A high-level team from India’s Commerce and Industry Ministry has reached Washington to carry on the negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States, and the four-day discussions are to begin on Monday morning (US time). The visit assumes significance as both sides have to iron out issues in sectors like agriculture and automobiles, and the US has postponed the imposition of additional tariffs on several countries, including India, until August 1.&nbsp;On being asked if an interim trade deal can be expected before August 1, an official, seeking anonymity, said, “We are talking about a BTA. How it moves forward, whether there will be the first phase, second phase, whatever phase, will be mutually decided.”“We are moving in terms of a BTA and we are looking for a mutually beneficial solution,” the official added.&nbsp;Earlier, the Indian team was in Washington from June 26 to July 2 for negotiations.&nbsp;<h2>India adopts hard stance on US demand for duty concessions on agri, dairy products</h2>&nbsp;As per reports, India has hardened its position on the US demand for duty concessions on agriculture and dairy products. A high-level team from India’s Commerce and Industry Ministry has reached Washington to carry on the negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States, and the four-day discussions are to begin on Monday morning (US time). India’s chief negotiator, Rajesh Agrawal, who is special secretary in the Department of Commerce at Centre, will join the team on Wednesday, while the rest of the team is already on the ground to thrash out the preliminary agenda and procedural matters, said an ANI report. The visit assumes significance as both sides have to iron out issues in sectors like agriculture and automobiles, and the US has postponed the imposition of additional tariffs on several countries, including India, until August 1. On being asked if an interim trade deal can be expected before August 1, an official, seeking anonymity, said, “We are talking about a BTA. How it moves forward, whether there will be the first phase, second phase, whatever phase, will be mutually decided.” “We are moving in terms of a BTA and we are looking for a mutually beneficial solution,” the official added. Earlier, the Indian team was in Washington from June 26 to July 2 for negotiations. India adopts hard stance on US demand for duty concessions on agri, dairy products As per reports, India has hardened its position on the US demand for duty concessions on agriculture and dairy products. New Delhi has, so far, not given any duty concessions in the dairy sector to any of its trading partners in a free trade agreement. It is also seeking the easing of tariffs on steel and aluminium (50 per cent) and the auto (25 per cent) sectors. Against these, India has reserved its right under the WTO (World Trade Organization) norms to impose retaliatory duties. US President Donald Trump announced heavy tariffs on a number of countries, including India, on April 2, but postponed them first for 90 days until July 9 and then recently to August 1. The Trump administration has issued tariff letters to a number of its trading partners, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Serbia, and Tunisia. The US wants duty concessions on certain industrial goods, automobiles, wines, petrochemical products, and agri goods, like dairy items, apples, tree nuts, and genetically modified crops. India is seeking duty concessions for labour-intensive sectors like textiles, gems and jewellery, leather goods, garments, plastics, chemicals, shrimp, oil seeds, grapes, and bananas. The two countries are looking to conclude talks for the first tranche of the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by September-October this year but are looking for an interim trade pact before that. The ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar has already led to the elimination of more than 35 lakh names on the voter list for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. According to the data of the Election Commission of India (EC), at least 35.69 lakh voters will be deleted from the voter list after the contentious revision, which rankled the opposition parties and drew strong criticism from them. The 35.69 figure includes about 12.55 lakh (1.59%) registered voters who died, 17.37 lakh who permanently moved out of the state (2.2%), and another 5.76 lakh having duplicate enrollments (0.73%). The EC announced on Monday that the revision exercise has crossed 88.18 per cent of the total voting population in Bihar. At least 5 per cent invalid entries have been filtered out, which is 35.69 lakh voters, it said.&nbsp;The ECI said 6.60 crore (83.66%) out of the total 7.90 crore registered voters have already submitted their enumeration forms, and only 11.82% of electors still have to submit their Enumeration Forms, and many of them have sought time to submit them with documents in the coming days.&nbsp;The remaining close to 5 per cent include deceased, shifted, or duplicate voters, the EC said.&nbsp;The EC said that 1.59 per cent of the electors were found to be deceased and 2.2 per cent have permanently moved out of the state. Another 0.73 per cent voters were found to be enrolled at more than one place, which amounts to duplicate enrollment.It said out of the three, two rounds of door-to-door visits by the booth-level officers (BLO) have been completed to date.“Nearly one lakh BLOs will soon begin their third round of door-to-door visits. Their efforts are being augmented by the 1.5 lakh BLAs (booth-level agents) appointed by all political parties, each one of whom can certify and submit up to 50 EFs per day,” it added.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>‘Ensuring no voter is left out’</h2>&nbsp;To ensure that no eligible urban voter is left out, special camps are being set up in all 5,683 wards of all 261 urban local bodies (ULB) of Bihar.Besides, voters who have temporarily migrated from the state are being informed through newspaper advertisements and direct contact so that they can fill their forms in time and get their names included in the draft list to be published on August 1.&nbsp;“Such electors can easily fill out EFs online using their mobile phones through the ECINet App or through the online form on https://voters.eci.gov.in. They can also send their forms to the concerned BLOs through their family members or through any online means, including WhatsApp or similar applications,” the EC said, citing the June 24 order.The EC also revealed that during field visits, some foreign nationals from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar were found registered as voters and these names will be removed after further verification.

Omar also said that what is very unfortunate is that a book about trekking is being released at a time when most of these routes and treks are closed.&nbsp;“What is unfortunate is that this book is being released at a time when not even a single trekking route is open. In the last two or three months, a lot of Kashmir tourist places have been closed, and looking at this book is making me very sad. We are hopeful that these routes will open soon. Although this decision is not in our hands. If not for the tourists, they can open them for the locals. The movement of locals over these places will build confidence in the people,” the CM said.&nbsp;The coffee table book “Valleys of Jammu and Kashmir” has been written by senior bureaucrat and trekking enthusiast Mehmood Ahmad Shah. He serves the Jammu and Kashmir Government as the Managing Director of KPDCL. According to Shah, the book took over 20 years to be finally published. The book has over 114 photographs taken over the last two decades and detailed documentation of 54 high altitude lakes.&nbsp;Speaking at the event, Shah also thanked Garry Weare, a prominent Australian author and Himalayan expert for writing the foreword of the book. Shah said he had been constantly taking advice from Garry before the publishing of the book.&nbsp;The book will be helpful to the trekkers and will guide them to take up adventurous journeys and routes in the higher reaches of the valley which have hardly been explored. The book gives exact coordinates of the places and lakes on the higher reaches making it very easy for the trekkers to take these journeys.

After a Rath Yatra procession in Canada's Toronto was disrupted after unknown individuals hurled eggs at devotees, India denounced the act and said the matter has strongly been taken up with the Canadian authorities to make the perpetrators accountable. The incident has sparked allegations of racism and xenophobia.&nbsp;External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called the incident "regrettable".&nbsp;Speaking to the media on Monday (July 14) Jaiswal said, "Such despicable acts are regrettable and are against the spirit of the festival, which seeks to promote unity, inclusivity, and social harmony."&nbsp;"We have strongly taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the perpetrators of the act accountable," he further said adding, "We hope the Canadian Government will take necessary action to protect the religious rights of people."&nbsp;Earlier today former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed deep concern over the incident.&nbsp;“Deeply disturbed to know about the reports of eggs being hurled at devotees during Ratha Jatra celebrations in Toronto, Canada. After a Rath Yatra procession in Canada's Toronto was disrupted after unknown individuals hurled eggs at devotees, India denounced the act and said the matter has strongly been taken up with the Canadian authorities to make the perpetrators accountable. The incident has sparked allegations of racism and xenophobia. External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called the incident "regrettable". Speaking to the media on Monday (July 14) Jaiswal said, "Such despicable acts are regrettable and are against the spirit of the festival, which seeks to promote unity, inclusivity, and social harmony." "We have strongly taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the perpetrators of the act accountable," he further said adding, "We hope the Canadian Government will take necessary action to protect the religious rights of people." Earlier today former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed deep concern over the incident. “Deeply disturbed to know about the reports of eggs being hurled at devotees during Ratha Jatra celebrations in Toronto, Canada. Such incidents not only grievously hurt the sentiments of Lord Jagannatha’s devotees worldwide, but also cause deep anguish to the people of Odisha, for whom this festival holds profound emotional and cultural significance," he said on X. The video of the incident was posted on Instagram by sangnabajaj with caption, "Someone from a nearby building threw eggs at us…Why? Because faith makes noise? The killing of tennis player Radhika Yadav in Gurugram, Haryana, has left the sporting world stunned. Radhika Yadav, 25, a national-level player and tennis coach, was shot dead by her father after a fight over her tennis academy. Radhika's father Deepak Yadav was sent to police custody for a day by a Gurugram court on Friday (July 11). He has confessed to the crime. Eyeing better earning opportunities, she quit her job and started her own clinic.&nbsp;Nimisha's India-based lawyer Subhash Chandan maintains that Priya and another woman had started a clinic with Yemeni national Talal, who had later subjected the women to physical and mental abuse, confiscated their passports. In a desperate bid to escape the abuse and flee, it is said that Priya and the Yemeni woman had drugged Talal, which is suspected to have led to his death. The case got further complicated after Talal's mutilated body was found by the authorities in Yemen. Nimisha's lawyer maintains that she was only responsible for drugging the abuser and that she isn't aware of what transpired after her escape bid.<h2>When Nimisha's mother met her in Yemeni jail</h2>After a seven-year-long wait and multiple court battles in India, Premakumari, Nimisha's mother was able to meet her daughter in a Yemeni prison, in April 2024. Back then, jail authorities had permitted the mother-daughter duo to spend a few hours together and even allowed them to have lunch in the premises. Since 2017, India strictly prohibited its nationals from travelling to Yemen, owing to the deteriorating internal security situation there. The case got further complicated after Talal's mutilated body was found by the authorities in Yemen. When Nimisha's mother met her in Yemeni jail After a seven-year-long wait and multiple court battles in India, Premakumari, Nimisha's mother was able to meet her daughter in a Yemeni prison, in April 2024. Back then, jail authorities had permitted the mother-daughter duo to spend a few hours together and even allowed them to have lunch in the premises. Since 2017, India strictly prohibited its nationals from travelling to Yemen, owing to the deteriorating internal security situation there. The government calls it a historic step to deliver Justice to the terror victim families and the administration will now reach the doorsteps of all the families who have been waiting for justice for decades.&nbsp;According to official data, around 1,200 families of terror victims have contacted the district authorities seeking justice and rehabilitation. These families came forward only after the Lieutenant Governor had met a few families in Anantnag on 29th June 2025 and they were assured of jobs within 30 days.&nbsp;The Lieutenant Governor fulfilled his promise within 15 days and handed-over appointment letters to the 40 families of terror victims in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. According to the government of Jammu and Kashmir, the process will continue till every terror victim's family is rehabilitated.&nbsp;''I am committed to ensure that these families receive the justice, jobs, recognition and support they deserve after years of suffering.
