A second-year MBA student at Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has been arrested on the allegation of raping a woman inside the boys’ hostel of the institute. However, in a shocking turn of events, the woman’s father on Saturday (Jul 12) denied that she was sexually assaulted. Instead, he claimed that she had fallen out of an auto rickshaw. According to the accused’s lawyer, the woman was a counsellor and had connected with the student online. She had gone to the hostel on the campus of the business school to provide a counselling session. The accused will remain in police custody till July 19. His lawyer has alleged that he is being framed.&nbsp;According to the police, the woman alleged that he had made her consume a drink laced with drugs, after which she lost consciousness and learned that she had been raped upon waking up, news agency PTI reported. However, her father has now alleged that his daughter was not raped and had an accident.&nbsp;Speaking to reporters, the father said, “No such incident happened with my daughter. I received a call around 9:34 PM, but my daughter did not disclose her location at that time. Over the call, she said that she fell from a car and that she was unconscious.” He added, “I later on tracked her location, and it was found that she was at SSKM Hospital. The Haridevpur police rescued her after reaching the hospital.”&nbsp;He further said that his daughter told him no sexual assault had occurred. “The police told me they have registered a case and arrested someone. My daughter said the police told her to say something during the medical exam, and she did not,” he said.&nbsp;He further said, “I have spoken to my daughter. She said no one tortured her or misbehaved with her. I have got back my daughter, she is normal. She has no connection with the man who has been arrested... I have not been able to speak to her at length. She is sleeping. I will talk to her after she wakes up... She had gone to submit a document.”&nbsp;<h2>IIM Calcutta issues statement</h2>&nbsp;In a statement, the Director-in-Charge of IIM Calcutta, Saibal Chattopadhyay, said, “The administration of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has been made aware of a serious complaint involving one of our students and the Complainant is not of the Institute. We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and are fully cooperating with the law enforcement authorities, who are currently conducting an investigation... The Institute is committed to ensuring that due process is followed while safeguarding the dignity, safety, and privacy of all individuals involved.”&nbsp;The statement added, “We wish to affirm that the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has zero tolerance for such incidents and remains steadfast in upholding a safe and respectful campus environment. We are also taking all necessary steps to support the process of ongoing investigation and ensure that institutional protocols are adhered to.”

Further it mentions, the throttle control module was replaced on the crashed VT-ANB (crashed AI-171) in 2019 and 2023.&nbsp;However, the replacement of throttle control module was not linked to the fuel control switch, the report says. There has been no defect reported pertaining to the fuel control switch since 2023 on VT-ANB(crashed AI-171), the preliminary report mentions.&nbsp;"Takeoff is a very critical maneuver and it is done not via autopilot, but physically by one of the pilots. One pilot is fully focused on pulling the yoke so that the aircraft lifts off at three degrees per second to achieve 15 degrees in five seconds. The other pilot is busy monitoring the aircraft pitch angle, airspeed, the rate of climb, and the altitude. These are all very critical and focused jobs. After assessing the AAIB's preliminary report, many aviation experts gave a clean chit of sorts to the pilots of the Air India plane that crashed last month, claiming they had acted within aviation norms. These experts blamed a technical fault in the plane for the crash that killed 241 passengers and crew, and 19 people on the ground. The agency today said in its report, citing the pilots' conversation in the cockpit, that the fuel switch had turned off, and both of them declined to have done that. The pilots attempted to restart the engines but failed, which, experts said, pointed to a grave issue with the engines themselves.&nbsp;"From the report I have seen, there was no other reason for the aircraft to go down but the manufacturing part...It appears that the fuel was cut off on takeoff. The voice recorder makes it clear that neither the commander nor the co-pilot switched off the jet fuel switch. This is obviously some fault within the aircraft that the jet fuel switch turned off automatically," said aviation expert Sanat Kaul.&nbsp;Ehsan Khalid, another aviation expert, explained how the fuel cut-off switch works.&nbsp;"The fuel cut-off switch is a physical switch; it has to be moved from one position to another, and it has to be moved from that position back. There is no automation involved in it. What automation is involved is the fuel shut-off valve. It has transitioned from run to cut-off or ON to OFF, if that is what was being recorded, and if AAIB meant then it is a different thing, but fuel switches being moved up and down automatically does not happen. So, the AAIB report has made some of the answers right, some of the speculations are out of the window," he said.&nbsp;Khalid backed the deceased pilots, saying they were right in trying to switch on the cut-off switch.&nbsp;"Pilot action was 100 per cent right, they tried to revive the engine, which is further corroborated by the fact that there was some movement of the fuel cut-off switch. The fact remains that the engine power was lost without pilot input is confirmed," he said.&nbsp;He said the fuel control shut-off valve might have shut off.&nbsp;"The aircraft took off without any problem, till 3 seconds after it lifted off, at 39 seconds, it left the ground, at 42 seconds, both engines lost power. The report says fuel cut-off switches, transitioned from run to cut-off in 1 1-second interval; thereafter engine continued to be in that position till the next 10 seconds, thereafter the switches transitioned from cut-off to run position. There is no aircraft mechanism that moves the control switches. What has moved is the fuel control shut-off valve...In my opinion, there is no way the switch can move on its own...The pilots did not do it," he added.&nbsp;Veteran pilot and aviation expert Amit Singh said the switch cannot turn off on its own.&nbsp;"They have ruled out every other thing, it is certain that both engines had shut down, they may have shut down because of the fuel control switches being selected off, how did they go off, because of technical defect, or human intervention, the design is such that it cannot automatically go on and off...Time will tell why it happened, there could be the contributory causes...Multiple effects can result in accidents; it has to be a very detailed investigation," he added.&nbsp;Flight data recovered from the aircraft's Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR) revealed that the fuel cutoff switches for both engines were inadvertently moved from RUN to CUTOFF, one after the other within a 1-second interval. So, the AAIB report has made some of the answers right, some of the speculations are out of the window," he said. Khalid backed the deceased pilots, saying they were right in trying to switch on the cut-off switch. "Pilot action was 100 per cent right, they tried to revive the engine, which is further corroborated by the fact that there was some movement of the fuel cut-off switch. The fact remains that the engine power was lost without pilot input is confirmed," he said. He said the fuel control shut-off valve might have shut off. "The aircraft took off without any problem, till 3 seconds after it lifted off, at 39 seconds, it left the ground, at 42 seconds, both engines lost power. The report says fuel cut-off switches, transitioned from run to cut-off in 1 1-second interval; thereafter engine continued to be in that position till the next 10 seconds, thereafter the switches transitioned from cut-off to run position. The woman realised she had been raped after regaining consciousness," the police officer said.&nbsp;The victim said the accused later threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.&nbsp;"The accused student was detained last night before being formally arrested," he added.&nbsp;The incident comes two weeks after a law student was gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College campus in Kolkata.&nbsp;The incident took place on June 25, when a student was allegedly gangraped inside the South Calcutta Law College in the Kasba area of Kolkata.&nbsp;Five days later, on June 30, Kolkata Police said that the three main accused in the case were arrested in less than 12 hours.&nbsp;On July 9, the Alipore court sent all four accused in the South Kolkata Law College gangrape case to 14 days of judicial custody.

The other pilot responded that he did not do so," it added. India on Friday successfully tested the indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air missile (BVRAAM) ‘Astra’ equipped with an indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) Seeker from the Su-30 Mk-I platform off the coast of Odisha. Two launches were carried out against high-speed unmanned aerial targets at different ranges, target aspects, and launch platform conditions, and in both instances, the missiles destroyed the targets with pinpoint accuracy.&nbsp;With a range of more than 100 km, Astra will be the preferred weapon for existing platforms like the Su-30MKI as well as future indigenous combat jets. The Defence Research and Development Organisation and IAF successfully conducted the flight tests of Astra fitted with the DRDO-made RF seeker to zero in on the targets from Su-30 Mk-I.&nbsp;All the subsystems performed as per expectations, and the missile’s performance was validated through flight data captured by range tracking instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur.&nbsp;Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the successful testing of the missile with an indigenous seeker was a major milestone in critical defence technology.&nbsp;

DRDO scientists have been working on an upgraded version of the missile with an extended range of 140 km. The trials for Astra-2 were likely to be completed by 2026, sources said.&nbsp;Astra’s homegrown seeker means India controls the core technology, which shields supply chains from sudden export bans or price spikes.
