
In a big win for the INDIA alliance ahead of the Delhi Lok Sabha election voting, India's Supreme Court on Friday (May 10) granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till June 1.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was arrested and jailed in connection with the liquor excise policy case.
"We are passing an interim order...giving him interim bail till June 1," the apex court reportedly said giving relief to the Delhi CM who has been running the capital from behind bars since March 21.
In its order, SC further asked Kejriwal to surrender and go back to jail on June 2.
This key development comes as a huge respite for the AAP as Delhi High Court last month refused to give bail to the Delhi chief minister.
The court also approved Kejriwal's campaign for the elections after his release from jail.

"Let us not draw any parallel. He was arrested in March and the arrest could have been before or after. Now, after 21 days, there won't be any difference. On June 2, Arvind Kejriwal will surrender," the court ruled.

After the Supreme Court's interim bail ruling, Kejriwal's attorney will proceed to the trial court to prepare and dispatch the release order to the Tihar Jail administration, media reports said citing sources.
Kejriwal will be released by the jail administration only upon receipt of the trial court's release order, they added.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the ED, told the court that Kejriwal should refrain from disclosing any information pertaining to the case and must surrender on the given date.
To rejoice and celebrate the release of the leader, who had been lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail since March 21, AAP party workers raised slogans outside the party office.
On the Supreme Court granting interim bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, AAP leader Gopal Rai said, "...Today the Supreme Court has given a ray of hope to all those who believe in the Constitution. Our party, people of Delhi thank the Supreme Court..."
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-ledShiv Sena leader Sanjay Nipuram said, "Instead of jail or bail, first he should be removed from the CM post. How can an accused run the government from jail?"
