Summer deadline: US government plans to stop work visa for spouses of H-1B visa holders

The US government is actively planning to terminate provision allowing spouses of H1-B visa holders to take up jobs in the country, newswire PTI quoted Trump administration officials as saying.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services(USCIS) chief Francis Cissna in a letter to Senator Chuck Grassley has reportedly said the US government plans to end the H-4 visa provision which is handed out to the spouse of an H-1B visa holderby this summer.

"Our plans include proposing regulatory changes to remove H-4 dependent spouses from the class of aliens eligible for employment authorisation, thereby reversing the 2015 final rule that granted such eligibility," Cissna said in the letter to Senator Chuck Grassley.

According to a study, over 93 per cent of H-4 visa holders were Indians and a staggering 94 per cent were women.

The Obama administration in 2015 had allowed work permits for spouses under the H-4 visa rule who were seeking permanent residency in the US, the Trump government is planning to overturn it and issue new guidelines.
