Son-in-law after son's 2019 loss? Robert Vadra reacts to 'chances' of contesting Lok Sabha polls from Amethi

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Robert Vadra

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Weeks afterthe Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress party unanimously passed a resolution for a candidature from the Gandhi family in Amethi and Raebareli seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's husband Robert Vadra reacted tothe possibility of stepping into theelectoral race.

Vadra's mother-in-law Sonia Gandhi has already announced that she will not contest from Raebareli, a Lok Sabha constituency she represented in Indian parliament since 2004. His brother-in-law Rahul Gandhi, too, has filed his candidature from southern India's Wayanad and appears to have given a miss to Amethi, a constituency he represented since 2004 but lost in 2019 to the BJP's Smriti Irani. The saffron partyhas fielded Irani again from Amethi but the Congress is yet to announce its candidate from its former bastion.

On Thursday (April 4), Vadra, an entrepreneur by profession told news agency ANI: "The people of Amethi expect me to represent their constituency if I decide to become a member of Parliament...For years, the Gandhi family worked hard in Raebareli, Amethi and Sultanpur...The people of Amethi are really troubled by the current Member of Parliament, they think they have made a mistake by electing her..."

Son-in-law to the longest-servingCongress president Sonia Gandhi, Robert Vadra is a fifth generation member of India's politically influential Gandhi-Nehru family. As a matter of crucial photographic symbolism, often he is seen accompanying his wife Priyanka in and out of the political meetings but doesn't have a formal role in the Congress party.

"I want Priyanka (Gandhi) to become an MP first and then I feel I can also come...I interact with people and there are MPs from different parties. They (MPs) ask me to come along with their party and ask me the reasons for the delay. They also assure me of their support...So different parties across the country are asking me to come along...I have friendships with a lot of people above the party lines...," Vadra added.

BJP slams Robert Vadra

Shortly after Vadra made the comment,BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, "Whatever he said, one thing is very clear that they (Congress) cannot come out of dynastic politics. What he (Robert Vadra) is apart from being the son-in-law of the Gandhi family, that people will expect something from him. What kind of certificate do you (Robert Vadra) have? Four power centres have been built here, one is of Sonia Gandhi, one of Rahul Gandhi, one is of Priyanka Gandhi, and one is of (Mallikarjun) Kharge. These people have ruined this country because of nepotism and still they do not want to change themselves..."
