ministry further said, "It has been observed that many Bollywood celebrities and cricketers, along with YouTube, WhatsApp, and Instagram influencers, are found endorsing these platforms, and therefore, the public is advised to remain cautious and not engage with offshore online money gaming platforms as it may jeopardise their personal finances and indirectly support activities that undermine financial integrity and national security".

SC constitutes three-member committee to probe allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma

The opposition&rsquo;s Joint Action Committee (JAC) on delimitation, headed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, adopted a resolution demanding transparency in the exercise and urged the Union Government to extend the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 Census for another 25 years.
The meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) was held in Chennai on Saturday (Mar 22), where the panel adopted a resolution opposing any delimitation exercise that lacks transparency and fails to involve key stakeholders. The meeting was attended by representatives from multiple states concerned about the impact of the upcoming delimitation on their political and economic future. The JAC called for a fair and open process with participation from all state governments, political parties, and other relevant stakeholders before making any changes to parliamentary constituencies in the proposed delimitation exercise.

The JAC expressed concern that states that successfully implemented population control measures over the years might be unfairly penalised if their parliamentary representation is reduced due to a falling population share. The leaders said that the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 Census was meant to protect and incentivise states that took effective steps to stabilise population growth. Since the intended population goal has not yet been achieved, they called for extending the freeze by another 25 years.
&ldquo;The states that have effectively implemented the population control programme and consequently whose population share has come down should not be penalised,&rdquo; the resolution read.

The leaders also decided that a Core Committee of Members of Parliament from the participating states will coordinate strategies within Parliament to counter any delimitation proposal that does not align with these principles.
Stressing that the delimitation exercise must uphold the principles of federalism and democracy, the committee will submit a joint representation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ongoing parliamentary session as part of its action plan. Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao raised concerns over what he called the possibility of a &ldquo;disproportionate increase in number of seats&rdquo; in the Lok Sabha and assemblies of some populous northern states after delimitation. He cautioned that after a population-based delimitation, three-four states could end up determining the political roadmap for the whole country.
&ldquo;Those states that have had explosive population growth despite the government of India&rsquo;s prescription, today cannot be asked to run the country and decide the future course of action for the country. What we are proposing is a fair delimitation,&rdquo; KTR told NDTV after the meeting in Chennai got over. &ldquo;Southern states do not lose [seats] does not mean that northern states will not gain disproportionately. That&rsquo;s the concern, that the south may nominally see an increase in seats, but the north may get a disproportionate (number of seats),&rdquo; KTR told NDTV.

The opposition’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) on delimitation, headed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, adopted a resolution demanding transparency in the exercise and urged the Union Government to extend the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 Census for another 25 years. The meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) was held in Chennai on Saturday (Mar 22), where the panel adopted a resolution opposing any delimitation exercise that lacks transparency and fails to involve key stakeholders. The meeting was attended by representatives from multiple states concerned about the impact of the upcoming delimitation on their political and economic future. The JAC expressed concern that states that successfully implemented population control measures over the years might be unfairly penalised if their parliamentary representation is reduced due to a falling population share. The leaders said that the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 Census was meant to protect and incentivise states that took effective steps to stabilise population growth. Since the intended population goal has not yet been achieved, they called for extending the freeze by another 25 years. “The states that have effectively implemented the population control programme and consequently whose population share has come down should not be penalised,” the resolution read.
