
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who on Wednesday (Apr 3) filed his nomination for the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala's Wayanad, declared assets worth Rs 20 crore ($2.39 million), the news agency IANS reported citinghis affidavit. Gandhi revealed that he has $659 cash in hand and around $31,159 in bank deposits, the affidavit showed.
Gandhi has $1.1 million in moveable assets and owns immovable property to the tune of $1.33 million, including commercial buildings and land.
The Congress leader further disclosed in the affidavit that he earned an income of $122,240 for the financial year 2022-23 and it came through his salary as Wayanad's Lok Sabha MP, bank interest, dividends, bonds and royalties earned.
In Wayanad, Gandhi will be facing competition from Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Annie Raja and Kerala Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President K Surendran. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi secured a landslide victory in Wayanad with over 700,000 votes.
Kerala will witness polling in a single phase on April 26 for all the 20 constituencies.
Gandhi expressed joy after filing his nomination from Wayanad. In a post on X, he said on Wednesday, "Wayanad is my home, and the people of Wayanad are my family. From them, I have learned a great deal over the last five years and received an abundance of love and affection. It is with great pride and humility that I file my nomination for Lok Sabha 2024 once again from this beautiful land."
"This election is a fight for the soul of India; it is a fight to preserve our democracy from the forces of hatred, corruption, and injustice that seek to suppress the voice of Bharat Mata. I, along with every member of INDIA, will not rest until this battle is won," Gandhi added.
