Woman beaten to death by husband, in-laws over dowry demand of SUV, cash

A woman in Greater Noida area of Uttar Pradesh state in north India was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws because her family could not meet their growing dowry demands. Her in-laws had demanded a Toyota Fortuner and ₹ 21,00,000 cash, according to police.
After the incident, the accused husband Vikas Bhati alias Bittu, and his father Sompal Bhati were arrested by the local police from a service road in the Ecotech 3 area on March 31.
In December 2022, Karishma, the victim, had got married to Vikas. The couple resided in Kheda Chauganpur in the Ecotech 3. According to Karishma's brother Deepak's police complaint, Karishma's in-laws were urging her to get more dowry and a Toyota Fortuner.
The complaint alleged that Karishma called her family on Friday (March 29) and informed them that her husband Vikas,his parents and siblings had beaten her. When her family reached the house to check on her, they found her dead.

According to Deepak, her family gave gold worth ₹ 11 lakh as well as an SUV to the groom's family at the time of the wedding. But over the years, Vikas' family mistreated her both physically and emotionally and persisted in demanding more dowry, according to Deepak.

After Karishma gave birth to a girl, the abuse worsened, and the two families attempted to resolve their problems at many panchayat sessions in Vikas' village, he said. Deepak said that even after Karishma's family gave his family an additional ₹10 lakh, the harassment continued.
“On March 29, we received information that the accused had demanded additional dowry from the complainant’s sister and when the demand was not met, Karishma was tortured and beaten to death,” a police spokesperson said.
An FIR has been filed under the Dowry Prohibition Act, IPC sections 498A (cruelty inflicted on married woman), 304B (dowry death), and 323 (voluntarily causing harm) against Karishma's husband and other suspects.
The accused were produced in a court which has remanded them in judicial custody, the police said, adding, that efforts are underway to nab other accused in the case.
