Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified in the Parliament on Tuesday that there will be no Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the &lsquo;prasad&rsquo; served at religious places. There is total GST exemption on the food served as such, the FM said. Sitharaman was speaking in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on Finance Bill 2025.&nbsp;
There had been several misgivings about the GST on several religious activities. Earlier, the finance ministry clarified that there is no GST on religious places, including on rent paid for rooms in Sarais (accommodations) run by religious or charitable trusts.&nbsp; The government said that free food supplied in &lsquo;anna kshetras&rsquo; (food areas) run by religious institutions is exempt from GST. Besides, the &lsquo;prasadam&rsquo; distributed by places of worship like temples and gurdwaras would not attract any GST.

On a quest towards self-reliance, the Indian Army actively supports the private industry in defence manufacturing through several initiatives to foster collaboration, innovation, and capability development. For operational familiarisation, the Army organises trips for industry representatives to forward areas to acquaint them with field conditions and operational requirements. This helps private companies design systems tailored to real-world military needs. Among other initiatives, the Army also extends support for trials and R&amp;D of systems developed by private companies and provides in-service equipment for research and development purposes. In fact, going further for export facilitation, the Army assists private firms by issuing no-objection certificates for exporting indigenous products and promoting military diplomacy with friendly foreign countries. Moreover, dedicated cells have been set up at institutions like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, to link academia with industry, fostering innovative ideas for futuristic projects. The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), also organises seminars and discussions with industry representatives to help them understand the Army&rsquo;s long-term procurement plans and contribute effectively to modernisation efforts. Regular capsules are conducted at CLAWS to familiarise industry participants with the procedures and processes for defence procurement. The Indian Army also supports Indian industry by hand-holding defence manufacturers through development cycles&mdash;providing firing ranges, technical assistance during trials to validate internal milestones, and even showcasing their equipment to prospective foreign customers. One of the best examples of this collaborative model is the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), which has now received formal clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). In a major boost to self-reliance, the government has approved the acquisition of ATAGS worth nearly ₹7000 crore, marking a decisive step in indigenous artillery capability building. The ATAGS, India&rsquo;s first indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured 155mm artillery gun, has been under development by DRDO in collaboration with private industry partners Bharat Forge and TASL since 2009. The system boasts a long 52-calibre barrel capable of delivering precision strikes beyond 45 km using guided munitions. With a largely indigenous supply chain&mdash;over 65% of components sourced locally including critical systems like the barrel, breech, muzzle brake, firing mechanism, and recoil system&mdash;ATAGS is a major demonstration of India's defence industrial capability under the Make in India programme. At the time of development, the Indian Army&rsquo;s Artillery Directorate embedded a dedicated team at DRDO&rsquo;s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune. This included a Colonel-rank Programme Coordinator, two Project Managers of Lieutenant Colonel rank, and support staff to coordinate project execution and monitor progress closely. Now in the final stages of procurement, the order is expected to be split between the two Indian private companies, with Bharat Forge likely to receive 60% and TASL 40% of the initial production contract. The Ministry of Defence is expected to sign the contract before the end of March 2025. The approval not only boosts domestic defence production but also paves the way for employment generation&mdash;an estimated 20 lakh man-days across industries&mdash;and future exports. Being entirely indigenous, the system ensures lifecycle support and operational availability without foreign bottlenecks, thereby enhancing strategic readiness along India&rsquo;s Northern and Western borders. Beyond ATAGS, private Indian companies are playing a critical role in other artillery platforms as well. Bharat Forge, for instance, is a key contender in both the 155mm Mounted Gun System (MGS) and Towed Gun System (TGS) programmes. MGS field trials are scheduled for December 2025, with firms like Bharat Forge requesting delivery extensions until then. For the TGS, field evaluations are slated for July 2025, and vendors must submit systems accordingly. The Indian Army&rsquo;s consistent focus on upgrading to 155mm calibre systems is evident. Legacy 130mm field guns are being converted to 155mm under the Sharang programme. The Army is also inducting 114 Dhanush guns, with full operational availability expected by 2026. In parallel, the force is enhancing mobility and firepower with platforms like the M777 Ultra-Light Howitzer and the K9 Vajra self-propelled howitzer, for which an additional 100 units were ordered in December 2024. Meanwhile, the indigenous Pinaka rocket system continues to be upgraded for greater range and accuracy. The Army is also shifting focus toward smart ammunition and loitering munitions to increase precision and flexibility in future engagements. As articulated by Director General Artillery Lt Gen Adosh Kumar in September 2024, loitering munitions are a key area of future procurement. A man landed himself in legal trouble after he allegedly posted &ldquo;I love you Pakistan&rdquo; on social media, news agency PTI reported on Monday (Mar 24), citing a police official.
The man, identified as Tabrez Alam of Uttar Pradesh&rsquo;s Bareilly, is a resident of Shikarpur Chaudhary Gautia, according to Izzatnagar Station House Officer (SHO) Vijendra Singh.

New Delhi: In a groundbreaking move to bolster maritime security and deepen ties with African nations, the Indian Navy is set to conduct its first joint exercise with several countries along the continent&rsquo;s eastern coast, with an eye toward combating piracy and other illicit activities at sea. The exercise named &lsquo;Africa India Key Maritime Engagement&rsquo; or Aikeyme, which means unity in Sanskrit, will aim to increase cooperation in tackling maritime security threats such as piracy, illegal activities including trafficking, and unregulated and unreported fishing through sharing of information and surveillance. The Indian Navy aims to hold these exercises every 2 years.
The maiden edition of the exercise was co-hosted by the Indian Navy and the Tanzania Peoples&rsquo; Defence Force (TPDF) and would be conducted at/off Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate the joint exercise, which will see participation from Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, the Seychelles, and South Africa. While this time around East African countries are present, the plan is to broaden its scope to include West African countries in the next edition.

The ship will be deployed for over a month in April 2025 and will be undertaking port calls at Dar-es-Salaam, Nacala, Port Louis, Port Victoria, and Male. As part of the deployment, it will undertake Joint surveillance of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of Tanzania, Mozambique, Mauritius, and the Seychelles.

The Supreme Court Collegium, on Monday (Mar 23), following two meetings, recommended the repatriation of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma back to his parent Allahabad High Court.
The resolution of the Collegium stated, "In its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025, has recommended repatriation of Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad."
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association raised an objection over the decision stating that the high court lawyers will go on an indefinite strike from Tuesday in a show of protest against the move.
Last week, the AHCBA expressed strong dissent over any such decision emphasizing that the high court is not a &ldquo;trash bin&rdquo;.
It also passed resolutions that urge the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to permit investigating agencies to take action against Justice Varma. Furthermore, the AHCBA called for impeachment proceedings against Varma, highlighting concerns about judicial integrity. &nbsp;&nbsp;
"We condemn any move to transfer Justice Verma to Allahabad HC and demand his impeachment.....the CBI and ED should be allowed to register FIR against him in connection with the alleged recovery of cash from his house," Allahabad HC Bar Association president Anil Tewari said after the meeting in Prayagraj.

In the report, the Delhi High Court Chief Justice stated that he has a prima facie opinion that the matter demands a deeper investigation.
According to the report, a fire broke out in a storeroom at Justice Varma&rsquo;s official residence in Tughlak Crescent, New Delhi.
Following this, the firefighters discovered burnt currency notes at the site.
The apex court has ordered Varma to maintain all phone data and communications.&nbsp;
The SC has also requested records of security personnel assigned to Varma's residence for the preceding six months.
In a written explanation to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Varma said that the visuals showing a burnt cash pile are part of "a conspiracy to frame and malign" him.
The judge claimed that the incident adds weight to his "firm belief that the entire incident is part of a sequence of events which occurred in the recent past including the unfounded allegations that circulated on social media in December 2024".

With the spring on, the Tulip Garden, located below the Zabarwan Hills and overlooking the world-famous Dal Lake, is looking no less than a floral wonderland. The floriculture department is also planning a Tulip Festival in the month of April. And the gardeners are making sure that most of the tulips bloom before the opening of the garden.
&ldquo;The garden will be thrown open to the public on March 26, and this year the Tulip Show of 2025 will be a glamorous one with vibrant colours. We will have around 74 varieties of tulips this season. Apart from these, we have a very good collection of Daffodils, Hyacinths, and Muscaris. As far as the quantity of the tulips this year, we have 1.7 million bulbs this time, and the tourists will be able to see them bloom. We welcome everyone for the spring festival and be part of this,&rdquo; said Asif Ahmad Itoo, Floriculture Officer.

Hundreds of gardeners and staff are working day and night to prepare the garden for the opening. It takes around 6 months to get the garden ready, and extensive planning is done much earlier before the opening of the garden. And this year, the floriculture department says all the previous records of tourist footfall will be broken.
The Tulip Garden has become extremely famous among the people across India. A lot of travellers plan their visit to the valley during the tulip bloom. And this year, the floriculture department has also planted other varieties of flowers, like hyacinths, daffodils, muscaris, and cyclamens, to make the garden look more colourful.

We are expecting around 5.5 lakh visitors this year with an increase of one lakh tourists,&rdquo; said Shakeel Ur Rehman, Director, Floriculture.
The Tulip Garden was set up in 2008 during the regime of then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad. The garden was set up to draw more tourists to the valley during the spring season. "Since she had violated laws in Singapore, she negotiated with me to instead come to Chennai, our home town and settle down here. We signed an MOU - I'd pay her approx 9 Crores and 4.3 Lakhs/month," he alleged. They didn't follow the MoU guidelines diligently.&nbsp;

Chennai traffic police to use 'air-conditioned helmets' to beat the heat

BAPS Hindu Mandir - the first ever traditional Hindu temple in the Middle East (situated in Abu Dhabi) - hosted an iftar gathering during the Islamic holy month of Ramzan. The iftar - an event where people gather to break their fast of Ramzan - was hosted to promote interfaith culture.&nbsp;

It was attended by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, along with other distinguished leaders and ambassadors. As many as 200 religious leaders and diplomats along with community representatives were present during the event. The event was dedicated to highlighting values of faith, friendship, unity, and reflection during the fasting month while promoting global harmony. A former employee at the ICICI Bank in India's Mumbai has alleged that the organisation mentally harassed her and forced her to resign after she couldn't report to office due to mother's severe health condition.&nbsp;
The woman employee, in a complaint letter to All India Professionals' Congress, claimed she had joined the bank in April 2023 and had to resign in November 2024.&nbsp;
"Things in ICICI were not very smooth from the beginning, however the ship was still sailing," the woman wrote in the letter posted on the professional platform LinkedIn on Sunday (March 23).&nbsp;

The ex-ICICI employee claimed that her mother was admitted to hospital on August 13, 2024 after an emergency and the doctors told the family her body "had completely shut down" due to renal failure after wrong medication.&nbsp;
The employee claimed in the letter that she approached her manager to get "work from hospital" &nbsp;but all she received was utter rejection.&nbsp;

She said her manager told her over a call that "if you are choosing your mother over work, it's not our concern. You may ask your cousins, uncles, aunts to sit in the hospital and you will required to come down to work or else go on loss of PAY".&nbsp;
She claimed in the letter that she lost her father 4 years back and is the only child and bread winner of the family.&nbsp;
She said that the bank had stopped covering parents in its Mediclaim services for staff "unless a new insurance was brought from ICICI LOMBARD".&nbsp;
She said she had informed the manager that her mother already had a medical insurance and she did not need another for her.&nbsp;
"It cannot be always how you want. I cannot assist your further and I need you to come down to the office," her manager (names hidden for privacy purpose) told her.

Later, she got a call from her senior manager who said, "If your mother is still in the ICU and not recovering, it's best that you put her in a medical home and come down to office."&nbsp;
<h2>Further allegations&nbsp;</h2>
The employee claimed that she reported to her office after leaving her mother with an extra nurse in the hospital. She approached her manager with a resignation letter and found that her quitting was "pre-decided" by the management.&nbsp;
The letter of the ex-employee, a video of her alleging the bank of harassment, and her mother's medical reports - all of these were shared on LinkedIn by Mohit Pratap Singh, Professionals' Congress - Coordinator, Communications, as claimed on the platform.&nbsp;

WION reached out to the ICICI Bank for its comments on the allegations but received no response.&nbsp;
<h2>Not the first case&nbsp;</h2>
This is not the first time, an employee of ICICI has alleged harassment on the bank. Weeks ago, a senior employee of the bank allegedly died by suicide after claiming workplace harassment and extreme work pressure in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

Indian security forces are carrying out a massive operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Saniyal area of Hiranagar in Kathua district on the second consecutive day. The Indian Army had received input about the presence of four to five foreign terrorists in the area on Sunday evening. A cordon and search operation was launched by forces in the area during which the terrorists fired on security forces resulting in an encounter.&nbsp;
The operation continues as more forces have been brought in to search the whole area where these terrorists could be hiding. Indian Army had said, "Based on Intelligence Input regarding the presence of terrorists, a Joint Operation has been launched by @JmuKmrPolice &amp; troops of #RisingStar Corps on 23 Mar 25 in general area Saniyal #Hiranagar. Operations in Progress."&nbsp;
According to officials, one seven-year-old girl was injured in the crossfire between terrorists and security forces in the Hiranagar area. The girl was taken to the hospital where her condition is said to be stable.&nbsp;
Security forces also busted a major hideout in the Poonch area of Jammu division. A massive store of arms and ammunition was recovered by the Indian Army which included three AK rifles with 23 magazines, grenades, time bomb among other items.&nbsp;
