As a wave of outrage sweeps across India over the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor, another gut-wrenching incident from the state of Rajasthan has highlighted the pain and atrocities that women in India have to face every day. A video has emerged from the Nagaur district showing a manshamelessly tying his wife behind his bike and dragging her for several seconds on rocky ground.

The incident allegedly took place last month, and a video of the same has now gone viral.

As per reports, the man has been identified as 32-year-old Prem Ram Meghwal, who is unemployed as well as a drug addict. NDTV reported the man had ‘bought’ his wife around 10 months back for INR 200,000 (around $2,400).

Media reports suggest that the man punished his wife because she wanted to visit her sister in Jaisalmer district.

Police officers said they were investigating two angles in the case: one related to the wife being bought from another district, and the second related to human trafficking.

Nagaur's Superintendent of Police, Narayan Singh Togas, was quoted as saying by media reports, “The incident involves a woman who insisted on visiting her sister in Jaisalmer against her husband's wishes. Despite her husband's refusal, she persisted and intended to go with her sister. In response, the husband tied her to the back of his motorcycle and dragged her, an act that was captured in the viral video."

Another blood-boiling aspect of the video is that no one, including those who were filming, bothered to intervene and help the poor lady escape the torture.

Police have reportedly detained the man and have contacted the victim, who was now in Jaisalmer. Officials said they would also prosecute the onlookers for not intervening.
